Producing electricity via microorganisms is promising as a sustainable and inexpensive energy source. However, most of the reported classical electroactive microorganisms are unusual in the environment, hindering their practical application. Here, we used carbon dots (CDs) to boost the power generation of common but nonclassical electroactive microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , in the natural environment. The CDs, which have good biocompatibility and high electron transfer efficiency, are taken up by bacterial cells and enable electrons to migrate rapidly to the ambient electrode because of the formation of robust electron transfer networks. The CDs promote electrochemical redox activity and increase the internal charge generation, and reduce the electrochemical impedance of the bacteria. As a result, the CDs facilitate rapid and high power generation in the microbial chemical cells and microbial fuel cells, with a nearly 94-fold and 172-fold improvement in current and power output compared with unmodified Escherichia coli . This work offers an important strategy for enhancing the generation of bioelectricity and facilitates the functional optimization of technologies that depend on microbial electron transfer.

Interfacial solar steam generation has emerged as a promising approach for alleviating global freshwater shortages. Growing research interest focuses on harnessing sustainable biomass materials like wood to achieve dual-functional systems that produce freshwater while harvesting evaporation-induced energy for electricity generation. In this study, a laser-scribed wood photoabsorber is proposed to enable efficient co-generation of fresh water and electricity. Through brush-coating of cobalt nitrate solution followed by laser direct writing, a composite layer of graphite-Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles was successfully fabricated on the surface of basswood. Both cobalt salt coating and delignification processing were demonstrated to enhance the evaporation and electricity output performance of laser-engineered wood photoabsorbers. The device realized an evaporation rate and an efficiency of 1.71 kg m -2 h −1 and 92.8 % under 1 sun irradiation, respectively. Under ambient conditions without light irradiation, a single device (2 × 2 × 1 cm 3 ) was able to produce an open-circuit voltage of ∼336 mV and a stable short-circuit current of ∼30 μA in pure water. Furthermore, when multiple devices were connected in series, the generated voltage was sufficient to light a light-emitting diode or power an electronic calculator. Through laser-scribing of biomass materials, this study develops a sustainable solar interfacial evaporator capable of simultaneous freshwater production and electricity generation.

Renewable electricity-powered CO 2 reduction to multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products offers a promising route to realization of low-carbon-footprint fuels and chemicals. However, a major fraction of input CO 2 (>85%) is consumed by the electrolyte through reactions with hydroxide to form carbonate/bicarbonate in both alkaline and neutral reactors. Acidic conditions offer a solution to overcoming this limitation, but also promote the hydrogen evolution reaction. Here we report a design strategy that suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction activity by maximizing the co-adsorption of CO and CO 2 on Cu-based catalysts to weaken H* binding. Using density functional theory studies, we found Pd–Cu promising for selective C 2+ production over C 1 , with the lowest ∆ G OCCOH* and ∆ G OCCOH* - ∆ G CHO* . We synthesized Pd–Cu catalysts and report a crossover-free system (liquid product crossover <0.05%) with a Faradaic efficiency of 89 ± 4% for CO 2 to C 2+ at 500 mA cm −2 , simultaneous with single-pass CO 2 utilization of 60 ± 2% to C 2+ .

Microbial fuel cell is a promising way for renewable energy recovery. The direct conversion of urine into electricity through MFC has been tested, considering that urine has rich organic substances and high conductivity, demonstrating dual benefits for electricity generation and urine treatment as a feasible method. However, it still suffers from several constraints relating to anodes, including limited bacterial loading capacity and inferior extracellular electron transfer efficiency. Substantial efforts have been made to improve electricity production, especially to develop new anodes. In this study, we prepared a new composite anode (SC-FeNi) and used it in an MFC reactor to recover energy from urine. The power density of the SC-FeNi anode could reach 524.93 mW·m −2 when using synthetic urine and increased to 1720.1 mW·m −2 when replaced with undiluted human urine, which was the highest power density in monomer MFC fueled with urine to the best of our knowledge. SC-FeNi had high conductivity (12.29 S·m −1 ), large specific surface area (1236.417 m²·g −1 ), and enriched high microorganism density (312.04 ± 15.4 mg·cm − ³). The stable power generation period in batch mode reached 288 h. This experiment verified that combining foam metal and disordered porous carbon as MFC electrode materials could generate energy from human urine waste with high efficiency and durability.

Piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) have attracted much attention due to their efficient harvesting of vibrational energy from the ambient environment, which demonstrates great potential applications. Unfortunately, their low energy density severely hinders the further development of PEHs. Therefore, it is highly desirable to search for piezoelectric materials with a high transduction coefficient (d33 × g33). In this work, an excellent d33 × g33 is achieved in Pb0.94(La0.06-xNdx) (Zr0.58Ti0.42)0.985O3 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04) (PL0.06-xNxZT) ceramics by composition modulation. The best d33 × g33 of 26.71 pm2/N is obtained with an optimal composition of x = 0.02. Moreover, a superior output voltage of 28.4Vp and power density of 15.93 μW/mm3 are simultaneously obtained for the sample applied in the PEH system. The sizes of the polar nanodomains of the samples are estimated using a phenomenological statistical model, and the domain configuration is observed using PFM. Our results indicate that composition modulation in PLZT can regulate and awaken ferroelectric domains, giving rise to an ultrahigh d33 × g33, which consequently results in enhanced performance of the output voltage and power density of PEHs.

Renewable electricity-driven capture and conversion of oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon into value-added chemicals offers a sustainable route towards negative carbon emissions and a circular carbon economy. Here we present an artificial ocean carbon recycling system that captures and converts oceanic carbon sources into biochemicals through a decoupled electro-biocatalytic hybrid process. The system captures CO 2 from natural seawater under very dilute yet realistic dissolved inorganic carbon conditions (2.16 mM) with high capture efficiency (>70%), low energy consumption (3 kWh kgCO 2 −1 ) and long stability (536 h). Techno-economic analysis revealed a competitive cost of capture (US$229.9 tCO 2 −1 ). Using a highly efficient and stable bismuth-based electrocatalyst, CO 2 was further converted into pure formic acid (800 mA cm −2 at −1.37 V) and subsequently transformed by engineered Vibrio natriegens into succinic acid (1.37 g l −1 ). Therefore, our electro-bioconversion system represents a solution to sustainable biochemical synthesis using the ocean carbon sink as a resource.

Freshwater scarcity and energy shortages stand as two of the most pressing global challenges confronting modern society. The integration of solar-driven interfacial evaporation with the hydrovoltaic effect emerges as a highly promising strategy to address both issues simultaneously. In this study, we report the development of Janus Nb 2 CT X /graphene aerogels (NGAs) specifically engineered to synergistically facilitate solar-driven seawater evaporation and hydrovoltaic power generation. The Janus NGAs were fabricated via a combination of hydrothermal reaction, freeze-drying, and surface modification techniques, yielding a three-dimensional porous architecture with distinct hydrophilic-hydrophobic asymmetry—a key structural feature for their dual-functional performance. Under 1 sun irradiation, the optimized NGA-3 sample achieved a high seawater evaporation rate of 1.64 kg·m −2 h −1 and an exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency of 86.61 %, attributed to the reduced water evaporation enthalpy (1904 kJ·kg −1 ) induced by the formation of intermediate water within the aerogel's porous structure. Meanwhile, the Nb 2 CT X MXene component enhances broadband sunlight absorption through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, further boosting photothermal conversion. Concurrently, the NGAs exhibit robust hydrovoltaic performance: in NaCl solution, NGA-3 generated a stable output voltage of 147 mV under 1 sun and 236 mV under 3 sun. A peak power density of 197 μW·cm −2 was achieved in 10 wt% NaCl solution, demonstrating its adaptability to high-salinity environments. Additionally, the NGAs maintain excellent salt resistance and long-term operational stability. The synergistic integration of efficient photothermal conversion and electricity harvesting in the Janus NGAs offers a viable solution to alleviate global freshwater and energy pressures.

Graphical Harvest from inexhaustible nature : Intermittent renewable electricity can be stored in chemical bonds by atomic economy production of fuels and chemicals from the aqueous solution of biomass over efficient and stable nanoscale electrodes. Electrochemical valorization of non-food biomass-derived carboxylates into fuels is promising for the conversion, storage, and distribution of renewable electricity. Herein, we demonstrate that biofuels, hydrogen, and bicarbonate can be simultaneously produced in an electrochemical cell by one-step electrolysis of free fatty acids under ambient conditions on 3D self-supported ultralow Pt loading (2 wt %) electrode. The three valuable products can naturally separate from each other during the electrolysis in the alkaline aqueous solution. The experimental suggests that Pt(100) and Pt(110) are favorable for the production of non-Kolbe and Kolbe hydrocarbons, respectively. DFT calculation further clarifies the adsorption and stabilization of the reaction intermediates on Pt(100) and Pt(110).

Microbial fuel cells with mixed bacteria always show better power output capacity than those with single bacteria due to synergetic effects between species. Here, a rational-designed synthetic three-species alliance system based on Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (the model exoelectrogen), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Lactobacillus plantarum was constructed upon process optimization, the three-species alliance system in MFC delivered a maximum power density of ∼ 207 mW/m 2 by using the glucose as the substrate, which was 2 ∼ 58 times higher than that of MFC inoculated with single species. In addition, the synthetic alliance system could generate electricity from broad substrate spectrum (lactose, saccharose, maltose, arabinose, cellobiose) with enhanced performance. Electrochemical and metabolism analysis indicated inter-species synergetic enhancement on charge transfer, substrate utilization, and biofilm formation was the underlying mechanism for performance improvement in MFC by this synthetic alliance system. In this system, L. plantarum uses glucose to produce lactic acid as the electrogenic substrate and electron donor of S. oneidensis MR-1, and P. aeruginosa uses glucose to produce another electron shuttle phenazine, which can also promote the growth of S. oneidensis MR-1 biofilm and help the alliance system to transfer electrons better. This work demonstrated a new strategy to enhance the MFC performance with a rational designed synthetic bacterial community, which would further renew the toolbox for MFC optimization.

Osmotic energy is a promising clean and sustainable resource for osmotic power generation. However, scaling up reverse electrodialysis technology for osmotic energy harvesting is constrained by limited output power density, primarily due to the dependence of passive ion transport on the concentration gradient. Interfacial solar evaporators yield freshwater and highly concentrated brine. But inevitable heat losses reduce the solar energy utilization efficiency. This study was to construct a multilayer mesh composite membrane with tunable pore sizes via Ti 4 O 7 ceramic fibers and nanocellulose fibers, which adaptable to varying salt concentration environments. Solar radiation can be introduced for seawater desalination coupled with the osmotic energy conversion process to achieve more efficient solar energy utilization. The nanoconfined domains within the multilayer composite membrane enable an efficient interfacial solar water evaporation at a rate of 5.97 kg m −2 h −1 . The effective utilization of heat conduction energy losses elevates the osmosis power generation density to 7.60 W m −2 , which is increased by 198 % compared to conventional device models. This provides a novel design approach for applying ceramic fibers in osmosis power generation and for developing efficient, integrated freshwater-electricity cogeneration systems.

Moisture-enabled electricity generator (MEG) technology converts energy from the environment into green electricity by exploiting the interaction between atmospheric moisture and hydrophilic materials and has the advantages of a simple device structure, small geographical and temporal constraints, and environmental friendliness; therefore, it has great application value in serving as a power source for portable electronic devices. However, the high output performance of most MEG devices is dependent on high ambient relative humidity (RH), and current MEG technologies tend to be poorly flexible and lack wearability, which severely pose a barrier to their practical utilization. Here, we have developed a high-performance bilayer MEG with exceptional environmental adaptability and stretchability. By rationally combining Ti3C2Tx MXene-loaded cotton knitted fabrics (MC) and a stretchable double-network ionic hydrogel (IH) to form the MXene/cotton-ionic hydrogel MEG (MCIH-MEG), the MCIH-MEG with 230% stretchable capacity can continuously provide an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.5 V and a short-circuit current (Isc) of 50 μA, which stem from the continuous water evaporation within the device and fast capillary water flow on MXene nanosheets, as well as redox reactions at the electrodes, which can achieve good electrical performance across a wide range of temperatures (0–80 °C) and RH levels (20–95%). Due to its flexibility, stable electrical output, and sensitivity to external stimuli, MCIH-MEG can be employed in the fabrication of self-powered sensors to detect simple weight changes or even complex gesture changes and in the construction of self-powered smart masks for respiratory monitoring.

Evaporative hydrovoltaic generators hold significant potential for alleviating water-energy crisis, but low output voltage configurations due to the slow phase transition rate of water molecules and the intricate nature of integration limit their applications. Herein, a lotus-inspired interfacial evaporation-driven hydrovoltaic generators (IEHVG) is developed for efficient generation of water vapor and electricity from seawater instead of freshwater and achieves an ultrahigh voltage output higher than 100-volt level through forested IEHVG integration. The biomimetic hydrogel is developed with specific liquid transport channels, graphene quantum dots/MXene nanocomposites, and gradient hydrophobic interface for highly enhanced photothermal evaporation and electricity generation by mimicking the transpiration process of a “stems-leaves of lotus”. The synergistic thermodiffusion effect leads to the output power density of IEHVG reaches up to 45.6 µW cm −2 and can power electronic devices or charge commercial supercapacitors. The freshwater-electricity cogeneration integrated system consisting of 192 IEHVG units can harvest a record-breaking voltage reaching 105 V and a high freshwater harvesting rate up to 2.0 L m −2 h −1 from seawater in a well-lit outdoor area. This work demonstrates that IEHVG offers a novel concept for modular freshwater and high-voltage power sources access on offshore work platforms.
