Removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution using chitosan-combined magnetic biochars

Fangfang Xiao,Jianhua Cheng,Wen Cao,Cao Yang,Junfeng Chen,Zifen Luo

The use of chitosan combined with magnetic Loofah biochar (CMLB) was investigated for the removal of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The modified biochar had higher Cr(VI) and Cu(II) adsorption capacity than that of pristine biochar. 40%-CMLB showed high Cr(VI) and Cu(II) adsorption capacity of 30.14 mg/g, and 54.68 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption reached equilibrium within 18 h. The study found that the experimental data showed the best fit for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model. Additionally, after three reuse cycles, Cr(VI) and Cu(II) adsorption capacity by CMLB were 23.34 mg/g and 42.6 mg/g, respectively. XPS results indicated that ion exchange and surface complexation were the primary mechanisms for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) adsorption.

Comprehensive insights into cellulose structure evolution via multi-perspective analysis during a slow pyrolysis process

Jiajin Liang,Jiao Chen,Shubin Wu,Chao Liu,Ming Lei

Comprehensive understanding of cellulose pyrolysis is critical to valuable chemical and liquid fuel generation in biomass-based biorefining processes. Herein, a specific tubular reactor was designed to observe the cellulose appearance alteration corresponding to the chemical structure evolution in various pyrolysis stages. The appearance of cellulose changed from white powder to light brown powder below 300 °C as its crystal lattice thermal expansion and the degree of crystallinity decrease. Cellulose began to depolymerize at 300 °C accompanied with the dehydration of pinacol and primary product levoglucosan generation. 325–350 °C was the critical pyrolysis stage for cellulose. The intermediate state was formed accompanied with a series of thermochemical reactions. All the typical signals from FTIR, 13C CP/MAS NMR disappeared when the temperature was up to 350 °C. The percentages of C, H, and O conversion to the volatile products were up to 35%, 55% and 60%, respectively, along with β-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage, decarboxylation, and decarbonylation reactions. Meanwhile, CO2, CO, and CH4 were measured using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR) in the slow pyrolysis process. The increasing C/H and C/O ratios in the carbonation stage enhanced the aromaticity of biochar. Furthermore, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that it tended to form carbon-centered radicals.

Effective removal of aqueous glyphosate using CuFe2O4@biochar derived from phragmites

Dongmei Jia,Min Liu,Jiangbao Xia,Changhai Li

BACKGROUND The excess use of glyphosate in both agricultural and nonagricultural areas has led to tremendous health (e.g. cardiac and respiratory impacts) and environmental concerns worldwide. There is an urgent need to find efficient ways to remove glyphosate residue from the aqueous environment. RESULTS Herein, an effective method for the removal of aqueous glyphosate is developed by employing nano-CuFe 2 O 4 modified biochar (BC) as an adsorbent. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorbents were prepared through hydrolyzing phragmite powders at 500 °C, followed by a simple coprecipitation method. The influence of initial glyphosate concentration, temperature, pH, time and coexisting species on the adsorption behavior of CuFe 2 O 4 @BC to glyphosate were fully examined. CONCLUSION It was found that the adsorption of glyphosate onto CuFe 2 O 4 @BC is highly dependent on the initial glyphosate concentration, pH and temperature, as well as coexisting species. The Freundlich and Langmuir models fitted the equilibrium isotherm data well, indicating the presence of both physisorption and chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption kinetic is well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicated that chemical adsorption may dominate the adsorption process. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorption of glyphosate presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 269.4 mg g −1 within 240 min, under 600 mg L −1 of glyphosate solution at 298 K and pH 4; this performance exceeds all other biochar-derived adsorbents for the removal of aqueous glyphosate encountered in the open literature. Such a cost-effective, high-performance adsorbent shows a great potential for the removal of aqueous glyphosate in industry. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Biochar combined with compost to reduce the mobility, bioavailability and plant uptake of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether in soil

Leilei Xiang,Hongjie Sheng,Chenggang Gu,Redmile-Gordon Marc,Yu Wang,Yonrong Bian,Xin Jiang,Fang Wang

Biochar application to soil is recognised for its capacity to immobilise pollutants (through sorption) while composted inputs can accelerate the biodegradation of organic pollutants. However, little is known about the influence of combined incorporation on plant uptake of organic pollutants. Therefore, we investigated the effects of maize straw-derived biochar (MSB), compost derived from maize straw and pig manure (SMC), and their combination (MSB-SMC) as soil amendments on bioavailability of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) and carrot ( Daucus carota L. ) uptake in a horticultural soil. We found that biochar alone performed well in reducing BDE-47 bioavailability, but was less effective at degrading the pollutant. Conversely, addition of compost stimulated BDE-47 biodegradation. MSB-SMC enhanced BDE-47 biodegradation in soil, reduced contamination of carrot roots, and caused significant reductions in soil extractable BDE-47. The combination of contrasting approaches to remediation thus resulted in the most favorable outcome for a contaminated soil: immobilisation of contaminant from vegetable crops (via biochar) with simultaneous bioremediation of the growing medium. These findings point towards an effective strategy for reducing plant uptake of PDBEs through the combined use of biochar and compost as soil amendment – reducing mobility and facilitating degradation of the accessible contaminant fractions.

Removal and recovery of phosphorus from solution by bifunctional biochar

Yunwen Liao,Si Chen,Qian Zheng,Bingyuan Huang,Juan Zhang,Hongquan Fu,Hejun Gao

The bifunctional biochar(N/CaO/BC) was prepared by a simple high temperature calcination using melamine and biomass material of sugarcane bagasse and agricultural wastes eggshell. Its structure and properties were analyzed by SEM, XRD, BET, and XPS. The adsorption capacity was evaluated in the phosphorus solutions. The effect of initial pH, concentration and temperature on adsorption were investigated. Nano-CaO were disperse evenly on the surface of Biochar, resulting a special specific surface area and porous structures. It has a rich nitrogen and CaO and the adsorption capacity could obtain 251.16 mg P/g at 300 K over a broad range of pH. The electrostatic force caused by C = NH + and precipitation reaction caused by CaO are the main driving forces of phosphorus removal and it exhibited a good P adsorption selectivity. P-rich N/CaO/BC contain P, N, C, Ca elements, which could provide nutrients to the soil and promotes the growth of crops. The dual-functionalization strategy of biochar provides a new way for the reuse of waste biomass and a new method for P utilization as resource in agricultural production.

Preparation of bagasse pith-derived biochar for high-efficiency removal of Cr(VI) and further hydrogenation of furfural

Chen Dong,Chen Shanshuai,He Liang,Guan Qingqing,Miao Rongrong

Porous biochar was prepared from agricultural and forestry wastes to remove Cr(VI) in sewage, which solved the problem of water pollution and realized the reuse of wastes. Herein, in this work, the bagasse pith residues after alkali pre-extraction have been used as the raw material for preparing porous biochars ( BPR -BC), which could be further used for efficiently purifying the simulated Cr(VI) wastewater. The results showed that the as-prepared biochars had an ultra-high specific surface area of 2745.7 m 3 /g and Cr(VI) removal capacity of 185.07 mg/g. The kinetic and isotherms studies were best described by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, respectively. The thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, based on the concept of “waste to waste,” the Cr-contained waste adsorbent by doping Cu has been converted into a bagasse pith residues biochar supported Copper-Chromium catalyst (Cu-CrOx/ BPR -BC) for further hydrogenation of furfural. The catalytic experimental result showed that the furfural 1 can be selectively converted into furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and difurfuryl ether (DEF) catalyzed by the prepared Cu-CrOx/ BPR -BC catalyst, provided a new idea for the further utilization of Cr(VI) containing adsorbents.

Single and Binary Adsorption Behaviour and Mechanisms of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ onto Modified Biochar in Aqueous Solutions

Liwen Zheng,Yongchao Gao,Jianhua Du,Wen Zhang,Yujie Huang,Qingqing Zhao,Luchun Duan,Yanju Liu,Ravi Naidu,Xiangliang Pan

The chitosan–EDTA modified magnetic biochar (E–CMBC) was successfully used as a novel adsorbent to remove heavy metals. The adsorption behaviour and mechanisms of E–CMBC to Cd2+, Cu2+and Ni2+were performed in single and binary system in aqueous solutions. In single–metal system, the adsorption process of Cd2+, Cu2+and Ni2+on E–CMBC fitted well with the Avrami fractional–order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The measured maximum adsorption capacities were 61.08 mg g−1, 48.36 mg g−1and 41.17 mg g−1for Cd2+, Cu2+and Ni2+, respectively. In binary–metal system, coexisting ions have obvious competitive adsorption behaviour on E–CMBC when the concentration of heavy meal beyond 20 mg L−1. The maximum adsorption capacities of the heavy metals were found to be lower than that in single–metal system. The order of the competitive adsorption ability was Cu2+> Ni2+> Cd2+. Interestingly, in Cd2+–Cu2+system the earlier adsorbed Cd2+could be completely replaced by Cu2+from the solution. Different competitive adsorption ability of those heavy metal were due to the characteristics of heavy metal and resultant affinity of the adsorption sites on E–CMBC. The adsorption mechanism indicated that chemical adsorption played a dominating role. Therefore, E–CMBC could be a potential adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Keywords:modified biochar;heavy metals;competitive adsorption;mechanisms

Co-Pyrolyzed Rice Husk and Cow Bone In Situ Cd-Remediation for Corn Plant Growth. A Comprehensive Case Study

Liu Caiying,Liu Yanyan,Feng Jiapeng,Li Yaru,Tao Jun,Xie Xiaoxiao

The paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of biochar prepared from the co-pyrolysis of rice husk and cow bone (RHCBC) for in situ remediation and amelioration of Cd-contaminated soil. Effects of RHCBC on Cd bioavailability in soil and Cd uptake in corn growth were investigated through cultivation experiments and pot experiments. The results showed that the addition of RHCBC in the Cd-contaminated soil achieved the increase of soil pH, CEC, and SOM, whereas the soil available Cd content was reduced by 29.08–51.06%, which was proved by the transformation of Cd from acid soluble and exchangeable state to residual state. Furthermore, the nutrient contents of soil were also increased by 82.41–230.09% for alkali-hydrolyzable N, 66.81–144.03% for available P, and 16.20–77.70% for available K, respectively, which promoted the growth of corn. Overall, it is a promising strategy to employ RHCBC for in situ remediation of Cd-contaminated soil and promotion of plant growth as efficient soil amendment.

Adsorption characteristics and mechanism of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate from biogas slurry by Ca2+-modified soybean straw biochar

Xiaomei Wu,Meifeng Ye,Jinglong Wang,Feilong Wu,Cenwei Liu,Zhangting Li,Daiyan Lin,Rilong Yang

The utilization of biogas slurry is critical for the sustainable development of animal husbandry. Biomass carbon adsorption is a feasible method for the recycling of nutrients from biogas slurry. However, research on the co-adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate is scarce. Herein, soybean straw was utilized as the raw material to prepare Ca 2+ -modified biochar (CaSSB), which was investigated for its ammonia nitrogen and phosphate adsorption mechanisms. Compared with natural biochar (SSB), CaSSB possesses a high H/C ratio, larger surface area, high porosity and various functional groups. Ca 2+ -modified soybean straw biochar exhibited excellent adsorption performance for NH 4 + –N (103.18 mg/g) and PO 4 3− −P (9.75 mg/g) at pH = 6, using an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L. The experimental adsorption data of ammonia nitrogen by CaSSB corresponded to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that the adsorption process was homogeneous and that electrostatic attraction might be the primary adsorption mechanism. Meanwhile, the adsorption of phosphate conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir–Freundlich model, whose mechanism might be attributed to ligand exchange and chemical precipitation. These results reveal the potential of CaSSBs as a cost-effective, efficient adsorbent for the recovery of ammonium and phosphate from biogas slurry.

Enhanced sludge dewaterability by a novel MnFe2O4-Biochar activated peroxymonosulfate process combined with Tannic acid

Xian Yang,Liuting Zeng,Jinjia Huang,Zhihua Mo,Zhijie Guan,Shuiyu Sun,Jialin Liang,Shaosong Huang

The high moisture content of sludge is a key factor limiting its subsequent treatment and disposal. Herein, a novel method of MnFe 2 O 4 -biochar (MFB) activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) combined with tannic acid (TA) was conducted to improve sludge dewatering . The effects of different concentrations of MFB, PMS, and TA on waste activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability were investigated. The water content of sludge cake dropped to 40.80% when the initial pH was 5.0, and the concentration of PMS, MFB, and TA was 0.64 mM/g DS, 100 mg/g DS, and 0.12 mM/g DS respectively, demonstrating that MFB/PMS/TA could effectively enhance sludge dewaterability. Analyzing the changing of sludge properties and characterizing MFB confirmed that the enhancement of sludge dewaterability occurred in two phases. First, TA accelerated the valence transformation of Fe and Mn to promote PMS activation, which strengthened the oxidation capacity of the system. Second, TA complexed and precipitated protein to enhance the compressibility and dewaterability of sludge. Furthermore, MFB/PMS/TA treatment could increase the calorific value of treated sludge, and after the combined treatment, the sludge biochar also had a better pore structure, indicating that the sludge after the combined treatment posed a good prospect of resource utilization. These findings provide a novel strategy for the practical application of achieving efficient sludge deep dewatering, providing a valuable reference for downstream sludge utilization .

Enhanced activation of PMS via Fe-MOFs-derives@BC for efficient removal of dyes: Complementary between radical and nonradical pathways

Mingjun Xie,Yuying Han,Na Wang,Zixuan Huang,Congting Sun

The efficient elimination of recalcitrant synthetic dyes from complex waters remains a pressing challenge for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, an Fe-MOFs-derives@BC composite was fabricated by anchoring MIL-101(Fe) crystals onto rice-straw biochar followed by high-temperature carbonization. XRD, SEM and XPS confirm the formation of a crystal–amorphous hybrid in which residual MIL-101(Fe) nanocrystallites are embedded within a conductive carbon matrix rich in oxygen vacancies. The composite rapidly activates PMS via a synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle and carbon-facilitated electron transfer, generating SO₄• − , •OH, and 1 O₂ to driving Rhodamine B (RhB) and Malachite Green (MG) degradation. Under optimal conditions (0.1 g L −1 catalyst, 0.1 g L −1 PMS), >90% RhB and MG were removed within 15 min across deionised, groundwater, lake and river matrices; even in the most complex river water, 90% removal is achieved in 10 min. When Fe-MOFs-derives@BC is immobilised in a poly (vinylidene fluoride) membrane, a continuous-flow micro-reactor maintains >90% removal over 600 min with negligible flux decline and undetectable Fe leaching. This hybrid radical/non-radical pathway, broad matrix tolerance and long-term membrane stability position Fe MOFs-derives@BC/PMS as a robust, scalable platform for advanced wastewater treatment.

Impact of External Conditions on the Desorption and Degradation Capacity of Biochar for Rhodamine B

Chenghong Ao,Mai Shan,Yue Zhang,Xiang Li,Ying Kong,Xinwei Dong,Yang Liu,Danping Wu

Biochar has attracted considerable interest owing to its high adsorption capacity; however, the mechanisms through which environmental factors influence the release of adsorbed pollutants remain unclear. This study investigates the adsorption and desorption dynamics of Rhodamine B (RhB) on biochars B2 and B6, which were pyrolyzed at temperatures of 200 °C and 600 °C, respectively, under varying conditions. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in removal efficiency at low RhB concentrations; however, at a concentration of 600 mg/L, biochar B2 had a higher removal efficiency than B6, likely attributable to more adsorption sites. Increased temperatures were found to enhance desorption from both B2 and B6, with B6 exhibiting a faster desorption rate. This phenomenon may be due to the stronger hydrogen bonding between B2 and RhB, which could inhibit desorption. In addition, elevated pH values facilitated desorption, presumably through electrostatic repulsion. Under alkaline conditions, B2 released a greater amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM), leading to increased RhB desorption relative to B6. This study offers a valuable reference for evaluating the environmental risk associated with the application of biochar in real-world settings.
