The Aging Behavior of Polyvinyl Chloride Microplastics by UV/Sodium Percarbonate Oxidation: Efficiency and Mechanism

Luhan Su,Zhongwen Liu,Jia He,Yan Wu,Qingguo Wang

The aging behavior of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has garnered significant attention, yet the exact aging process undergone by microplastics during advanced oxidation still remains unclear. This study emphasized elucidating the oxidation and dechlorination mechanisms of polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC MPs) within the UV-activated sodium percarbonate system (UV/SPC). After 35 h of UV/SPC (0.05 M) treatment, it exhibited effective dechlorination with a Cl−release of 100.62 ± 13.17 mg/L. And this treatment resulted in the fragmentation and release of fragments from the PVC MPs, thereby contributing to their further aging and dechlorination. In addition, an increase in oxygen-containing functional groups was identified. Quenching experiments confirm that·OHand·CO3−are the primary active species present in the system. In summary, the aging of PVC MPs results in a process of fragmentation, releasing fragments that are more fragile and susceptible to mineralization compared to the original PVC MPs. The release of chloride ions originates from the mineralization of these fragments released from PVC MPs by·OHand·CO3−. This study has provided valuable insights into the aging mechanisms of MPs in practical wastewater treatment.

Benzene oxidation by Fe(III)-activated percarbonate: matrix-constituent effects and degradation pathways

Xiaori Fu,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Virender K. Sharma,Mark L. Brusseau,Yunfei Xue,Muhammad Danish,George Y. Fu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui

Complete degradation of benzene by the Fe(III)-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system is demonstrated. Removal of benzene at 1.0   mM was seen within 160   min, depending on the molar ratios of SPC to Fe(III). A mechanism of benzene degradation was elaborated by free-radical probe-compound tests, free-radical scavengers tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and determination of Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 concentrations. The degradation products were also identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The hydroxyl radical (HO ) was the leading species in charge of benzene degradation. The formation of HO was strongly dependent on the generation of the organic compound radical (R ) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 − ). Benzene degradation products included hydroxylated derivatives of benzene (phenol, hydroquinone, benzoquinone, and catechol) and aliphatic acids (oxalic and fumaric acids). The proposed degradation pathways are consistent with radical formation and identified products. The investigation of selected matrix constituents showed that the Cl − and HCO 3 − had inhibitory effects on benzene degradation. Natural organic matter (NOM) had accelerating influence in degrading benzene. The developed system was tested with groundwater samples and it was found that the Fe(III)-activated SPC has a great potential in effective remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater while more further studies should be done for its practical application in the future because of the complex subsurface environment.

Removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria by the coupled system of ferrous ion activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and sodium percarbonate (SPC): Performance and mechanisms

Qian Wang,Jingfeng Gao,Hao Chen,Ying Liu,Xiaoyu Fu,Jiawen An,Hanyi Wang,Yuxuan Wang

Antibiotic resistance has turned into a focus of universal public health concern. Wastewater treatment plants are considered as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), which can be transmitted to the environment. In this research, an effective method for inactivating Escherichia coli DH5α ( E. coli DH5α) carrying resistance genes was developed utilizing dual oxidant system of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and sodium percarbonate (SPC) in the presence of ferrous ions (Fe(II)). The results indicated that E. coli DH5α could be inactivated 6.36 log under the conditions of 0.50 mM PMS, 0.50 mM SPC and 0.50 mM Fe(II) after 30 min. Besides, the removal of different types of ARB and pollutants could also be achieved by Fe(II)/PMS/SPC system. The quenching experiments and EPR analysis demonstrated that reactive species (•OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , 1 O 2 and CO 3 •− ) involved in the inactivation of E. coli DH5α. Bacterial damage mechanisms were systematically studied in terms of cell structure and morphology, enzyme activity, malondialdehyde and intracellular reactive oxygen species levels. The inactivation of E. coli DH5α in complex water matrix (including coexisting of anions and natural organic matter) and real wastewater was inhibited. The abundance of intracellular ARGs decreased by 1.15 log, whereas extracellular ARGs increased by 0.32 log. This research supplied a prospective approach for inhibiting the dissemination of antibiotic resistance.

Role of multivalent iron in enhancing sodium percarbonate oxidation for alleviating membrane distillation fouling caused by shale gas produced water

Haiqing Chang,Yuan Huang,Suhua Gu,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Fangshu Qu

Membrane distillation (MD) shows significant potential for treating shale gas produced water, yet membrane fouling remains a persistent challenge in conventional MD systems. This study investigates an innovative pretreatment approach using sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation combined with various iron-based catalysts, systematically evaluating five distinct treatment processes, including standalone MD and four hybrid systems incorporating iron species. The experimental results demonstrated progressive improvement across all pretreatment methods, with the most effective Fe(VI)/Fe(II)/SPC-MD hybrid process achieving a 27.28% reduction in fluorescent organics, a decrease in hydrophobic fraction from 52.19% to 39.97%, and a notable enhancement in normalized flux from 0.42 to 0.79 compared to untreated shale gas produced water. Comprehensive membrane characterization through advanced analytical techniques, including electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and surface property measurements, conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of these oxidation pretreatments in mitigating foulant deposition and preserving membrane performance. Statistical analysis highlighted hydrophobic, hydrophilic organic components, and organics along with coagulation effects as primary contributors influencing membrane fouling. The superior performance of the combined Fe(VI)/Fe(II)/SPC oxidation system stems from its multifaceted mechanism that simultaneously leverages oxidative degradation, coagulation, and adsorption processes to reduce both organic concentration and hydrophobicity, thereby significantly alleviating membrane fouling.

Combination of magnetite and sodium percarbonate to enhance acetate-enriched short-chain fatty acids production during sludge anaerobic fermentation

Denglong Lu,Yang Song,Huanying Ge,Hongjia Peng,Haipu Li

Large amounts of waste activated sludge are generated daily worldwide, posing significant environmental challenges. Anaerobic fermentation is a promising method for sludge disposal, but it has two technical bottlenecks: the availability of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing substrates and SCFAs consumption by methanogenesis. This study proposes a pretreatment strategy combining sodium percarbonate (SPC) and magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) to address these issues. Under optimized conditions (20 mg Fe 3 O 4 /g TSS and 15 mg SPC/g TSS), SCFAs production increased to 3244.10 ± 216.31 mg COD/L, about 3.06 times the control (1057.29 ± 35.06 mg COD/L) and surpassing reported treatments. The combined pretreatment enhanced the disruption of extracellular polymeric substances, increased the release of biodegradable matters, improved acidogenesis enzyme activities, and inhibited methanogenesis. Additionally, it increased NH 4 + -N release in favor of the recovery of phosphorus from sludge residual. This study demonstrates an efficient pretreatment for high SCFAs production and resource recovery from WAS.

Comparative toxicity reduction potential of UV/sodium percarbonate and UV/hydrogen peroxide treatments for bisphenol A in water: An integrated analysis using chemical, computational, biological, and metabolomic approaches

Jiong Gao,Jie Song,Jinshao Ye,Xiaodi Duan,Dionysios D. Dionysiou,Jagjit S. Yadav,Mallikarjuna N. Nadagouda,Lixia Yang,Shenglian Luo

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common industrial chemical with significant adverse impacts on biological systems as an environmental contaminant. UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) is a well-established technology for BPA treatment in water while UV/sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC) is an emerging technology with unclear biological impacts of treated effluent. Therefore, in this study, the toxicity evaluation of BPA solution treated with UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/SPC was preformed and compared based on transformation products (TPs) profile, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) toxicity assays, and metabolomic analysis. TPs with hydroxylation, double-ring split, and single-ring cleavage were generated from BPA during the treatments with both technologies, but TPs with quinonation were specifically detected in UV/H 2 O 2 treated solution at the UV dose of 1470 mJ cm −2 . QSAR prediction based on TPs profile (excluding benzoquinone TPs) suggested that UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/SPC treatments of BPA may increase matrix toxicity due to the formation of multi-hydroxylated TPs; however decreased bioaccumulation potential of all TPs may mitigate the increase of toxicity by reducing the chance of TPs to reach the concentration of toxicity threshold. In vivo assays with E. coli showed inhibited cell growth, arrested cell cycle, and increased cell death in BPA solution treated with UV/H 2 O 2 at the UV dose of 1470 mJ cm −2 . Metabolomic analysis indicated that BPA solution treated with UV/H 2 O 2 at UV dose of 1470 mJ cm −2 impacted E. coli metabolism differently than other solutions with unique inhibition on glycerolipid metabolism. Moreover, BPA interfered in various metabolic pathways including alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and lysine degradation, which were mitigated after the treatments. UV/SPC showed advantage over UV/H 2 O 2 of attenuated impact on butanoate metabolism with UV irradiation. This study has generated valuable data for better understanding of biological impacts of BPA and its solutions treated with UV/H 2 O 2 or UV/SPC, thus providing insights for their application prospect for water and wastewater treatment.

Improving ultrafiltration of algae-laden water with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt enhanced by sodium percarbonate

Wenxin Song,Zhimin Gao,Chengsi Hou,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Jinchuan Lian,Tao Yang,Zhiwei Zhou,Daoji Wu,Heng Liang

Ultrafiltration (UF) is extensively used for algae removal because of its ability to retain algal cells with high efficiency, but it still faces the problem of membrane fouling and low retention capacity of dissolved organics. Hence, a strategy of coagulation with chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (HTCC) enhanced by sodium percarbonate (SPC) pre-oxidation was proposed to improve the UF performance. The fouling resistances were calculated by a resistance-in-series model based on Darcy's formula, and the membrane fouling mechanism was evaluated using a pore plugging-cake filtration model. The effect of SPC-HTCC treatment on the properties of algal foulants was explored, and the result showed that the water quality was improved with the maximum removal rates of 78.8 %, 52.4 % and 79.5 % for algal cells, dissolved organic carbon and turbidity , respectively. The SPC could achieve a mild oxidation effect that degraded the electronegative organics attached to algal cells without destroying the cell integrity, making the algal pollutants easier to agglomerate through subsequent HTCC coagulation by forming larger flocs. In terms of membrane filtration, the terminal normalized flux was increased from 0.25 to 0.71, with the reversible and irreversible resistances reduced by 90.8 % and 40.2 %, individually. The synergistic treatment reduced the accumulation of algal cells and algae-derived organics on the membrane surface as inferred from the interface fouling characteristics. The interfacial free energy analysis showed that the synergistic treatment reduced the adhesion of contaminants to the membrane surface, as well as the attraction among pollutants. Overall, the proposed process has high application prospects for algae-laden water purification .

A sodium percarbonate/ultraviolet system generated free radicals for degrading capsaicin to alleviate inhibition of methane production during anaerobic digestion of lipids and food waste

Liangchen Yue,Jun Cheng,Junjie Hua,Haiquan Dong,Junhu Zhou

To alleviate inhibition of anaerobic digestion caused by capsaicin, which is easily soluble in the lipid components of food waste (FW), an advanced oxidation process with sodium percarbonate/ultraviolet (SPC/UV) was used to generate free radicals for degrading capsaicin and recovering methane production. Free radical sweeping showed that the free radicals OH, O 2 — and CO 3 — worked together to degrade capsaicin. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that capsaicin likely had four degradation pathways via conversion into benzoquinone, and finally into carbon dioxide and water. The degradation rate of capsaicin in lipids increased from 62.2% to 96.0% when the SPC concentration increased from 2 mmol/L to 32 mmol/L (UV intensity = 20.66 mW/cm 2 ). The degradation rate increased from 70.9% to 94.6% when the UV intensity increased from 20.66 mW/cm 2 to 46.86 mW/cm 2 (SPC concentration = 4 mmol/L). The subsequent products after capsaicin degradation were subjected to anaerobic digestion either directly or by adding FW. The reduced intracellular oxidative kinases of anaerobic digestion microorganisms recovered the CH 4 yield from 27.2 mL/g-total volatile solids (TVS) with capsaicin to 311.2 mL/g-TVS with degraded capsaicin, which was 40.7% that of the control group (765.3 mL/g-TVS without capsaicin). After adding FW, the CH 4 yield of SPC/UV degradation effluent was 504.1 mL/g-TVS, which was 82.6% that of the control group (610.4 mL/g-TVS).

Far-UVC Radiation Activating Percarbonate to Accelerate the Removal of Methotrexate: Degradation Efficiency, Mechanisms, and Moiety-Dependence Transformation

Jiawei Chen,Lin Du,Jian Liu,Lifeng Lin,Min Zhao,Lei Wang,Shaohua Chen,Jianzhi Huang

This study investigated innovative advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) combining far-UVC radiation at 222 nm with sodium percarbonate (SPC) to effectively remove methotrexate (MTX). UV222 significantly enhanced the direct photolysis and AOP degradation of MTX. •OH, CO3•–, and direct photolysis were primarily involved in the degradation, with their relative contribution being in the order •OH > CO3•– > direct photolysis. The fluence-normalized steady-state concentrations of both CO3•– and •OH in UV222/SPC were 7.76 and 4.05 times higher, respectively, than those in UV254/SPC. Transformation product analysis revealed distinct MTX degradation pathways and varied degradation rates of MTX substructures between the systems, with the order in UV254/SPC being 4-aminobenzamide (ABZ) > 2,4-diamino-6-(hydroxymethyl) pteridine (DHP) > l-glutamic acid (LG) and that in UV222/SPC being DHP > ABZ > LG, suggesting different reactivities of MTX moieties under each system. The presence of HCO3– and HA inhibited the MTX degradation, whereas NO3– promoted it, in the UV222/SPC system. In addition, UV222/SPC demonstrated a lower energy consumption compared to UV254/SPC, highlighting its potential for cost-effective wastewater treatment applications. This study offers new insights into the mechanisms of UV222/SPC systems and provides guidance for the development of technologies for the removal of emerging contaminants.

Walnut Shell Biomass Triggered Formation of Fe3C-Biochar Composite for Removal of Diclofenac by Activating Percarbonate

Na Zhang,Yudong Huo,Chun Pei,Ying Zhang,Lijie Xu,Lu Gan

Percarbonate (SPC) as a promising substitute for liquid H2O2has many advantages in the application of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). Developing efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly catalysts for SPC activation plays the key role in promoting the development of SPC-based ISCO. Herein, the walnut shell biomass was combined with ferric nitrate for the catalytic synthesis of Fe3C@biochar composite (Fe3C@WSB), which demonstrated high efficiency in activating SPC for the removal of diclofenac (DCF). The Fe3C showed average crystallite size of 32.6 nm and the composite Fe3C@WSB demonstrated strong adsorptivity. The prepared Fe3C@WSB could activate both SPC and H2O2with high efficiency at ca. pH 3 with extremely low leaching of iron, while in a weak acidic condition, higher efficiency of DCF removal was obtained in the Fe3C@WSB/SPC process than in the Fe3C@WSB/H2O2process. Moreover, the Fe3C@WSB/SPC and Fe3C@WSB/H2O2processes did not show significant differences when supplied with varying amounts of catalyst or oxidant, but the Fe3C@WSB/SPC process exhibited stronger capability in dealing with relatively highly concentrated DCF solution. Based on quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, heterogeneous activation of SPC was assumed as the dominant route for DCF degradation, and both the oxidation by radicals, including •OH, •O2−and CO3•−, combined with electron transfer pathway contributed to DCF degradation in the Fe3C@WSB/SPC process. The cycling experiment results also revealed the stability of Fe3C@WSB. This work may cast some light on the development of efficient catalysts for the activation of SPC.

In-situ sodium percarbonate assisting and intensifying the aerobic whole-cell catalysis and bio-oxidation of lignocellulosic xylose, glucose and glycerol

Jian Han,Feng Han,Jiaqing Wang,Yang Wei,Boris N. Kuznetsov,Yong Xu

Oxygen supply is one of the decisive factors of obligate aerobic microbial fermentation. Gluconobacter oxydans as a typical aerobic bacterium has excellent whole-cell catalysis and bio-oxidation ability to sugars and alcohols. By the dual function of oxygenation and alkali production of sodium percarbonate (SPC), the dissolved oxygen supply and pH stabilization was experimentally investigated and applied for the first time in G. oxydans fermentation. SPC performed a significant assisting effort to bio-oxidation performance by the in-situ oxygen supply and neutralization for whole-cell catalysis and bio-oxidation of lignocellulosic xylose , glucose, and glycerol. Compared with common aeration fermentation (and even the sealed pure-oxygen supplied mode), the bio-production of the three platform compounds xylonic acid, gluconic acid , and 1, 3-dihydroxyacetone was improved significantly by 45.7%, 28.4%, and 39.1%, respectively. In addition, the direct bioproduction of xylonic acid from the crude corncob sulfate hydrolysate was also improved by 17.3%. Within 4 h, 37.7 g/L of xylonic acid was produced in the fermentation tank, with a productivity of 9.4 g/L/h. The in-situ SPC assistance provides a simple and practical approach to intensify the bio-oxidation performance of G. oxydans for the whole-cell catalysis of high-value-added platform compounds from lignocellulosic feedstocks .

Synthesis of nZVI@reduced graphene oxide: an efficient catalyst for degradation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) in percarbonate system

Farooq Usman,Danish Muhammad,Lu Shuguang,Naqvi Muhammmad,Gu Xiaogang,Fu Xiaro,Zhang Xiang,Nasir Muhammad

Graphene-oxide-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite (nZVI–rGO) was synthesized and tested as an efficient percarbonate activator for degradation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). Significant dispersion of nZVI on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was observed, with good limitation of nanoparticle agglomeration and aggregation. Good TCA degradation efficiency of 90% was achieved in 2.5 h in presence of 0.8 g/l nZVI–rGO catalyst and 30 mM sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidant; however, excessive catalyst or oxidant concentration reduced the degradation efficiency. Investigation of reactive oxygen species using radical probe compounds as well as radical scavengers confirmed presence of hydroxyl (OH · ) and superoxide ( \({\text{O}}_{2}^{\cdot - }\) ) radicals that are responsible for the TCA degradation. The morphology and surface characteristics of the heterogeneous catalyst were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis revealed that the synthesized catalyst had large surface area and small particle size of 299.12 m 2 /g and 20.10 nm, respectively, compared with 5.33 m 2 /g and 1.12 µm for bare graphene oxide. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed good dispersion of nZVI on the surface of rGO. Fourier-transform infrared characteristic peaks confirmed strong attachment of Fe onto the rGO surface. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis validated the stoichiometric composition of the prepared Fe/rGO material. In conclusion, use of nZVI–rGO-activated SPC could represent an alternative technique for remediation of TCA-contaminated groundwater.
