Reactive flame retardant with core-shell structure and its flame retardancy in rigid polyurethane foam

Fubin Luo,Kun Wu,Yinwen Li,Jian Zheng,Huilong Guo,Mangeng Lu

With a shell of poly (methyl methacrylate-co-hydroxyl ethyl acrylate) (PMMA-HA), microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MHAPP) is prepared by in situ polymerization. The core-shell structure of the reactive flame retardant (FR) is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The results of water leaching rate and water contact angle measurements show that ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is well coated by a hydrophobic shell. Due to the presence of active groups (–OH) and hydrophobic groups (–CH 3 ) in shell, MHAPP exhibits better compatibility, flame retardancy, and water resistance compared with neat ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in rigid polyurethane foam (PU). Compression strength of PU/MHAPP with suitable loading is higher than that of PU/APP and PU, the reason is that the active groups in shell can improve the compatibility of MHAPP in PU composite. From thermal stability and residue analysis, it can be seen that the presence of reactive flame retardant shows positive effect on thermal stability of PU composite at high temperature, results also indicate that MHAPP can promote the carbonization formation efficiency of PU composite during combustion process compared with APP. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Innovative flame-retardant systems for rigid polyurethane foam: Synergistic effects of nitrogen and phosphorus polyols

Xiaoyan Sun,Lisha Deng,Jiankun Fu,Ziheng Zhao,Chunfan Xu,Min Hao,Madeleine Bussemaker,Juncheng Jiang,Lian X. Liu,Ru Zhou

Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) is widely used for building insulation. However, RPUF has significant safety concerns due to its flammability. It ignites easily, burns rapidly, and releases substantial heat and toxic smoke in a short time. Researchers have explored various additive flame retardants as a solution. However, these additives often weaken the mechanical strength of RPUF, leading to unsatisfactory performance. In this study, we investigated for the first time the application of nitrogen-containing polyols synthesized from the reaction of melamine and formaldehyde, and phosphorus-containing polyols produced from the reaction of trimethyl phosphate and 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)ethane in flame-retardant RPUF. These polyols were used in a reactive flame-retardant strategy for RPUF. This approach improved the effectiveness of the flame retardants. It also minimized the negative impact on the mechanical properties of RPUF. We combined nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing flame-retardant polyols in a 2:1 ratio. This combination significantly improved flame retardancy and thermal stability. The RPUF composites achieved a limiting oxygen index of 27.2 % and a UL-94 V-0 rating. The composites also showed a significant reduction in total heat release and total smoke production by 55.9 % and 65.8 %, respectively, compared to pure RPUF. These improvements are due to a dense residual carbon layer formed during combustion. This layer shields the RPUF matrix from heat and oxygen. Additionally, the composites reduce the concentration of combustible gases in the gas phase, lowering the overall temperature.

High-strength polyurethane-reinforced glass fiber spacer fabric for cost-effective, lightweight, and high-temperature insulation applications

Longze Chen,Pengfei Xiang,Hao Tong,Sicheng Xin,Jiahao He,Wenbin Li,Chong He

Compared to dense glass fiber textiles, 3D spacer inorganic glass fiber fabrics offer significant advantages in terms of lightweight design, superior thermal insulation, and high-temperature resistance. However, intricate weaving process, high manufacturing costs, and limited strength of spacer fabrics pose significant challenges to their broader application. Herein, a polyurethane foam-reinforced glass fiber spacer fabric (GSFP) was developed to address these issues. An efficient fabrication strategy, encompassing glass fiber preparation, weaving, and structural refinement, was first developed to fabricate spacer glass fabrics with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 12 cm. Subsequently, the spacer glass fabric structure was resin reinforced using a hand lay-up technique and the infusion of hollow glass microsphere-reinforced polyurethane foam. With a 10 % microsphere concentration, polyurethane foam achieved an optimal balance between mechanical strength and thermal insulation. GSFP demonstrated a 7.1 % enhancement in mechanical performance and an 18 % improvement in thermal insulation properties. After five compression cycles, GSFP embedded with 10 % glass microspheres retained 85 % of its compressive strength. With its light weight, superior strength, thermal insulation, GSFP holds promise for sustained use in high-pressure and high-temperature environments.

Tung oil-derived polyurethane composite foams based on dual dynamic phenol-carbamate exchange with desirable mechanical properties, flame retardancy and recyclability

Baozheng Zhao,Fei Song,Zheng Pan,Yijiao Xue,Linfeng Tian,Tiancheng Zhang,Li Tan,Rui Yang,Yonghong Zhou,Meng Zhang

At present, thermoset polyurethane foams were mainly derived from petroleum-based resources and faced inherent challenges such as difficulty in recycling and fire hazard. In this study, tung oil and catechol were used to prepare tung oil-derived polyphenols via Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. These polyphenols were combined with isocyanate to synthesize tung oil-derived polyurethane (TPU) foam. With the presence of dual dynamically cross-linked phenol-carbamate bonds, the TPU foam could be hot-pressed several times into a smooth and homogeneous TPU film. To improve the fire resistance and compressive strength of TPU foam, phytic acid functionalized metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-NH 2 @PA) flame retardants were successfully synthesized by one-pot solvothermal method. By adding 20 wt% of flame retardants, the TPU composite foams achieved a UL-94 V-0 flammability rating with a limiting oxygen index of 28.1 vol%. The total heat release, total smoke release, CO production and CO 2 production of the TPU composite foams were reduced by 43.1 %, 57.8 %, 63.6 % and 62.1 %, respectively, compared to the pure TPU foam. Furthermore, the compressive strength of the TPU composite foam continued to increase with increasing flame retardants content, reaching a maximum of 0.55 MPa. Importantly, the introduction of the flame retardants didn't affect the hot-press recycling performance of the TPU foam, but instead improved the tensile strength and flame retardancy of the recycled TPU film. This work paved the way to produce bio-based PU foam with excellent flame retardancy and recyclability.

Preparation and Study of Highly Hydrophobic and Strongly Oleophilic Reticulated Polyurethane Foam Surface Modified With Polydopamine and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Longyu Hao,Qiang Wang,Kuan Liang,Wanli Li,Hao Wei

Crude oil spills pose a significant pollution threat to the marine environment. Effective cleanup methods tailored for high-viscosity oil spills are essential. This study initially investigated the influence of pore size on the water and oil absorption capacities of reticulated polyurethane foam (PUF). Comparative experiments conducted with five distinct pore sizes ranging from 0.9 to 2.27 mm revealed that PUF with a pore size of 1.17 mm exhibited optimal adsorption performance for high-viscosity heavy oil (with an adsorption capacity of 38.0 g/g), albeit accompanied by a notable defect in water absorption (water absorption rate of 22.1 g/g). To address the poor hydrophobicity of the 1.17 mm PUF, modifications were introduced using polydopamine (PDA) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) to develop a hydrophobic–oleophilic PUF@PDA-POSS composite material. The results indicated a 69.6% reduction in water absorption capacity for PUF@PDA-POSS compared to pure PUF (decreasing to 6.71 g/g), while the heavy oil adsorption capacity remained unchanged (at 39.1 g/g). After undergoing 10 adsorption–cleaning–regeneration cycles, PUF@PDA-POSS maintained over 90% of its initial adsorption performance, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This material combines high hydrophobicity, strong oil absorption capacity, environmental friendliness, and durability, thereby possessing significant application value in oil–water separation and marine oil spill remediation.

One-Step Synthesis of Carbon-Hybridized ZnO on Polymeric Foams by Atomic Layer Deposition for Efficient Absorption of Oils from Water

Sen Xiong,Yang Yang,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Yong Wang

Reusable absorbents with high absorption capacity, good selectivity, and low cost are highly demanded for efficient removal of oil spills and organic leakages from water. We discover that ZnO produced by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is hybridized with carbon moieties, and consequently exhibits an appreciable hydrophobicity. By taking this advantage, we develop a “dry” process to produce high-performance oil absorbents. Originally amphiphilic polymeric foams are directly turned into strongly hydrophobic oil absorbents simply by ALD of ZnO and exhibit excellent absorption capacity, selectivity and reusability. Such absorption capacities and reusability are better than most foam-based oil absorbents. Surprisingly, we find that ALD-deposited ZnO can reverse the wettability of polymeric foams depending on the foam porosities. This ALD-enabled surface functionalization is expected to find important applications in the synthesis of many other interfacial materials.

Superhydrophobic Self-Supporting BiOBr Aerogel for Wastewater Purification

Jie Yue,Guochang Wen,Guina Ren,Shaowang Tang,Bo Ge,Limin Zhao,Xin Shao

This research was focused on the raw material level construction of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) catalysis-loaded 3D cross-linked network polyurethane (PU) foam via the in situ polymerization method. After modification of superhydrophobic polydivinylbenzene nanoparticles, the PU foam possessed excellent superhydrophobic stability. The larger selective absorption oil phase capacity depended on its macroporous structure, and the existence of catalyst BiOBr (the band gap energy was about 2.57 eV) among the PU foam played a crucial role in degrading water-soluble contaminants under visible light irradiation. In this article, the photocatalytic experiment results verify that it has remarkable recycle degradation ability (the degradation efficiency can reach ∼97%) and the capture experiments indicate that the uppermost active species is h+.

Combustion and Thermal Properties of Flame Retardant Polyurethane Foam With Ammonium Polyphosphate Synergized by Phosphomolybdic Acid

Xu Zhirong,Xu Zihui,Tao Ran,Mao Liangchen,Zhan Jing,Xiao Junfeng,Yu Tao

Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) as a synergist was added into polyurethane (PU) rigid foam with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to improve its flame retardancy and thermal stability. The combustion performance of PU was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94, and a cone calorimeter. The thermal degradation behavior of PU was determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and thermogravimetric infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR). Experimental results showed that the introduction of PMA could further improve the flame retardant performance of PU/APP composites and significantly increase the amount of carbon residue at high temperatures. Adding 3wt% PMA to PU containing 12wt% APP could make the foam pass UL-94 V-0, increase the carbon residue at 800°C by 69.16% in the air atmosphere, and decrease the THR by 24.62% compared to those of PU/15APP. TG-IR results showed that the presence of PMA reduced the production of small-molecule gas-phase products. As for the mechanical properties of PU composites, the addition of PMA influences their density and compressive strength obviously. The results suggest that PMA and APP have good synergistic flame retardancy on PU and can reduce its fire risk.

Inorganic-organic hybrid coatings from tea polyphenols and laponite to improve the fire safety of flexible polyurethane foams

Qi Jiang,Ping Li,Bin Wang,Jiu-Hua She,Yun Liu,Ping Zhu

Inorganic-organic hybrid coatings prepared via an impregnation assembly of eco-friendly materials exhibited dramatically flame-retardant properties on flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF). A nickel-complex of tea polyphenols (TP-Ni) was synthesized, and TP-Ni and laponite (LAP) were coated on the surface of FPUF. LAP/TP-Ni can be homogeneously dispersed on the surface of FPUF. Moreover, the melt-dripping phenomenon of 1LAP/4TP-Ni/FPUF was completely inhibited during the vertical flame test (UL-94) with 41.2 wt% weight gain, and it showed self-extinguished behaviors at once and passed the UL-94 V-0 rating. Additionally, the values of peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate of 1LAP/4TP-Ni/FPUF were reduced by 71.6% and 60.9%, compared with the control. The content of gaseous toxic substances, such as CO and NCO-containing compounds, was also decreased, indicating the effect of TP-Ni/LAP on the toxicity suppression of flame-retardant FPUF. Encouragingly, the coatings deteriorated the tensile property of FPUF inconspicuously. Interestingly, the coatings do not contain traditional flame retardant elements, which offers an innovative approach for designing flame retardants. Thus, these inorganic-organic hybrid coatings show the promising potential to decrease the fire risk of FPUF.

Fabrication of intrinsic flame-retarding rigid polyurethane foam with enhanced compressive strength and good thermal insulation

Ying-Ming Li,Wen-Juan Hu,Shuang-Lin Hu,Yi-Ran Li,Dan-Ping Zhu,De-Yi Wang

The rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) with excellent flame retardancy, high compressive strength and good thermal insulation performance is of great importance to its widely application, especially the application in high-rise building exterior wall materials. In this work, two kinds of flame-retarding polyols (DADP and APDP) containing phosphorus and nitrogen elements were prepared via a simple salinization reaction and reacted into RPUF chains. When only 15 wt% of APDP was incorporated, the material passed the UL-94 V-0 rating with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 24.5% while 20 wt% of DADP incorporated to realize the same flame-retarding effect. For the RPUF/APDP 15 , the peak heat release rate (PHRR) decreased by 28.2% comparing to the neat RPUF and the fire growth rate (FIGRA) was the lowest 8.3, indicating the lowest flame spread speed among all the flame-retarding RPUF. The compressive strength of the RPUF/APDP 15 material increased by 41.8% comparing to that of neat RPUF, mainly causing by the good compatibility and the enhancement of hardness of polyurethane via the benzene ring. Moreover, it was concluded that the gas-phase mechanism dominated in enhancing the flame-retarding effect for the RPUF material, and the APDP showed a higher flame-retarding effect with a higher content of phosphorus and nitrogen elements than that of DADP.

Synthesis of tung oil-based polyphenols via phosphotungstic acid loaded tung meal-based carbon-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation: A smart way to access renewable bio-based polyurethanes

Baozheng Zhao,Fei Song,Qi Zhao,Zheng Pan,Yijiao Xue,Guodong Feng,Meng Zhang,Yonghong Zhou

Achieving green preparation and economical recycling of polyurethane (PU) foams while considering environmental protection and comprehensive resource utilization is a significant challenge. Herein, we have proposed an integrated utilization strategy of tung oil fruit to design tung oil-based PU (TPU) foams with malleability and thermal processability. Phosphotungstic acid was first loaded onto tung meal-based carbon derived from the solid microwave carbonization of waste tung meal to obtain carbon-based catalysts with a total acid density of up to 2408.4 μmol/g. In the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of tung oil and guaiacol, the carbon-based catalysts show highly catalytic performance and reusability, resulting in the phenolic hydroxyl content of tung oil-based polyphenols reaching 3.05 mmol/g. The TPU foams containing phenol-carbamate bonds were prepared from tung oil-based polyphenols, which can be processed into TPU films through thermal compression molding. The recycled TPU films show tunable mechanical properties and can be further reprocessed. We have also produced carbon fiber-reinforced composites with TPU as the matrix, which have good mechanical properties and can be sustainably recycled. This research aims to produce closed-loop recycling-oriented TPU foams using forest resources as raw materials while adequately using waste to achieve green production processes.

Construction of superhydrophobic flexible polyurethane with dual nano-enhancement effect for solar-assisted high-viscosity oil cleanup and oil-water separation

Lian Yin,Mengqing Zhou,Yongqian Shi,Keqing Zhou

Rapid and safe implementation of viscous crude oil cleanup is still a daunting challenge. Superhydrophobic materials are outstanding candidates for handling solvent spills, but are limited to recovering low viscosity oil and organic solvents. Hence, a polyurethane foam (PMRP-PU) integrating superelasticity, dual solar-responsive and fire resistance was fabricated by blending MXene and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) via self-foaming method. The surface temperature of the PMRP-PU reached 105 °C after simulated sunlight irradiation for 600 s. PMRP-PU had outstanding adsorption performance for low-viscosity oil and organic solvent (∼70.1 g/g) at room temperature, and the adsorption capacity of high-viscosity oil was also increased by 202.1 % compared with pure PU. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of PMRP-PU-3 remained at 92.7 % of the original level after 20 cycles of experiments. Excellent acid and alkali resistance and high temperature stability also greatly improved the environmental adaptability of the foam. Contrary to the flammability of pure PU, the peak heat release rate and total heat release of PMRP-PU-3 were decreased by 22.6 % and 25.2 %, respectively, and the melt dripping phenomenon disappeared during burning, exhibiting excellent fire safety. Briefly, this polyurethane foam can be repeatedly used for oil spill cleaning, and has a broad development prospect in the field of oil-water separation.
