Due to the great potentials in self-powered sensors and micro-nano power sources, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted numerous attentions. However, enhancing charge density and realizing direct-current (DC) are long-term significant issues for TENGs. In this work, we investigated a DC TENG with outstanding electricity generation characteristics based on quasi- synchronous double-stage self-charge pumping. The TENG works in a contact-separation mode with a four-layered parallel structure. The TENG possesses a high open-circuit voltage of 2300 V, a high short-circuit current of 3 mA, a high power of 150 mW and a superhigh transferred charge of 20 μC at 4 Hz, which are significantly enhanced from those in single-stage pumping and non pumped counterpart TENGs. The property-improving mechanism lies in that through the unidirectional self-charge pump with a slight time difference among TENGs, negative halves are moved to the adjacent positive halves, leads to the widening, higher and DC outputs at the final terminal, which employs the Plancherel theorem for peak shifting in framework of energy conservation law . The TENG can power light emitting diodes , electronic devices and an electrophoretic deposition of pigment coatings. This work provides a method for developing high-performance DC TENGs with superhigh transferred charge for various applications.

Progress toward the advancement of environmentally friendly energy harvesting devices is critical for eco-environmental protection. There is an urgent need for developing energy harvesting devices from biobased materials. However, it is still a challenge to utilize biobased cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) due to their poor mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, and weak polarization capability. Here, we demonstrate a facile strategy to fabricate a super-elastic, hydrophobic CNF/MXene composite aerogel for TENGs through fluorosilane crosslinking and a directional freeze-dried assembled structure. This aerogel can withstand up to 80% compressive strain, rebound to 95.33% of its original height, and exhibit hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 137.65°). In addition, the induction of MXene and the silane coupling agent endows the aerogel with enhanced electronegativity and charge density. These properties enable the CNF/MXene aerogel to harvest energy with an output voltage of 100 V and a short-circuit charge density of ∼900 nC cm−3, while maintaining stability for 1000 cycles. This aerogel holds great application potential in the field of self-powered sensing and raindrop energy harvesting.

Green energy from the surrounding environment has great potential for reducing environmental pollution and sustainable development. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are of great interest as they can easily harvest mechanical energy from the environment. Here, we present a triboelectric nanogenerator (RS-TENG) based on rape straw (RS), which was developed from a film composed of waste RS and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Due to the high content of carbonyl, hydroxyl and amino acid functional groups in RS, the ability of RS/PVA to lose electrons is increased. The proposed RS-TENG device with a size of 6.25 cm2 exhibits open circuit voltage (78 V), short circuit current (5.3 μA) performance under uniform external stress at a frequency of 3.5 Hz and 10 N in the cylinder motor. 104.5 μW was obtained with a load resistance of 25 MΩ. Results obtained from degradability tests revealed that the RS/PVA film was able to degrade over a period of 30 d (In PBS solution). The RS-TENG produces a significantly high current signal under conditions of finger bending, elbow movements, and foot tapping. Practical tests of the RS-TENG have shown that it is a promising sensing device that will be widely used in the future.

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (T-TENGs) have great potential in new-generation tactile sensors because their output signal is determined by the specific charge interaction between the target and triboelectric material. However, gesture recognition by existing T-TENG tactile sensors is very challenging because the electron affinity and polarity of the volunteer skin are similar. This study proposes a new structural sensor that integrates a Ni particle-encapsulated carbon tube (Ni@C tube) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by means of multiple strain mechanisms for improving recognition accuracy using a signal superposition technique. Interestingly, dynamic strain from multiple sources, i.e., PDMS layer strain (1.24–2.47 kPa), Ni@C tube crack (2.47–5.56 kPa), PDMS layer further strain (5.56–52.97 kPa), and Ni@C tube slip laterally (52.97–139.05 kPa), was established in the PDMS-coated Ni@C tube. In addition, the output signal of the as-fabricated T-TENG device was a combination of output signals from the PDMS/Ni@C tube and PDMS/contact object devices, which could fully reflect the stress field caused by the contact material pressing the surface and the surface characteristics, promoting the deep learning algorithm to be able to extract more hidden features of the identified materials. By integrating convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis based on the voltage signals of the T-TENG device, we explored a strategy that could enable the as-fabricated device to recognize 6 gestures with 99.3% recognition accuracy and 8 different materials with 99.8% recognition accuracy in the natural environment.

The development of high-performance polymer is crucial for the fabrication of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) used in extreme conditions. Liquid crystal polyarylate thermosets (LCTs) demonstrate great potential as triboelectric material by virtue of exceptional comprehensive properties. However, there are only a few specific end-groups like phenylethynyl matching the LCT polycondensation temperature (above 300 °C). Moreover, the excellent properties of LCTs rely on the crosslinked network formed with long curing time at high temperature, restricting their further application in triboelectric material. Herein, a fast-curing LCT is designed by terminating with 4-maleimidophenol possessing appropriate reactivity. The resultant LCT (MA-LC-MA) exhibits much lower polycondensation temperature (250–270 °C) and curing temperature of 300 °C within only 1 min compared to typical LCTs (cured at 370 °C for 1 h). Furthermore, the cured MA-LC-MA retains a high glass transition temperature of 135 °C, storage modulus of 6 MPa even at 350 °C, and great electrical output performance. Additionally, triboelectric measurement related to the dielectric properties that vary with crosslinked network is innovatively utilized as an analysis technique of curing progress. This work provides a new strategy to design high-performance TENGs and promotes the development of next generation thermosets in extreme conditions.

Triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator (HNG) with high output performance provides a very promising solution for realizing self-powered microelectronic devices. However, the complex structures and large mass of traditional HNGs make them difficult to prepare and carry. In this study, a rotating HNG based on flexible neodymium iron boron/ethyl cellulose (NdFeB/EC) composite films was designed for wind energy scavenging. A lightweight composite film with triboelectric and ferromagnetic properties, which can significantly reduce the weight of the rotor, was prepared to replace the magnet. Operated at a wind speed of 15.5 m/s, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) unit of the optimized HNG with an interdigitated electrode gap of 2 mm can generate an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) and a short-circuit current (I sc ) of 55 V and 5.4 μA, respectively. The maximum power of TENG is 99.2 μW under the condition of an external load resistance of 10 MΩ. The corresponding electromagnetic generator (EMG) unit can produce V oc and I sc of approximately 0.16 V and 59.3 μA, delivering an output power of 2.5 μW at a matched loading resistance of 2.3 kΩ. Compared to the individual TENG or EMG units, the HNG exhibited better charging performance. A 470 μF capacitor can charge to 3.4 V within 600 s, and the stored energy can successfully power a commercial soil temperature–humidity meter to work continuously for 75 s and light 30 blue LEDs in parallel. This research is of great scientific significance for developing triboelectric–ferromagnetic dual-functional materials and designing highly integrated and lightweight HNGs.

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) face challenges in achieving high performance and fulfilling functional requirement for special applications. This paper presents the development of a high-performance, thermally robust hierarchical polyimide (PI) nanofiber triboelectric yarns with a charge-trapping interlayer for application in firefighting E-textiles. The hierarchical nanofiber yarns, comprising a stainless-steel core electrode, a PI/MXene interlayer and PI outer tribo-layer, exhibit enhanced triboelectric performance due to the charge-trapping capabilities of MXene, which preventing the recombination of triboelectric and induced charges. When the MXene content in the charge-trapping interlayer reached 1 wt%, the corresponding TENG achieved its optimal output performance, with an output voltage of 153 V and a current of 13.13 μA and a peak power density of 0.84 W/m 2 under optimal conditions. It also demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, maintaining stable output at temperatures up to 400 °C. The integration of the TENG into E-textiles enables real-time monitoring of firefighters’ physical activities and location tracking, significantly enhancing their safety and operational efficiency in fire scenarios. Additionally, the TENG powers electroluminescent yarns, improving visibility in dense smoke and dust environments. This research opens new avenues for the application of smart wearable systems in high-temperature environments, providing effective strategies for ensuring the safety of firefighters in fire rescue operations.

Due to the increasing shortage of freshwater resources and energy, solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) technology has emerged as a key solution for utilizing solar energy to produce freshwater. However, certain volatile contaminants tend to evaporate along with water vapor and condense into the freshwater. This study combined contact-electro-catalysis (CEC) with photocatalysis using solar energy to enhance the degradation efficiency of pollutants. A FeOCl/TiO 2 /PVDF membrane based on photocatalysis and CEC is designed to evaluate the catalytic degradation performance using crystal violet (CV) as a model contaminant. The membrane exhibited a degradation rate of ≈95% for CV within 36 min. The degradation mechanism is further verified by intermediate identification, quenching experiments, and free radical detection. Under visible light, the CV degradation is driven by reactive radicals, such as hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical, which generated through dual electron transfer processes (from water molecules and FeOCl/TiO 2 to PVDF). Additionally, the application of the droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is proposed with the FeOCl/TiO 2 /PVDF membrane in SDIE system to remove phenol in seawater desalination. This study expanded the applications of TENGs and provided strategy to solve the problem of pollutant accumulation in solar-driven seawater desalination systems.

The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is an emerging technology that offers excellent potential for the conversion of mechanical energy from rain into electricity for hybrid energy applications. However, a high-performance TENG is yet to be achieved because a quantitative analysis method for the energy conversion process is still lacking. Herein, a quantitative analysis method, termed the "kinetic energy calculation and current integration" (KECCI) method, which significantly improves the understanding of the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion process, is presented. Based on the KECCI method, a high-performance TENG is developed by systematically optimizing a biomimetic surface structure and instant switch design, with 1.25 mA short-circuit current ( I sc ), 150 V open-circuit voltage ( V oc ), and a high energy-conversion efficiency of 24.89%. Furthermore, a multilayered TENG device is proposed for continuously harvesting the kinetic energy of raindrops for further improvement in the energy-conversion efficiency. Finally, the multilayered TENGs are integrated with organic photovoltaics, achieving all-weather energy harvesting. This work presents a validated theoretical basis that will guide further development of TENGs toward higher performances, which will promote the commercialization of hybrid TENG systems for all-weather applications.

Using supramolecular chemistry to develop ionogels that can restore their mechanical performance and functionality is of great interest for flexible electronic applications. In particular, self-healing ionogels with high strength and compression resistance are highly attractive for the fabrication of self-healing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as the power supply for next-generation electronics. Herein, ZnO nanoparticle-reinforced poly(acrylic acid)-based self-healing ionogels are synthesized with high mechanical strength, compression resistance, transparency, good ionic conductivity , and a wide operating temperature range. By sandwiching the self-healing ionogel between 3 M tape, a self-healing ionogel-based TENG (SI-TENG) with a high output power density of 3.15 W m −2 is obtained. Due to the excellent mechanical robustness and environmental stability of the self-healing ionogel, the SI-TENG exhibits a reliable electrical output performance in the range of − 30–80 °C after being folded, twisted, stretched, and trampled. Thus, the SI-TENG can be used to harvest energy from human motions such as tapping , walking, and running. After mechanical damage, the SI-TENG can be healed at room temperature to completely restore its electrical output performance, ensuring its longevity and reliability.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) depends on the effect of contact electrification to harvest mechanical energy. However, heat generation is unavoidable during the tribo-motions. Temperature increase may not only affect the output performance of TENG, but also bring potential harm to the operators. Hence, a thermochromic triboelectric nanogenerator (TC-TENG), which can directly visualize temperature changes, is designed based on a combination of thermochromic ionic liquid (TIL) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This thermochromic polyvinylidene fluoride (TC-PVDF) film can change its color from white to light green at around 60 ℃, while it can also maintain good electrification performance for TENG. The triboelectric series of this TC-PVDF shifts to more positive position in comparison with common PVDF, which is possibly due to the contribution from TIL during the electrification. The TC-TENG with an effective contact area of 3 cm × 5 cm can provide a maximum output power density of 125 mW m −2 at a matching resistance of 330 MΩ and it shows excellent stability with various humidity and different air pressures. The proposed TC-TENG with self-alarming capability can further promote the study of intelligent TENG and fully automatic self-powered systems.

Developing new routes to improve the output performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is an ongoing pursuit for practical applications. Herein, we report a sequential protocol for fabricating a high-performance triboelectric nanogenerator based on cellulose fibers (CF-TENG). High-speed shearing makes the plant fiber fibrillate, resembling a cocklebur seed, which is beneficial for cellulose to expose more hydroxyl groups and silver nanoparticles to grow on the surface of cellulose fibers. The cocklebur-structured fiber design also endows AgNP-modified cellulose fiber sheets (Ag@CF-sheets) with a larger surface area. Moreover, the elevated fiber-fiber compactness of the Ag@CF-sheets is advantageous for the enhancement of the effective frictional area and reduction of the thickness. Hence, the triboelectric performance of Ag@CF-sheets was improved greatly. The proposed design gives the resultant fiber-based TENG outstanding output performance of an open voltage of 142.6 V and current of 31.2 μA. Furthermore, the CF-TENG displays fast response and high flexibility when used as a pressure sensor, serving as a highly sensitive sensor to human motion. This work not only develops an efficient method to fabricate a high-performance CF-TENG but also exhibits great potential of the CF-TENG in human motion monitoring applications.
