Microbial etch: A novel construction method of functionalized biochar for enhanced uranium extraction in radioactive wastewater

Yazhou Wang,Xudong Wu,Xiyang Liu,Chengkun Cai,Chenghu Liang,Lichun Dai,Xinsheng He,Rong He,Huanhuan Liu,Wenkun Zhu

Nuclear energy is playing an increasingly important role on the earth, but the nuclear plants leaves a legacy of radioactive waste pollution, especially uranium-containing pollution. Straw biochar with wide sources, large output, low cost, and easy availability, has emerged as a promising material for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater, but the natural biomass with suboptimal structure and low content of functional groups limits the efficiency. In this work, microbial etch was first came up to regulate the biochar's structure and function. The surface of the biochar becomes rougher and more microporous, and the mineral contents (Ca, P) indirectly increased by microbial etch. The biochar was modified by calcium phosphate and exhibited a remarkable uranium extraction capacity of 590.8 mg g − 1 (fitted value). This work provides a cost-effective and sustainable method for preparing functionalized biochar via microbial etch, which has potential for application to uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater.

Ultra-high mechanical property and multi-layer porous structure of amidoximation ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer balls for efficient and selective uranium adsorption from radioactive wastewater

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Qi Liu,Jiahui Zhu,Jingyuan Liu,Jing Yu,Rongrong Chen,Peili Liu,Jun Wang

Adsorption uranium [U(VI)] from U-containing radioactive wastewater (URW) is a critical strategy for solving the resource shortage and environmental pollution in pace with the sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, the URW universally exhibits acidity and contains co-existing metal ions with high concentration. Herein, the amidoximation ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer balls (EAA-AO) with aciduric and super-high mechanical property were successfully synthesized through grafting diaminomaleonitrile and further treatment of amidoximation. Significantly, the mechanical properties of EAA-AO were not affected by the grafting process and maintained super-high mechanical properties. Furthermore, the –NH 2 and unreacted –C N groups in diaminomaleonitrile adjusted the pK a to make the optimal pH be 4. In addition, the microstructure of EAA-AO was transformed from the original dense to multi-layer porous structure, which promoted the mass transfer process and the contact between uranyl ions (UO 2 2+ ) and internal adsorption active sites. The adsorption capacity of EAA-AO was about 1.78 times that of EAA at pH = 4, and the adsorption capacity for U(VI) was about 8.17 times that of Ba 2+ with the second highest adsorption capacity. Therefore, the EAA-AO exhibited ultra-high adsorption performance ( q e  = 3.196 mg g −1 ) in the artificial radioactive wastewater, laying a good foundation for subsequent large-scale industrial adsorption of U(VI) in nuclear industrial wastewater .

Epoxy graphene oxide from a simple photo-Fenton reaction and its hybrid with phytic acid for enhancing U(VI) capture

Hao Lei,Daohui Zhou,Jiao Tang,Xiaoping Hu,Ning Pan,Hao Zou,Fangting Chi,Xiaoqiang Wang

A novel approach to synthesize phytic acid (PA) functionalized graphene oxide (P-pFGO-7) treated by the photo-Fenton reaction has been designed, which has been used as an adsorbent for efficient capture of U(VI) from aqueous solution. The structure and morphology of P-pFGO-7 were characterized well. The adsorption property for P-pFGO-7 was comprehensively assessed by batch experiments, showing the high adsorption capacity (266.7 mg/g, at pH = 4.0, T  = 298 K), fast adsorption kinetics (~10 min), good selectivity for U(VI) and Ln-An ions in various coexisting ions and excellent regeneration capacity. With the assistance of various characterization techniques and batch adsorption results, it is found that PA makes the most contribution to coordinate U(VI) heavily depending on the P O moiety. P-pFGO-7 could be regenerated by 0.1 mol/L Na 2 CO 3 with ~95% desorption efficiency and reused well after five recycles. This present work provides a feasible route to modify graphene oxide and extend PA for potentially practical application in the removal of U(VI) from radioactive wastewater .

Optimization of slaughter sludge-derived biochar via response surface methodology and backpropagation neural network for efficient uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater

Xinyu Zhao,Yanjie Lv,Lijie Chen,Le Li,Xin Zhang,Zhongran Dai

Biochar materials are emerging as promising candidates for treating uranium-containing wastewater. In this study, the response surface methodology (RSM) and backpropagation (BP) neural network model were employed to optimize the processing parameters during the preparation of biochar via sludge aerobic fermentation products (SAPBC), thereby maximizing its potential in addressing the challenges associated with uranium-contaminated wastewater. Through systematic parameter optimization, the optimal pyrolysis conditions were determined as: pyrolysis temperature 382 °C, heating rate 5 °C/min, and holding time 2 h. Results obtained from batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity of SAPBC-382 for U(VI) was 159.27 mg/g under a pH condition of 4.0. Kinetic analysis revealed the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics ( R 2  = 0.992), while isotherm data best fitted the Langmuir model ( R 2  = 0.997), indicating monolayer chemisorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Notably, the SAPBC maintained >90 % removal efficiency through five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating exceptional recyclability. Mechanism study reveals that the effective adsorption of U(VI) by SAPBC primarily stems from electrostatic attraction as well as the coordination of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups. Overall, this research adheres to the principle of waste control by waste not only provides an efficient solution for uranium-containing wastewater treatment but also establishes a sustainable approach for sludge valorization in environmental remediation applications.

Immobilization of ZIF-8 into biomass aerogel for uranium enrichment from radioactive wastewater

Huanhuan Dong,Xudong Wu,Lei Li,Ruixiang Wang,Qingqing Liu,Yihao Wang,Xun Yang,Mao Hu,Tao Chen

Advances in nuclear energy have led to steady accumulation of radioactive uranium wastewater, requiring the worldwide implementation of safe and efficient disposal methods. Adsorption has become a viable solution for purifying uranium-contaminated wastewater and recovering uranium resources due to its efficiency, environmental compatibility, and simplicity. This study utilized konjac glucomannan’s (KGM) gel properties to create a ZIF-8@KGM aerogel. Liquid nitrogen-induced rapid directional freezing combined with KGM’s exceptional plasticity yielded an aerogel with a uniform layered structure and directional channels. ZIF-8 (2-Methylimidazolezincsalt) particles are dispersed uniformly within the aerogel pores, significantly improving adsorption site accessibility. Compared with ZIF-8, the [email protected] aerogel achieved improved kinetics and adsorption capacity for uranium separation. After 90 min in a 200 mg/L acidic U(VI) solution, it achieved 96.4 % removal efficiency and a maximum capacity of 687.8 mg/g. Mechanistic studies revealed synergistic adsorption: KGM’s oxygen-containing functional groups coordinated with uranyl ions, together with the nitrogen-containing groups and hydroxyl Zn(Ⅱ) sites on ZIF-8 particles. Overall, this approach provides a promising strategy for uranium wastewater remediation that exhibits broader applicability in water treatment.

Comparison of adsorption of U(VI) by magnetic MCM-41, MCM-48 and SBA-15 mesoporous silicas

Bi Dongxu,Cai Weiqian,Xiong Lingshan,Luo Qie,Wang Youqun,Zhang Zhibin,Xu Lin,Cao Xiaohong,Liu Yunhai

Three types of magnetic mesoporous silicas (MMSs), namely, MMCM-41, MMCM-48 and MSBA-15 were prepared by a hydrothermal method using CTAB and P123 as templates. The structure and physicochemical properties of MMSs were characterized by small angle XRD, VSM, ζ potential analyzer, contact angle measurer, and XPS, etc. The potential applications of MMSs in U(VI) recovery were thoroughly investigated. The adsorptive kinetics, thermodynamics, and selectivity of MMCM-41, MMCM-48 and MSBA-15 were compared. The results show that MSBA-15 revealed a high capacity for U(VI) (341.94 mg·g −1 ) and a superior selectivity than MMCM-41 and MMCM-48. The adsorption mechanism was explored by using the relevant adsorption models and XPS. The results indicated that MSBA-15 could be considered a strong candidate for the adsorption and recovery of U(VI) from radioactive wastewater.

Photothermal-enhanced adsorption system based on ZIF-67-derived CoS2/MoS2 and MXene-functionalized biomass carbon aerogel for efficient removal of strontium and cesium from aqueous matrices

Na Yang,Xu Guo,Jing Yu,Hongsen Zhang,Rumin Li,Lele Wang,Qi Liu,Jun Wang

The effective removal of radioactive Sr 2+ and Cs + ions from wastewater is crucial for environmental remediation. Herein, a novel solar-enhanced adsorption platform based on a CoS 2 /MoS 2 /P-MXene/C composite aerogel has been developed that can efficiently remove Sr 2+ and Cs + ions. The constructed CoS 2 /MoS 2 heterointerface provides abundant active regions, while the hierarchical porous structure of the aerogel promotes the rapid transfer of ions and water molecules. In particular, the superior photothermal conversion ability of the CoS 2 /MoS 2 /P-MXene/C makes it capable of capturing solar energy for local heating effect, thereby increasing ion diffusion and accelerating mass transfer. This photothermal feature can greatly enhance the adsorption kinetics through the evaporation of the solution and the ion concentration at adsorption sites. The equilibrium of both Sr 2+ and Cs + was reached within 1 h under one-sun illumination. The measured maximum adsorption capacities were 98.7 and 150.6 mg/g for Sr 2+ and Cs + ions, respectively. In addition, it has excellent selectivity and recyclability as well as high performance in high-salinity solution. The CoS 2 /MoS 2 /P-MXene/C also shows promising potential in the fields of solar-driven seawater desalination and purification of wastewater containing dyes due to the multi-functionality. This work not only engineers an efficient adsorbent for treating nuclear wastewater, but also presents a generic design strategy for multifunctional adsorption system enhanced by external fields for environmental applications.

Recyclable UiO-66-NH2@Chitosan/Loofah fiber composite for efficient strontium capture

Xiangtao Tang,Lihong Lu,Fang Yang,Xingyu Zhong,Hongfa Shi,Wenqing Zhang,Lingfan Zhang

The treatment of radioactive wastewater containing 90 Sr required advanced adsorbents to address the limitations of the recyclable usage. In this study, a UiO-66-NH 2 @Chitosan/Loofah Fiber Composite (UNCL) was synthesized using an impregnation strategy, enabling easy separation from the solution and efficient Sr 2+ removal. By integrating the good adsorption activity of UiO-66-NH 2 , interfacial modification capability of chitosan, and macrostructural advantages of loofah fiber, the composite achieved enhanced mass transfer efficiency and structural stability. UNCL achieved adsorption equilibrium within 120 min, demonstrating rapid and efficient strontium capture capability. The material demonstrated robust performance under alkaline conditions, and retained high efficacy in real river water and seawater environments. Adsorption behavior aligned with the Sips isotherm model (R 2  = 0.999) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R 2  = 0.995) with maximum adsorption capacity of 7.64 mg/g, confirming monolayer chemisorption. Mechanistic investigations, supported by FT-IR and XPS analyses, revealed a synergistic mechanism involving ion exchange, surface complexation and electrostatic interactions at multiple active sites. UNCL maintained approximately 90 % removal efficiency after five adsorption–desorption cycles and enabled facile separation from aqueous solutions through simple mechanical retrieval. These results demonstrated that UNCL combined adsorption ability, reusability, and environmental adaptability, positioning it as a promising and practical solution for Sr 2+ remediation.

Self-Cleaning Electrospun Intercalated MXene/PAN Evaporator Enables Highly Efficient Photothermal Interfacial Evaporation-Assisted Radioactive Wastewater Treatment

Cailin Yang,Qiuyu Mei,Haipu Li,Zhian Wang,Hua Wan,Kai Han

We developed electrospun MXene/PAN nanofiber membranes (EMPs) for efficient photothermal interfacial evaporation (PIE) in radioactive wastewater treatment. Ti3C2Tx nanosheets were uniformly intercalated into the PAN matrix during electrospinning, improving membrane stability and durability. We used the CIE Lab color space to analyze the relationship between membrane color and solar absorption, and the EMP membrane showed a strong average light absorption of 92.7%. A two-dimensional (2D) water transport structure was employed to improve water supply during evaporation. As a result, the EMP evaporator reached a high evaporation rate of 1.96 kg·m–2·h–1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 91.34%. The membranes also exhibited excellent nuclide rejection of I–, Cs+, Sr2+, and Co2+ and showed a self-cleaning effect as surface salts redissolved during dark periods. This work highlights the potential of combining material design and water management for solar-driven radioactive wastewater purification.

Efficient radiocobalt removal from seawater and radioactive liquid waste using a radiation-stable layered metal sulfide ion exchanger

Fei Han,Aocheng Yuan,Zhi Zhang,Qingquan Deng,Jiaoting Li,Shuibo Wu,Mingdong Zhang,Jingli Mu

Radiocobalt (e.g., 58 Co and 60 Co), a critical neutron-activated corrosion product in the nuclear industry, poses great challenges due to high toxicity. Effective removal of radioactive Co 2+ from complex environments is significantly urgent. Metal sulfide ion exchangers (MSIEs) are promising adsorbents; however, limited research has focused on Co 2+ removal, especially from seawater and real-world radioactive waste. Herein, a layered K 2 Cu 2 Sn 2 S 6 (CTS-1) was reported for the efficient capture of Co 2+ . The charge-balancing K + ions are exchangeable, endowing CTS-1 with Co 2+ capture ability via an ion exchange mechanism. This mechanism leads to the releasing K + into solution and concurrently immobilizing Co 2+ , which was confirmed macroscopically and microscopically. CTS-1 exhibited Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of 33.96 and 20.72 mg/g in deionized water and seawater at 25 °C, respectively; the overall adsorption kinetics were similar in both matrices. CTS-1 displayed excellent pH durability with >99 % removal of Co 2+ at pH 4–8 and high selectivity for Co 2+ in various natural matrices. Impressively, in seawater ( C 0 Co  = 5 mg/L), CTS-1 achieved 97.38 % of Co 2+ removal with a distribution coefficient ( K d ) up to 3.817 × 10 4  mL/g, surpassing many existing adsorbents. Furthermore, CTS-1 exhibited radiation resistance; its structure and adsorption performance remained largely unchanged after a gamma radiation dose of 200 kGy. CTS-1 demonstrated the ability to remove nearly 99 % of radiocobalt from real-world radioactive wastewater, while also showing removal efficiency for other radionuclides like 51 Cr and 58 Mn. Overall, this work provides a highly promising material to tackle radiocobalt contamination in radioactive waste, greatly promoting environmental protection and safety for the radioactive industry.

Promoting Co(II)–EDTA decomplexation by central atom oxidation in contact-electro-catalysis

Zhenyi Chen,Shuo Li,Kun Feng,Zhen Wen,Jun Zhong

Low-level radioactive wastewater containing Co(II)–EDTA generated in the nuclear industry is harmful to the environment, but it is difficult to remove owing to the high stability of metal–organic complexes. Here, we report efficient contact-electro-catalysis (CEC) to achieve the decomplexation of Co(II)–EDTA by using commercial fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) powder as a dielectric catalyst. The reaction generated reactive oxygen species through solid–liquid interfacial charge transfer, disrupting the chemical bonds and then oxidizing the central atoms in Co(II)–EDTA to form Co(III)–EDTA with vacancies. The Co(III)–EDTA could be easily removed from the solution under alkaline conditions. The decomplexation efficiency reached a high value of 41.6%, with a constant reaction rate of 0.024 min−1 in 240 minutes. The FEP also exhibited excellent recyclability over 40 h without obvious changes. Unlike conventional advanced oxidation processes, this approach does not require the use of electrodes or chemical oxidants, leading to low energy consumption. This approach also holds great potential for green wastewater management via integration with ambient mechanical energy sources (e.g., wind and hydrostatic pressure).
