Nickel-assisted iron oxide catalysts for the enhanced degradation of refractory DDT in heterogeneous Fenton-like system

Zhirun Xie,Chengxiang Wang,Longwei Yin

A novel Ni@FeO x composite was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and their heterogeneous catalytic activity in Fenton-like reaction to decompose 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) pollutant was systematically investigated. FeO x was doped by nickel ions and modified by nickel particles in this process. In the Fenton-like reaction, 40%Ni@Fe 3 O 4 could remove almost 90% of DDT within 8 h in the presence of H 2 O 2 , exhibiting much higher rate constant than any other systems with lower Ni content. It indicated that too much catalyst is unhelpful to increase the activity further, and excessive H 2 O 2 even decreases the activity. The composite exhibits excellent activity at pH = 7, almost as high as in acid environment, superior to homogenous catalysts. According to GC–MS results, the decomposing process mainly is a successive dechlorination process, partially accompanied with the fragmentation of small molecular. The Ni 2+ and Ni 0 are deduced to promote the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle together to provide abundant Fe 2+ for Fenton reaction .

Photothermal conversion-coordinated Fenton-like and photocatalytic reactions of Cu2-xSe-Au Janus nanoparticles for tri-combination antitumor therapy

Yuanlin Wang,Zhenglin Li,Ying Hu,Jing Liu,Mengyu Guo,Hengxiang Wei,Shanliang Zheng,Tingting Jiang,Xiang Sun,Zhuo Ma,Ye Sun,Flemming Besenbacher,Chunying Chen,Miao Yu

In vivo chemical reactions activated by the tumor microenvironment (TME) are particularly promising for antitumor treatments. Herein, employing Cu 2-x Se-Au Janus nanoparticles (NPs), photothermal conversion-coordinated Fenton-like and photocatalytic reactions are demonstrated in vitro/vivo . The amorphous form of Cu 2-x Se and the catalytic effect of Au benefit the OH generation, and the photo-induced electron‒hole separation of the Janus NPs produces additional OH. The plasmonic electrons of Au facilitate the conversion from Cu 2+ to Cu + . Both Cu 2-x Se and Au contributes to the efficient photothermal conversion, further promoting the reactions. As a result, the H 2 O 2 utilization rate is largely increased, and remarkable generation of reactive oxygen species is achieved by cell endogenous H 2 O 2 in vitro/vivo . A competent tumor inhibition effect is afforded, with high-contrast multimodal imaging. This work opens up the route synergistically integrating photothermal therapy with chemodynamic therapy and photocatalytic therapy into tri-combination antitumor therapy, simply by heterojunction of semiconductor and noble metal.

Unveiling the catalytic ability of carbonaceous materials in Fenton-like reaction by controlled-release CaO2 nanoparticles for trichloroethylene degradation

Meesam Ali,Muhammad Tariq,Yong Sun,Jingyao Huang,Xiaogang Gu,Sana Ullah,Muhammad Asif Nawaz,Zhengyuan Zhou,Ali Shan,Muhammad Danish,Shuguang Lyu

Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation. BET and SEM analyses showed a higher adsorption capacity of AC (27.8%) than others. The generation of solution-Fe(II) and surface-Fe(II) revealed the reduction of Fe(III) on CMs-surface. The role of O-containing groups was investigated by the FTIR technique and XPS quantified the 52% and 57% surface-Fe(II) in BC and AC systems, respectively. EPR and quenching tests confirmed that both solution and surface-bound species (HO•, O 2 − • and  1 O 2 ) contributed to TCE degradation. Acidic pH condition encouraged TCE removal and the presence of HCO 3 − negatively affected TCE removal than other inorganic ions. Both schemes (PVA@nCP/Fe(III)/BC and PVA@nCP/Fe(III)/AC) exhibited promising results in the actual groundwater, surfactant-amended solution, and removal of other chlorinated-pollutants, opening a new direction towards green environmental remediation for prolonged benefits.

Enhanced phenol degradation at near neutral pH achieved by core-shell hierarchical 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu catalyst

Lilan Huang,Leitao Zhang,Deyuan Li,Qingping Xin,Rui Jiao,Xiaoyang Hou,Yuzhong Zhang,Hong Li

Delicate design of hierarchical and porous nanoarchitectures has become a highly effective strategy to develop novel bimetallic catalyst with improved stability and catalytic performance. Herein, a core-shell hierarchical 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu Fenton-like catalyst with 4A zeolite/Fe as core components and two-dimensional Cu hydroxide nanosheets assemblies as shell structure was fabricated through a simple and scalable approach and used for phenol degradation. The results indicated that 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu bimetallic catalyst had higher catalytic activity and utilization efficiency of H 2 O 2 than that of 4A zeolite/Fe and 4A zeolite@Cu monometallic catalysts at near neutral pH. In the presence of H 2 O 2 , the 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu bimetallic catalyst could remove 95.3 % phenol after 4 h at pH 5, which was much higher than that of monometallic catalyst under the same condition. The enhanced activity of 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu was ascribed to the synergistic effect between the 4A zeolite/Fe (core) and two-dimensional Cu hydroxide nanosheets (shell). More importantly, the copper hydroxide nanosheets with open network structure on the surface of 4A zeolite/Fe@Cu improved the stability of the Fe(III) at acidic conditions, and avoided reduced catalytic efficiency of Fe(III) caused by embedding effect. This strategy provided guidance to the design of high-performance bimetallic Fenton-like catalysts.

Surface modified silver/magnetite nanocomposite activating hydrogen peroxide for efficient degradation of chlorophenols

Lixia Li,Qinkai Guo,Baohe Lv,Minxue Zheng,Wang Zhan,Yanhong Liu,Wanzhen Xu,Ruiwei Wang,Hongbo Zeng,Baodong Mao

The mixed-valent magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) played a critical role in H 2 O 2 -based Fenton-like system for the removal of chlorophenols, but high activity and cycle stability of the Fe 3 O 4 -based catalysts are still a huge challenge. Herein, a series of surface hydroxyl- and carboxyl-modified Ag 0 /Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite catalysts were prepared and used to activate H 2 O 2 for degradation chlorophenols pollutants. Under the optimized condition, nearly 100% degradation ratio were achieved within 2–30 min for 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,3-dichlorophenol, 3,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, p-nitrophenol, and 98% degradation ratio for 2,5-dichlorophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol and 3,5-dichlorophenol,. Moreover, wide pH applicability was obtained for the Ag 0 /Fe 3 O 4 -H 2 O 2 system, where 95% degradation ratio of 2,4-dichlorophenol was still obtained at pH 6.0. The excellent activity of Ag 0 /Fe 3 O 4 catalyst can be ascribed to the incorporation of Ag 0 nanoparticles that accelerated the Fe(III)/Fe(II) transformation with the assistance of surface hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Detailed mechanism study indicated a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, where the oxidative degradation and reductive degradation pathways coexisted in the system. The surface-modified Ag 0 /Fe 3 O 4 -H 2 O 2 provide a practical catalyst system for the removal of phenol contaminants with high reaction rate, wide pH adaptability, and validity for a series of chlorophenols.

Overlooked self-catalytic mechanism in phenolic moiety-mediated Fenton-like system: Formation of Fe(III) hydroperoxide complex and co-treatment of refractory pollutants

Cheng Chen,Yongyi Wang,Yajing Huang,Jian Hua,Wei Qu,Dehua Xia,Chun He,Virender K. Sharma,Dong Shu

Applications of Fenton-like reactions (Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 ) without catalyst have low efficiency in remediating pollutants. Herein, pollutants containing phenolic moiety (P, e.g., paracetamol (PCM)) were demonstrated to make Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system highly effective in degrading a wide range of contaminants. Kinetics analysis shows the self-catalytic degradation of PCM with optimum performance at pH 4.0, and Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion was accelerated without the assistance of cocatalyst. Based on state-of-art spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations, the overlooked self-catalytic mechanism was revealed. In the presence of phenolic moiety, a yellow-colored high-spin P-Fe(III)-OOH complex can be formed in Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system, which subsequently converts to Fe(II). Afterwards, the oxidation of P gives hydroquinone that also facilitates the cycling of Fe(III)/Fe(II). The accumulated Fe(II) reacts with H 2 O 2 to generate hydroxyl radicals, the major species responsible to oxidize pollutants, thereby achieving efficient decontaminant performance. Results provide new insights into the self-catalytic Fenton-like process for remediating a mixture of pollutants.

In-situ decoration of Cu2(OH)3F on BiOBr with exposed (010) facets: Heterojunctions and photo-Fenton-like synergistic promote Cu+/Cu2+ circulation

Yaxin Guo,Yonggang Liu,Shiduo Hao,Xueying Zhang,Yonghao Yu

Among various advanced oxidation processes , coupling photocatalysis and Fenton-like reactions can overcome the inherent drawbacks of the single technology , which is usually used to remove organic contaminants from wastewater. In this paper, Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr composites with (010) facets exposed surface were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) solution with Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr composite in the photo-Fenton-like system reached 98.8 % within 60 min, and the degradation activity was 4.18 and 2.46 times considerably greater than those of photocatalytic and Fenton-like reactions, respectively. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency was still maintained at 89.8 %, demonstrating the exceptional stability of the catalyst. Moreover, based on the characterization of the catalyst, it was found that the high exposure of the crystal plane of the BiOBr material (010) not only speeds up the electron transport between Cu 2 (OH) 3 F and BiOBr and improves the rapid conversion of Cu 2+ ions, but also slows down the rapid electron-hole recombination. Then the free radicals during the reaction were captured, which found that ·OH, ·O 2 − and h + were the main active components in this synergistic degradation system. Finally, the mechanism of Cu 2 (OH) 3 F/BiOBr (010) heterojunction photo-Fenton-like synergistic degradation was proposed. This work can provide an effective pathway for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Application of copper tailings combined with persulfate for better removing methyl orange from wastewater

Wang Jinpeng,Zhang Ming,Zhou Runjuan,Li Jiyuan,Zhao Wei,Chen Wenyuan,Zeng Jianping

In this paper, wasted copper tailings (CT) were used to activate persulfate (PS) to degrade azo dye methyl orange (MO). The results show that a large amount of FeS 2 contained in CT can slowly release Fe 2+ in the aqueous solution to activate PS to generate reactive oxygen species to degrade MO. When the dosage of CT and PS was 2 g/L and 3 mM respectively, the MO degradation efficiency of 20 mg/L in the CT/PS system was 96.52% within 60 min. At the same time, it is found that CT has a certain adsorption capacity for MO, and the intra-particle diffusion model can well describe the adsorption process of MO by CT. The effects of related reaction parameters (CT dosage, PS dosage, initial MO concentration and solution pH) on MO degradation in CT/PS system were investigated. Compared with the direct addition of an equal amount of Fe 2+ as in the CT/PS system, for homogeneous activated PS to degrade MO (Fe 2+ /PS), the results showed that the degradation efficiency of Fe 2+ /PS system for MO was lower than that of CT/PS system due to excessive Fe 2+ consumption of . By comparing the Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ concentrations in the two systems, it was found that the CT/PS system could maintain a low Fe 2+ concentration during the reaction process, and the Fe 2+ released by CT could be used by PS to degrade MO more efficiently. The free radical scavenging experiments showed that the reactive oxygen species in the CT/PS system was mainly . This study not only proposed a new CT utilization approach, but also solved the problem of reduced degradation efficiency of organic pollutants caused by excessive Fe 2+ in the Fenton-like reaction. This study provides a new way to utilize the waste copper tailings which are harmful to the environment. It also overcomes the defects of degradation of organic pollutants by Fe 2+ homogeneous activated persulfate to some extent.

An Fe(III)/H2O2 Fenton-like process enhanced by Rifampicin: The role of hydroquinone moiety

Jiahang Liu,Yingying Chu,Xiaoyang Li,Mengying Qian,Weiming Zhang

The co-catalytic effect of hydroquinone/quinone electron shuttle has received great attention in the area of Fenton-like reaction. However, the crucial roles of phenolic or hydroquinone moieties in the chemical structures of organic pollutants have always been overlooked. In this study, we discovered that the introduction of rifampicin (RIF), a representative of rifamycin antibiotics, could trigger complete degradation of atrazine (ATZ) in the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system. By exploring the influences of initial Fe(III), H 2 O 2 , RIF concentrations and pH values on ATZ degradation efficiency, key components affecting metal ion valence transitions in the system were identified. Quenching experiments, probe tests and EPR analysis verified that •OH served as the primary active species, while HO 2 •/O 2 •− was also generated. Through monitoring Fe(II) concentration variations and employing mass spectrometric analyses, the oxidation pathway of RIF was elucidated: When mixed with Fe(III), the naphthohydroquinone moiety of RIF immediately acted as a direct electron donor to reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), while itself being oxidized to RIF-Q. Upon H 2 O 2 addition, it rapidly triggered the classical Fenton reaction with Fe(II) to generate •OH, enabling ATZ degradation. Simultaneously, RIF-Q underwent further oxidative breakdown, with some degradation products retaining the capacity to continuously donate electrons to Fe(III), thereby promoting its reduction. This study provides new insights for the co-catalytic effect of pollutant-derived electron shuttles on the transition of metal ion valences.

Enhanced leachate concentrate degradation across variable pH ranges using Cu@ATP-CTS Fenton-like catalysts for H₂O₂ activation

Cuicui Xu,Yue Lv,Xia Qin,Fanbin Zhang,Hongyun Ren,Xujie Lan,Xiyang Li,Xingwei Tao

Landfill leachate nanofiltration concentrates (LLNC) contain complex organic pollutants that are difficult to treat. This study developed a copper-doped attapulgite-chitosan composite catalyst (Cu@ATP-CTS) for efficient LLNC degradation in a Fenton-like system. The incorporation of attapulgite extended the effective pH range of Fenton reactions from 2 to 8, overcoming traditional limitations. Optimized via response surface methodology, the catalyst achieved 89.02% UV 254 removal, 73.86% COD removal, and 77.24% TOC removal within 115 min under optimal conditions. Copper played a crucial role in H₂O₂ activation, cycling between Cu 0 , Cu + , and Cu 2+ to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), the key species driving pollutant degradation. The Cu@ATP-CTS catalyst also demonstrated strong stability and reusability over five cycles. This study provides a robust and sustainable method for LLNC treatment, offering significant potential for application in landfill leachate and wastewater management.

Decomposition of Nickel(Ⅱ)−Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid by Fenton−Like reaction over oxygen vacancies-based Cu−Doped Fe3O4@γ−Al2O3 catalyst: A synergy of oxidation and adsorption

Wuming Xie,Fengping Zhou,Xiaolin Bi,Dongdong Chen,Zijun Huang,Yuhui Li,Shuiyu Sun,Jingyong Liu

Nickel (Ⅱ)−ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Ni−EDTA) complexes are widely present in electroplating effluents. Owing to its chemical stability, Ni−EDTA is hardly removed in traditional Fenton/Fenton-like processes with conventional iron (Fe)−based catalyst. In this study, oxygen vacancies were introduced into our highly efficient and novel Fe 3 O 4 @γ−Al 2 O 3 catalysts using Cu doping for Ni−EDTA decomposition in Fenton−like system. Without noble−metal cocatalyst, the introduction of oxygen vacancies in Cu−doped Fe 3 O 4 @γ−Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit excellent Fenton−like activity even in neutral or alkaline conditions. Experimental results revealed that, without the aid of extra energy, Ni−EDTA complexes could be effectively decomposed over oxygen vacancies−based catalyst. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X−ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), oxygen temperature−programmed desorption (O 2 −TPD), and hydrogen temperature−programmed reduction (H 2 −TPR) were used to get a deep insight into the decomposition mechanism. Additionally, by employing the Al−containing support, stable layered double−hydroxide phases of Ni Al could be formed, indicating that a synergy of oxidation and adsorption could simultaneously take place, which led to the recovery of released Ni 2+ ions and also reduction in secondary pollution. To investigate the decomposition process of Ni−EDTA over oxygen vacancies−based catalyst, liquid chromatography−quadrupole/electrostatic field orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (LC−MS/MS) was employed to identify the generated intermediates, and thus, a plausible decomposition pathway was successfully conceived.

Visible Light Assisted Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Degradation of Organic Pollutant via α-FeOOH/Mesoporous Carbon Composites

Xufang Qian,Meng Ren,Yao Zhu,Dongting Yue,Yu Han,Jinping Jia,Yixin Zhao

A novel α-FeOOH/mesoporous carbon (α-FeOOH/MesoC) composite prepared by in situ crystallization of adsorbed ferric ions within carboxyl functionalized mesoporous carbon was developed as a novel visible light assisted heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The visible light active α-FeOOH nanocrystals were encapsulated in the mesoporous frameworks accompanying with surface attached large α-FeOOH microcrystals via C–O–Fe bonding. Assisting with visible light irradiation on α-FeOOH/MesoC, the mineralization efficiency increased owing to the photocatalytic promoted catalyzing H2O2 beyond the photothermal effect. The synergistic effect between α-FeOOH and MesoC in α-FeOOH/MesoC composite improved the mineralization efficiency than the mixture catalyst of α-FeOOH and MesoC. The iron leaching is greatly suppressed on the α-FeOOH/MesoC composite. Interestingly, the reused α-FeOOH/MesoC composites showed much higher phenol oxidation and mineralization efficiencies than the fresh catalyst and homogeneous Fenton system (FeSO4/H2O2). The XPS, XRD, FTIR, and textural property results reveal that the great enhancement comes from the interfacial emerged oxygen containing groups between α-FeOOH and MesoC after the first heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction. In summary, visible light induced photocatalysis assisted heterogeneous Fenton-like process in the α-FeOOH/MesoC composite system improved the HO• production efficiency and Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and further activated the interfacial catalytic sites, which finally realize an extraordinary higher degradation and mineralization efficiency.
