Coordination Reconstruction of Fe Single Atoms by Encapsulated Nickel Nanoparticles for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction

Haixin Sun,Xupeng Qin,Yuhao Zhang,Yanzhi Xu,Yaling Jiang,Fengwen Pan,Qinghua Liu

Coordination reconstruction of atomically dispersed active sites in electrocatalytic reactions is expected to enhance the catalytic activity, but achieving this goal remains challenging. Herein, a single-atom‒nanoparticle synergistic catalyst composed of pyridine Fe─N sites and Ni nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes is presented, in which the Ni NPs can reconstruct the Fe─N─C coordination structure from Fe─N 4 to Fe─N 2 through the carbon nanotube structure during the CO 2 electroreduction reaction. The catalyst exhibites a low onset potential of −0.12 V in an alkaline flow cell, with a high Faradaic efficiency for CO (FE CO ) greater than 97% over a wide potential range of −0.4–−1.2 V and a maximum FE CO of 98.7%. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and infrared characterization results demonstrate that the reduction in the Fe─N coordination number during the reaction process promotes the protonation of CO 2 to form the * COOH intermediate and thereby significantly improves the CO 2 electroreduction performance.

Curvature-dependent activity of CO2 electrocatalytic reduction on NCNT@Ni

Xinling Zhang,Yongxiao Tuo,Qing Lu,Yuanyuan Liu,Jiabing Luo,Hui Zhang,Jingyuan Shang,Yan Zhou,Jun Zhang

The impact of carbon material curvature is often underestimated in studies of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). To clarify its role, we tuned the diameter of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) by controlling the size of embedded Ni nanoparticles (50 to 120 nm), in which the Ni-modified C-N species has been identified as an efficient site for CO 2 RR to CO. We found that the FE CO and TOF increase with the curvature of NCNT, particularly in the high potential window that is the diffusion-limited region. This enhancement is attributed to accelerated CO desorption since the electrophobic nature of high-curvature C-N defects reduces hybridization between *CO and active sites. These insights highlight curvature engineering as a promising strategy to enhance CO current density in carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Bamboo-shaped Co@NCNTs as superior sulfur host for Li-S batteries

Cai Qi,Shu Zu,Xukun Zhu,Tong Zhang,Longyan Li,Li Song,Yachao Jin,Mingdao Zhang

Functional and active carbon material is of great concern in facilitating the performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery . In this work, we develop a bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@NCNTs-2) with low cobalt metal content, which acts as not only the host matrix for sulfur loading but also an efficient catalyst for the adsorption and conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). The characterization results show that the Co particles are mainly encapsulated inside the Co@NCNTs-2, and the N species are mainly distributed on the outer surface of Co@NCNTs-2. The Co particles are the growth sites of carbon nanotubes and are wrapped by carbon to form Co@NCNTs-2. It is confirmed that the uniform graphitized structure contributes to charge transfer, while the enriched N species assist the trap and catalytic conversion of the polysulfides, thus helping to restrain the shuttle effect. As a result, the resultant Co@NCNTs-2-S cathode presents high reversible capacity at different current densities and exhibits superior cycling stability for 300 cycles at 0.5 C.

All-in-One Sulfur Host: Smart Controls of Architecture and Composition for Accelerated Liquid–Solid Redox Conversion in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Bin Qin,Yifei Cai,Xiaoqing Si,Chun Li,Jian Cao,Weidong Fei,Haijiao Xie,Junlei Qi

The development of Li–S batteries (LSBs) is largely impeded by sluggish redox kinetics and notorious polysulfide shuttling. Herein, hierarchical MoC@Ni–NCNT arrays are reported as a multifunctional sulfur host in Li–S batteries, which comprised a flexible carbon fiber cloth substrate decorated with vertical MoC porous nanorods rooted by interconnected nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs). In the designed host, the inner MoC porous backbone (composed of nanoparticles) along with the in situ-grafted interwoven NCNT shell can greatly maximize the host–guest interactive surface for homogeneous sulfur dispersion, thus realizing decent high-sulfur-loading performance. Ni nanoparticles, encapsulated within NCNTs in the outer shell, act as strong chemical-anchoring centers effectively trap-escaped polysulfides and propel the bidirectional sulfur transformation kinetics. In merit of sufficient adsorption and catalytic sites, the cell configured with the MoC@Ni–NCNT cathode delivers not only high capacity (1421 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C) but also superior rate performance and ultralong lifespan. The cell can still achieve a superb areal capacity of 6.1 mA h cm2 under an increased sulfur loading up to 6 mg cm–2. This work could open a new avenue for the construction of a multifunctional cathode for high-performance LSBs.

High performance of filter capacitor based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube supercapacitor

Dazhi Zhang,Yuzhu Guan,Peiyuan Ji,Shiquan Lin,Xueli Zheng,Xianjie Pu,Wenlin Liu,Renyu Yang,Chenguo Hu,Yi Xi

The high-performance filter capacitor is a hot research topic in the field of filter circuits for flexible and wearable devices, whereas traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors still experience widespread problems in terms of large error factors and poor stability. To avoid these disadvantages, in this work, we have developed a liquid dual-layer supercapacitor (SC). When it is employed as the filter capacitor in a filter circuit, any waveform signal can be transformed into a linear signal. The maximum fluctuation of the output signal is less than 16 mV; the SC also demonstrates excellent filtering stability in a frequency range of 1 ∼ 100 000 Hz, as well as an amplitude window of 0 ∼ 10 V. In this framework, our filter SC demonstrates unparalleled processing properties, and can greatly improve the stability and extend the lifetime of the entire electronic circuit. The fact that the requirements of high-end electronic products can be fulfilled due to the contribution of this filter SC are particularly significant.

Laser patterned and bifunctional Ni@N-doped carbon nanotubes as electrocatalyst and photothermal conversion layer for water splitting driven by thermoelectric device

Haifeng Yuan,Fan Liu,Guobin Xue,Hui Liu,Yijie Wang,Yiwei Zhao,Xiaoyan Liu,Xiaoli Zhang,Lili Zhao,Zhen Liu,Hong Liu,Weijia Zhou

For efficient conversion from solar energy to hydrogen energy, the integrated system between light absorbing unit and water splitting unit is in the spotlight. Herein, we presented a bifunctional Ni@NCNTs/NF-L as both photothermal conversion layer integrated with thermoelectric generator (TE) and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst to reducing the potential, realizing the integration system for overall water splitting. The Ni nanoparticles embedded into N -doped carbon nanotubes (Ni@NCNTs/NF-L) with various patterns are prepared by controllable laser processing and gas-solid calcination reaction. Furthermore, iron nickel oxides nanoparticles on NiFe alloys foil (NiFe-L) are obtained by laser ablation, which are applied for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode to establish two electrode electrolyzer of (−) Ni@NCNTs/NF-L/TE // NiFe-L (+) for overall water splitting. Integrating with one TE, the voltage of water splitting at the current-density of 50 mA cm −2 reduced from 1.947 V to 1.213 V under the standard AM 1.5 G illumination. The integrated thermoelectric device plays a doubtless role to realize solar energy driving overall water splitting with integration and patterning fabrication in large-scale.

Freeze-drying synthesis of three-dimensional porous LiFePO4 modified with well-dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Xiaofeng Tu,Yingke Zhou,Yijie Song

The three-dimensional porous LiFePO 4 modified with uniformly dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes has been successfully prepared by a freeze-drying method. The morphology and structure of the porous composites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the electrochemical performances are evaluated using the constant current charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes are uniformly dispersed inside the porous LiFePO 4 to construct a superior three-dimensional conductive network, which remarkably increases the electronic conductivity and accelerates the diffusion of lithium ion. The porous composite displays high specific capacity, good rate capability and excellent cycling stability, rendering it a promising positive electrode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Cu nanoclusters on N-doped carbon nanotubes as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Yifan Song,Tianyu Zhang,Guangda Zhou,Peizhi Liu,Xiaoli Yan,Bingshe Xu,Junjie Guo

Earth-rich transition metal-based catalysts are considered to be the most promising candidates to alternate noble metal-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nevertheless, the practical applications have been hampered due to their poor electrocatalytic behaviors and stability. Here, we report the facial thesis of Cu nanoclusters supported on N-doped carbon nanotubes by a simple grinding and heat treatment method, which presented a superior electrocatalytic performance than commercial Pt/C. In alkaline media, an onset potential (E 0 ) and half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.98 V and 0.88 V (RHE) have been achieved, respectively. In addition, the synthesized catalysts present a good tolerance and long-term stability to methanol, and exhibit less than 7% H 2 O 2 formation. It is inferred that the enhanced electrocatalytic behavior could be attributed to the formation of Cu-N X active sites, which are coupled into the nitrogen-rich carbon nanotubes. This low-cost, extremely durable and stable electrocatalyst showed a great potential as an efficient cathode material for a variety of renewable energy conversion technologies, such as fuel cells and metal-air cells.

Catalytic upcycling of waste polypropylene for gram-scale production of FeCo@N-doped carbon nanotubes toward efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Ru Hong,Qingyu Liu,Qi Cao,Jiahuan Xu,Rui Xiao,Huiyan Zhang

Exploring novel low-cost and high-efficiency non-precious metal catalysts for use in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) is of key importance. Based on catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics, a facile method for preparing N-doped Fe/Co-encapsulated carbon nanotubes (Fe x Co y @NCNTs) was proposed. Particularly, gram-scale yield of the composite catalyst (3.87 g) was achieved in one pot with considerable atomic conversion rate of carbon (∼57.3 %) from waste polypropylene to high-quality CNTs, suggesting great potential for waste plastics valorization. The effects of Fe-to-Co ratios were studied by testing the ORR performance of each sample, indicating that as the Fe proportion increased, the ORR performance initially increased and then decreased. The Fe1Co1@NCNTs catalyst showed optimal performance which was comparable with commercial Pt/C catalyst: Particularly, an initial potential of 0.97 V vs RHE, a half-wave potential of 0.81 V vs RHE, and a limiting current density of –5.68 mA cm −2 were recorded. The encapsulated Fe and Co species in N-doped CNTs enhanced catalytic activity, while the porous carbon structure augmented the exposure of active sites. This strategy offers an auspicious platform for reusing waste plastics in the mass production of CNTs, and also provides an innovative approach for preparing low-cost, high-performance, and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for ORRs.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes decorated poly (L-Cysteine) as a novel, ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of theophylline and caffeine

Yingzi Wang,Yaping Ding,Li Li,Ping Hu

In present study, a novel and facile electrochemical sensor based on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNT) decorated with poly (L-Cysteine) (PLCY) were fabricated and applied for the simultaneous voltammetric determination of theophylline (THEO) and caffeine (CAF). The morphology and structure of multilayer film modified on the surface of glassy carbon electrode were investigated successfully by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Raman Spectroscopy. And the properties of the modified electrode were investigated by Chronocoulometry (CC), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) were utilized to investigate the electrochemical behavior of THEO and CAF on the composite film modified electrode. The results showed that the determination towards THEO and CAF can be operated at the same potential window with the oxidation current peak separated and non-interfering respectively. Compared to the bare GCE, the PLCY/N-CNT/GCE can signally meliorate the electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of THEO and CAF with a remarkably increase in the anodic peak currents of 495.94% and 465.48%. Under the optimal conditions, the fabrication multilayer film sensor had excellent performances in determination towards THEO and CAF with a wide linear dynamic range from 0.10 to 70.0   μM and 0.40–140.0   μM, low detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.033   μM and 0.20   μM, respectively. The PLCY/N-CNT/GCE sensor also had advantages as easy-made, high-sensitivity, stability and reproducibility. Moreover, it was successfully used to analyze the THEO and CAF in green tee, oral theophylline sustained release tablets and energy drink sample with a satisfactory result.

Ultrathin CdS Nanosheets Grown on N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes with Encapsulated Cobalts for Highly Improved Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Production

Zhenghan Zhang,Yuanli Li,Hang Zhang,Jiaxing Zhong,Weiming Li,Chunlang Gao,Hui Zhang,Chunqiang Zhuang

Cocatalysts in photocatalytic systems play an important role in achieving efficient charge separation. These cocatalysts usually have a small size and are generally anchored onto main catalysts. They are taken as active centers to receive photogenerated electrons for water splitting. However, their high loading concentration usually leads to the degradation of water splitting. Here, we present a different strategy for the design of the main catalyst and cocatalyst. We used small-sized ultrathin cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanosheets as the main catalysts and anchored them onto large-sized N-doped carbon nanotubes with encapsulated cobalts. The photocatalytic hydrogen production of our optimized composite is ∼21.8 mmol/g, ∼3 times higher than that of pure CdS. Mechanism study shows that photoelectrons can be transferred from CdS to N-doped carbon nanotubes, thus achieving fast charge separation and efficient hydrogen production.
