Corrosion resistance self-healing coating with bioinspired interfacial structure

Hongli Tian,Yuchao Zhan,Limei Tian,Jiyu Sun

Epoxy coatings peel from substrates when exposed to strong salt spray in marine environments due to the hydrophilic nature of these coatings. In this study, based on the integration of the coating and interface, a corrosion resistant self-healing coating with strong adhesion was formulated using nanocapsules of calcium alginate loaded with tung oil (TO@CA), and a bioinspired and silanized interface was prepared. Bionic interfaces were fabricated based on the strong wet adhesion of the tree frog and inspired by the microstructure of its toe pads. The EIS and pull-off testing results showed that relative to other coatings, the composite coating had the strongest adhesion and provided protection for the longest time. The results of this study have potential application value for improving the adhesion of epoxy coatings in marine environments.

Rational design of photothermally activated self-healing coating with UV resistance towards smart corrosion protection

Xin Lai,Jianfeng Hu,Jinqing Qu

The self-healing coating loaded with corrosion inhibitors has been proven to protect metals against harsh corrosive environments . However, the complex stimulation methods and inability to resist ultraviolet (UV) radiation greatly limit the further application of these coatings in intelligent corrosion protection . In this work, a self-healing epoxy (EP) coating activated by sunlight with photothermal conversion and UV resistance performances is developed by incorporating benzotriazole (BTA) and polydopamine-modified cerium oxide (mCeO 2 ) loaded poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microspheres . BTA@PCL/mCeO 2 microspheres can not only endow composite coating with excellent anti-corrosion capability (|Z| 0.01Hz value of 1.97 × 10 9  Ω∙cm 2 ) but also achieve efficient photothermal self-healing under sunlight irradiation of 200 mW/cm 2 for 10 min. Based on the results of scanning electrochemical microscopy , the healing efficiency of composite coatings on scratched areas reaches 92.13 % after immersion for 24 h, which is much higher than 5.27 % of pure EP coatings. Profited from the UV absorption and free radical scavenging ability of BTA@PCL/mCeO 2 microspheres, the composite coatings still maintain stabilized impedance modulus values (3.62 × 10 8  Ω·cm 2 ) after 120 h of UV exposure. Therefore, this work offers a promising candidate for long-term corrosion protection under harsh application conditions.

Achieving anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling dual-function self-healing coating by natural carrier attapulgite loading with 2-Undecylimidazoline

Yinghao Wu,Jinming Wei,Xiaolu Shi,Wenjie Zhao

In the marine environment, the protective coatings face serious corrosion and biofouling problem, limitations, and challenges that made self-healing coatings unable to perform both anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling dual-function at the same time. Here we constructed the corrosion resistance and anti-biofouling self-healing coating by integrating nano-containers into the coating matrix, the 2-Undecylimidazoline (ULM) acted as a corrosion inhibitor and anti-biofouling dual-functional agent which was loaded on the natural container attapulgite (ATP). To obtain high healing efficiency, a fluidity-driven self-healing silicone oil coating was thickened by fibrous ATP to enhance its stability, which played a key role in the self-healing and long-term corrosion resistance. The self-healing time of ULM@ATP reinforced oil coating was 4 s at least in the air and up to 30 s in the 1 M HCl solution. Meanwhile, the ULM@ATP can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of the self-healing coating, with the best effect achieved when the content of ULM@ATP was 5 wt.%. The impedance modulus of ULM@ATP-2 still reached 1.62 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 after 480 immersion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, which is 3 orders of magnitude high than pure Oil coating (2.17 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 ). The restructure of the ATP network and the release of ULM could largely inhibit the corrosion of metal. The continuous open circuit potential of the composite coating performed the potentially infinite self-healing capacity. The self-healing performances of the composite coating in strong acid and base solutions exhibited high environmental suitability. This anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling (the surface coverage of adhered chlorella decreased 96.88%) dual-function strategy of self-healing coatings could be also realized by many other porous nano-materials or function modifications. The self-healing performances of the composite coating in strong acid and base solutions exhibited high environmental suitability. This anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling dual-function strategy of self-healing coatings could be also realized by many other porous nano-materials or function modifications. The rapid response self-healing coating possessed anti-biofouling and active self-healing functions and showed wide application under more service environments.

Self-Healing Superhydrophobic Coatings with Multiphase Repellence Property

Zhongshan Wang,Yuanyuan Hou,Ashish Yadav,Tangjian Chen,Yongling Wu,Changyou Yan,Mingming Liu

Developing versatile, scalable, and durable coatings that repel various matters in different service environments is of great importance for engineered materials applications but remains highly challenging. Here, the mesoporous silica microspheres (HMS) fabricated by the hard template method were utilized as micro-nanocontainers to encapsulate the hydrophobic agent of perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (F13) and the corrosion inhibitor of benzotriazole (BTA), forming the functional microsphere of F-HMS(BTA). Moreover, the synthesized organosilane-modified silica sol adhesive (SMP) and F-HMS(BTA) were further employed as the binder and functional filler to construct a superhydrophobic self-healing coating of SMP@F-HMS(BTA) on various engineering metals through scalable spraying. The prepared coating exhibits good mechanical durability and strong resistance to accretion of multiphase substances including large molecule compounds, liquids, and ice crystals, demonstrating good antifouling and anti-icing properties. Moreover, the coatings possess hydrophobic and anticorrosion self-healing properties owing to the self-migration release of the functional additives in the micro-nanocontainers, showing the “active–passive” synergistic properties mechanism. At a frequency of 0.01 Hz, the charge transfer resistance Rct and the constant phase element Ccpe were measured to be 2.62 × 109 Ω cm2 and 9.63 × 10–10 F cm2, respectively. In addition, the corrosion current density was reduced by 3–5 orders of magnitude, indicating superior corrosion resistance. This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare functional protective coatings for a wide range of applications in addressing adhesion and corrosion issues.

Self-healing superhydrophobic anti-corrosion coating with dual photo-thermal and pH response for effective anti-icing and de-icing

Pengao Yu,Zongxue Yu,Kexi Liao,Shuangshuang Xia,Kun Li,Jiao Chen,Xiuzhu Zhang

In this study, a self-healing superhydrophobic bilayer coating with dual photothermal and pH response was developed by combining a smart self-healing bottom layer with a superhydrophobic top layer. The composite material (MZT) obtained by combining zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) loaded with corrosion inhibitor AMT (2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole) and Ti 3 C 2 T X nanosheets (MXene) was embedded with a shape memory coating (SMP) as the bottom coating. The bottom coating is photo-thermal as well as pH dual-responsive, enabling smart self-healing. Under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the MXene can effectively heal scratches in the coating by utilizing the photothermal effect. Even after the coating is subjected to severe corrosion, a change in pH will cause ZIF-8 to dissociate and release corrosion inhibitors to further protect the metal. In addition, the stearic acid-modified ZIF-8 combined with MXene to form a top layer coating (MZSA), and a superhydrophobic surface with a photothermal effect was prepared, with a contact angle of 159.3°. Under the irradiation of near-infrared light, it has good anti-icing/de-icing performance. The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that |Z| f=0.01 Hz of the composite coating was as high as 4.47 × 10 9 Ω⋅cm 2 after 40 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, which was four orders of magnitude higher than that of the SMP coating.

Pickering emulsion-based fabrication of epoxy and amine microcapsules for dual core self-healing coating

Huan Yi,Yonghong Deng,Chaoyang Wang

Facile and efficient encapsulation of epoxy and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) in polyurea (PU) microcapsules are accomplished with Pickering emulsion templates by one-step, interfacial polymerization . The formation of microcapsule is deftly achieved by lightly shaking Pickering emulsions. The whole process is time andenergy saving hardly with any waste and residual. Epoxy microcapsules keep the spherical shape with core content of more than 90 wt%. Amine microcapsules shrink a little for evaporation of water and the conserved TEPA after air-dried is 82.1 wt%. The shell walls of two microcapsules are about 1 μm. With the protection of PU shells, both microcapsules exhibit excellent thermal resistance . Furthermore, self-healing function of epoxy and amine microcapsules is measured by incorporating microcapsules into epoxy coating , and tested by brine-submersion corrosion-accelerating experiment. The dual core self-healing coatings demonstrate excellent self-repairing performance with the crack of embedded microcapsules and reaction between epoxy and amine. The core materials can outflow from microcapsules and form isolations for metal substrate from corrosion hazard, therefore, make for good self-repairing and preserving function of the self-healing coating.

Self-repairing and anti-fouling performance of anticorrosive coating in marine environment

Xiao Wu,Chao Yang,Lingli Wu,Chuchu Zhang,Gan Cui,Yanping Xin

Microcrack damage repair and microbial contamination prevention are two major challenges for anti-corrosion coatings on the surfaces of underwater installations. In this study, water-triggered self-healing microcapsules were combined with low-surface-energy fluoropolymers to prepare a bifunctional anti-corrosion coating with underwater self-healing and bio-fouling properties. The results showed that the prepared microcapsules had good mechanical, thermal, and environmental stability, with an average diameter of 153 μm and an encapsulation rate of 66.7%. When the microcapsule content in the coating was 8 wt%, the microcapsule dispersion performance and healing barrier effect of the composite coating were optimal, and the repair efficiency reached 81.6%. Furthermore, compared with the coating without microcapsules or graft fluoropolymers (PFG), the sample denoted as PFG18/4/IPDI-MC/ER showed the largest surface water contact angle and had the best protein inhibition rate of 87% when using bovine hemoglobin to detect the protein adsorption concentration on the coating surface.

Fabrication of amphiphilic self-healing coatings with high mechanical properties and their antifouling performance

Ziyuan Liu,Chunju He

A self-healing antifouling coating with excellent mechanical strength was prepared via a simple “one-step” method. A series of well-designed amphiphilic block copolymer polydimethylsiloxane-poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMS-PDMAEMA) synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization was introduced to the self-healing polydimethylsiloxane-based polyurethane (PDMS-PU) system, which was further zwitterionized during solidification. The slight swelling resulting from zwitterionic segments promoted the contact fusion rate of the mechanically damaged parts, which improved the underwater self-healing ability of the resulting coating. The PDMS segments in both amphiphilic polymer and PU were entangled with each other to form a semi-interpenetrating network while the zwitterionic segments migrated externally when being immersed underwater, thus a micro-phase separation structure was obtained for antifouling coating. Qualitative and quantitative tests have also proved that the coating can significantly resist the adhesion of proteins (156 μg/cm 2 vs 14 μg/cm 2 ) and marine microorganisms (425 × 10 3 n/cm 2 vs 12 × 10 3 n/cm 2 ). In addition, the organically modified montmorillonite (MMT) effectively improved the coating's mechanical properties via coordination bonding, as the resulting coating's fracture strength was increased by 50 % compared with the initial PU coating. In this study, an inherent problem in underwater self-healing antifouling coatings is solved perfectly, that is to achieve self-healing properties without loss of mechanical properties, which provides inspiration for the research and development of novel self-healing antifouling coatings.

Durable self-healing coating system based on pH-responsive core-shell nanostructures

Xiaochen Liu,Jian Wang,Zheng Wang,Zitong Chen,Dashuai Yan,Meng Zhang,Yanli Wang,Dalei Song,Tao Zhang,Jun Wang

A critical access to high-efficiency anti-corrosion coatings is adding pH-responsive nanocontainers encapsulated with corrosion inhibitors into epoxy resin as it endows the composite coating with significant active long-term corrosion protection . Here, two self-healing coating systems (I-PBZ-EP and II-PBZ-EP) were constructed based on epoxy coating (EP) and benzotriazole-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) encapsulated with polydopamine (PDA) by one-pot and two-pot methods, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) investigation shows that the low-frequency impedance modulus value (|Z| 0.01Hz ) of I-PBZ-EP still reaches 2.16 × 10 10  Ω·cm 2 which is the highest among all the coatings after 35 d of immersion. |Z| 0.01Hz of the scratched I-PBZ-EP is 1.10 × 10 5  Ω·cm 2 after 13 h of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, which far surpasses |Z| 0.01Hz of the scratched II-PBZ-EP, exhibiting its excellent self-healing properties. This is because I-PBZ can release more benzotriazole (BTA) (22.5 mg/L and 13.4 mg/L) than II-PBZ (15.8 mg/L and 9.4 mg/L) under acidic and basic conditions to repair the micro-defects. In short, by changing the loading mode of corrosion inhibitors, I-PBZ-EP with a simpler synthesis method manages to provide the long-term anticorrosion protection for the carbon steel substrate.

AgNP Composite Silicone-Based Polymer Self-Healing Antifouling Coatings

Xingda Liu,Jiawen Sun,Jizhou Duan,Kunyan Sui,Xiaofan Zhai,Xia Zhao

Biofouling poses a significant challenge to the marine industry, and silicone anti-biofouling coatings have garnered extensive attention owing to their environmental friendliness and low surface energy. However, their widespread application is hindered by their low substrate adhesion and weak static antifouling capabilities. In this study, a novel silicone polymer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based poly(urea-thiourea-imine) (PDMS-PUTI) was synthesized via stepwise reactions of aminopropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (APT-PDMS) with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), isophthalaldehyde (IPAL), and carbon disulfide (CS2). Subsequently, a nanocomposite coating (AgNPs-x/PDMS-PUTI) was prepared by adding silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to the polymer PDMS-PUTI. The dynamic multiple hydrogen bonds formed between urea and thiourea linkages, along with dynamic imine bonds in the polymer network, endowed the coating with outstanding self-healing properties, enabling complete scratch healing within 10 min at room temperature. Moreover, uniformly dispersed AgNPs not only reduced the surface energy of the coating but also significantly enhanced its antifouling performance. The antibacterial efficiency against common marine bacteriaPseudomonas aeruginosa(P.sp) andStaphylococcus aureus(S.sp) was reduced by 97.08% and 96.71%, respectively, whilst the diatom settlement density on the coating surface was as low as approximately 59 ± 3 diatom cells/mm2. This study presents a novel approach to developing high-performance silicone antifouling coatings.

Development of fluorosilicon bivalve isocyanate microcapsules for multifunctional coatings with excellent self-repairing properties, enhanced hydrophobicity, and corrosion protection properties

Hua Xin,Yiyi Xu,Yue Chen,Qi Peng,Xinqi Li,Bo Gao

This study first self-made TMP-IPDI tetramer, and then prepared a fluorine-modified silicon dioxide double shell isocyanate type self-healing microcapsule (CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 ) using TMP-IPDI tetramer, fluorescent agent 4,4-bis (2-disulfonic acid sodium styrene) biphenyl (CBS-X) as the core material, polyurethane (PU) as the single shell, and fluorine modified silicon dioxide (F-SiO 2 ) as the double shell using interfacial polymerisation method . Then, it was added to waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to prepare self-healing coatings and coatings. The chemical structure , microstructure, self-healing self detection, and mechanical properties of TMP-IPDI, CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 , and composite coatings were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size analysis (PSA), X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, contact angle testing, tensile testing , electrochemical impedance testing, and Ultraviolet photograph. The results showed that the TMP-IPDI tetramer was successfully prepared. The average particle size of CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 prepared is 29 μm. The contact angle, tensile strength , low-frequency impedance and Nyquist curve radius of the repaired spots increased with the increase of the amount of CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 in WPUs; the increasing trend slowed down when the amount of CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 was >5 %. When the CBS-X/TMP-IPDI@PU@F-SiO 2 dosage is 5 %, the WPU coating has good self-repair and self-detection performance. The stress before and after repair were 12.89 MPa and 20.11 MPa, respectively, with a repair rate of 80.3 %. The contact angle at the repair site can reach 100.8°, and the coating has good corrosion resistance . The microcapsules prepared based on fluorine-modified silica (F-SiO 2 ) as the wall material have good self-healing performance for WPU coatings, achieving secondary protection of the repaired material.

Two birds with one stone: Nanocontainers with synergetic inhibition and corrosion sensing abilities towards intelligent self-healing and self-reporting coating

Jinke Wang,Lingwei Ma,Xin Guo,Shanghao Wu,Tong Liu,Jingzhi Yang,Chenhao Ren,Songsong Li,Dawei Zhang

A smart coating integrating high-performance self-healing and sensitive self-reporting abilities was developed based on mesoporous SiO 2 nanoparticles (MSN) containing both 1,10-phenanthroline-5-amine (Phen-NH 2 ) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). In the obtained MSN-PC nanocontainers, Phen-NH 2 functioned as both the corrosion inhibitor and the coloration species, while CTAB acted as not only the template agent but also the corrosion inhibitor. The synthesis of MSN-PC was achieved in a facile one-step process with high encapsulation degree, and both Phen-NH 2 and CTAB exhibited the accelerated release behaviors from MSN-PC triggered by pH variation. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement and quantum chemical calculation results confirmed the synergistic inhibition effect of Phen-NH 2 and CTAB against the corrosion of steel substrate and thus a self-healing effect of the damaged coating. Compared with the blank epoxy coating, the healed epoxy coating containing 4 wt% of MSN-PC could increase the low frequency impedance modulus by more than 20 times after 120 h of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, hence suppressing the corrosion activity on the exposed metal surface. In addition to the self-healing property, the generated Fe 2+ ions from the anodic site of exposed steel surface could quickly react with the released Phen-NH 2 from MSN-PC nanocontainers to produce a prominent red color, achieving the timely indication of coating damage within 20 min of salt spray test. The smart coating realized sensitive corrosion visualization while significantly delaying the corrosion degradation, which holds great potential for long-term corrosion protection.
