In this study, the Cu 0.5 Ni 0.5 MnCoO 4 (CNMC) material was developed for use in the cathode of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the spinel structure and demonstrated compatibility with Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte at elevated temperatures. The conductivity of CNMC was found to be between 28 and 55 S cm −1 at temperatures ranging from 700 to 900 °C. Oxygen-temperature programmed desorption (O 2 -TPD) revealed that CNMC powder possesses effective oxygen catalytic characteristics. To enhance performance, CNMC was combined with Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 2-δ (GDC, H2-bank Co. Ltd.) in a mass ratio of 3:7 (CG37). The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of this composite was measured at 12.8 × 10 −6 K −1 , closely matching that of YSZ and avoiding the issue of strontium segregation, eliminating the need for a barrier layer between the electrolyte and the cathode. The peak power densities of CG37 reached 1175 mW cm −2 and 905 mW cm −2 at 800 °C and 750 °C, respectively. CG37 underwent testing for 1000 h under constant-current discharge at 600 mA cm −2 and 750 °C, showing a voltage degradation rate of 2.5 %/kh. The cell's microstructure remained intact without any signs of elemental diffusion or segregation, indicating excellent chemical compatibility and stable structural integrity. This research is expected to further advance the study and utilization of novel solid oxide fuel cells.

A high-performance anode of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) should possess excellent electrocatalytic activity, high oxygen-ion/electron conductivity, and sufficient operational stability, thus requiring a delicate tuning of both the bulk and surface properties of the electrode materials. Constructing heterostructures to obtain high electrocatalytic activity catalysts is an essential but challenging research direction. Herein, a novel composite anode constructed with multiphase nanoparticles is rationally designed and prepared using intelligent in situ reconstruction technique. The self-assembled La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Ni 0.7 Co 0.15 Fe 0.15 O 3-δ -Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 2 (LCNCF-SDC) anode was in situ reconstructed under reducing atmosphere to form uniform NiCoFe/CeO 2 /La 2 O 3 multiphase heterostructures. As a result, the maximum power densities of a cell supported by 500 μm-thick Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 2-δ -carbonate electrolyte layer with the LCNCF-SDC anode reach 1.34 and 1.56 W cm −2 at 700 °C, respectively for using H 2 and methanol as fuels. The synergy between multiphase nanoparticles contributes to the enhanced catalytic activity and stability. This anode demonstrates negligible degradation over 15 h in CH 3 OH, indicating a significantly enhanced coking resistance.

Replacing the ceramic support of a conventional solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a metal support is an active research trend for improving the robustness of SOFC. We report metal-supported SOFC (M-SOFC) prepared based on Ni–Fe alloy supports with different Ni to Fe atomic ratios. The results show a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3 ratio has a more homogeneous and balanced microstructure and mechanical strength. Besides metal support selection, the type of cathode also plays a key role on improving the performance of a M-SOFC. In this study, we choose SSC and SDC as cathode materials and prepare composite cathodes containing different weight ratios of SSC to SDC, i.e., 3:7, 5:5, and 7:3 with a cathode sintering temperature of 950 and 1050 °C are compared as well. The combination of a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3, a SSC to SDC weight ratio of 5:5, and a cathode sintering temperature of 1050 °C yields the highest performance. The SSC-SDC55 cathode on symmetrical cell test shows a very low polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C. A tested single-cell consisting layers of Ni–Fe|NiO-YSZ|YSZ|GDC|SSC- SDC achieved a maximum power density of 1.4 W cm −2 at 800 °C, reaching one of the highest performances for Ni–Fe supported M-SOFC, proving the advantages of using Ni–Fe alloy as support for M-SOFC. The stability of our Ni–Fe alloy supported M-SOFC still needs improvement.

A set of single-phase perovskite materials, La 0.5 Pr 0.5 BaCo 2- x Fe x O 5+ δ (LPBCF- x, 0 < x ≤ 1.0) were prepared employing A/B site co-doping strategy with double lanthanide doping at A-site and partial replacement of Co with Fe at B-site. The corresponding thermal expansion behavior, thermochemical stability, electrical conductivity, and cathodic electrochemical impedance of these materials were systematically investigated. The experimental findings revealed that the doping of Fe into the B site of La 0.5 Pr 0.5 BaCo 2 O 5+ δ materials can effectively decrease the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), with most significant reduction at x ≤ 0.4. Excellent thermochemical stability of LPBCF- x materials with Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 2- δ (GDC) was also verified through co-firing the powder mixtures at 1000 °C. Rather, doping of Fe generally results in the decrease of electrical conductivity and the increase of surface specific polarization resistance, LPBCF- x materials with low Fe content demonstrated comparable excellent overall conductivity with low activation energy and low surface specific polarization resistances in various conditions compared to the non-Fe-doped LPBCF-0.0. Especially, LPBCF-0.2 can provide the best overall performance combing the evaluation of thermo-mechanical, electrical and electrochemical properties. Further analysis of the electrochemical impedance spectra revealed that the electron charge transfer or the dissociation of absorbed oxygen, depending on the temperature, is the primary rate-determining step in the oxygen transport process through LPBCF- x materials.

Ceria–zirconia solid solution nanoparticulates, Ce 1− x Zr x O 2− δ ( x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0), are impregnated into the porous 430L stainless steel scaffolds and evaluated as the anode catalysts for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Combined analyses of X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering reveal the fluorite cubic ( c ) structure up to x ≤ 0.3 transforms to a mixture of the cubic and metastable tetragonal ( t ″) phases for 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.8, with the onset of tetragonal distortions at x = 0.8. Temperature-programmed reduction in H 2 indicates that doping Zr 4+ into the ceria lattice could improve the oxygen storage capacity. Nonetheless, the charge transfer process within the bulk Ce 1− x Zr x O 2− δ or across the interfaces of Ce 1− x Zr x O 2− δ |YSZ becomes increasingly sluggish at x ≥ 0.3. The two opposite effects yield the smallest anode polarization resistances at x = 0.3, e.g. , 0.08 ± 0.01 Ω cm 2 for Ce 0.7 Zr 0.3 O 2− δ versus 0.24 ± 0.02 Ω cm 2 for CeO 2− δ or 0.26 ± 0.04 Ω cm 2 for Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2− δ at 800 °C. Furthermore, thin YSZ electrolyte fuel cells with impregnated La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 0.9 Sc 0.1 O 3− δ – YSZ cathode supports produce peak power densities of 1.24 W cm −2 at 800 °C for nano-Ce 0.7 Zr 0.3 O 2− δ @430L anodes, approximately 80% higher than 0.67–0.70 W cm −2 on nano-CeO 2− δ @430L or nano-Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2− δ @430L anodes.

Pr 2 NiO 4+δ -based (Ruddlesden-Popper) perovskite-structured oxide materials are promising candidates for low and intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) systems. In this study, we prepared a high-performance cubic-fluorite/perovskite heterostructure Pr 6 O 11 -Pr 1.2 Sr 0.8 NiO 4+δ (PO-PSNO) cathode for intermediate temperature SOFCs by solution impregnation method. By changing the impregnation amount of Pr 6 O 11 , the micro-morphology of the heterostructure was regulated, so that the heterostructure interface had the best reactive site. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of Pr 1.2 Sr 0.8 NiO 4+δ is improved, and the content of surface Sr in the heterostructure electrode material is reduced. Our results indicate that the synergistic effect of PO particles and PSNO skeleton makes the heterostructure exhibit a high oxygen surface exchange properties and catalytic performance. When the impregnation amount of PO particles reaches about 10% of the PSNO skeleton, the heterostructure has the best ORR activity. The oxygen surface exchange coefficient (K chem ) of 2-PO-PSNO is 5.8 × 10 -4 cm·s −1 , being 1.45 times as that of PSNO at 750 °C. Meanwhile, the polarization impedance (R p ) of 2-PO-PSNO is reduced by 66% to only 0.114 Ω cm 2 . Our study provides a new approach for developing high-performance RP structured perovskite cathodes and demonstrates practical applications in the field of SOFCs.

Nanoscale perovskite oxides with enhanced electrocatalytic activities have been widely used as oxygen electrodes of reversible solid oxide cells (RSOC). Here, La0.6Sr0.4FeO3−δ(LSF) nanoscale powder is synthesized via a novel molten salt method using chlorides as the reaction medium and fired at 850 °C for 5 h after removing the additives. A direct assembly method is employed to fabricate the LSF electrode without a pre-sintering process at high temperature. The microstructure characterization ensures that the direct assembly process will not damage the porosity of LSF. When operating as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), the LSF cell exhibits a peak power density of 1.36, 1.07 and 0.7 W/cm2at 800, 750 and 700 °C, respectively, while in solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode, the electrolysis current density reaches 1.52, 0.98 and 0.53 A/cm2under an electrolysis voltage of 1.3 V, respectively. Thus, it indicates that the molten salt routine is a promising method for the synthesis of highly active perovskite LSF powders for directly assembled oxygen electrodes of RSOC.Keywords:reversible solid oxide fuel cell;molten salt synthesis;interface;LSF oxygen electrode;direct assembly

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as highly effective energy conversation devices have gained substantial recognition and research interest. The electrochemical properties of the traditional SOFCs are restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics for the cathode material when lowering the operation temperature to below 600°C. In addition, the stability of the cathode at reduced temperatures is also a big challenge for the widely popularization of SOFC technology. Achieving high activities and stable ORR in the cathode is crucial for the development of SOFCs. The doping active metal method has been demonstrated as an effective approach to optimize the phase structure and improve the ORR activity of the cathode. Herein, we successfully develop an Ir-doped SrCoO 3 − δ (SrCo 0.98 Ir 0.02 O 3 − δ , SCI) cathode for SOFCs. SCI exhibits a low area-specific resistance (ASR) of 0.057 Ω cm 2 at 650°C, ~ 44% lower than 0.102 Ω cm 2 of Ir-free SrCoO 3 − δ . The Ni–Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.90 (SDC) anode-supported fuel cell with SDC electrolyte and SCI cathode obtains an excellent output performance (e.g., 1,128 mW cm −2 at 650°C). The desired results underscore the feasibility of the Ir-doping strategy as an optimized method for the exploitation of advancing cathode in SOFCs.

Summary Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can directly utilize solid carbon as fuel by integrating with the reverse Boudouard reaction in the anode chamber. Efficiency of the Boudouard gasification of solid carbon fuel is one of the crucial factors influencing the performance of direct carbon SOFCs (DC-SOFCs). In this paper, a novel Boudouard reaction catalyst derived from steel slag was first introduced into DC-SOFCs for improving the electrochemical performance. The catalytic activity of the steel slag was activated using the molten alkali method to decompose the inert mineral phases of the raw material. The steel slag–derived catalyst was loaded on the activated charcoal by a wet ball milling method. This kind of catalyst can match up to the readily available solid carbon fuels in cost. Promoted by this highly active Boudouard reaction catalyst, the initial Boudouard gasification temperature of the carbon fuel decreased by 99°C, and the producing rate of carbon monoxide doubled. Furthermore, the power outputs of the fuel cells increased from 91 to 159 mW cm −2 , and the fuel utilization increased from 17.10% to 46.43% at 825°C. This study demonstrates that the steel slag–derived catalyst is a promising material for the performance improvement of DC-SOFCs and may make a valuable contribution to their commercial application.

Cr-poisoning effect on pure double-perovskite PrBa 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 1.5 Fe 0.5 O 5+δ (PBSCF) cathode and La 2 NiO 4+δ (LN)-coated PBSCF cathode is investigated. During the Cr poisoning test at 750 °C in the presence of SUS430 interconnect, the electrochemical performance of pure PBSCF cathode shows severe degradation, and the significant increase in R P is mainly contributed by the increased R L . The BaCrO 4 deposits are identified on the PBSCF cathode surface. LN-coated PBSCF cathode, by contrast, shows remarkable tolerance towards chromium. The reaction between volatile Cr species and PBSCF cathode can be prevented by a dense LN coating. Thus, a more stable electrochemical performance is achieved by LN-coated cathode during the Cr poisoning test. The results indicate that the introduction of LN coating not only improves the cathode electrochemical performance, but also prevents the cathode from being poisoned by chromium.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have gained significant attention as highly efficient energy conversion devices. Enhancing the overall performance of SOFCs relies on the development of efficient anode materials. In this study, an impregnation approach is proposed to improve the electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite Ni-GDC anode by modulating oxygen vacancies and Ni dispersion. This method successfully achieves well-dispersed Ni nanoparticles and adequate oxygen vacancies in the NiO-GDC anode, resulting in excellent TPBs and catalytic activity for SOFCs. The NiO-GDC nanocomposite exhibits a significant improvement in electrochemical activity, reaching a peak power density of 0.37 W/cm2 at 850 °C. Moreover, it demonstrates remarkable durability with a degradation rate of only 0.1%/h at −380 mA/cm2. This study provides valuable insights into the modulation of oxygen vacancies and Ni dispersion in nanocomposite Ni-GDC anodes, underscoring their potential as high-performance materials for solid oxide fuel cells. These findings contribute to the advancement of superior anode materials with improved electrochemical performance, holding tremendous potential for the development of more efficient and reliable SOFCs.

Structural design/doping strategy is an efficient method to prepare electrolytes with high oxygen ionic conductivity , but there is still hindrance for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) commercialization. Recent advances in semiconductor ionic materials have developed a novel strategy in designing low-temperature electrolyte materials. Here, a heterostructure composite of LSFC (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Fe 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 3-δ ) and SDC (Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 2−δ ) is developed. The LSFC-SDC composite exhibits a high ionic conductivity, >0.1S/cm at 550 °C. With symmetrical NCAL (Ni 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 LiO 2-δ )-coated electrode, cells with SDC-LSFC electrolyte exhibit high open-circuit voltage (OCV), and achieve a significant power improvement (>1000 mW/cm 2 ) compared with pure SDC electrolyte at 550 °C. The short-term stability result has proven the operating ability of SDC-LSFC electrolyte under fuel cell environment (H 2 /air). This work demonstrates a new developing route of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LTSOFC), which is different from the conventional SOFC.
