Soil is the main aggregation site of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and an important pathway of migration to other media. In this paper, the adsorption behavior of pyrene and seven different types of surfactants on kaolinite surfaces was studied by molecular dynamics simulation and desorption testing. The molecular dynamics simulation results showed that pyrene was more easily adsorbed on the 001 (-) side of kaolinite. SDBS, SDS, TW80, and TX-100 had strong interactions with pyrene, encapsulating pyrene molecules in aggregates. However, when the concentration of surfactant was too high, the desorption of pyrene molecules on a kaolinite surface will be inhibited. The desorption of pyrene molecules will be inhibited in the presence of BS-12, TW80, and TX-100, while the desorption process can be promoted by using CTAC, DDBAC, SDBS, and SDS as soil remediation agents. The removal rate of pyrene gradually increased with the increase of SDS dosage, while for SDBS, the removal rate showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. When the concentration of SDS was 0.014 mol/L, the elution rate of pyrene reached 72.86%. The molecular dynamics simulation results were similar to the desorption test results, verifying the reliability of molecular dynamics simulation. The research results provide theoretical support for the selection of surfactants in the remediation process of pyrene-contaminated soil. Keywords:soil remediation;polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons;surfactants;molecular simulation

Brazil nuts are rich in lipids, but the effects of supercritical CO₂ extraction (SC-CO₂) on their oil quality remain unclear. This study investigated the lipid composition and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination of Brazil nut oils obtained via SC-CO₂ and cold pressing (SFEO and PO) using untargeted lipidomics and targeted mass spectrometry. A total of 156 lipids were identified across all the samples, with significant compositional differences. SFEO contained fewer phospholipids (9 species, 0.85 μg/g) than PO (20 species, 35.67 μg/g), but higher levels of diglycerides and free fatty acids. The most abundant triacylglycerol in oils was TG 18:1_18:1_18:1. SFEO contained relatively high concentrations of PAHs and oxygenated PAHs, with naphthalene and 9-fluorenone at the highest levels. Toxic equivalency quotients (TEQs) were 0.35 μg/kg for PO and 2.49 μg/kg for SFEO. These findings provide new insights into the impact of supercritical CO₂ extraction on oil quality and PAH safety risks.

Thermal desorption technology at low temperatures has been extensively researched. However, the challenge remains in maintaining soil ecological function while effectively removing PAHs from contaminated soil using this method. Based on the gas hammer fragmentation concept, this study presents the strategy of gas stripping (steam extraction) coupled with microwave remediation. A multifunctional bluecoke-based modifier (MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC) was prepared followed by an investigation on the removal effect, soil characteristics and remediation mechanism of MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC-assisted microwave remediation of pyrene (PAHs model) contaminated soil. The research findings indicate that MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC is more effective in generating oxygen vacancies, facilitating surface electron transfer , and enhancing the oxidation effect of ROS on pyrene compared to KHCO 3 @BC and MnO 2 @BC. Despite having slightly inferior electromagnetic properties to BC, MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC could achieve a microwave remediation temperature of approximately 300 °C under optimal experimental conditions. MnO 2 /KHCO 3 @BC demonstrated remarkable pyrene removal efficiency with a maximum removal rate of 98.34%, making it an ideal candidate for pyrene remediation. Moreover, the remediated soil exhibited a weakly acidic nature, with a significant decrease in particle size and a substantial increase in potassium content. The study also highlighted a novel synergistic mechanism of ''microwave heating - gas stripping - oxidation,'' which can efficiently remove most of the pyrene adsorbed inside and outside of soil particles and degrade it into low-toxic and small-molecule organic matter, CO 2 , and H 2 O. Overall, the findings of this study could hold potential significance for upcoming endeavours concerning polluted industrial areas.

The Jialu River, an important branch of the Huaihe River in China, was seriously polluted because of rapid economic growth and urbanization. In order to evaluate the potential for serious environmental consequences as a result of anthropogenic contamination, the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been investigated in surface sediment samples collected in connection with field surveys of 19 sites along the Jialu River. The total concentration of the 16 USEPA priority PAHs ranged from 466.0 to 2605.6 ng/g dry weight with a mean concentration of 1363.2 ng/g. Sediment samples with the highest PAH concentrations were from the upper reaches of the river, where Zhengzhou City is located; the PAH levels in the middle and lower reaches were relatively low. According to the observed molecular indices, PAHs originated largely from the high-temperature pyrolytic process. According to the numerical effect-based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) of the United States, the levels of PAHs in the Jialu River should not exert adverse biological effects. The total benzo[ a ]pyrene toxicity equivalent ( TEQ ) values calculated for samples varied from 50.4 to 312.8 ng/g dry weight with an average of 167.4 ng/g. The relationships between PAHs and environmental factors, including chemical properties of sediments, water quality, aquatic organisms, hydrological conditions, and anthropogenic activities, are also discussed. PAHs exerted a potential negative impact on the benthos. Settlement percentage, population density and industrial GDP per capita had a significant influence on the distribution of PAHs.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash has been classified as hazardous waste and needs treatment in an environmentally safe manner. Mechanochemical (MC) treatment is such a detoxification method, since it destroys dioxins and solidifies heavy metals. Milling, however, also introduces supplemental metals (Fe, Ni, Cr, Mn…), following wear of both steel balls and housing. Milling moreover reduces the particle size of fly ash and disperses catalytic metal, potentially rising the reactivity of fly ash to form and destroy ‘dioxins’, i.e. polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD + PCDF or PCDD/F). To test this issue, model fly ash (MFA) samples were composed by mixing of silica, sodium chloride, and activated carbon, and doped with CuCl 2 . Then, these samples were first finely milled without any additives for 0 h (original sample), 1 h and 8 h, and the effect of milling time (and hence particle size) was investigated on the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and of polychlorinated phenols (CP), benzenes (CBz), biphenyls (PCB) and dioxins (PCDD + PCDF) during de novo tests at 300 °C for 1 h, thus simulating the conditions prevailing in the post-combustion zone of an incinerator, where dioxins are formed and destroyed. These compounds are all characterized by their rate of generation (ng/g MFA) and their signature, i.e. internal distribution over congeners as a means of gathering mechanistic indications. PAH and CBz total yield did not decrease in MC treated MFA with milling time, while total pentachlorophenol (PeCP), PCB and PCDD/F yield decreased up to 86, 94 and 97%, respectively. International Toxic Equivalents (I-TEQ) concentration decreased more than 90%, while degree of chlorination varied inconsistently for PCB and PCDD/F, and average congener patterns of PCDD/F do not vary considerably with milling time for both gas and solid phase.

Microbial degradation is a useful tool for inhibiting or preventing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) widely distributed in marine environment after oil spill accidents. This study aimed to evaluate the potential and diversity of bacteria Bacillus sp. PAH-2 on Benzo (a) anthracene (BaA), Pyrene (Pyr), and Benzo (a) pyrene (BaP), their composite system, aromatic components system, and crude oil. The seven-day degradation rates against BaA, Pyr, and BaP were 20.6%, 12.83%, and 17.49%, respectively. Further degradation study of aromatic components demonstrated PAH-2 had a high degradation rate of substances with poor stability of molecular structure. In addition, the degradation of PAHs in crude oil suggested PAH-2 not only made good use of PAHs in such a more complex structure of pollutants but the saturated hydrocarbons in the crude oil also showed a good application potential.

Enhanced microbial remediation represents a promising technique for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, high-efficiency remediation agents remain limited, including microbial resources and remediation materials. In this study, a novel strain of Pseudomonas xizangensis S4 was isolated from plateau lake sediment, exhibiting a fluoranthene degradation rate of 41.90 % at 50 ppm within 7 d. The key degradation genes identified through genomic and transcriptomic analyses included ndmC , dmpK , dmpB , and dmpH . The metabolites detected via GC–MS analysis were biphenyls, parabens, and phthalate esters. Based on the above results, the degradation mechanisms of fluoranthene were deduced. Furthermore, an efficient remediation agent was developed, utilizing potassium humate-modified biochar to immobilize bacterial cells. The developed remediation agent enhanced the removal efficiency by 16.71 % compared to the single strain. Thus, the application of potassium humate-modified biochar for the immobilization of P. xizangensis S4 represents a promising method for the remediation of PAH-contaminated soil.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic organic pollutants. Phenanthrene often serves as a model compound for studying PAHs biodegradation. In this work, we firstly engineered Escherichia coli M01 containing seven phenanthrene degradation genes and combined it with existing engineered strains E. coli M2 and M3 to form an artificial three-bacteria consortium, named M0123, which exhibited a degradation ratio of 64.66% for 100 mg/L of phenanthrene over 8 days. Subsequently, we constructed engineered Pseudomonas putida KTRL02 which could produce 928.49 mg/L rhamnolipids and integrated it with M0123, forming a four-bacteria consortium with an impressive 81.62% phenanthrene degradation ratio. Assessment of extracellular adenosine levels during the degradation process indicated high cellular energy demand in the four-bacteria consortium. Then, we introduced Bacillus subtilis RH33, a riboflavin-producing strain, as an energy-supplying bacterium, to create a five-bacteria consortium, which exhibited an 88.19% degradation ratio for phenanthrene. The NADH/NAD + ratio in the five-bacteria consortium during the degradation process was monitored, which was consistently higher than that of the four-bacteria consortium over the eight-day period, indicating a higher overall intracellular reduction capacity. Furthermore, the five-bacteria consortium displayed good tolerance to phenanthrene, even achieving a degradation ratio of 79.38% for 500 mg/L of phenanthrene. This study demonstrates that designing and constructing artificial consortia from the functional perspective and various angles can effectively enhance the degradation of phenanthrene after the addition of the energy-supplying bacterium. This study demonstrates that designing and constructing artificial labor-division consortia from the functional perspective and various angles can effectively enhance the degradation of phenanthrene.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated from heating butter pose a potential threat to consumer health. This study involved heating butter under different conditions and analysing the changes in the content of 54 PAHs. Furthermore, we investigated the inhibitory effects of β-carotene, pure astaxanthin and astaxanthin microcapsule powder on PAH formation. Results showed that heating temperature and duration affect the formation and transformation of PAHs, with higher temperatures facilitating the synthesis of oxygenated PAHs, whereas longer heating times promote the accumulation of light PAHs. Despite an observed increase in the concentration of light PAHs following heat treatment with added antioxidants, the antioxidants significantly reduced the toxic equivalency quotients (TEQs) in butter. This study revealed the PAH production pattern during butter heating and the effectiveness of antioxidants in inhibiting their accumulation.

Elucidating the oxidation chemistry of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) aids in understanding the degradation reaction processes of PAHs, as well as their competitive roles in PAH growth. In this work, ozone-assisted oxidation of indene , the smallest prototype PAH molecule, was investigated in an atmospheric jet stirred reactor at 400–550 K. Ab initio quantum chemistry calculations were conducted to characterize the oxidation kinetics of indene and interpret the experimental observations. Fingerprint oxidation products including 2-(2-oxoethyl) benzoic acid, 2-(formylmethyl) benzaldehyde , 1,2-indanedione and 1-indanone were identified by synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry . The initial C 9 H 8 O 3 adduct resulting from O 3 -addition to indene exhibits high instability and is primarily detected as 2-(2-oxoethyl)benzoic acid following ozonolysis reactions. Minor amounts of vinylhydroperoxide were also observed as isomeric products of the C 9 H 8 O 3 adduct. Theoretical calculations indicate that indene ozonolysis is highly structure-dependent, where the conformation of the C 9 H 8 O 3 adduct determines the configuration of the resulting Criegee intermediates (CI). The distinctive reaction pathways introduced by the bifunctionalized characteristics of indene-derived large CIs are emphasized in this study. syn -Configuration CI features more conversion pathways compared to anti -CI due to the interaction between CI functionality and the neighboring aldehyde group, among which the bicyclic ring-closure reaction yielding secondary ozonide is most favored. The dioxirane intermediates generated from anti -CIs can undergo the Crossed Acid-forming channel to yield the target acid products, which provides an alternative way for dioxirane conversion. Further theoretical analyses demonstrate that ozonolysis is not the exclusive mechanism for indene oxidation under O 3 -assisted conditions. Instead, it is accompanied by low-temperature reactions initiated by OH/O 2 , leading to key products such as 2-(formylmethyl) benzaldehyde and 1-indanone. The present work aims to unravel the elusive chemistry involved in the O 3 -initiated oxidation of indene, providing new insights into the distinctive kinetics introduced by large bifunctionalized CIs in the ozonolysis of structurally similar PAHs.

Arsenic (As) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic, carcinogenic and teratogenic, and are commonly found in soils of industrial sites such as coking plants. They exert environmental stresses on soil microorganisms, but their compounding effects have not been systematically studied. Exploring the effects of compound contamination on microbial communities, species and genes is important for revealing the ecological damage caused by compound contamination and offering scientific insights into soil remediation strategies. In this study, we selected soil samples from 0 to 100 cm depth of a coking site with As, PAHs and compound contamination. We investigated the compound effects of As and PAHs on microbial communities by combining high-throughput sequencing, metagenomic sequencing and genome assembly. Compared with single contamination, compound contamination reduced the microbial community diversity by 10.68%–12.07% and reduced the community richness by 8.39%–18.61%. The compound contamination decreased 32.41%–46.02% of microbial PAHs metabolic gene abundance, 11.36%–19.25% of cell membrane transport gene abundance and 12.62%–57.77% of cell motility gene abundance. Xanthobacteraceae , the biomarker for compound contaminated soils, harbors arsenic reduction genes and PAHs degradation pathways of naphthalene, benzo [a]pyrene, fluorene, anthracene, and phenanthrene. Its broad metabolic capabilities, encompassing sulfur metabolism and quorum sensing, facilitate the acquisition of energy and nutrients, thereby conferring ecological niche advantages in compound contaminated environments. This study underscores the significant impacts of As and PAHs on the composition and function of microbial communities, thereby enriching our understanding of their combined effects and providing insights for the remediation of compound contaminated sites.

Due to the high biotoxicity and persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil becomes an intractable problem. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes are widely used to degrade PAHs in aquatic environment. However, they are not convenient for used in soil due to the heterogeneity and complexity of soil matrix . In this study, a green and convenient ball milling process is introduced to activate persulfate for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. About 82.5% PAHs were removed with 10% wt. Na 2 S 2 O 8 (PS) addition and ball-milling for 2 h under 500 r/min. The degradation of PAHs is attributed to the attack of radicals (SO 4 · - and·OH) generated from the activation of PS by mechanochemistry. Moreover, stable Si-O bonds were disrupted during ball-milling process, and formed free electron on the surface of soil particles. This facilitates the electron transfer from oxidants to contaminants. The particle size, surface element composition, functional group, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the slight disturbance of ball-milling-assisted PS process on the physical and chemical properties of soil. Therefore, ball-milling assisted PS approach would be a promising technology for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.
