Alternating carbon dioxide and water flooding can not only seal greenhouse gases, but also combine the advantages of water flooding and carbon dioxide flooding, and can well control mobility and stabilize the displacement front, thereby greatly improving the macro-replacing efficiency. In order to further improve the development effect of water–carbon dioxide alternating flooding, this paper, based on sufficient collection of the literature, research, and analysis, pre-uses modified water instead of water, and deeply explores and studies the impact of modified water–carbon dioxide alternating flooding on the improvement of development effect and the mechanism of enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs. The main work completed is as follows: (1) A comparative experiment of multiple groups of sand-filled tubes with different displacement media, modified water concentrations, and injection plug sizes was conducted under the conditions of simulating reservoir formation temperature of 70 °C and formation pressure of 18 MPa, and the optimal scheme and injection parameters of alternating modified water and carbon dioxide flooding were rationally selected. The results show that the alternating flooding of modified water and carbon dioxide in low-permeability reservoirs can significantly improve the development effect. The optimal injection parameters are a formulation concentration of 0.3% and an injection method of alternating a 0.1 PV slug injection of carbon dioxide and modified water. (2) Using Berea cores instead of sand-fill tubes, a comparative experiment of alternating oil displacement using carbon dioxide and modified water was carried out under the same experimental conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on five of the cores to analyze the microscopic oil displacement mechanisms of different displacement media. The results show the following: nuclear magnetic resonance testing shows that carbon dioxide displacement can greatly improve the oil recovery efficiency in tiny pores (about 47.43%); alternating injection can further improve the oil recovery efficiency in tiny pores (about 70.6%); and modified water can improve the oil recovery efficiency in larger pores (about 56.47%).

Removal of oil from water is strongly desired due to environmental pollution, and related studies are mainly limited to the material itself. Here, we propose an oil–water separation device, called a floating well, which includes a container for oil collection and a modified mesh screen for oil separation. The mesh screen is superhydrophilic to oil and superhydrophobic to water. The oil removal experiment was performed in a basin. Under the calm surface condition, the oil collection efficiency is shown to be 42–69%. The inadequate oil collection is explained by the breakdown of a thin oil film above water to form an oil-free area, preventing direct contact between the separator and the oil. Sustained by a wave generator, we are surprised to find that with a low-frequency surface wave, the oil collection efficiency is increased to 98%, and the collection speed reaches 2.5 times that under the calm surface condition. The almost complete collection is due to the sustained contact between the separator and the oil, under which the surface wave continuously drives the oil film toward the separator from elsewhere, thus the oil-free area cannot be formed. Our work presents a new clue for large-scale in situ applications, in which the nature wave energy of river/sea can be the driving force for continuous oil separation and collection.

The type of oil used and the introduction of bioactive compounds could strongly influence the microstructure and physicochemical properties of Pickering emulsions, which have yet to be fully understood. Herein, oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions were stabilized by autofluorescent gelatin nanoparticles with either corn oil or medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil as references for commonly studied edible oils . The microstructure of the emulsions with changes in nanoparticle concentration, oil fraction (Φ), and oil type was investigated with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). An increase in nanoparticle concentration resulted in an increased thickness of the adsorption layers and number of droplets. Increasing Φ helped to form compact gel-like emulsions and improve the oxidation stability of the emulsions. The high oil-water interfacial tension and surface-active long-chain fatty acids of corn oil caused sparse packing droplet interfaces. Hence, corn oil emulsions were generally less stable than MCT oil emulsions, which was further demonstrated through studies of water holding capacity (WHC), long-term storage stability, and rheology. Furthermore, the incorporation of β-carotene had negative effects on the formation and stability of the emulsions, especially for corn oil emulsions. The findings in this work may have important implications for exploiting Pickering emulsion formulations in real food products.

Oil/water separation has become a worldwide challenge due to large volumes of industrial oily wastewater and frequent oil spill accidents, which constitute an enormous threat to human and biological safety. Herein, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic composite membrane was fabricated using the vacuum-assisted filtration technique of assembly of chitosan (CS) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) on a cellulose acetate membrane for emulsified oil separation. The hydrophilic chitosan–TiO2 (CST) composite and nanoscale hierarchical structure are beneficial for forming a water layer that can repel the infiltration of oil droplets into the membrane. The modified membrane demonstrated an excellent flux up to 6002.5 L m−2 h−1 for hexadecane-in-water emulsion, which is one order of magnitude higher than traditional filtration membranes. Furthermore, the separation efficiency for all of the emulsified oils is above 97%, indicating superior oil/water separation performance. Most importantly, the modified membrane can maintain underwater superoleophobicity even in corrosive aqueous media, including strongly acidic, strongly alkaline, and highly saline solutions. It is expected that the chitosan–TiO2 composite membrane can be potentially useful in treating oily wastewater from industry and daily life.

In this study, we investigated the influence of various factors on the formation of 2-monochloro-1,3-propanediol and 3-monochloro-1,2-propanediol (MCPD) esters in Chinese fried dough sticks. The results showed types of oil significantly affected the content of MCPD esters in fried dough sticks, with palm oil responsible for the highest. As well, temperature and time affected the content of MCPD esters ( P < 0.05). Treatment at 200 °C for 4 min resulted in 1.87 mg/kg 3-MCPD esters and 0.68 mg/kg 2-MCPD esters, respectively. The dough containing 1 g/100 g NaCl was fried at 180 °C for 4 min, resulting in elevated levels of MCPD esters. MCPD esters in fried dough sticks constantly varied during the 8-h cycle in 3 consecutive days and the 12-h frying cycle. Pearson correlation test showed 3-MCPD esters had a positive correlation with 2-MCPD esters ( R = 0.920), which allowed 3-MCPD esters to be a representative index of MCPD esters. A good correlation between the acid value (AV), p -anisidine value ( p -AnV), color (ΔΕ) of frying oil and MCPD esters in fried dough sticks was also found. The changes of MCPD esters of fried dough sticks were assumed to be caused by oxidation and hydrolysis of oil during frying.

Studies have shown that fluorinated oil repellents are potentially harmful to humans and the environment, and therefore, the development of non-toxic, green, and environmentally friendly oil repellents has become inevitable. Microcrystalline wax is a branched saturated alkane with a molecular weight of 580–700 Da, which has a lower surface tension than edible oil. Herein, microcrystalline wax emulsion (fluorine-free oil repellent) was prepared by mechanical stirring–homogenization, the effects of emulsifier ratio and dosage on the emulsion performance were systematically investigated, and the resultant stable microcrystalline wax emulsions were applied to the paper surface to explore the oil and water resistance and water vapor barrier performance. The results showed that stabilized microcrystalline wax emulsion was obtained at the emulsifier Span-80/Tween-80 ratio of 5:5, and the emulsifier dosage was 20% (relative to the microcrystalline wax). When 6 g/m2of microcrystalline wax was applied to the surface of starch pretreated paper, the kit rating value of the paper was high, at up to 10/12, the Cobb60value decreased to 12.5 g/m2, the overall migration of paper was less than 10 mg/dm2, and the water vapor permeability was reduced by 81.9%, which met the requirements of oil and water resistance performance of food packaging paper. Keywords:microcrystalline wax emulsion;oil and water resistance;fluorine-free oil repellent

Effectively separating wide types oil-water mixtures from immiscible to emulsions and in-situ recovering viscous crude oil is an urgent issue in alleviating water pollution and recycling oils. We developed a composite sponge of Cu-HHTP/Fe/PDMS@sponge with superhydrophobicity, excellent photothermal conversion ability and stability for multi-type oils separation from water environments. For light oil-water mixtures, the sponge showed super separation efficiency up to 99.95 % and reusability in the long-term; for oil-in-water emulsion, the separation efficiency was as high as 99.49 %; for recovery of viscous crude oil from water, the absorption capacity of the sponge reached 70 g/g and the continuous absorption rate was up to 6.56 g/min. After soaked in harsh chemical solutions and 500-cycle compression, the sponge still exhibited excellent flexibility and recoverability in viscous oil. The excellent performances of the multifunctional sponge were due to the construction of micro/nano-scale hierarchical structures by PDA and Cu-HHTP, protected with PDMS coating to improve both the hydrophobicity and stability. The introduction of Fe 3 O 4 with Cu-HHTP strengthened the photothermal conversion efficiency with the sponge surface temperature rapidly increased from room temperature to 102.4 °C under simulated sunlight exposure (1 kW/m 2 ), and resulted in the sponge can be remote-controlled magnetically. This simultaneous, fast and continuous oil-water separation and adsorption processes can be readily and widely applied for oily water purification and oil-spill cleanup.

Liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry employing porous graphite carbon columns and an n-octane-isopropanol mobile phase was utilized for the separation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) in various edible oils, aiming to identify lard adulteration in soybean, corn, and sunflower seed oils. Experiments were conducted using a Hypercarb column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, 5 µm) and an n-octane-isopropanol (70:30, V/V) mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.25 mL· min −1 and a column temperature of 60 °C. Detection was achieved through atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry. Analysis of diverse edible oil samples revealed that oils of the same type shared similar TAG compositions, while different types exhibited distinct TAG profiles. Distinct variations in triglyceride composition were observed across different edible oils. Based on liquid chromatography‒mass spectrometry analysis, the characteristic component 1-stearic acid-2-palmitic acid-3-oleic acid glyceride (SPO), which may also include PSO, was identified in lard through principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. This component served as a marker for detecting as low as 0.1% lard adulteration in soybean, corn, and sunflower seed oils. The technique offers a precise and effective approach for the identification of lard adulteration in these edible oils. Graphical abstract

In this work, novel Ni-based catalysts supported on a porous carbon matrix were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method, and studied for the selective hydrotreatment of triolein. Three different catalysts were investigated, including Ni@C-BTC, Ni@C-DHTA and Ni@C-PTA. Of the catalysts studied, the Ni@C-BTC catalyst could achieve the highest conversion (up to 90%) and an excellent cracking ratio (4.61) under moderate reaction conditions (320 °C, 3 MPa, 4 h) in cyclohexane. In addition, other Ni-based catalysts prepared under different temperatures were investigated to study the influence of the calcined temperature on the activity of Ni-based catalysts. The influence of the temperature, H2 pressure, time and catalyst loading amount was investigated for the best performing catalyst (Ni@C-BTC-400). The detailed physicochemical characterization was carried out by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, NH3-TPD, Raman and XPS analysis. In the end, the optimal Ni@C-BTC-400 catalyst could be recycled magnetically, and efficiently applied in the next run for four consecutive recycling tests in the hydrotreatment of triolein.

Surfactants in ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) can improve the stability of the emulsified water droplet by forming a thin film at the water-fuel interface. Emulsified water droplets block the oil spray nozzle and break down the engine, which need to be removed. For colliding emulsified water droplets, surfactant film with high viscoelastic modulus provides an obstacle to their coalescence. Micro/nanosized-SiO 2 particles were added into ULSD to interrupt the arrangement of the surfactant film. After adding with 20 nm SiO 2 , the interfacial tension of water-monoolein-ULSD increased from 16.0 mN/m to 21.4 mN/m, and its viscoelastic modulus decreased from 17.1 mN/m to 10.9 mN/m, a decrease of 36.3%. It proved that the addition of nanosized SiO 2 into water-monoolein-ULSD system increased the interfacial tension and reduced the viscoelastic modulus of the monoolein film. However, after adding nanosized SiO 2 , the viscoelastic modulus of the water-PETO-B-ULSD layer had no significant changes. Therefore, we concluded that 20 nm SiO 2 disturbed the dense packing of monoolein as its adsorption to surfactants and the electrostatic repulsion force between them and the hydrophobic group, resulting in a decrease in elastic modulus . However, PETO-B had a complex branched structure leading to a loose packing, which had unoccupied adsorption sites and barely affected by the intrusion of 20 nm SiO 2 . Therefore, this research provided a strategy to add nanosized-SiO 2 into W/O emulsions containing monoolein-like surfactant to reduce its stability.

Efficient elimination of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution from the environments has received extensive attention due to its severe environmental hazards. Herein, we designed and fabricated a composite bioreactor capable of rapidly and selectively adsorbing petroleum hydrocarbons, specifically diesel , followed by microbial degradation to treat oily wastewater simply and efficiently. Briefly, the bioreactor was prepared using a three-dimensional superhydrophobic/superoleophilic stainless steel mesh as the shell and mixed microbial immobilized kapok fibers as core. By a simple surface modification, the surface water contact angle of the composite bioreactor reaches up to 155°. The high-speed camera's super lipophilic description enables most of the diesel oil to be absorbed within 21 ms. The porosity of the reactor's super hydrophilic kapok fibers aerogel can reach 89%. After immobilized mixed microorganisms , the number of microorganisms increased within 48 h in a favorable environment. The internal space of the reactor shows positive biocompatibility. Afterward, the experimental results of adsorption and degradation for diesel oil show that the degradation rate can reach more than 90% after 204 h, which is about 40% higher than that of the free mixed microorganisms. Compared with the simple method of embedding microorganisms in aerogel , a new core-shell structure microbial reactor is constructed in this paper, which can effectively avoid the risk of microbial leakage and achieve the goal of biodegradation while absorbing oily wastewater. It has constructed a more stable and effective protection space for the continuous degradation of oiling wastewater, while effectively protecting microorganisms from harsh environment, thus showing great potential in various applications such as eliminating organic pollution, oil removal, and wastewater purification.

Tea saponins are widely known as natural surfactants while little attention has been paid to their presence in camellia seed oil. This work aimed to investigate tea saponins and their antioxidant dynamics in camellia seed oil comparing with polyphenols. First, 21 saponins belonging to five sapogenin types were characterized in camellia seed oil with UHPLC-QTOF-MS technology and camelliagenin B type accounted for above 60% of the total content. Next, the glycerides, saponins and polyphenols in the four oil samples were analyzed with mass spectrometry-based platform during 24 h accelerated oxidation after the extracts of tea saponins were added to refined camellia seed oil (RCSO) and blank camellia seed oil (BCSO), respectively. The compositional comparison showed that tea saponins slowed degradation of triglycerides with higher efficiency than both free and bound polyphenols through total decomposition during 4 h oxidation. Further, the oxidative stability of diglycerides showed that curves of RCSO and BCSO overlapped while the saponins added improved the oil samples almost uniformly, which could be related to their surficial activity resulting in a closer space proximity at the interface of “association colloids”. Overall, this study explored a novel antioxidant pathway with natural surfactants in bulk oil.
