Multifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene-Based Composite Coatings with Superhydrophobic Anti-icing and Photothermal Deicing Properties

Yushun Zhao,Cheng Yan,Tianqi Hou,Hongli Dou,Hao Shen

Although advances in industrial products have brought convenience to our lives, severe weather has increased the safety risks to industrial facilities. Considerable efforts have been made to develop high-performance superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings. Nevertheless, designing a functional coating with both anti-icing properties and self-deicing remains a major challenge. Here, we propose a design strategy to exploit a photothermal superhydrophobic multifunctional coating with excellent anti-icing and deicing properties based on MXene by high-temperature sintering and layer-by-layer coating. Specifically, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) particles provide low surface energy and binding effects. Room-temperature-vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) enhances the dispersion of the composite particles and the adhesion of the functional coating to a glass substrate. Furthermore, the functional coatings constructed with MXene exhibit outstanding photothermal effects, imparting excellent superhydrophobicity (CA = 160.18°, SA = 1.8°) and efficient photothermal conversion (equilibrium temperature of 109.3 °C). An anti-icing/deicing test is simulated to confirm their efficient anti-icing/deicing performance in practical applications. Overall, the functional coatings designed in this work can be applied in real industrial facilities.

Robust and Superhydrophobic Polydimethylsiloxane/Ni@Ti3C2Tx Nanocomposite Coatings with Assembled Eyelash-Like Microstructure Array: A New Approach for Effective Passive Anti-Icing and Active Photothermal Deicing

Junlin Chen,Xiang Chen,Zhifeng Hao,Zhuorui Wu,Mohamed S. Selim,Jian Yu,Yingming Huang

To solve the problem of ice condensation and adhesion, it is urgent to develop new anti-icing and deicing technologies. This study presented the development of a highly efficient photothermal-enhanced superhydrophobic PDMS/Ni@Ti3C2Tx composite film (m-NMPA) fabricated cost-effectively and straightforwardly. This film was fabricated utilizing PDMS as a hydrophobic agent, adhesive, and surface protector, while Ni@Ti3C2Tx as a magnetic photothermal filler innovatively. Through a simple spraying method, the filler is guided by a strong magnetic field to self-assemble into an eyelash-like microstructure array. The unique structure not only imparts superhydrophobic properties to the surface but also constructs an efficient “light-capturing” architecture. Remarkably, the m-NMPA film demonstrates outstanding superhydrophobic passive anti-icing and efficient photothermal active deicing performance without the use of fluorinated chemicals. The micro-/nanostructure of the film forms a gas layer, significantly delaying the freezing time of water. Particularly under extreme cold conditions (−30 °C), the freezing time is extended by a factor of 7.3 compared to the bare substrate. Furthermore, under sunlight exposure, surface droplets do not freeze. The excellent photothermal performance is attributed to the firm anchoring of nickel particles on the MXene surface, facilitating effective “point-to-face” photothermal synergy. The eyelash-like microarray structure enhances light-capturing capability, resulting in a high light absorption rate of 98%. Furthermore, the microstructure aids in maintaining heat at the uppermost layer of the surface, maximizing the utilization of thermal energy for ice melting and frost thawing. Under solar irradiation, the m-NMPA film can rapidly melt approximately a 4 mm thick ice layer within 558 s and expel the melted water promptly, reducing the risk of secondary icing. Additionally, the ice adhesion force on the surface of the m-NMPA film is remarkably low, with an adhesion strength of approximately 4.7 kPa for a 1 × 1 cm2 ice column. After undergoing rigorous durability tests, including xenon lamp weathering test, pressure resistance test, repeated adhesive tape testing, xenon lamp irradiation, water drop impact testing, and repeated brushing with hydrochloric acid and particles, the film’s surface structure and superhydrophobic performance have remained exceptional. The photothermal superhydrophobic passive anti-icing and active deicing technology in this work rely on sustainable solar energy for efficient heat generation. It presents broad prospects for practical applications with advantages such as simple processing method, environmental friendliness, outstanding anti-icing effects, and exceptional durability.

Design and performance study of superhydrophobic low-adhesion anti-icing coating with photothermal response

Tianqi Wang,Hongrui Yao,Na Wang,Yangsong Wang,Fei Wang

Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted significant attention for their potential in anti-icing applications. However, their practical application is often hampered by inherent limitations, such as mechanical durability and insufficient de-icing performance. In this study, a functional filler (ODA/MnO 2 @PDA-SiO 2 , OMPS) is synthesized by simple grafting and redox reaction, and a robust superhydrophobic low-adhesion anti-icing coating (OMPS-PDMS/E51) is prepared through spraying. The OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating surface shows a uniformly distributed concave-convex structure with a roughness value of 33.209 μm. This fine micro-nano structure makes the water contact angle of the coating surface as high as 157.1° and the rolling angle as low as 4.6°, indicating that the coating has excellent superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the coating surface is in a low water adhesion Cassie-Baxter state, so it has good antifouling and self-cleaning properties. Additionally, Cassie-Baxter wetting mode can minimize the contact between the coating and water, thereby inhibiting the formation and anchoring of ice core, so the freezing delay time of the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating is up to 358 seconds and the ice adhesion strength is as low as 26.3 KPa. Notably, the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating also exhibits the characteristics of active de-icing, which can rapidly heat up the coating surface through photothermal conversion, such as its surface temperature can reach 82.9 °C after infrared irradiation for 400 seconds, and the ice formed at -20 °C on the coating can melt within 144 seconds. These properties highlight the OMPS-PDMS/E51 coating’s potential for long-term anti-icing and de-icing applications in harsh environments.

The alignment of CNTs perpendicular to electric filed resulted in effective electrothermal de/anti-icing performance at high voltage for CNT/XLPE composites

Xiaoli Wu,Yunyi Li,Ting Yin,Yijun Liao,Site Mo,Wanxia Huang

The aligned CNT-based composite in transverse direction to the alignment is considered as completely insulating and unsuitable for utilization in de-icing system. Here, we have found that the aligned CNT-based composite in transverse direction to the alignment exhibited excellent electrothermal performance at high voltage, for the first time. Furthermore, we compared and investigated the electrical and electrothermal performance of the aligned and random non-percolative CNT/crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) composites at high voltage. A temperature increase of 7.5–72.7 ℃ at a record high voltage of 900–3100 V is reached for the aligned CNT/XLPE composites. The filed emission at high voltage enables the electron to transfer along the CNTs radial direction , resulting in joule heating for the aligned CNT/XLPE composites in transverse direction to the alignment. Besides, the non-percolative structure contributes a temperature increase of 8.2–40.1 ℃ at a applied voltage of 900–2800 V to random CNT/XLPE composites. The high applied voltages is significantly higher than rGO-based composites. More importantly, effective de-icing and anti-icing performance at high voltage of 900–2800 V are achieved for the random non-percolative and aligned CNT-based composites at −20 ℃. These results demonstrate the potential of applying the CNT/XLPE composites in de/anti-icing system of transmission-lines and other fields requiring joule heating at high voltage.

A Highly Transparent Photo-Electro-Thermal Film with Broadband Selectivity for All-Day Anti-/De-Icing

Chongjia Lin,Wei Ma,Yinglun Zhang,Man-Kwan LAW,Cruz Y. Li,Yang Li,Zengshun Chen,Keqiao Li,Meng Li,Jiongzhi Zheng,Yunfei Fu,Xiao Yan,Cheng Chi,Jinglei Yang,Weihong Li,Shuhuai Yao,Baoling Huang

A photo- and electro-thermal film can convert sunlight and electricity into heat to solve icing problems. Combination of them provides an efficient strategy for all-day anti-/de-icing. However, only opaque surfaces have been reported, due to the mutual exclusiveness between photon absorption and transmission. Herein, a highly transparent and scalable solution-processed photo-electro-thermal film is reported, which exhibits an ultra-broadband selective spectrum to separate the visible light from sunlight and a countertrend suppress of emission in longer wavelength. It absorbs ≈ 85% of invisible sunlight (ultraviolet and near-infrared) for light-heat conversion, meanwhile maintains luminous transmittance > 70%. The reflection of mid-infrared leads to low emissivity (0.41), which further preserves heat on the surface for anti-/de-icing purpose. This ultra-broadband selectivity enables temperature elevation > 40 °C under 1-sun illumination and the mutual support between photo-thermal and electro-thermal effects contributes to > 50% saving of electrical consumption under weak solar exposure (0.4-sun) for maintaining unfrozen surfaces at −35 °C environment. The reverberation from photo-electro-thermal and super-hydrophobic effects illustrates a lubricating removal of grown ice in short time (< 120 s). The self-cleaning ability and the durability under mechanical, electrical, optical, and thermal stresses render the film stable for long-term usage in all-day anti-/de-icing applications.

Pan Zhang,Changmei Wu,Lan Xie,Bai Xue,Yi Jiang

Considering the current challenges associated with fossil fuel scarcity and ice accumulation on solid surfaces, we propose a sustainable strategy that utilizes solar energy for ice formation, using a superhydrophobic coating possessing photothermal capabilities to tackle the challenges of icing and de-icing. We have successfully integrated the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @FAS/Ag-rGO composites into an epoxy matrix to create a photothermal superhydrophobic coating. The innovative coating boasts outstanding super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.8°, resulting in a 60 μL water droplet experiencing a freezing delay of 1498 s at −20 °C ambient conditions, which is longer than that of pure EP coating. Additionally, the coating exhibits an impressive photothermal effect, raising the surface temperature to 58.8 °C under 1 sun. The coating also demonstrates rapid de-icing capabilities, clearing ice in just 120 s under 40 mW/cm 2 . By leveraging the light-trapping effect, utilizing the plasma resonance of silver, and incorporating a high surface roughness micro-nano hierarchical structure, the coating achieves exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency and anti-icing performance. Moreover, the coating's chemical and mechanical durability enhance its practicality and potential utility across various applications. In conclusion, this innovative superhydrophobic coating with photothermal properties offers a promising solution for various practical applications such as anti-icing and de-icing.

Controllable Structure Design of an Organic Gel-Infused Porous Surface for Efficient Anti- and De-icing

Weiming Lin,Haonan Song,Huimin Qi,Xingshi Gu,Ding Zhang,Jiaxin Yu,Yafeng Zhang,Gai Zhao

Icing causes many problems in daily life and with equipment stability, and many efforts have been made to remove surface icing. Herein, a novel organic gel-infused porous material is developed to achieve excellent de-icing performance. Porous polydimethylsiloxane (P-PDMS) composites with different pore sizes were prepared by a template method. The two-phase skeletons and/or gel material was obtained by infusing PDMS gel into P-PDMS (GIP-PDMS). The ice adhesion strength of GIP-PDMS under static and dynamic icing conditions was comparatively investigated. The results show that GIP-PDMS displayed excellent anti-icing performance, and the delay freezing time of GIP-PDMS1 was ∼4554 s at −5 °C. The ice adhesion strength of GIP-PDMS was much lower than that of P-PDMS, owing to the distinct modulus between the two-phase skeletons and/or gel. The simulation results indicated that the stress concentration promoted ice fracture and contributed to weak ice adhesion. Molecular dynamics further showed that the state of the molecular chains and the interfacial interaction between ice and PDMS gel at 268 K helped to decrease the shear force.

An anti-icing coating with superhydrophobic and photothermal properties for aircraft icing protection system

Lechen Yang,Yong Li,Dajun Huan,Chunling Zhu

To address the hazards posed by icing environments on flight safety, a series of anti-icing measures for aircraft have gradually developed. However, with the continuous enhancement of aircraft aerodynamic performance, especially the desire for engines and propellers to achieve higher fuel efficiency, optimization of modern aircraft anti-icing protection systems is required. Here, a method was proposed for creating a robust superhydrophobic photothermal coating with a micro-nano hierarchical structure by spraying on ice-prone areas of the aircraft, aimed at reducing the high energy consumption and cost of anti-icing systems. The superhydrophobic structure on the coating surface exhibited a static water contact angle of 159.5° and extremely low liquid adhesion, demonstrating excellent stability after mechanical wear, chemical corrosion, and ultraviolet irradiation tests. This structure allowed droplets to rebound quickly upon impact with the coating and completely detach within 11 ms, and could significantly delay the icing time of droplets on the coating surface in low-temperature environments, showing good anti-icing performance. The photothermal conversion performance of the coating ensured effective self-deicing under sunny conditions. Furthermore, icing wind tunnel tests validated the coating's anti-icing performance and photothermal effects, revealing that this coating could significantly reduce ice accumulation thickness. The results of this study provide options for achieving a low-energy, low-cost, and sustainable aircraft anti-icing protection system, conducive to the development of new anti-icing technologies.

Effect of anti-icing coating functional groups on ice adhesion

Jun Chen,Marcus Björling,Pär Marklund,Yijun Shi

Unwanted ice build-up is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, which creates a series of catastrophic impacts on a wide range of human activities. Various anti/de-icing materials have been proposed for dealing with icing issues. Superhydrophobic anti/de-icing coatings have been widely reported since it has high efficiency and can be achieved in different ways. The surface functional groups have a significant influence on surface energy which is related to surface wettability. However, the influence of the coating surfaces functional groups on the anti-/de-icing properties is still not well studied. To investigate this influence, different groups with different hydrophilicity have been introduced to 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-Tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) to fabricate several branch copolymer ice-phobic coatings. The anti-icing performance and the influence of group radius and interaction were studied. The acrylic acid TFOA showed a great superhydrophobic property (over 150° water contact angle), lower ice adhesion strength (<50 kPa), and lower wear depth compared with other copolymer coatings. The mechanism was studied via the molecular dynamic calculation carried out in ChemDraw software. The interaction between hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups and the steric length of the hydrophilic groups influence the surface structure and surface element distribution, further influencing the ice adhesion strength.

Breathable and Self-Healing Photothermal Superhydrophobic Coating Featuring Exceptional Liquid Impalement Resistance and Anti-/Deicing Capabilities for Concrete Materials

Yuanlong Wu,Lei Dong,Xin Shu,Youfa Zhang,Qianping Ran

Ice accumulation and moisture condensation pose significant challenges to the longevity and performance of modern architectural materials. Superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings often suffer mechanical and chemical degradation, particularly in outdoor settings subject to heavy rain or impact. Additionally, most existing coatings are airtight, leading to humidity accumulation and potential substrate deterioration, especially in cement-based materials. To address these challenges, we developed a nonfluorinated, breathable superhydrophobic coating by spraying a PDMS-IPDI-TFB supramolecular network (PIT) mixed with polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs). The optimized superhydrophobic coating (PSC-40) exhibits high breathability, prevents blistering or cracking, and demonstrates exceptional mechanical and chemical durability. Remarkably, it withstands high-speed water jet impacts (We = 16,000) and retains superhydrophobicity after mechanical and chemical damage. The coating also possesses self-healing capabilities via hydrogen bonds and dynamic covalent bonds, enabling recovery under sunlight, room temperature, or underwater conditions. Its anti-icing performance is evident from a delayed water freezing time (−15 °C) of 1610 s and significantly reduced ice adhesion strength (32.6 kPa). Under sunlight, the coating rapidly melts ice droplets and layers within 138 and 695 s, respectively. This work introduces a robust, breathable superhydrophobic coating with self-healing and anti/deicing capabilities, offering scalable solutions for outdoor, concrete-based architectural applications.

Slippery Photothermal Trap for Outstanding Deicing Surfaces

Jamil Muhammad Imran,Wang Qiongyan,Ali Amjad,Hussain Munir,Aziz Tariq,Zhan Xiaoli,Zhang Qinghua

Ice accumulation is a safety and operational threat in power lines, wind turbines, and transportations. Surfaces having both passive anti-icing and active deicing functionalities are very rare. Here, we report a self-cleaning slippery photothermal trap, which is icephobic passively and deice the surfaces actively by converting sun light to heat at the ice-substrate interface. The photothermal trap consists of three layers: a candle soot layer act as solar radiation absorber, a magnetic iron oxide Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles layer act as heat spreader for lateral dispersal of sun light, and Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) insulation to reduce the transverse heat loss. Upon illumination under microsolar 300, the temperature of the surface increased by 40 °C within 200 s. The heat confinement at the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles layer leads to rapid increase of the surface temperature, ice start to melt and silicone lubricant facilitates the ice removal. The slippery photothermal trap removed the frozen droplet (10 µL) within 40 s upon the illumination of sun light and the frozen droplet was completely converted into water after 7 min illumination of solar light at −20 °C. The developed slippery photothermal trap also melted the fully frost covered layer within 100 s at −20 °C under sunlamp. The average defrosted length (25 mm) was also observed by irradiation of laser light for 45 s. The self-cleaning slippery photothermal coating showed outstanding deicing performance at subzero temperature for long term due to the infusion of silicone oil into the nanostructures and same chemical composition with binder.

Flexible Mushroom-Like Cross-Scale Surface with Extreme Pressure Resistance for Telecommunication Lines Anti-Icing/Deicing

Xiaopeng Wang,Yi Yang,Sensen Xuan,Guoqiang Li,Jiasong Liu,Yuegan Song,Yuan Wang,Yucai Ge,Xiaoxin Li,Yi Long,Qin Zeng,Huijuan Li,Jiaxin Yu

Ice accretion caused by freezing rain or snowstorms is a common phenomenon in cold climates that seriously threatens the safety and reliability of telecommunication lines and other overhead networks. Various anti-icing strategies have been demonstrated through surface engineering to delay ice formation. However, existing anti-icing surfaces still encounter several challenges; for example, surfaces are prone to ice-pinning formation due to the impact of supercooled droplets, which leads to a loss of anti-icing effectiveness. In this study, a mushroom-like cross-scale surface (MCS) with extreme pressure resistance and superior anti-ice-pinning property was reported. Specifically, the designed MCS, featuring multiscale microfeatures, re-entrant structure, heterogeneous sidewalls, and nanoscale particles, exhibits excellent anti-icing properties. Ice formation was determined to occur through a process involving liquid penetration, condensation, icing, and frost filling. By establishing an anti-ice -pinning model and a bubble column model, the relationship between structural characteristics and anti-icing performance was clarified. The MCS demonstrates excellent static liquid repellency (contact angle >167°) and robust dynamic impact resistance (water impact with Weber number ≥300). Furthermore, it exhibits an ultralow ice adhesion strength of 0.46 kPa. Notably, the ice adhesion strength remains below 5 kPa even after 15 deicing cycles. The anti-ice-pinning mechanism and robust icephobicity induced by the micromorphologies of MCS provide valuable insights for effective anti-icing prospects in telecommunication line surfaces and other areas in the field of information and communication technology.
