Tunable d-Limonene Permeability in Starch-Based Nanocomposite Films Reinforced by Cellulose Nanocrystals

Siyuan Liu,Xiaoxi Li,Ling Chen,Lin Li,Bing Li,Jie Zhu

In order to control d-limonene permeability, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used to regulate starch-based film multiscale structures. The effect of sphere-like cellulose nanocrystal (CS) and rod-like cellulose nanocrystal (CR) on starch molecular interaction, short-range molecular conformation, crystalline structure, and micro-ordered aggregated region structure were systematically discussed. CNC aspect ratio and content were proved to be independent variables to control d-limonene permeability via film-structure regulation. New hydrogen bonding formation and increased hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) relative crystallinity could be the reason for the lower d-limonene permeability compared with tortuous path model approximation. More hydrogen bonding formation, higher HPS relative crystallinity and larger size of micro-ordered aggregated region in CS0.5 and CR2 could explain the lower d-limonene permeability than CS2 and CR0.5, respectively. This study provided new insight for the control of the flavor release from starch-based films, which favored its application in biodegradable food packaging and flavor encapsulation.

Stretchable conductive shape-memory nanocomposites for programmable electronics via photo-mediated multiscale structural design

Zhenyu Zheng,Qiwei Zhang,Shuailong Ren,Ming Lei,Fenghua Zhang,Ping Zhang,You Yu,Hongqiu Wei

Conductive shape-memory nanocomposites are very promising in flexible electronics, soft robotics, wearable sensors, etc. However, achieving a balance between conductivity, shape-memory behavior, and stretchability is still challenging in this field. Here, we report stretchable conductive shape-memory nanocomposites (SCSMNCs) prepared through photo-mediated multiscale structural design (PMMSD). At a molecular level, we utilize highly efficient photo-mediated radical polymerization and hydrogen abstraction reaction to fast construct a conjoined polymeric network in one step (∼68 s). Hybrid nanofibers are, meanwhile, introduced to generate highly conductive networks. This rational design facilitates the fabrication of nanocomposites simultaneously exhibiting excellent shape-memory behavior, high conductivity, improved mechanical properties, and rapid gelation. Mechanics-guided metamaterial design can be then produced in macro-scale by additive manufacturing to further increase the stretchability of the nanocomposites without compromising other key properties. Consequently, benefitting from the PMMSD strategy, the stretching strain of SCSMNCs improves significantly by 19 times compared to the samples lacking network and structural design, with conductivity > 10 5  S/m, shape fixation ratio and shape recovery ratio > 95 %. Notably, the combination of the increased stretchability, high conductivity and excellent shape-memory behavior endows the SCSMNCs with adaptive electrical and mechanical properties over long ranges. Based on these advanced performances, we demonstrate the utility of the designed SCSMNCs as function-programmable electromagnetic interference shields and wearable sensors. We anticipate this study will pave a new way for the design and application of high-performance SCSMNCs.

Multiscale Structural Modulation of Anisotropic Graphene Framework for Polymer Composites Achieving Highly Efficient Thermal Energy Management

Wen Dai,Le Lv,Tengfei Ma,Xiangze Wang,Junfeng Ying,Qingwei Yan,Xue Tan,Jingyao Gao,Chen Xue,Jinhong Yu,Yagang Yao,Qiuping Wei,Rong Sun,Yan Wang,Te-Huan Liu,Tao Chen,Rong Xiang,Nan Jiang,Qunji Xue,Ching-Ping Wong,Shigeo Maruyama,Cheng-Te Lin

Graphene is usually embedded into polymer matrices for the development of thermally conductive composites, preferably forming an interconnected and anisotropic framework. Currently, the directional self-assembly of exfoliated graphene sheets is demonstrated to be the most effective way to synthesize anisotropic graphene frameworks. However, achieving a thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE) over 1500% with per 1 vol% graphene content in polymer matrices remains challenging, due to the high junction thermal resistance between the adjacent graphene sheets within the self-assembled graphene framework. Here, a multiscale structural modulation strategy for obtaining highly ordered structure of graphene framework and simultaneously reducing the junction thermal resistance is demonstrated. The resultant anisotropic framework contributes to the polymer composites with a record-high thermal conductivity of 56.8–62.4 W m −1 K −1 at the graphene loading of ≈13.3 vol%, giving an ultrahigh TCE per 1 vol% graphene over 2400%. Furthermore, thermal energy management applications of the composites as phase change materials for solar-thermal energy conversion and as thermal interface materials for electronic device cooling are demonstrated. The finding provides valuable guidance for designing high-performance thermally conductive composites and raises their possibility for practical use in thermal energy storage and thermal management of electronics.

Harnessing nanoconfinement-enhanced hydrogen bonding and multi-scale structures for high-performance sustainable foam materials

Kaixiong Zhao,Kangsi Zhou,Xu Chang,Shuming Liu,Weizhao Hu,Yanbei Hou

Developing sustainable, high-performance materials is crucial to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly, multifunctional solutions across industries. Traditional plastic-based foams can take centuries to degrade, contributing significantly to environmental pollution. This study introduces an innovative organic-inorganic composite ink suitable for direct ink writing to fabricate high-strength, sustainable foam materials. The ink formulation is composed of gelatin, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and Co 3 O 4 -loaded silica nanofibers (named as CSNFs). The foam prepared from this ink is named as GC, where GC-10 represents GC containing 10 wt% CSNFs. The nanoscale dimensions and high surface area of CSNFs facilitate physical entanglement within the foam matrix. Additionally, H-bond nanoconfinement, combined with the organic-inorganic multi-scale network, significantly enhances the structural stability of GC foams. The formulated ink demonstrates excellent printability, forming a porous structure after freeze-drying. GC-10 exhibits enhanced thermal insulation (0.048 W/m•K), high mechanical performance (compression modulus of 3111.1 ± 300 kPa), and reduced smoke toxicity, with a peak CO release 72.4 % lower than GC. Notably, GC foams can be recycled without any loss in performance. Additionally, CSNFs are recoverable through centrifugation, minimizing environmental impact. This closed-loop recycling strategy, incorporating water solvent recovery, addresses a critical need in sustainable materials engineering. It emphasizes the potential of organic-inorganic integration in developing high-performance, multifunctional materials.

Biosustainable Multiscale Transparent Nanocomposite Films for Sensitive Pressure and Humidity Sensors

Jingjiang Wei,Zhikang Wang,Fei Pan,Tianyu Yuan,Yuanlai Fang,Caiqin Gao,Hang Ping,Yanqing Wang,Shanyu Zhao,Zhengyi Fu

Light weight, thinness, transparency, flexibility, and insulation are the key indicators for flexible electronic device substrates. The common flexible substrates are usually polymer materials, but their recycling is an overwhelming challenge. Meanwhile, paper substrates are limited in practical applications because of their poor mechanical and thermal stability. However, natural biomaterials have excellent mechanical properties and versatility thanks to their organic–inorganic multiscale structures, which inspired us to design an organic–inorganic nanocomposite film. For this purpose, a bio-inspired multiscale film was developed using cellulose nanofibers with abundant hydrophilic functional groups to assist in dispersing hydroxyapatite nanowires. The thickness of the biosustainable film is only 40 μm, and it incorporates distinctive mechanical properties (strength: 52.8 MPa; toughness: 0.88 MJ m–3) and excellent optical properties (transmittance: 80.0%; haze: 71.2%). Consequently, this film is optimal as a substrate employed for flexible sensors, which can transmit capacitance and resistance signals through wireless Bluetooth, showing an ultrasensitive response to pressure and humidity (for example, responding to finger pressing with 5000% signal change and exhaled water vapor with 4000% signal change). Therefore, the comprehensive performance of the biomimetic multiscale organic–inorganic composite film confers a prominent prospect in flexible electronics devices, food packaging, and plastic substitution.

Highly transparent-hazy multiscale films made of bamboo cellulose micro-and nanomaterials through a one-pot approach

Yu Chen,Yunyan Xiao,Juan Long,Kaimeng Xu,Tuhua Zhong

A facile approach was developed for fabricating transparent-hazy multiscale cellulose films . Initially, a mixture of cellulose micro- and nanomaterials (CMNM) was prepared through rapid succinylation of bamboo cellulosic materials at room temperature for 10 min, followed by mechanical disintegration in a food blender for an additional 10 min. This process yielded multiscale transparent films as water evaporated. By manipulating molar ratios of succinic anhydride (SA) to anhydroglucose unit (AGU) during esterification, the multiscale films possessed a haze ranging from 59.2 % to 92.3 %, while retaining high transparency of up to 90.5 %. The dual micro- and nano-network structure endowed the films with excellent flexibility and mechanical performance (tensile strength of 105 MPa and modulus of 6.0 GPa). The developed multiscale films demonstrated to effectively enhance the luminescence uniformity of the light-emitting diode (LED) light while exhibited a notable anti-glare effect, suggesting its potential of these films for various light management applications.

Biomimetic Architectured Graphene Aerogel with Exceptional Strength and Resilience

Miao Yang,Nifang Zhao,Ying Cui,Weiwei Gao,Qian Zhao,Chao Gao,Hao Bai,Tao Xie

Materials combining lightweight, robust mechanical performances, and multifunctionality are highly desirable for engineering applications. Graphene aerogels have emerged as attractive candidates. Despite recent progresses, the bottleneck remains how to simultaneously achieve both strength and resilience. While multiscale architecture designs may offer a possible route, the difficulty lies in the lack of design guidelines and how to experimentally achieve the necessary structure control over multiple length scales. The latter is even more challenging when manufacturing scalability is taken into account. The Thalia dealbata stem is a naturally porous material that is lightweight, strong, and resilient, owing to its architecture with three-dimensional (3D) interconnected lamellar layers. Inspired by such, we assemble graphene oxide (GO) sheets into a similar architecture using a bidirectional freezing technique. Subsequent freeze-drying and thermal reduction results in graphene aerogels with highly tunable 3D architectures, consequently an unusual combination of strength and resilience. With their additional electrical conductivity, these graphene aerogels are potentially useful for mechanically switchable electronics. Beyond such, our study establishes bidirectional freezing as a general method to achieve multiscale architectural control in a scalable manner that can be extended to many other material systems.

Synergistic reinforcement and multiscaled design of lightweight heat protection and insulation integrated composite with outstanding high-temperature resistance up to 2500 °C

Xiangyu Jin,Can Wu,Hebing Wang,Yiwu Pan,He Huang,Wei Wang,Jiahui Fan,Xiaojie Yan,Changqing Hong,Xinghong Zhang

Developing lightweight and efficient ablation-resistant materials with thermal insulation and conformability over 2500 °C is extremely important for the thermal protection of hypervelocity aerospace vehicles, but significant challenges remain. Herein, a unique lightweight heat protection and insulation integrated composite (QCF/SPA) is developed by a hierarchical construction strategy, integrating macro-scale quartz/carbon hybrid fiber preform , micro-scale silicone aerogel, and nanoscale phenolic aerogel. The QCF/SPA with the macro-micro-nano multiscale structure has the advantages of low-density nature (0.33 ± 0.02 g/cm 3 ), superior insulation (0.050–0.063 W/(m·K)), excellent thermal stability, and mechanical strength . More importantly, the QCF/SPA has outstanding ablation resistance and thermal insulation based on the efficient dual silicon & dual carbon multiple synergistic mechanism originally proposed in this work. The line ablation rate and mass ablation rate reached 0.058 mm/s and 0.014 g/s under the 3.62 MW/m 2 oxyacetylene assessment. The as-fabricated QCF/SPA with these combined properties is ideal for thermal protection systems of hypervelocity spacecraft, space re-entry vehicles, rocket propulsion devices, and missile launchers.

A Multi-Scale Structural Engineering Strategy for High-Performance MXene Hydrogel Supercapacitor Electrode

Xianwu Huang,Jiahui Huang,Dong Yang,Peiyi Wu

MXenes as an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material have attracted tremendous interest in electrochemical energy-storage systems such as supercapacitors. Nevertheless, 2D MXene flakes intrinsically tend to lie flat on the substrate when self-assembling as electrodes, leading to the highly tortuous ion pathways orthogonal to the current collector and hindering ion accessibility. Herein, a facile strategy toward multi-scale structural engineering is proposed to fabricate high-performance MXene hydrogel supercapacitor electrodes. By unidirectional freezing of the MXene slurry followed by a designed thawing process in the sulfuric acid electrolyte, the hydrogel electrode is endowed with a three-dimensional (3D) open macrostructure impregnated with sufficient electrolyte and H + -intercalated microstructure, which provide abundant active sites for ion storage. Meanwhile, the ordered channels bring through-electrode ion and electron transportation pathways that facilitate electrolyte infiltration and mass exchange between electrolyte and electrode. Furthermore, this strategy can also be extended to the fabrication of a 3D-printed all-MXene micro-supercapacitor (MSC), delivering an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 2.0 F cm –2 at 1.2 mA cm –2 and retaining 1.2 F cm –2 at 60 mA cm –2 together with record-high energy density (0.1 mWh cm –2 at 0.38 mW cm –2 ).

Insight into konjac glucomannan-retarding deterioration of steamed bread during frozen storage: Quality characteristics, water status, multi-scale structure, and flavor compounds

Fen Zhao,Jinying Guo,Gege Zhang,Lantian Zhang

Konjac glucomannan (KGM), a water-soluble hydrocolloid, holds considerable potential in the food industry, especially for improving the quality and nutritional properties of frozen products. This study explored the alleviative effect of KGM on the quality characteristics, water status, multi-scale structure, and flavor compounds of steamed bread throughout frozen storage. KGM significantly improved the quality of steamed bread by slowing down the decrease in water content and the increase in water migration while maintaining softness and taste during frozen storage. Notably, KGM also delayed amylopectin retrogradation and starch recrystallization, thus preserving the texture and structure of the steamed bread. At week 3, the microstructure of the steamed bread with 1.0 % KGM remained intact, with the lowest free sulfhydryl content. Additionally, heat map analysis revealed that KGM contributed to flavor retention in steamed bread frozen for 3 weeks. These results indicate that KGM holds promise as an effective cryoprotectant for improving the quality of frozen steamed bread.

Nature-inspired wood-like TPU/CB aerogels for high performance flexible strain sensors

Wang Guanyu,Yang Yadong,Cao Wenzhe,Wan Caichao

Strain sensors based on porous conductive polymers (CPCs) have garnered growing research interest for their potential applications in motion detection, healthcare, human–computer interaction, and artificial intelligence. However, the complexity of CPC processing makes it difficult to achieve the controlled design of microscopic porous structures, leading to simple and random porous structures, thus limiting their further use in the field of pressure sensing. This paper presents a strain sensor with a high-performance, wood-like structure composed of flexible conductive carbon black/plastic polyurethane foam (BWCT) using a bidirectional freeze casting process. The results show that, compared with conventional random freezing and unidirectional freezing, the bidirectional freeze casting process can effectively realize multiscale control of the composite structure, which results in a good laminar porous structure of the prepared BWCT. This parallel laminar structure not only contributes to the layered transfer of stresses but also avoids the local concentration of stresses. At the same time, it significantly increases the directional electrical conduction ability, which results in high sensing stability performance. In particular, the BWCT sensors had a wide detection range (80%), a lower limit of detection (0.2%), rapid response and relaxation times (200 ms), as well as exceptional durability (>2000 cycles). Furthermore, the BWCT was integrated into a wearable sensor to monitor various human motions, including arm bending, squatting, and walking, demonstrating reliable detection performance. Altogether, the BWCT sensors are promising in expanding the application but also offer guidance for designing high-performance wearable strain sensors.

Ultra-robust polyurethane/lignin elastomer built on multiscale structure orientation induced by pre-stretching

Weijun Yang,Yu Zhang,Bing Li,Xiang Zhang,Debora Puglia,Deyu Niu,Pengwu Xu,Piming Ma

This work focuses on a simple approach for designing the polyurethane elastomers with ultra-robust properties. Initially, polyurethane/lignin elastomers were synthesized using polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG) as soft segment, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) along with 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl ether (DO) as hard segments, and lignin nanoparticles (LNP) as the biomacromolecule crosslinker. Subsequently, the resulting elastomer were pre-stretched at certain ratios (λ), and surprisingly, the pre-stretched polyurethane/lignin elastomer (λ=14) displayed significant improvement in mechanical properties, while the tensile strength and toughness were sharply enhanced from 32.4 MPa and 298.7 MJ/m3 to 120.2 MPa and 501.3 MJ/m3, respectively. The improvement can be attributed to the denser cross-linked networks combined with the multiscale structure orientation and stress-induced crystallization (SIC) effects induced by pre-stretching. The interphase distance (d_p) decreased from 15.708 to 14.612 nm, while the interplanar crystal distance (d_c) increased from 4.387 Å to 4.398 Å, and the Herman orientation factor (f) increased from -0.0066 to 0.0518. This work presents a novel strategy for preparing polyurethane elastomers with exceptional mechanical performance.
