Effect of self-assembled tetraaniline nanofiber on the anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coating

Tong Liu,Jingyu Li,Xiangyu Li,Shihui Qiu,Yuwei Ye,Feng Yang,Haichao Zhao

This work discusses the addition of tetraaniline based conducting nanofiber (TANF) on the anticorrosive properties of waterborne epoxy coatings on Q235 mild steel. TANF was synthesized by self-assembly of tetraaniline in 1 M HCl solution. The structure of TANF was characterized by the Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, UV–vis spectra and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the morphology of TANF was used to investigate by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and scanning probe microscope (SPM). The self-assembled TANF possesses excellent solubility, tiny nanofibrous structure and reversible redox behavior, making it appropriate as a novel anticorrosive pigment for the waterborne coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS), polarizing curves and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) were used to investigated the effect of TANF on the anticorrosion performance of epoxy coating. The results revealed that the waterborne epoxy coating containing 0.5 wt% TANF exhibited improved corrosion resistance properties compared to pure waterborne epoxy coating. The addition of electroactive TANI could facilitate to form a passive metal oxide layer beneath the coating as proved by characterization of rust layers by X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Polyphenol-reduced graphene oxide toward high-performance corrosion inhibitor

Jinpeng Yu,Han Yan,Mingsi Yang,Yuetao Ma,Xiaoqiang Fan,Minhao Zhu

Graphene as a physical barrier in organic coating exhibits good anticorrosion property, whereas its agglomeration would greatly debase such performance. Here, functionalized graphene was prepared via a green/facile method with tea polyphenol as reductant and graphene oxide (GO) as precursor. The anticorrosion performance of polyphenol-reduced graphene oxide (T-rGO) in waterborne epoxy coating was evaluated according to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization curve, water absorption and salt spray test. Results indicate that the T-rGO/epoxy coating has the largest impedance modulus and corrosion potential, and the corrosion current density is an order of magnitude lower than that of pure epoxy coating. The T-rGO/epoxy coating displays excellent corrosion protection under continuous high salt spray environment, with pure epoxy coating as a comparison. T-rGO greatly enhances the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coating, which is attributed to its good dispersibility and intrinsic characteristics.

Corrosion protection performance of waterborne epoxy coatings containing self-doped polyaniline nanofiber

Shihui Qiu,Cheng Chen,Mingjun Cui,Wei Li,Haichao Zhao,Liping Wang

Self-doped sulfonated polyaniline (SPANi) nanofiber was synthesized by the copolymerization of 2-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (ASA) and aniline via a rapid mixing polymerization approach. The chemical structure of SPANi was investigated by the Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The as-prepared SPANi nanofibers had 45   nm average diameter and length up to 750   nm as measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The self-doped SPANi nanofiber possessed excellent aqueous solubility, good conductivity (0.11   S/cm) and reversible redox activity, making it suitable as a corrosion inhibitor for waterborne coatings. The prepared SPANi/waterborne epoxy composite coatings exhibited remarkably improved corrosion protection compared with pure waterborne epoxy coating as proved by the polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The passivation effect of SPANi nanofiber and the corrosion products beneath the epoxy coatings immersed in 3.5% NaCl solution as a function of time were also investigated in this study.

Tannic acid-copper metal-organic frameworks decorated graphene oxide for reinforcement of the corrosion protection of waterborne epoxy coatings

Li Cheng,Peimin Hou,Chengbao Liu

Waterborne anticorrosion coatings have aroused tremendous attention in the metal protection field due to their environmentally friendly properties. However, the limited barrier performance and poor resistance to corrosive species severely impede its practical applications. Herein, tannic acid-copper metal-organic framework (TA-Cu) was first synthesized via oxidative coordination and then assembled with graphene oxide to obtain TA-Cu-decorated graphene oxide (TAG), which was utilized to improve the anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy (WEP) coatings. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the impermeability of WEP has been significantly enhanced with the incorporation of TAG. Meanwhile, local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests indicated that the corrosion reaction at defected region can be effectively suppressed, presenting an active anticorrosion function. The protection mechanisms are attributed to (1) TA-Cu contributed to the dispersion of graphene oxide in WEP and impeded the intrusion of aggressive ions and (2) the coordination and adsorption of TA on steel inhibited the redox process and corrosion extension.

Interfacial assembled mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles reduced graphene oxide for high performance of waterborne epoxy-based anticorrosive coatings

Li Cheng,Chengbao Liu,Hao Wu,Haichao Zhao,Liping Wang

Embedding two-dimension micro/nanocontainers containing corrosion inhibitors into organic coating is a well-established concept to impart the coating with enhanced barrier and self-healing feature. Herein, a versatile nanoemulsion assembly approach was used to synthesis nanocarriers combing mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (MPDA) with reduced graphene oxide (GO), which was employed to encapsulate corrosion inhibitors (benzotriazole, BTA) to improve the anticorrosion performance of waterborne epoxy coating. The BTA release profiles from synthesized GO with MPDA (PDAG) demonstrated the rapid pH-triggered activities to acidic corrosion environment. With the addition of BTA-loaded PDAG, the composited epoxy coatings presented self-repairing behavior and enhanced corrosion resistance during long-term immersion. The outstanding anticorrosion performance is attributed to dual-protection mechanism provided by BTA-loaded PDAG: (1) MPDA endows GO with satisfactory interface compatibilities and thus provides impermeable barrier to delay the penetration process of corrosive electrolyte; (2) corrosion inhibitors including BTA and polydopamine form the adsorption layers on bare steel surface to resist continuous corrosion at metal/coating interface.

Waterborne epoxy coating with excellent barrier and self-healing properties for long-term corrosion protection

Tao He,Qing Yuan,Hongjie Li,Peng Xie,Changhua Li,Yi He,Yuanhua Lin

Herein, an intelligent anticorrosive coating with superior barrier and self-healing properties was prepared. Molybdate (MoO 4 2− ) intercalated layered double hydroxide (MIH) was synthesised and polydopamine (PDA) shell was grown on MIH surface to prepare MIH@PDA (PMIH) material. PMIH was assembled on graphene (Gr) sheet through π–π interaction to obtain the Gr@PMIH composite. The anticorrosive coating was prepared by incorporating Gr@PMIH into the epoxy resin. The PMIH material demonstrated a stimulus-response capacity due to the solubility of polydopamine in acidic conditions. In addition, the ion-exchange properties of the layered double hydroxide (LDH) facilitated the release of the encapsulated molybdate corrosion inhibitor between LDH layers and the adsorption of chloride ions. This mechanism was corroborated by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy results. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that the incorporation of MIH and Gr@PMIH materials considerably enhanced the low-frequency (0.01 Hz) impedance modulus. Among the tested ratios, Gr@PMIH/waterborne epoxy coatings (WECs) (3:7) exhibited the most effectively long-term corrosion protection. EIS measurements of the scratched coatings confirm the superior corrosion resistance and inhibition properties of Gr@PMIH/WECs (3:7). Furthermore, after 400 h of salt spray testing, substrates coated with Gr@PMIH/WECs (3:7) showed the least amount of corrosion products and blisters around surface scratches, affirming its exceptional long-term corrosion protection performance. Thus, the excellent barrier and stimuli-responsive characteristics of the Gr@PMIH material endowed the coating with enhanced long-term corrosion resistance and intelligent protection capabilities.

Ammonium-grafted graphene oxide for enhanced corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coatings

Yuqin Tian,Yuhui Xie,Fei Dai,Haowei Huang,Li Zhong,Xinya Zhang

This study reports an eco-friendly waterborne epoxy (WBE) coating with excellent corrosion resistance by adding ammonium grafted graphene oxide (AGO) as co-dispersant. AGO, as a co-dispersant, addresses the problem of a lot of micro-defects caused by the intrinsic mismatch between epoxy resin and amine curing agents during the formation of aqueous epoxy resin. Also, the compatibility of GO in the epoxy resin matrix is also improved by the ammonium modification. The ammonium modification process was systematically studied using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, UV–vis spectra, Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that AGO sheets has successfully inhibited the formation of micro-pores and micro-defects, forming a more compact WBE/AGO composite coating . As a result, the corrosion resistance of the coating has been greatly improved as investigated by the potentiodynamic polarization test. The corrosion rate of WBE/AGO is decreased by three orders of magnitude compared to pure WBE coating. The corrosion protection mechanism of the WBE/AGO coating is studied via Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test, and equivalent electrical circuits are applied to fitting the EIS results and reveal the effect of AGO in the composite coating.

Eco-friendly design of α-zirconium phosphate modified by phytic acid for reinforcing the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coating

Yang Zhao,Yi He,Siming Yan,Changhua Li,Hongjie Li,Wen Chen,Jing Yan,Guiyang Wu,Xi Yuan

Owing to the increasingly stringent environmental regulations, eco-friendly waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating currently gets much attention as an alternative choice of traditional coating. But the intrinsic problems of WEP, including poor barrier property and lack of long-term anticorrosion performance, was a limitation for its application. Herein, α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) was prepared and exfoliated under mild condition. Then α-ZrP after exfoliation was functionalized by eco-friendly phytic acid (PA) molecular and a novel nano-filler (PZ) was obtained. The test results of the XRD , FTIR, SEM, TEM and XPS indicated that the preparation of nano-materials was successful. Through the EIS test, the outstanding barrier property of WEP incorporating with PZ was proved. Moreover, the excellent long-term anticorrosion performance of WEP incorporating with PZ was also proved by the salt spray test .

Self-assembled graphene oxide-graphene hybrids for enhancing the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy coating

Fei Zhong,Yi He,Pingquan Wang,Chunlin Chen,Yan Lin,Youqing Wu,Jingyu Chen

Graphene (Gr), with robust barrier properties against corrosion ions, holds great potential application in waterborne epoxy coating for corrosion resistance , but hard to be realized for its intrinsic hydrophobicity . In comparison, graphene oxide (GO), with oxygen-containing functional groups on its surface, can be well dispersed in water but suffer the modest barrier properties for its defect can't effectively resist the permeability of corrosion ions. Herein, GO-Gr hybrids have been used in waterborne epoxy coating to overcome their shortcomings and enhance their advantages via the π-π interactions. The structure and morphology of the GO-Gr hybrids were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectra , UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the corrosion resistances of pure epoxy coating, GO/epoxy, and GO-Gr/epoxy were evaluated via electrochemical experiment and salt spray test. The results revealed that the GO-Gr/epoxy exhibited the highest corrosion resistance among these coatings owning to the synergistic effect of GO and Gr.

Synthesis of dicarboxylic acid compound structurally analogous to bisphenol A: for development of stable waterborne epoxy coatings

Mengtong Wang,Ying Miao,Rikun Liu,Liang Shen,Yingying Du,Changqing Fu

The use of bisphenol A (BPA) in traditional waterborne epoxy coating formulations is harmful to human health, and the low toughness of the cured film severely limits its application in many areas. Most BPA alternatives enhance the toughness of the epoxy cured film but compromise the coating's properties to varying degrees. Therefore, developing a BPA alternative that toughens epoxy resins without sacrificing modulus and mechanical strength remains a significant challenge. In this study, we synthesized dicarboxylic acid compound (PNP) with a structure similar to BPA, using phthalic anhydride and neopentyl glycol. This compound serves as a substitute for BPA. We systematically explored the influence of different PNP contents on the performance of waterborne epoxy resins and coatings. The results showed that PNP is more conducive to preparing waterborne epoxy resins with smaller particle sizes and stable heat storage. Compared with BPA-modified epoxy resin, PNP significantly increases the elongation at break and tensile strength of the cured film. Moreover, different PNP contents can significantly improve the coating's impact resistance, pull-off adhesion, water resistance, salt spray resistance, and acid resistance without affecting other mechanical properties and alkali resistance. This study provides a new perspective for preparing environmentally friendly, high-performance, tough, and stable waterborne epoxy coatings.

DL@Ti3C2Tx enhanced waterborne epoxy coating with superior active/passive anti-corrosion properties under 30 MPa hydrostatic pressure

Yangmin Wu,Changchun Zhao,Wenjie Zhao

It is challenging for organic coatings with solely physical barrier property to achieve long-term corrosion protection on metal equipment, especially in harsh deep sea environments. Here, we utilized DL-phenylalanine to modify Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets via noncovalent interaction to obtain DL@Ti 3 C 2 T x hybrid additives, which significantly improved the corrosion protection ability of epoxy coating (EP). The impedance modulus of DL@Ti 3 C 2 T x /EP composite coating with a thickness of 50 μm was two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure EP after 240 h immersion under 30 MPa hydrostatic pressure. The adhesion strength of DL@Ti 3 C 2 T x /EP composite coating remained at a favorable value of 1.84 MPa after long-term immersion in a harsh environment, which was twice as high as that of pure EP coating. In addition, the active corrosion resistance property of DL@Ti 3 C 2 T x /EP coating was investigated via the local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) measurement. The improved protection ability of DL@Ti 3 C 2 T x /EP was benefited from the synergistic effects of the superior physical barrier property of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and the self-healing feature provided by DL molecules. The corrosion protection and failure mechanisms of composite coating were discussed in detail, supplying broader platforms for constructing active/passive integrated anti-corrosion coatings in harsh deep sea environments.

Amphiphilic Janus F-SiO2-NH2 particles modified waterborne epoxy coating with excellent anti-corrosion performance

Huaiyin Chen,Mingzu Xu,Jinbo Wang,Congxiang Li,Xiaolin Liu,Meihua Wu,Wei Wang,Longmin Liu,Yongzhao Li,Weihe Yu,Yuekun Lai,Weilong Cai

In this work, amphiphilic Janus F-SiO 2 -NH 2 particles were prepared through step-by-step modification of SiO 2 particles inlaid in and released from paraffin microspheres by fluorosilane and aminosilane respectively, and further modified waterborne epoxy (WEP) coating. The morphology, structure, composition, and surface wettability of the prepared particles as well as the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results indicate that the modified coating gained the improved mechanical properties and anti-corrosion performance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests show that after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 15 days, the impedance modulus at low frequency of F-SiO 2 -NH 2 modified WEP coating was above 10 6  Ω∙cm 2 , two orders of magnitude higher than that of WEP coating. The amphiphilic Janus F-SiO 2 -NH 2 particles not only improved the interfacial compatibility and penetration resistance through the good dispersibility, hydrophobic groups and cross-linking with epoxy resin matrix, but also oriented adsorbed on steel surface to form protective hydrophobic layers. This work provides a simple design approach for constructing highly corrosion-resistant waterborne coatings, which has a certain promoting effect on the development of environmentally friendly high-performance anti-corrosion coatings.
