Anchoring nano-sulfur on graphene oxide for high burning rate black powder

Tian Lu,Shi Xianrui,Shen Jinpeng,Li Zhaoqian,Pei Chonghua

In order to obtain the composite with uniform composition, excellent energy release and combustion performance, nano-sulfur/graphene oxide composite (SG) was prepared by in situ anchoring nano-sulfur on graphene oxide (GO), then mixed with KNO 3 to obtain nano-sulfur/GO/KNO 3 composite (SGK). The morphology, composition, thermal decomposition and combustion performance of the composites were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, IR, XPS, DSC, TG-DSC-FTIR and HSVR. The results show that nano-S was anchored in situ on GO nanosheets and KNO 3 was embedded in SG. The average diameter of nano-S is approximately 20 ~ 40 nm and the size of KNO 3 is approximately 2 ~ 5 μm. The BET surface area of SGK composite is about 14 m 2 g −1 . The exothermic peak temperature of SGK was lower about 15 °C than that of the physical mixture. The reaction activation energy of SGK is 170.9 kJ mol −1 and 173.7 kJ mol −1 by Kissinger and Ozawa methods, respectively, which is lower by about 15 kJ mol −1 than the physical mixture. Compared with standard black powder, the average combustion speed of SGK increased by 8.4 mm s.

Al-Mg@PVDF and Al-Si@PVDF composites with enhanced combustion and energy release characteristics

Zhanjun Yang,Hao Liu,Li Mi,Xiaoqian Wang,Oisik Das,Zhong xuan Han,Lin Jiang

To investigate the differences in combustion and energy release characteristics of metastable intermolecular composite materials composed of aluminum alloys and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with different compositions, two types of alloys were selected: Al-Mg and Al-Si. Pure aluminum powder of the same size was also chosen for comparison. The PVDF-coated metal particle composites and the mixtures of PVDF with metal particles were prepared using electrospray (ES) and physical blending methods (PM), respectively. A systematic study was conducted on the morphology, compositional structure, combustion performance, energy release characteristics, and thermal reactivity of the fabricated composites and their combustion products through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), combustion performance experiments, closed vessel pressure tests, and simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The experimental results indicated that the PVDF-coated metal particles prepared by the electrospray method exhibited a distinct core-shell structure, with the metal particles in close contact with the PVDF matrix. Compared to the PM blended materials, the ES composites demonstrated superior combustion performance and energy release characteristics during combustion. Analysis of different metal fuel systems under identical preparation conditions revealed that Al-Mg and Al-Si fuels modulate the combustion and energy release properties of aluminum alloy-PVDF MICs through two distinct pathways.

Synergetic modification of micron-sized boron powder with fluoroelastomer and glycidyl azide polymer to improve its ignition and combustion

Yang Chen,Junfei Ou,Tianyu Yang,Baozhong Zhu,Yunlan Sun

The restricted energy release efficiency has been a significant hindrance to the utilization of boron (B) powder as a fuel in solid propellants because of the presence of oxidation film on the B surface. To address this issue, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (Viton A) and glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) were used for the collaborative modification of micron-sized boron (µB) powder. The thermal oxidation, ignition, and combustion performance of µB before and after modification were investigated by thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and carbon dioxide laser ignition testing. The dual-layer coating interface structure of B@Viton A@GAP is more conducive to reducing the ignition delay time, accelerating the flame expansion rate, enhancing the combustion intensity, improving the combustion efficiency, and reducing agglomeration of combustion products of B powder. The study offers an effective method to promote the combustion of B through its modification with Viton A and GAP.

Study of polyethylene glycol modified boron particles and their combustion characteristics

Jiuyu Chen,Zhoujie Zuo,Hailong Zhou,Baozhong Zhu,Yunlan Sun

Boron (B) has a good practical application prospect in energetic materials due to its high volumetric and gravimetric heating values. However, the challenge of incomplete combustion inhibited its further application because of the existence of surface boron oxides. Herein, polyethylene glycol (PEG), a kind of oxygen-containing organic matter with an average molecular weight of 2000, was used to modify the B particles at a micron level to improve the combustion performance. The effect of PEG contents on the thermal behavior, heat of combustion, ignition and combustion performance, as well as the combustion intensity of boron powder, was studied. The results showed that the appropriate amount of PEG modification could reduce the ignition temperature of boron powder, increase the degree of oxidation, improve the combustion intensity and heat release. Additionally, the agglomeration behavior of B particles could be alleviated but the improvement diminished with the increase of PEG contents. These results revealed that PEG modification was an efficient strategy to facilitate boron ignition and combustion.

Aluminum nanoparticles manufactured using a ball-milling method with ammonium chloride as a grinding aid: achieving energy release at low temperature

Aifeng Jiang,Fang Wang,Debin Xia,Mengru Li,Liangsheng Qiang,Zhaoyang Zhu,Ping Wang,Ruiqing Fan,Kaifeng Lin,Yulin Yang

Aluminum nanoparticles are widely employed in many fields. However, methods for producing aluminum nanoparticles on a large scale are limited. In this work, we introduce a facile method for manufacturing nanosized aluminum powders on a hundred-gram scale. The key reagents used are ammonium chloride and aluminum(III) acetylacetonate, employed as a grinding aid and surface passivation agent, respectively. The obtained aluminum nanoparticles present excellent stability and are fully characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. Well-formed aluminum nanoparticles with average particle sizes of approximately 30 nm and high specific surface areas of over 30 m2 g−1 can be obtained using the optimal ball-milling reaction time. In this case, the initiation temperature of oxidation was observed at approx. 150 °C and the weight increased by approx. 39% when heated under an air atmosphere. Furthermore, these aluminum nanoparticles achieved quick combustion and a flame temperature of over 1100 °C, which have not been observed using micron aluminum powders. This work provides a facile method for the industrial manufacture of high-quality nanosized aluminum powders.

Fabrication and mechanistic study of AP/nAl/PTFE spherical encapsulated energetic materials with enhanced combustion performance

Yinghui Hu,Bowen Tao,Dongyu Hao,Ruiqing Fan,Debin Xia,Kaifeng Lin,Aimin Pang,Yulin Yang

In this study, the evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method was used to encapsulate nano-sized aluminum (nAl)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) into ammonium perchlorate (AP) to form isolated encapsulated units with size distribution of 1–5 μm. The encapsulated AP/nAl/PTFE composites exhibited a higher combustion heat release (20109.2 J g −1 in 3 MPa O 2 and 11137.2 J g −1 in air), shorter ignition delay time (25.0 ms) and burning time (31.0 ms) than physically-mixed ones (18348.5 J g −1 and 10595.6 J g −1 , 62.5 ms and 32.5 ms). Among all of the prepared composites, AP/nAl/PTFE with 15 wt% PTFE showed the optimum combustion performance. The Al 2 O 3 shell of nAl could be efficiently etched by the in situ formed acid and F gases from AP and PTFE decomposition, which led to cracks and holes to release more active Al. The more intimate interaction, shorter diffusion length and more active Al release contributed to the enhanced combustion performance of AP/nAl/PTFE.

Synergetic Effect of Potassium Oxysalts on Combustion and Ignition of Al/CuO Composites

Xiaohang Ma,Wanjun Zhao,Wei Le,Jianxin Li,Pengwan Chen,Qingjie Jiao

In this study, we studied the synergetic effect of potassium oxysalts on combustion and ignition of nano aluminum (Al) and nano copper oxide (CuO) composites. Potassium periodate (KIO4) and potassium perchlorate (KClO4) are good oxidizers with high oxygen content and strong oxidizability. Different contents of KIO4and KClO4were added to nano Al/CuO and the composites were assembled by sonication. When the peak pressure of nano Al/CuO was increased ~5–13 times, the pressurization rate was improved by ~1–3 orders of magnitude, the ignition delay time was shortened by ~0.08 ms–0.52 ms and the reaction completeness was adjustable when 30–70% KIO4and KClO4were added into the composites. The reaction of Al/KIO4and Al/KClO4at a lower temperature was helpful to ignite the ternary composite. Meanwhile, CuO significantly reduced the peak temperature of oxygen released from the decomposition of KIO4and KClO4. The synergetic effect of binary oxidizers made the combustion performance of the ternary composites better than that of the binary composites. The present work indicates that KIO4and KClO4are promising additives for nano Al/CuO to tune and promote the combustion performance. The ternary composites have potential application in energy devices and combustion apparatus. Keywords:potassium oxysalts;synergetic effect;combustion performance;copper oxide;reactivity;ignition

Effects of metal–organic complex Ni(Salen) on thermal decomposition of 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7)

Wenzhe Ma,Yanjing Yang,Fengqi Zhao,Kangzhen Xu,Jiankan Zhang,Ming Zhang,Zhicun Feng

The development of novel combustion catalysts is critical for improving combustion performance of high-energy solid propellants. In this work, a nickel-based Schiff base complex, N,N′-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamino nickel [Ni(Salen)], as a candidate for the combustion catalyst of solid propellants, was synthesized with high purity. The effects of Ni(Salen) on the thermal decomposition reaction of FOX-7, which is closely related to its combustion properties in propellants, were systematically investigated and the corresponding mechanisms were also evaluated through comparison and analysis. Under the action of Ni(Salen), peak temperatures of the two decomposition processes of FOX-7 were reduced from 235.7 and 296.3 °C to 233.7 and 268.7 °C, respectively. The investigations into the mechanisms revealed the interactions between the Schiff base skeleton in Ni(Salen) and FOX-7, which promotes the decomposition of the remaining FOX-7. In addition, it was found that NiO, which was a decomposition product of Ni(Salen), also played an important role in promoting the thermal decomposition of FOX-7.

An effective strategy to improve combustion and pressure output performance of HMX/Al

Qianqian He,Jun Wang,Yaofeng Mao,Wei Cao,Jie Chen,Fude Nie

To improve and adjust the combustion and energy output of HMX/Al, graphite fluoride (CF) as oxidizer was introduced in HMX/Al and gradient structured HMX/Al/CF was prepared by additive manufacturing technology . For HMX/Al added with CF, a significantly exothermic peak is observed ranging from 860 to 950 °C due to the reaction of Al and fluorine derived from CF decomposition, and the heat release increases by 106.63% compared to that of HMX/Al. The fourth exothermic heat increases from 161.48 to 955.25 J/g with the increased Al content from 10 to 30 wt%. Moreover, the combustion rate and pressure output of HMX/Al have been improved by introducing CF. For HMX/Al added with CF, the combustion time decreases from 10.3 to 2.5 s, which is dependent on the Al content from 10 to 30 wt%. And the highest peak pressure is 1712.2 kPa when Al content is 20 wt% in HMX/Al/CF composites. Furthermore, gradient structured HMX/Al/CF consisting of three layers with Al content of 10, 20 and 30 wt% was prepared to improve combustion and pressure output. The combustion rate and peak pressure of gradient structured HMX/Al/CF are higher than those of single structured HMX/Al/CF. The highest peak pressure (∼2.24 MPa) is obtained when the Al content of the middle layer and outer layer is 30 wt% and 20 wt% in the gradient structured HMX/Al/CF cylinder, respectively. Finally, the reaction intermediates and combustion reaction products were fully characterized to understand the enhanced effect of CF in HMX/Al. This work provides a promoting way to improve and regulate the combustion reaction performance and pressure output of HMX/Al.

A novel 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide-based reactive flame retardant for epoxy resin: Synthesis, properties, and comparison

Qibin Xu,Shengchang Zhang,Zexi Su,Dazhe Li,Shuheng Liang,Bo Li,Tingting Lian,Xiangpu Qin,Mengjin Jiang,Pengqing Liu

9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and DOPO derivatives had always been regarded as main candidates for improving the flame retardancy of epoxy resin (EP). In this paper, a novel reactive flame retardant DOPOMAH was synthesized from the reaction between DOPO and cis-butenedioic anhydride (MAH), thereafter acted as a co-curing agent for EP to remarkably improve the flame retardancy of matrix. The effects of DOPOMAH and DOPO on comprehensive performance of EP were systematically investigated and compared through dynamic mechanical analysis, mechanical performance testing, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL-94), and cone calorimetry test. These results indicated that the excellent dispersion of DOPOMAH in EP makes the EP modified by DOPOMAH has good mechanical properties. When the content of phosphorus is 2.0 wt%, compared with the EP modified by DOPO (ED), the LOI of the EP modified by DOPOMAH (EDM) increased from 30.6% to 32.8%, and the UL-94 was also improved from no rating to V-0. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate of EDM was only 51% of that of pure EP, which was slightly less than that of ED. Finally, a flame-retardant mechanism comparison between DOPOMAH and DOPO was discussed in detail to reveal the reasons why the flame reatardant effect of DOPOMAH was better than that of DOPO.

Combustion behavior and mechanism of molecular perovskite energetic material DAP-4-based composites with metal fuel Al

Peng Deng,Xue-yong Guo,Hua Fang,Rui Liu,Peng-wan Chen

Combined with the oxidizer anions and fuel cations, molecular perovskite energetic materials show a good potential. In this work, the combustion behavior and mechanism of metal fuel aluminium (Al) with molecular perovskite energetic material (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] (DAP-4) as a high-energy oxidant was investigated. The DAP-4 based composites with metal fuel Al were designed and fabricated by the different mass ratios. Results showed that DAP-4 exhibits a good oxygen-supplied capacity for enhancing the combustion performance of Al. The maximum combustion heat of DAP-4/Al-3 at the Al/O mass ratio of 38:62 is up to 10,412 J/g in the inert gas, which is higher than those of other ratios and the mixtures of other energetic materials and Al. The evolution of pressure output, pressurization rate, and flame temperature was monitored for DAP-4/Al with different mass ratios. Composites DAP-4/Al/F were characterized by burning rates. The combustion reaction mechanism of metal fuel Al with DAP-4 as a high-energy oxidant was provided. DAP-4 was ignited firstly and released acid and oxidizing gases, which corroded Al 2 O 3 shells on Al particle surfaces and accelerated the combustion reaction with Al to release a lot of energy. This work offered a new idea that molecular perovskite energetic materials have great potential in the high-energy Al-based solid rocket propellants.

Effect of Mo-Containing Additives on Combustion of Al-B Fuels

Xiang-Dong Meng,Shui-Zhou Cai

In this study, the Al-B-Mo alloy powders with a boron content of 7 wt % and Molybdenum content of 0.5–3 wt % were prepared by the close-coupled gas atomization. The powder morphology, phase composition, oxidation, and exothermic behavior of combustion were characterized. The results show that the addition of Mo effectively improves the energetic properties of the alloy powder, with the mass-burning enthalpy of Al-7B-1Mo reaching 31111 J/g, exceeding the theoretical mass-burning enthalpy of monolithic Al (31000 J/g). Al-7B-1Mo underwent a violent exothermic process at around 1000 °C, and the oxidation weight gain ratio and oxidation efficiency reached 46.16 % and 48.05 % respectively, an increase of 19.75 % and 21.08 % compared to Al-7B. The mesh structure formed by the AlB 2 phase on the particle surface positively promoted the particles′ thermal oxidation. Mechanical mixtures of AlB 2 /Mo and AlB 2 /MoO 3 were prepared and the catalytic promotion of the combustion of AlB 2 by Mo and MoO 3 was confirmed by thermal tests of combustion. The mechanism by which Mo/MoO 3 promotes the combustion of AlB 2 was investigated through the phase composition characterization of the composite powder after heat treatment in argon and air atmosphere. It was confirmed that MoO 3 promotes the oxidation and combustion of AlB 2 by supplying oxygen to B in AlB 2 , while Mo is first oxidized to MoO 3 , which then promotes the combustion of AlB 2 .
