Flexible strain sensors based on conductive hydrogels show great potential in wearable devices, electronic skins, and bioelectronics. However, hydrogels inevitably exhibit poor durability for long-term usage due to the water loss by evaporation. Herein, an external packaging strategy is demonstrated for fabricating sandwich-like packaged hydrogel strain sensors (PHSSs) through the combination of conductive hydrogel injection and subsequent packaging via a photopolymerization procedure. The as-prepared PHSS consists of two functional parts, internal hydrogel conducting wires exhibiting excellent linear strain sensing performance as sensing element and an external packaging hydrogel layer with good transparency and conformal adhesion to human skin. Thanks to these intriguing merits, the PHSS possesses the capability to detect both the large-scale and subtle human motions precisely. Particularly, compared to conventional naked hydrogel strain sensors, the lifespan of PHSS is proved to be remarkably enlarged benefiting from the protective effect of external packaging layer towards the embedded hydrogel sensing element. Besides, the swelling property of external packaging layer even after severe dehydration enables the sensor to be reusable. This work provides a new approach for the fabrication of flexible strain sensors with enhanced lifespan and good reusability.

Flexible strain sensors have attracted the attention of researchers due to their wide range of applications in wearable electronic skin and healthcare monitoring. The fabrication of flexible strain sensors with high strength , good linear sensitivity, stability and comfort is still challenging. Here, an anisotropic silk fibroin (SF) based hydrogel is fabricated through an oriented freezing method and a low-temperature concentration is to follow. This approach combines HA with SF to increase the hydrogel's water-holding capacity, and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is doped as a conductive-sensitive component. Benefitting from the synergy of its well-designed components and the oriented internal crosslinking network structure, the hydrogel has a wide working range and a stable resistance response under 0∼80% compression strain. Especially the oriented hydrogel has ultra-high compression resilience (∼ 99%) in the orientation direction, and it is stable and durable for up to 10,000 cycles under 50% compression self-rebound. Flexible sensors made of conductive hydrogel were attached to the human body or combined with out-of-body clothing to detect human movement. Based on these findings, the prepared conductive hydrogel could be used as a wearable strain sensor material.

Currently, hydrogel sensors for health monitoring require external tapes, bandages or adhesives to immobilize them on the surface of human skin. However, these external fixation methods easily lead to skin allergic reactions and the decline of monitoring accuracy. A simple strategy to solve this problem is to endow hydrogel sensors with good adhesion. Inspired by the starch paste adhesion mechanism, a biomass-based hydrogel with good conductivity and high repetitive adhesion strength was prepared by introducing modified starch into polyacrylic acid hydrogel system. The properties of biomass-based hydrogels could be controlled by changing the proportion of amylose and amylopectin . The biomass-based hydrogel exhibited a variety of excellent properties, including good stretchability (1290 %), high adhesion strength (pig skin: 46.51 kPa) and conductivity (2.3 S/m). Noticeably, the repeated adhesive strength of biomass-based hydrogel did not decrease with the increase of adhesion times. The strain sensor based on the biomass-based hydrogel could accurately monitor the large-scale and small movements of the human body, and had broad application prospects in the field of flexible wearable devices.

In recent years, wearable multifunctional strain sensors have attracted attention for their promising applications in wearable electronics and portable devices. To achieve a high-performance wearable strain sensor with a wide sensing range and high gauge factor (GF), wisely choosing appropriate conductive materials and a rational structural design is essential. Herein, we develop a supersensitive sensor that contains one-dimensional conductive material CNT and two-dimensional material MXene built on a PDMS porous foam that is made based on a sugar template. The one-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) functionalizes as a conductive scale layer through solvent swelling and evaporation on the surface of the PDMS skeleton. The two-dimensional MXene is applied on top of the CNT layer to form final conductive pathways. The PDMS/CNT@MXene (PCM) sensor has a wide sensing range (150%), high sensitivity (GF = 26438), rapid response speed (response/recovery time of 60/71 ms), and exceptional durability (>1000 cycles) owing to its unique porous structure with scale layers and graded fracture of conductive pathways. Moreover, the PCM sensor is capable of monitoring subtle and significant human activities and is used for wireless sensing and medical diagnostics, even for solvent identification. The superior performance of the PCM sensor provides vast application potential in human movement, health monitoring, and warning devices.

An increasing attention has been paid to crack-based strain sensors due to their ultrahigh sensitivity. However, two main challenges with such sensors still need to be addressed. Firstly, most crack-based sensors face a trade-off between sensitivity and detection range. Secondly, the problem of low linearity occurs widely among crack-based sensors. This paper presents a simple and efficient method to obtain a multidimensional (1D/2D) crack-based stretchable sensor with dual conductive (electronic/ ionic) network. The process involves creating a hybrid conductive film consisting of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (MXene) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via vacuum-assisted filtration, and developing a flexible substrate with ionic conductivity through convenient UV-initiated curing. The prepared sensor exhibited a broad range of workable strain (0–389 %), high sensitivity (GF = 216.8), rapid response/ recovery (165 ms/ 86 ms) and exceptional durability. Most notably, this strain sensor demonstrates strong linearity (R 2 = 0.983) with the synergistic effect of the dual conductive network and cracked hybrid film, an advantage over other crack-based sensors. Therefore, our novel dual-conductive strain sensors, with its superior comprehensive performance, can effectively monitor various large and subtle human movements, including joint bending, pulse, and speech recognition. It is credible that this highly stretchable sensor possesses tremendous potential in human motion monitoring, personal healthcare monitoring, and human–computer interaction.

The ability of a flexible strain sensor to directly adapt the complicated human biological motion or combined gestures and remotely control the artificial intelligence robotics could benefit the wearable electronics such as intelligent robotics and patient healthcare. However, it is a challenge for the flexible strain sensor to simultaneously achieve high sensing performances and stretchability and long sustainability under various deformation stress or damage. Herein, a dual-cross-linked poly(acrylic acid–stearyl methacrylate)/MXene [P(AA–SMA)M] hydrogel with enhanced mechanical stretchability and self-healability is fabricated by importing reversible coordination and hydrophobic interaction into polymer networks. As a result, the hydrogel film not only exhibits high tensile strength (525 kPa) and stretchability (∼2600%) but also achieves repetitive healable property with 843% elongation even after the 20th broken/self-healing cycle. More importantly, the resultant strain sensor delivers a low detection limit, wide sensing range, fast response time, and repeatability of 1000 cycles even after repeated self-healing. So, the sensor can monitor subtle human motions and recognize different handwriting and gestures, which reveals potential applications toward health-care devices, flexible electronics, and human–machine interfacing.

Flexible strain sensors based on conductive hydrogels have profound implications for wearable electronics and health-monitoring systems. However, such sensors still need to integrate with energy providing devices to drive their functions. Herein, we develop a soaking-free polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl cellulose/tannic acid (PAAM/CMC/TA) hydrogel containing 2 M ZnSO4 + 0.1 M MnSO4 electrolyte for a novel zinc-ion battery-type self-powered strain sensing system. The synthesized hydrogel possesses desirable stretchability (tensile strain/stress of 622%/132 kPa), self-healing and self-adhesive properties, as well as good ionic conductivity (0.76 ± 0.04 S m−1). A mechanically durable Zn–MnO2 battery is developed using the PAAM/CMC/TA hydrogel and it can deliver a high specific capacity (223.0 mA h g−1) and maintain stable energy outputs under severe mechanical deformations. The electrochemical behavior of the battery can recover even after several self-healing cycles. Due to the excellent strain and pressure sensing properties of the PAAM/CMC/TA hydrogel, the battery combined with a fixed resistor served as a self-powered wearable sensing device, which could translate different human movements into distinguishable electrical signals without an external power supply. Our work provides guidance for the development of next-generation self-powered sensors.

In recent years, there has been a significant surge of interest in flexible strain sensors within the domains of wearable electronics and human–computer interaction. However, as these fields continue to advance rapidly, there is an urgent need to improve the comprehensive performance of flexible strain sensors including sensitivity, sensing range, response speed, and durability. In this study, we address this issue by transferring carbon black/graphene (CB/Gr) conductive nanocomposites onto the surface of an Ecoflex flexible substrate, which has been pretreated using sandpaper to enhance adhesion. The resulting flexible strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 51.4, while offering a wide sensing range of 100%. Notably, this sensor demonstrates high performance across various aspects, including a fast response time (60 ms) and excellent durability (up to 4000 stretching–releasing cycles). The versatility of this sensor is evident in its ability to effectively monitor both small strain activities, such as speech recognition, and larger strain activities, such as elbow bending. Moreover, the sensor has demonstrated outstanding performance in various application scenarios, including human health and motion condition monitoring as well as acoustic wave and vibration signals detection. Consequently, this highlights the sensor’s remarkable adaptability and substantial potential for wide-range applications in these domains.

Corrosion resistant, durable, and lightweight flexible strain sensor with multiple functionalities is an urgent demand for modern flexible wearable devices. However, currently developed wearable devices are still limited by poor environmental adaptability and functional singleness. In this work, a conductive fabric with multifunctionality in addition to sensing was successfully prepared by assembling zero dimensional silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) layer by layer on the surface of the elastic polypropylene nonwoven fabric (named PACS fabric). Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) added as binder materials favored strong interaction between conductive fillers and the fabric. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction among the conductive fillers with different dimensions and the fabric, the strain sensor based on the conductive fabric showed high sensitivity (GF up to 8064), wide detection range (0–200%), and excellent stability and durability (more than 10000 stretch–release cycles). Besides, the prepared conductive fabric showed superhydrophobicity (water contact angle = 154°) with excellent durability. This ensured the performance stability of the fabric sensor in harsh environments. At the same time, the fabric also showed excellent photothermal conversion performance (90 °C at a power density of 0.2 W/cm2 within 20 s). The PACS fabric strain sensor proved excellent performance and environmental adaptability, revealing great potential to be applied in human motion monitoring, self-cleaning, biomedicine, and other fields.

The application of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable devices has garnered significant attention. In this study, a self-healing, anti-freezing, and fire-resistant hydrogel strain sensor is successfully synthesized by incorporating sustainable natural biological materials, viz. Tremella polysaccharide and silk fiber, into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix with borax cross-linking. The resulting hydrogel exhibits excellent transparency, thermoplasticity, and remarkable mechanical properties, including a notable elongation (1107.3 %) and high self-healing rate (91.11 %) within 5 min, attributed to the dynamic cross-linking effect of hydrogen bonds and borax. A strain sensor based on the prepared hydrogel sensor can be used to accurately monitor diverse human movements, while maintaining exceptional sensing stability and durability under repeated strain cycles. Additionally, a hydrogel touch component is designed that can successfully interact with intelligent electronic devices, encompassing functions like clicking, writing, and drawing. These inherent advantages make the prepared hydrogel a promising candidate for applications in human health monitoring and intelligent electronic device interaction.

The development of stretchable materials has aroused immense interests for the applications in flexible wearable electronic devices. However, existing conductor materials can hardly meet all the requirements for use in next-generation wearable devices . In this work, a new type of fully physically cross-linked PVA/PAA/Fe 3+ hydrogel with stretchable, tough, conductive, and self-healing property is fabricated by using “one-pot” method under room temperature via free radical polymerization . These hydrogels exhibit unique features, such as high tensile strength (~1.03 MPa), high stretchability (~1370%), high toughness (~6.37 MJ/m 3 ) and excellent self-healing property (the self-healing efficiency could reach 97.34%), as well as rapid self-recovery property (the recovery ratio was 0.83 after waiting 15min). Besides, the conductivity of hydrogel can reach up to 2.67 S/m, and the conductivity of the hydrogel changes accordingly under tension , the hydrogels also have high gauge factor (GF = 3.79) and exhibited high sensitivity in the broad strain window (0–800%), indicating these ionic conductive hydrogels can be used to fabricate excellent high-performance strain sensors.

Soft strain sensors that can transduce stretch stimuli into electrical readouts are promising as sustainable wearable electronics. However, most strain sensors cannot achieve highly-sensitive and wide-range detection of ultralow and high strains. Inspired by bamboo structures, anti-freezing microfibers made of conductive poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) are developed via continuous microfluidic spinning. The microfibers provide unique bamboo-like structures with enhanced local stress to improve both their length change and resistance change upon stretching for efficient signal conversion. The microfibers allow highly-sensitive (detection limit: 0.05% strain) and wide-range (0%–400% strain) detection of ultralow and high strains, as well as features of good stretchability (485% strain) and anti-freezing property (freezing temperature: −41.1 °C), fast response (200 ms), and good repeatability. The experimental results, together with theoretical foundation analysis and finite element analysis, prove their enhanced length and resistance changes upon stretching for efficient signal conversion. By integrating microfluidic spinning with 3D-printing technique, the textiles of the microfibers can be flexibly constructed. The microfibers and their 3D-printed textiles enable high-performance monitoring of human motions including finger bending and throat vibrating during phonation. This work provides an efficient and general strategy for developing advanced conductive hydrogel microfibers as high-performance wearable strain sensors.
