Controlling membrane ionization with bifunctional alendronates to benefit desalination through forward osmosis

Guihua Xie,Wenxuan Xu,Qingchun Ge

Gradual ionizing forward osmosis (FO) membranes were synthesized through tailoring modifications with alendronate materials on polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membrane surfaces . The newly developed membranes have gradually ionized surfaces and are more hydrophilic after introducing amino, hydroxyl and phosphate groups derived from the alendronates. Significantly improved performance was achieved with the alendronate-modified membranes relative to the unmodified membrane. With DI water as the feed and 0.5 M MgCl 2 as the draw solution, the novel membranes yielded water fluxes 35–60% higher than the nascent one. When MgCl 2 (2.0 M) as the draw solution, alendronate tetrasodium (A-4Na) modified membrane had a water permeation rate of 17.3 LMH under FO mode (feed solution faced the membrane active layer) in seawater desalination , a 25% increase compared to that of the pristine membrane and surpasses many other recently-developed FO membranes, remarkably increasing water filtration efficiency.

Engineered PW12-polyoxometalate docked Fe sites on CoFe hydroxide anode for durable seawater electrolysis

He Xun,Yao Yongchao,Zhang Min,Zhou Yilei,Zhang Limei,Ren Yuchun,Dong Kai,Tang Hong,Nan Jue,Zhou Xingli,Luo Han,Ying Binwu,Yu Qi,Luo Fengming,Tang Bo,Sun Xuping

Seawater electrolysis driven by offshore renewable energy is a promising avenue for large-scale hydrogen production but faces challenges in designing robust anodes that suppress surface chlorine reactions and corrosion at high current densities. Here we report a strategy by selectively docking PW 12 -polyoxometalate (PW 12 -POM) onto Fe sites of CoFe hydroxide anode to modulate the electronic structure of adjacent Co active centers and regulate Cl⁻/OH⁻ adsorption for efficient alkaline seawater oxidation. Our CoFe-based anode achieves low overpotentials, high catalytic selectivity, and notable durability, with continuous operation at 1 A cm⁻² for over 1300 hours and at 2 A cm⁻² more than 600 hours. Theoretical calculations and ex situ/in situ analyses reveal that PW 12 -POM coordination at Fe sites stabilizes Fe, suppresses its leaching, modulates Co acidity, promotes OH⁻ adsorption, and protects metal sites from Cl⁻ corrosion.

Dual-Modulated Heterojunctions for Anti-Interference Sensing of Heavy Metals in Seawater

Ye Ma,Ming Li,Kun Pang,Minggang Zhao

Trace analyte detection in a complex environment such as in seawater is usually challenging for classic redox-based electrochemical sensors since the matrix effect of high salinity and various interfering species with similar redox properties can generate false positive/negative signals, thus impacting the sensitivity and specificity of the sensors. In this work, unlike redox-based approaches, we propose a novel sensing mode that relies on dual-modulated interfacial energy barriers of heterojunctions. By constructing the hierarchical structure of Ni/TiO2/porous-reduced graphene oxide/chitosan (CS), we introduce interfacial energy barriers of Schottky junctions into the electrochemical sensors for Cu2+. Most importantly, we found that two factors, light and the electrostatic interactions between the heterojunctions and Cu2+, can be coupled to regulate the height of the interfacial energy barrier and at last exponentially magnify the sensing signals in response to Cu2+. Since the electrostatic interaction is inert to redox, the proposed sensor is robust against most interfering species even in seawater. Illumination further enhances its sensitivity by 6.23 times and endows it a limit of detection of 0.22 nM. Such a dual-modulated sensing mode is also valid in other heterojunctions such as in the p–n junctions of Ni/NiO/MoS2/CS, demonstrating its potential in more universal applications.

Polyamide reinforced alginate-based hydrogel for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Long Huo,Feixiang Gao,Maokui Li,Junhang Wang,Xuanyu Li,Jianwei Bai,Haoyuan Wu,Hayinaer Azhati,Chunhong Zhang

The sustainable development of nuclear power hinges on accessing sufficient and stable uranium resources. Although the ocean contains abundant uranium, its low concentration and the presence of various interfering ions pose great challenges to extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, the sodium alginate-polyamidoxime/hyperbranched polyamide hydrogel spheres with high stability and adsorption capacity were developed. The gel spheres are molded by crosslinking sodium alginate with Ca 2+ and form a three-dimensional network structure through the covalent cross-linking of glutaraldehyde, which endows the hydrogel spheres with great stability and forms a pore structure. Accordingly, the unique spherical structure endows it with unparalleled recovery performance, enhancing its ability to efficiently recycle after uranium extraction. Adsorption experiments show that the maximum capacity reaches 537.8 mg·g −1 at a pH of 6. Notably, the hydrogel spheres can adsorb uranium over a larger pH range and maintain morphological stability, which makes them suitable for uranium recovery in complex situations like seawater. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was successfully preserved in five adsorption–desorption cycles, with a high removal rate from 95.07 % to 87.37 %. The dynamic cycle experiment reveals that uranium extraction in real seawater can still reach 82.59 %, indicating a high potential for seawater applications.

Coupling ceria with dual-phased molybdenum carbides for efficient and stable hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis at large-current-density in freshwater and seawater

Minghao Hu,Hengyi Chen,Baocang Liu,Xuan Xu,Bo Cao,Peng Jing,Jingjing Zhang,Rui Gao,Jun Zhang

In this study, we report a novel self-supported electrode consisting of ceria/molybdenum carbides composite microrods with adjustable crystalline phases and abundant heterostructures on carbon cloth (CeO 2 /Mo x C/CC). The optimized CeO 2 /α-MoC/β-Mo 2 C MRs/CC electrode exhibits very low overpotentials of 22 and 29 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline freshwater and seawater, outperforming most of the reported molybdenum carbide-based electrocatalysts. Meanwhile, it could maintain long-term stability for over 100 h at a large current density of 1000 mA·cm −2 . Theoretical study and experimental results reveal that the synergistic effects of α-MoC, β-Mo 2 C, and oxygen vacancy-rich CeO 2 can effectively promote the dissociation of water molecules, tailor the d‐band electronic structure of Mo x C with a thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption free energy , increase the numbers of active sites, and facilitate the vectorial electron transfer, thus achieving an enhanced HER performance. The CeO 2 /α-MoC/β-Mo 2 C MRs/CC electrode displays a potential large-scale application in hydrogen generation.

Bipolar electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater with ultra-low cell voltage

Wang Yanjing,Wen Guobin,Liu Zhijuan,Thuy Nga Ta Thi,Dong Chung-Li,You Jie,Xie Chao,Du Shiqian,Zhang Fei,Liu Qie,Wei Jianrong,Cao Yu,Peng Xinda,Yuan Yahong,Wang Yanyong,Wang Shuangyin

Efficient uranium extraction from seawater has the potential to secure an abundant and reliable supply of nuclear fuel, providing affordable energy with minimized carbon emissions. Among the many extraction methods, the electrochemical route has emerged as a promising choice owing to its fast kinetics and materials regeneration. The major challenges facing this technology, however, lie in its high energy consumption, low extraction efficiency and poor selectivity. Here we show a bipolar electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) system that combines cathodic direct electroreduction of uranium species and electrochemistry-assisted indirect uranium reduction at the anode. The EUE device operates at an ultra-low voltage of merely 0.6 V, exhibiting an efficiency of ~100% for sources with a wide range of uranium concentrations (1–100 ppm). This bipolar EUE system in natural seawater displays excellent uranium selectivity (above 85.3%), long-term stability (45 cycles), low energy consumption (1,944 kWh kg −1  U) and cost advantage (US$83.2 kg −1  U). This work opens an avenue to the electrochemical system design for sustainable recycling of different waste resources.

Construction of an interface interaction in a g-C3N4/CdS/NiS for photoreforming of plastic and clean hydrogen regeneration

Zhe Yin,Huanyu Chen,Qiuyu Wang,Ziwen Wang,Guoping Yu,Binglin Tang,Man Zhang,Kangzheng Li,Zhichao Zhang,Qingcheng Luo,Tianding Hu,Bo Lv

Converting plastics into organic matter by photoreforming is an emerging way to deal with plastic pollution and produce valuable organic matter. Water shortage can be alleviated by using seawater resources. To solve these problems, we synthesize a ternary heterostructure composite g-C 3 N 4 /CdS/NiS. Heterojunctions are formed between graphitized carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), cadmium sulfide (CdS) and nickel sulfide (NiS), which effectively improve the problem of fast charge recombination of pure g-C 3 N 4 and CdS. The results of the g-C 3 N 4 /CdS/NiS photocatalytic tests show that the hydrogen production rates in seawater and pure water for 5 h are 30.44 and 25.79 mmol/g/h, respectively. In stability test, the hydrogen production rate of the g-C 3 N 4 /CdS/NiS in seawater and pure water is similar. This suggests that seawater can replace pure water as a source of hydrogen. While H 2 is generated, the lactate obtained by polylactic acid (PLA) hydrolysis is oxidized to form small organic compounds such as formate, acetate and pyruvate. Our study shows that g-C 3 N 4 /CdS/NiS can not only use seawater as a hydrogen source to produce H 2 , but also photoreformate plastics dissolved in seawater into valuable small organic molecules. This has a positive impact on the production and use of clean energy, as well as on plastic pollution and water scarcity.

Enhanced uranium extraction from seawater using bifunctional-modified molecular sieves with high selectivity and adsorption capacity

Wen Guo,Zixin Lin,Kun Jiang,Hao Li,Xiangfeng Liang,Weizhong An,Huizhou Liu,Haiyan Luo,Haoyu Yao

The extraction of uranium from seawater is not only crucial from a strategic standpoint but also poses significant technical challenges. In this work, a series of novel bifunctionalized mesoporous silicas were prepared through a straightforward method, utilizing the structural characteristics of SBA-15 and synergistic effect of functional groups. The impact of pH value, initial uranium concentration, temperature, and duration on uranium adsorption was investigated through a series of batch experiments. The bifunctional modified SBA-15 demonstrated rapid uranium adsorption, which was a spontaneous endothermic reaction and conformed to the pseudo-second-order model. Thereinto, SBA-15 modified with aldoxime and amino group (SBA-15-SAO-N) exhibited the best uranium adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 701.85 mg·g −1 at 298 K and pH 6, an increase of 146 % compared to SBA-15-SAO. SBA-15-SAO-N exhibits excellent U/V selectivity (selectivity coefficient of 30) in the coexistence of U and V solutions, and it still maintains high adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. In actual seawater conditions, the adsorption capacity of SBA-15-SAO-N was 135.26 μg·g −1 . By combining DFT calculations and characterization, the coordination model and interaction energy between functional groups and uranyl were elucidated, revealing that introducing bifunctional groups can enhance the binding strength of adsorbents to uranium and form more stable complexes, thereby improving adsorption capacity and selectivity. These results indicate that bifunctional modified mesoporous silica offers a promising strategy for recovering uranium resources from seawater.

A synergistic coordination-reduction interface for electrochemical reductive extraction of uranium with low impurities from seawater

Guo Hongliang,Hu Enmin,Wang Yihao,Ou Zhenhong,Huang Bichu,Lei Jia,Liu Huanhuan,He Rong,Zhu Wenkun

Electrochemical extraction of uranium from seawater is a promising strategy for the sustainable supply of nuclear fuel, whereas the current progress suffers from the co-deposition of impurities. Herein, we construct a synergistic coordination-reduction interface in CMOS@NSF, achieving electrochemical extraction of black UO 2 product from seawater. The internal sulfur of CoMoOS tailors the electron distribution, resulting in the electron accumulation of terminal O sites for strong uranyl binding. Meanwhile, the interfacial connection of CoMoOS with Ni 3 S 2 accelerates the electron transfer and promoted the reductive properties. Such synergistic coordination-reduction interface ensures the formation and preservation of tetravalent uranium, preventing the co-deposition of alkalis in crystalline transformation. From natural seawater, CMOS@NSF exhibits an electrochemical extraction capacity of 2.65 mg g −1  d −1 with black UO 2 solid products as final products. This work provides an efficient strategy for the electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater with low impurities.

Tannic Acid-Induced Polypyrrole Photothermal Coating for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Evaporation with Salt Resistance through the Roof-Structure Water Transfer Model

Cuiping Bu,Xingzhen Zhang,Aqiang Chu,Xue Cao,Shenxiang Zhang,Jian Jin

Solar-driven evaporation has received widespread attention in obtaining fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, a major challenge in this process is maintaining a high evaporation rate, while preventing salt accumulation. Herein, a hydrophilic tannic acid (TA)-induced polypyrrole (PPy) coating layer with a controllable thickness was developed on nonwoven fabric using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. TA along with pyrrole (Py) molecules was first deposited on the substrate surface through noncovalent interactions. Then, Fe3+ was bonded with TA through metal coordination, acting as an oxidant for the polymerization of Py molecules. After the LbL cycle process, a uniform TA/PPy coating was formed on the fabric surface, exhibiting excellent hydrophilicity and solar absorption performance. The roof-structure evaporation system was then built by placing the fabric on the roof-structure support, ensuring that seawater flows from top to bottom. This structure helps to remove the concentrated brine from the fabric at the bottom of the evaporator, thereby preventing the accumulation of salt crystals. This design results in a high evaporation rate of 2.67 kg m–2 h–1 and a comparable evaporation efficiency of 89.6% under 1 sun irradiation. It is possible to achieve rapid and continuous evaporation even with high-concentration saline water containing 21% NaCl. Therefore, this study provides a simple construction of TA/PPy coatings suitable for different substrates and demonstrates the design of a roof-structure evaporation system for efficiently producing fresh water from seawater and high-salinity wastewater.

Tailoring the electronic microenvironment of polymeric carbon nitride to accelerate reduction crystallization kinetics of uranium extraction from seawater

Peng Wang,Enmin Hu,Linzhen Wu,Junhui He,Yihao Wang,Zhenhong Ou,Fan Yang,Tao Chen,Wenkun Zhu

Photo-assisted uranium extraction from seawater is regarded as a potential technique for uranium resource recovery. Here, we report a polymeric carbon nitride (SCN-C 3 N 4 ) synthesized via a one-step calcination method, which combines cyano groups (-C≡N) modification and S atoms doping for efficient uranium extraction. By DFT calculations, we confirm that the integration of -C≡N modification and S atoms doping effectively reconstructed the charge distribution on the inside of the heptazine rings, forming a strong driving force for the migration of photogenerated electrons to the reactive sites. Accordingly, the reaction rate constant of SCN-C 3 N 4 ( k  = 0.00843 min −1 ) is 20.07 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 ( k  = 0.00042 min −1 ). Finally, the SCN-C 3 N 4 exhibits a remarkable uranium extraction capacity of 6.05 mg g −1 in natural seawater. Relying on various spectroscopic techniques, we identify the reaction process of uranium, which is captured by -C≡N, forming UO 2.34 crystallization under the joint action of electrons and free radicals. Furthermore, SCN-C 3 N 4 demonstrates excellent antibacterial and corrosion resistance, breaking the bottleneck of uranium extraction from marine biofouling. This work provides an example of designing novel polymeric carbon nitride materials for uranium extraction.

PDA Nanoparticle-Induced Lubricating Film Formation in Marine Environments: An Active Approach

Xinqi Zou,Zhenghao Ge,Chaobao Wang,Yuyang Xi

The low viscosity of water-lubricated films compromises their load-bearing capacity, posing challenges for practical application. Enhancing the lubrication stability of these films under load is critical for the successful use of seawater-lubricated bearings in engineering. Polydopamine (PDA) shows great potential to address this issue due to its strong bio-inspired adhesion and hydration lubrication properties. Thus, PDA nanoparticles and seawater suspensions were synthesized to promote adhesive lubricating film formation under dynamic friction. The lubrication properties of PDA suspensions were evaluated on Cu ball and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) tribo-pairs, with a detailed comparison to seawater. The results show PDA nanoparticles provide excellent adhesion and lubrication, enhancing the formation of lubricating films during friction with seawater. Under identical conditions, PDA suspensions demonstrated the lowest friction coefficient and minimal wear. At 3 N, friction decreased by 56% and wear by 47% compared to distilled water. These findings suggest a novel strategy for using PDA as a lubricant in seawater for engineering applications.
