Coupling of FeS2-xSex nanoparticles and foam-like carbon superstructure to achieve high-density electron flow for enhanced sodium storage performance

Ting Feng,Fang Wang,Honglei Zhang,Fangya Guo,Tianxiang Yang,Haihan Li,Bo Zhao,Yong Liu,Haitao Wu,Yi Xiong,Fengzhang Ren

The advantage of FeS 2 in sodium storage is constrained by its poor inherent conductivity and unstable electrochemical activity. In this work, the hierarchical structure, FeS 2-x Se x nanoparticles with high activity encapsulated into the foam-like carbon network, are fabricated by in-situ chelation/self-crosslinking and synchronous sulfurization/selenization strategies. Inside, the incorporation of Se into FeS 2 markedly changes the local electron distribution around the Fe atoms and improves the intrinsic conductivity of FeS 2 . Outside, S, Se codoped foam-like carbon networks are evenly wrapped on the surface of FeS 2-x Se x nanoparticles, which accelerate the diffusion of internal charges into the electrolyte. Excitingly, the Se-replaced FeS 2-x Se x nanoparticles and carbon shell established an unobstructed pathway through robust Fe-S-C and Fe-Se-C bond connections, realizing the transmission of more charge transfer, and finally forming a high-density electron flow. This powerful charge transfer mode from the inside out realizes an overall conductivity improvement of the materials and markedly enhances the rate performance. Moreover, the obtained FeS 2-x Se x nanoparticles ensure high electrochemical activity, and the external carbon layer effectively manages the volume expansion during the sodium storage process. As expected, the FeS 2-x Se x @SSe/C(5:1) exhibits a high capacity (603.73 mAh g −1  at 1 A g −1 over 600 cycles), outstanding rate capability, and cycle performance (225 mAh g −1  at 3 A g −1 over 5231 cycles) for sodium-ion batteries.

Rational construction of densely packed Si/MXene composite microspheres enables favorable sodium storage

Wang Hui-Qi,Zhao Ya-Xin,Gou Li,Wang Li-Yong,Wang Mei,Li Ying,Hu Sheng-Liang

The fast and reversible sodiation/desodiation of anode materials remains an indelible yet fascinating target. Herein, a class of the densely packed Si/MXene composite microspheres is constructed and prepared, taking advantages of the synergistic effects of the activated Si nanoparticles and conductive flower-like MXene microspheres with ample ion-diffusion pathways. Consequently, the intrinsic MXene nanosheets with intelligently regulated interlayer spacing can accommodate the volume change induced strain during cycling, and the strong interaction between the Si and MXene matrix greatly contributes to the robust structural stability. As expected, the Si/MXene composite architecture exhibits boosted sodium storage performance, in terms of an inspiring reversible capacity of 751 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 , remarkable long-term cycling stability of 376 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 over 500 cycles, and outstanding rate capability (after one consecutive current density changing from 0.1 to 2.0 A·g −1 , a large capacity of 275 mAh·g −1 is regained after suddenly returning the initial current density back to 0.1 A·g −1 and in the subsequent 200 cycles this composite architecture anode still delivers a capacity of 332 mAh·g −1 ). The kinetics analysis indicates superior pseudocapacitive property, high electronic conductivity, and favorable sodium-ion adsorption and diffusion capability, confirming fast sodium storage performance. Impressively, ex-situ X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction characterizations corroborate the formation of NaSi 6 as the main sodiation products during the reversible evolutions of cycled proceeding with sodium-ion insertion. This work sheds light on the elaborate design of silicon-based nanostructured anodes towards advanced high-performance sodium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract

A nano-TiO2/corn stalk pith carbon sphere composite material with excellent lithium and sodium storage performance

Kexin Zhang,Jie Song,Ce Liang,Kaifeng Yu

To overcome the performance bottleneck caused by the single-structure optimization of TiO 2 -based anode materials and to explore a new approach for the resource utilization of agricultural waste, this study synthesized nano-TiO 2 particles (TiO 2 -NP) via a co-precipitation and hydrothermal method. Porous carbon spheres (CSHC) were prepared using discarded corn stalk pith as a carbon source through a hydrothermal carbonization and high-temperature calcination coupling process. Subsequently, TiO 2 -NP was in situ grown onto CSHC, forming a nano-TiO 2 /corn stalk pith carbon sphere composite material (TiO 2 -NP/CSHC), thereby achieving the synergistic enhancement of nano-TiO 2 and biomass-derived carbon. This design not only alleviates the agglomeration of TiO 2 but also significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of the composite material via a three-dimensional conductive carbon network. The prepared TiO 2 -NP/CSHC exhibits a high specific surface area of 101.2 m 2  g −1 and a well-developed porous structure, delivering excellent lithium and sodium storage performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). At a current density of 0.2C, after 100 cycles, the discharge specific capacities were maintained at 1182.5 mA h g −1 and 675.3 mA h g −1 , respectively. Through the structural and functional synergy of TiO 2 -NP and CSHC, the composite material simultaneously achieves high capacity, long cycling stability, and fast charge/discharge capability, while also offering environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Coupling of bowl-like VS2 nanosheet arrays and carbon nanofiber enables ultrafast Na+-Storage and robust flexibility for sodium-ion hybrid capacitors

Dongming Xu,Huanwen Wang,Ruyun Qiu,Qiang Wang,Zhifei Mao,Yingjun Jiang,Rui Wang,Beibei He,Yansheng Gong,Debao Li,Xianluo Hu

Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) show great promise due to their combination of high energy-storage properties and low cost of Na resources. Yet most anodes in SIHCs suffer from sluggish Na + -diffusion kinetics and relatively low specific capacity, which restrict their widespread development. Herein, bowl-like VS 2 nanosheet arrays are uniformly and robustly anchored on a carbon nanofiber (CNF) substrate through a one-step solvothermal method. The bowl-like VS 2 is featured with an ultrathin thickness (several atomic layers), intrinsically metallic conductivity and an interconnected array architecture. This unique structural design can not only facilitate ultrafast Na + ion-diffusion, but also suppress capacity decay of VS 2 that is caused by the conversion process below 0.3 V. DFT calculations demonstrate a faster Na + transport rate and a lower diffusion energy barrier for the VS 2 /C interface than for the VS 2 /VS 2 bilayer. The quasi-solid-state SIHC full cell that integrates the CNF@VS 2 anode and the graphene sheets-wrapped carbon nanofiber (CNF@GS) cathode, displays prominent energy//power densities in the voltage range of 0.0–4.0 V (116 Wh kg −1  at 0.4 kW kg −1 ; 66 Wh kg −1  at 40 kW kg −1 based on the total mass of both electrodes), outperforming recent SIHCs.

Tailoring the Boron Configurations in B-doped Na3V2(PO4)3@Carbon for Fast and Durable Sodium Storage

Dong Yan,Shuhao Xiao,Xinyan Li,Rui Wu,Jinxia Jiang,Xiaobin Niu,Jun Song Chen

Graphical Balancing act : Boron-doped Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 is synthesized through a facile electrospinning method. NVP@carbon with a balanced content of BCO 2 and BC 2 O exhibits the best sodium storage properties. BC 2 O mainly improves the sodium diffusion and BCO 2 enhances the structural stability. Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) is a widely studied cathode material for sodium-ion batteries because of its high ionic conductivity and attractive charge/discharge plateau (3.4 V vs. Na/Na + ). However, its poor electronic conductivity and severe volume expansion during sodium storage need to be addressed before its intensive application could be realized. Herein, boron-doped NVP was synthesized through a facile electrospinning method. By adding boric acid into the reaction mixture during electrospinning followed by carbonization, boron could be directly inserted into the carbon matrix, giving rise to B-doped carbon nanofiber wrapped NVP. By tuning the doping amount, the boron-containing configurations could be facilely manipulated, playing different roles in promoting the sodium storage properties of the composite. Based on the calculation results, BC 2 O enhanced sodium diffusion by lowering the energy barrier, while BCO 2 improved the structural stability. Due to these specific functionalities of the configurations, the as-prepared composite with a balanced amount of BC 2 O and BCO 2 demonstrated superior sodium storage capacity of 113 mAh g −1 at 1 C, outstanding long cycling performance of 103 mAh g −1 at 10 C, and retained 91 mAh g −1 after 1500 cycles. This gave rise to a capacity loss of only 0.08‰ per cycle, much better than the undoped counterpart.

A flexible CNT@nickel silicate composite film for high-performance sodium storage

Ziyue Zhou,Wenping Si,Pengyi Lu,Wenlei Guo,Lei Wang,Tao Zhang,Feng Hou,Ji Liang

Due to the sufficient ion diffusion channels provided by the large interlayer spacing, layered silicates are widely considered as potential anode materials for lithium ion and sodium ion batteries . However, due to the poor electronic conductivity , the application of layered silicates for electrochemical energy storage has been greatly limited. Carbon nanotube (CNT) film has excellent electrical conductivity and a unique interconnected network, making it an ideal matrix for composite electrochemical material. We herein report a CNT@nickel silicate composite film (CNT@NiSiO) fabricated by a SiO 2 -mediated hydrothermal conversion process, for sodium storage with excellent electrochemical properties. The obtained composite possesses a cladding structure with homogeneous nanosheets as the outermost and CNT film as the inner network matrix, providing abundant ion diffusion channels, high electronic conductivity, and good mechanical flexibility. Due to these merits, this material possesses an excellent electrochemical performance for sodium storage, including a high specific capacity up to 390 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 , good rate performance up to 205 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 , and excellent cycling stability. On this basis, this work would bring a promising material for various energy storage devices and other emerging applications.

Space and interface confinement effect of necklace-box structural FeS2/WS2 carbon nanofibers to enhance Na+ storage performance and electrochemical kinetics

Huayu Wu,Nuo Xu,Zhouheng Jiang,Anyu Zheng,Qiaofang Shi,Rongguan Lv,Lubin Ni,Guowang Diao,Ming Chen

Necklace-box structural FeS 2 /WS 2 carbon nano-composite fibers (NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs) are fabricated by electrospinning-sulfuration-hydrothermal process. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit the spatial confined structure, which is able to restrain volume expansion effectively in the process of Na + intercalation/deintercalation and improve the cycling stability and rate performance. NB FeS 2 /WS 2 -CNFs exhibit remarkable initial coulombic efficiency (ICE = 87.0%) and stable long cycle (~422.6 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles) for sodium storage capability. The heterojunction interface between FeS 2 and WS 2 can alleviate the damage of the micro-crystal plane and enhance electrochemical kinetic process. The structure evolution and mechanism of sodium storage are explored by ex-situ methods, which further confirm the spatial and interface confinement effect distinctly. In addition, the electrochemical kinetic properties of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are compared, thereby revealing the energy storage mechanism and different ion migration modes of the three batteries. This work provides a guide for the synthesis of bimetallic compounds based on the spatial confinement and heterojunction interface confined strategy that efficiently improves energy storage performance of electrode material.

Facile Synthesis of FeP-Decorated Heteroatomic-Doped Onion-like Carbon Nanospheres for Pseudocapacitance Enhanced Sodium Storage

Hafiz Muhammad Saleem,Mahmood Jamil,Mohammad Tabish,Asif Hussain Khoja,Ang Li,Dengke Wang,Huaihe Song

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs), such as iron phosphide (FeP), are currently being contemplated as favorable high-performance anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity, cost-effectiveness, and availability. However, the inadequate electrochemical reaction dynamics and abrupt volumetric expansion of TMPs during cycling related to inferior conductivity constrain their commercial applications. Herein, we synthesized N,P-codoped onion-like carbon (NP-OLC)-encapsulated FeP (FeP@NP-OLC) using a simple injection pyrolysis method, followed by a successive low-temperature phosphidation treatment. NP-OLC, apart from constraining the volume variation of FeP, also encourages electron transfer to enhance the reversibility of FeP@C during the repeated cycling processes. Advancing from the distinctive onion-like structure, the FeP@NP-OLC nanospheres demonstrate outstanding sodium storage capability in terms of high capacity (543 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 at over 500 cycles), superb rate capacity (544 mAh g–1 at 2 A g–1), and long cyclic life (560 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1 over 1100 cycles). The exceptional electrochemical performance is correlated to the meaningful involvement of pseudocapacitive behavior through the charge–discharge procedure, specifically at a high rate. Experimental results and theoretical calculations showed that the FeP and carbon interface with a defect can improve charge transfer and strengthen collaboration regarding active nanoparticles and sodium atoms, thereby boosting sodium storage. This facile strategy can be used to prepare other onion-like carbon-coated TMPs for future energy storage of commercial SIBs.

Constructing a novel heterostructure of NiSe2/CoSe2 nanoparticles with boosted sodium storage properties for sodium-ion batteries

Hui Zheng,Jianyi Wang,Hongwei Li,Shuqi Deng,Yinze Zuo,Wei Yan,Jiujun Zhang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are among the most promising technologies for large-scale clean electrical energy storage and conversion. Developing SIB anode materials, which pose the major limitation in achieving high performance, including transition metal selenides (TMSe) with high sodium storage capacities is currently the cutting-edge research. In this paper, heterostructured NiSe2/CoSe2 nanoparticles are successfully synthesized by simple thermal selenization of a heterojuncted Ni(OH)2/Co(OH)2 precursor obtained through one-step solvothermal co-precipitation. Electrochemical tests and DFT calculations as well as in situ XRD measurements are used for investigating the Na storage properties and understanding the underlying mechanism. It is found that the heterointerface formed at the crystalline planes of NiSe2 and CoSe2 significantly improves the electron conductivity and optimizes the Na species adsorption, which accelerates electrochemical reaction kinetics and thus improves pseudocapacitive contribution. Therefore, the as-prepared NiSe2/CoSe2 nanoparticles exhibit superior Na storage properties such as enhanced Na storage capacity and rate capability as well as exceptional cycling stability at ultra-high current density.

Suppressing H2 evolution by using a hydrogel for reversible Na storage in Na3V2(PO4)3

Xianying Fan,Xiaoyu Gao,Xuan Zhang,Guijia Cui,Huichao Lu,Zhixin Xu,Jun Yang

We report a low-cost hydrogel electrolyte by adding 3 wt% poly(acrylate sodium) (PAAS) into 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, which achieves a widened electrochemical stability window (ESW) of 2.45 V on stainless steel current collector from 2.12 V in 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous electrolytes (AE). Moreover, the H2 evolution potential reaches −1.75 V vs. Ag/AgCl on titanium current collector. The results reveal that the polymer network structure of PAAS has the ability to interact with water molecules and thus the hydrogen evolution reaction can be limited effectively, which broadens the ESW of aqueous electrolyte and allows the reversible Na-ion intercalation/deintercalation of Na3V2(PO4)3 as an anode material in aqueous electrolyte reported for the first time.

Engineering Pore Architecture in Hard Carbon for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries: Distinguishing the Contributions of Ultramicropores and Closed Pores

Qingjuan Ren,Jianzeng Yang,Peng Zhang,Liang He,Zhongyu Sun,Ruirui Hao,Zhiqiang Shi

Hard carbon (HC) stands as a leading anode candidate for sodium-ion batteries, yet the specific functions of its multiscale pore structure, especially ultramicropores (< 0.7 nm), have remained contentious. Herein, the distinct functions of different pores (open pores, sub-0.7 nm ultramicropores, and closed pores) are elucidated through the rational design of model HC materials derived from a homologous zinc gluconate. It is demonstrated that closed pores (2–3 nm) serve as the dominant contributor to the low-voltage plateau capacity via quasi-metallic sodium cluster formation. Ultramicropores significantly enhance the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE, up to 93.5%) by enabling selective desolvated Na + access while restricting electrolyte ingress, though they contribute only secondarily to the plateau capacity via adsorption. In contrast, open pores exacerbate irreversible electrolyte decomposition, impairing ICE. The optimized material, ZHC600-1300, delivers a high reversible capacity of 414.8 mAh g −1 , an exceptional ICE of 93.1%, a superior plateau capacity (306 mAh g −1 ), and remarkable cycling stability. When configured in full cells, it delivers a high energy density of 321.5 Wh kg −1 , demonstrating great potential for practical applications. This work provides fundamental insights into pore-dependent sodium storage mechanisms and establishes a design principle for high-performance HC anodes.

Enhanced sodium storage kinetics of nitrogen rich cellulose-derived hierarchical porous carbon via subsequent boron doping

Kui Cui,Chao Wang,Yun Luo,Lin Li,Jing Gao,Wenyan Chen,Wenfan Xu,Yinhua Liu,Zhiyuan Ma,Xianfen Wang

Doping engineering is of great importance in adjusting the electronic conductivity, structural defects and energy storage performance of carbonaceous materials. Herein, a stepwise heteroatoms doping engineering is designed to modify cellulose-derived hierarchical porous carbons (HPC) with rich nitrogen (N@HPC) and subsequent boron (B@N@HPC). The effect of boron doping on nitrogen rich HPC is investigated to reveal the evolution of microstructures, porosity, surface area, and chemical groups. It is found that boron doping cannot further change the interlayer distance of nitrogen-rich HPC, but B@N@HPC exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as an anode in sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Compared with N@HPC, B@N@HPC anodes show a larger capacity of 308 mAh g −1 at 0.02 A g −1 , which is 137% larger than that of nitrogen doped HPC. Electrochemical Kinetics analysis through galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) suggests a capacitive-dominated process combined with a higher Na + diffusion coefficient and lower charge transfer resistance for the B@N@HPC than that of N@HPC. The effect of boron doping on the carbon anodes can be taken to explore an enhanced performance for SIBs.
