Highly stretchable, magnetic responsive, shape memory polymer composites via digital light processing 3D printing: Synthesis, characterization and applications

Dingpeng Peng,Zean lin,Dhandapani Kuzhandaivel,Xiaowen Pu,Lixin Wu,Zixiang Weng

Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) have emerged as a promising class of intelligent materials because of their unique ability to respond to external stimuli. The proposed method for fabricating magnetic shape-memory polymer composites (DLP-M-SMPs) using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology represents a significant advancement in this field. By combining the shape memory properties of SMPs with their magnetic responsiveness, these composites can overcome the limitations of traditional thermally driven SMPs, such as their narrow operating temperature ranges and poor adaptability to harsh environments. The DLP-M-SMPs developed in this study demonstrated remarkable mechanical properties and shape-memory performance. With a high elongation at break of 760 % at room temperature, these materials exhibit exceptional flexibility and durability. Shape fixation rates exceeding 96 % and shape recovery rates exceeding 99 % indicate their ability to reliably maintain and recover programmed shapes. Furthermore, the successful 3D printing of complex structures capable of shape recovery under magnetic actuation demonstrated the versatility and potential of these materials for various applications. This innovative approach for fabricating high-resolution, high-performance magnetic shape-memory materials opens up new possibilities in fields such as flexible robotics and biomedical engineering, where precise control and adaptability are crucial.

Reconfigurable Magnetic Liquid Metal Microrobots: A Regenerable Solution for the Capture and Removal of Micro/Nanoplastics

Xianghua Wu,Xia Peng,Long Ren,Jianguo Guan,Martin Pumera

The pervasive presence of micro/nanoplastics in the environment is a significant threat to ecosystems and human health, demanding effective remediation strategies. Traditional methods for extracting these pollutants from water are often inadequate, typically leaving environmentally harmful residues. In response, this work introduces an innovative approach using reconfigurable and regenerable liquid metal microrobots (LiquidBots) that are magnetically driven to actively sequester micro/nanoplastics from aquatic environments. These LiquidBots utilize a coating of gallium oxide for enhanced adhesion and electrostatic interaction to capture over 80% of nanoplastics present in the solution. Additionally, the LiquidBots can be easily regenerated through sonication, which dislodges captured nanoplastics, allowing the microrobots to be reused. This novel technology offers a highly efficient, adaptable, and sustainable solution to combat the micro/nanoplastic pollution crisis.

In-capillary aptamer-functionalized dispersive solid-phase microextraction for dynamic transfer enrichment and miniature mass spectrometry analysis: A magnetically driven capture-and-release strategy

Linsen Li,Ying Zhang,Liping Zhao,Yueguang Lv,Feng Qu,Qiang Ma

The rapid on-site mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of biofluids is of immense significance for point-of-care scenarios. In this study, an innovative magnetically driven capture-and-release strategy for in-capillary cyclical transfer enrichment of analytes of interest is reported. A dispersive magnetic solid-phase microextraction protocol is developed based on aptamer-functionalized polymer-modified magnetic nanoparticles, enabling specific recognition, fast transportation, and dynamic enrichment of target analytes within the capillary. Furthermore, a dicationic ionic liquid (DIL)-based charge inversion reaction is integrated with extraction nanoelectrospray ionization and miniature MS analysis to achieve significant signal amplification. The sensitivity of the analysis for typical per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances was enhanced by 6.3–28.9 times in the positive ion mode following the DIL-based charge inversion strategy, compared to that in the negative ion mode without any DILs used. The proposed method underwent validation, demonstrating good linearity with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.99, acceptable recoveries ranging from 89.6% to 111.1%, and satisfactory sensitivity with limits of detection and quantitation in the ranges of 0.05–0.2 and 0.2–2 ng/mL, respectively. This methodology demonstrates appealing analytical performance and environmental friendliness, which is of great importance for clinical and point-of-care applications.

Magnetic-driven micro-gear pair fabricated by femtosecond laser writing

Sida Peng,Xiaonan Lei,Shengzhi Sun,Yi Zhu,Jianrong Qiu,Huayong Yang

Gear transmission holds paramount significance for intricate mechanical systems. However, when the size of the driving gear is miniaturized to less than 50 microns, both manufacturing and control meet challenges. Here, a magnetic-driven micro-gear pair (MMGP) and its manipulation strategy are proposed. The MMGP is composed of two micro-gears fabricated by the two-photon polymerization (TPP) and its manipulation strategy depends on the gear engagement. The driving gear was processed with a magnetic photoresist and can rotate stably with a rapid rotation response (<100 ms) under the control of an external magnetic field. The driven gear can be driven by the driving gear through the meshing relationship of the gear teeth. As a proof of concept, number counters and the delivery of drugs are achieved by specially designed MMGPs. This development establishes a pivotal foundation for micro-gear transmission in complex intelligent systems, microfluid operation, and biological manipulation. Biodegradable Magnetic Hydrogel Robot with Multimodal Locomotion for Targeted Cargo Delivery

Xi Chen,Chenyao Tian,Hao Zhang,Hui Xie

Recent strides in the development of untethered miniature robots have shown the advantages of diverse actuation methods, flexible maneuverability, and precise locomotion control, which has made miniature robots attractive for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery, and disease diagnosis. However, biocompatibility and environmental adaptability are among the challenges for further in vivo applications of miniature robots due to the sophisticated physiological environment. Herein, we propose a biodegradable magnetic hydrogel robot (BMHR) that possesses precise locomotion with four stable motion modes, namely tumbling mode, precession mode, spinning-XY mode, and spinning-Z mode. Using a homemade vision-guided magnetic driving system, the BMHR can achieve flexible conversion between the different motion modes to cope with changes in complex environments, and its superior ability to cross obstacles is demonstrated. In addition, the transformation mechanism between different motion modes is analyzed and simulated. Benefiting from the diverse motion modes, the proposed BMHR has promising applications in drug delivery, showing remarkable effectiveness in targeted cargo delivery. The BMHR’s biocompatible property, multimodal locomotion, and functionality with drug-loaded particles can provide a new perspective to combine miniature robots with biomedical applications.

Design and Preparation of Magnetism-Driven Intelligent Hydrogel Actuators

Y.-J. Chang,Q. Zhou,W.-H. Hou,Y.-H. Liang,L. Ren,D.-H. Sun,L.-Q. Ren

Novel kinds of magnetism-driven poly N,N-dimethylacrylamide bilayer intelligent hydrogels with various nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) contents were prepared successfully via one-step insitu free radical polymerization. The bilayer hydrogels possessed high mechanical strength, efficient swelling and steady magnetic response. With the increase of nanofibrillated cellulose content, the crosslinking density of the hydrogels increased, leading to the decrease of swelling rate and increase of mechanical strength and swelling bending degree of hydrogel actuators, respectively. Fe 3 O 4 particles existed tightly on the micropore surfaces of the hydrogels, which built the function base of magnetic response of hydrogel actuators. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 was irrelevant to the variation of crosslinking density. The bilayer structure exhibited high bonding strength. Based on intelligent responsive properties, bilayer hydrogels were designed as soft magnetism-driven actuators, realizing capture and transportation properties and provided material candidates for soft robots.

Bioinspired claw-engaged and biolubricated swimming microrobots creating active retention in blood vessels

Tianlong Li,Shimin Yu,Bei Sun,Yilong Li,Xinlong Wang,Yunlu Pan,Chunlei Song,Yukun Ren,Zhanxiang Zhang,Kenneth T. V. Grattan,Zhiguang Wu,Jie Zhao

Swimming microrobots guided in the circulation system offer considerable promise in precision medicine but currently suffer from problems such as limited adhesion to blood vessels, intensive blood flow, and immune system clearance—all reducing the targeted interaction. A swimming microrobot design with clawed geometry, a red blood cell (RBC) membrane–camouflaged surface, and magnetically actuated retention is discussed, allowing better navigation and inspired by the tardigrade’s mechanical claw engagement, coupled to an RBC membrane coating, to minimize blood flow impact. Using clinical intravascular optical coherence tomography in vivo, the microrobots’ activity and dynamics in a rabbit jugular vein was monitored, illustrating very effective magnetic propulsion, even against a flow of ~2.1 cm/s, comparable with rabbit blood flow characteristics. The equivalent friction coefficient with magnetically actuated retention is elevated ~24-fold, compared to magnetic microspheres, achieving active retention at 3.2 cm/s, for >36 hours, showing considerable promise across biomedical applications.

Photothermal and Magnetic Actuation of Multimodal PNIPAM Hydrogel-Based Soft Robots

Xiangyu Teng,Zhizheng Gao,Xuehao Feng,Shuliang Zhu,Wenguang Yang

Soft robot motion performance has long been a core focus in scientific research. This study investigates the motion capabilities of soft robots constructed using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels, with key innovations in material design and functional enhancement. By optimizing the hydrogel formulation and incorporating molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) to endow it with photothermal response properties, the material achieves muscle-like controllable contraction and expansion deformation—a critical breakthrough in mimicking biological motion mechanics. Building on this material advancement, the research team developed a series of soft robotic prototypes to systematically explore the hydrogel’s motion characteristics. A flytrap-inspired soft robot demonstrates rapid opening–closing movements, replicating the swift responsiveness of natural carnivorous plants. For terrestrial locomotion, a hexapod crawling robot utilizes the photo-induced stretch-recovery mechanism of both horizontally configured and pre-bent feet to achieve stable directional propulsion. Most notably, a magnetically driven rolling robot integrates magnetic units to realize versatile multimodal movement: it achieves a stable rolling speed of 1.8 cm/s across flat surfaces and can surmount obstacles up to 1.5 times its own body size. This work not only validates the strong potential of PNIPAM hydrogel-based soft robots in executing complex motion tasks but also provides valuable new insights for the development of multimodal soft robotic systems, paving the way for future innovations in adaptive and bio-inspired robotics.

Magnetic-Driven Hydrogel Microrobots Selectively Enhance Synthetic Lethality in MTAP-Deleted Osteosarcoma

Haoran Mu,Chenlu Liu,Qi Zhang,Huanliang Meng,Shimin Yu,Ke Zeng,Jing Han,Xinmeng Jin,Shi Shi,Peiyao Yu,Tianlong Li,Jing Xu,Yingqi Hua

Background: Drugs based on synthetic lethality have advantages such as inhibiting tumor growth and affecting normal tissue in vivo . However, specific targets for osteosarcoma have not been acknowledged yet. In this study, a non-targeted but controllable drug delivery system has been applied to selectively enhance synthetic lethality in osteosarcoma in vitro , using the magnetic-driven hydrogel microrobots. Methods: In this study, EPZ015666, a PRMT5 inhibitor, was selected as the synthetic lethality drug. Then, the drug was carried by hydrogel microrobots containing Fe 3 O 4 . Morphological characteristics of the microrobots were detected using electron microscopy. In vitro drug effect was detected by the CCK-8 assay kit, Western blotting, etc. Swimming of microrobots was observed by a timing microscope. Selective inhibition was verified by cultured tumors in an increasing magnetic field. Results: Genomic mutation of MTAP deletion occurred commonly in pan-cancer in the TCGA database (nearly 10.00%) and in osteosarcoma in the TARGET database (23.86%). HOS and its derivatives, 143B and HOS/MNNG, were detected by MTAP deletion according to the CCLE database and RT-PCR. EPZ015666, the PRMT5 inhibitor, could reduce the SDMA modification and inhibition of tumor growth of 143B and HOS/MNNG. The hydrogel microrobot drug delivery system was synthesized, and the drug was stained by rhodamine. The microrobots were powered actively by a magnetic field. A simulation of the selected inhibition of microrobots was performed and lower cell viability of tumor cells was detected by adding a high dose of microrobots. Conclusion: Our magnetic-driven drug delivery system could carry synthetic lethality drugs. Meanwhile, the selective inhibition of this system could be easily controlled by programming the strength of the magnetic field.

Long-span delivery of differentiable hybrid robots for restoration of neural connections

Jie Shen,Yun Wang,Min Yao,Shubo Liu,Zhiguang Guo,Li Zhang,Ben Wang

Lumbar puncture is a minimally invasive technique for delivering drugs into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, its effectiveness is limited by the spine’s extensive length and the narrow, complex CSF spaces, which hinder efficient passive diffusion of therapeutic agents. Here, we have engineered a differentiable stem cell-assembled soft robot (SCASR) by using a three-dimensional self-assembly process in liquid marbles. These biologically viable robots can interface with the tissues inside the CSF, adapting to the complex surroundings while navigating. With X-ray imaging and magnetic actuation, the SCASRs can be guided toward targeted regions. The SCASRs autonomously disassemble into individual cells, which then differentiate into neural cells to facilitate the restoration of neural connections, thereby aiding the recovery of paralyzed lower limbs. The proposed strategy provides an imaging-based therapeutic system for nerve injury, enabling accessibility of hard-to-reach spinal regions and facilitating efficient therapy in minimally invasive manner, by means of soft microrobots.

Jiang Fengqi,Zheng Qiuyan,Zhao Qingsong,Qi Zijuan,Wu Di,Li Wenzhong,Wu Xiaoke,Han Conghui

Research and development in the field of micro/nano-robots have made significant progress in the past, especially in the field of clinical medicine, where further research may lead to many revolutionary achievements. Through the research and experiment of microrobots, a controllable drug delivery system will be realized, which will solve many problems in drug treatment. In this work, we design and study the ability of magnetic-driven hydrogel microrobots to carry Lycorine hydrochloride (LH) to inhibit colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. We have successfully designed a magnetic field driven, biocompatible drug carrying hydrogel microsphere robot with Fe3O4 particles inside, which can achieve magnetic field response, and confirmed that it can transport drug through fluorescence microscope. We have successfully demonstrated the motion mode of hydrogel microrobots driven by a rotating external magnetic field. This driving method allows the microrobots to move in a precise and controllable manner, providing tremendous potential for their use in various applications. Finally, we selected drug LH and loaded it into the hydrogel microrobot for a series of experiments. LH significantly inhibited CRC cells proliferation in a dose- and time-dependent manner. LH inhibited the proliferation, mobility of CRC cells and induced apoptosis. This delivery system can significantly improve the therapeutic effect of drugs on tumors.

Photocatalytic microrobots for treating bacterial infections deep within sinuses

Haidong Yu,Xurui Liu,Yabin Zhang,Jie Shen,Xijun Liu,Shubo Liu,Xiangyu Wang,Bonan Sun,Huihui Du,Lin Xu,Bingsuo Zou,Jianning Ding,Qingsong Xu,Li Zhang,Ben Wang

Microrobotic techniques are promising for treating biofilm infections located deep within the human body. However, the presence of highly viscous pus presents a formidable biological barrier, severely restricting targeted and minimally invasive treatments. In addition, conventional antibacterial agents exhibit limited payload integration with microrobotic systems, further compromising therapeutic efficiency. In this study, we propose a photocatalytic microrobot through a magnetically guided, optical fiber–assisted therapeutic platform specifically designed to treat bacterial infections in deep mucosal cavities. The microrobots comprising copper (Cu) single atom–doped bismuth oxoiodide (BiOI), termed CBMRs, can be guided and tracked by real-time x-ray imaging. Under external magnetic actuation, the illuminated region from the magnetically guided optical fiber synchronously follows the CBMR swarm, enabling effective antibacterial action at targeted infection sites. Upon continuous visible-light irradiation, the resultant photothermal effect substantially reduces the viscosity of pus on inflamed mucosal tissues, enhancing the penetration capability of the CBMR swarm by more than threefold compared with baseline conditions. Concurrently, atomic-level design of CBMRs facilitates robust generation of reactive oxygen species, enabling efficient biofilm disruption and reductions in bacterial viability. We validated the effectiveness of this integrated optical fiber–assisted microrobotic platform in a rabbit sinusitis model in vivo, demonstrating its potential for clinically relevant infection therapy.
