Synthesis of MoS2@MoO3/(Cu+/g-C3N4) ternary composites with double S-scheme heterojunction for peroxymonosulfate activation exposing to visible light

Chuangbin Hong,Wenguang Wang,Liangpeng Wu,Jiehang Zhou,Shimin Long,Wentao Zhou,Yuxi Guo

The construction of semiconductor heterojunction is an effective way for charge separation in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. In this study, a novel MoS 2 @MoO 3 /(Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 ) ternary composites (MMCCN) was prepared via a simple calcination method. The as-prepared composites exhibited exceptional performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). The activity testing results indicated that 99.41 % of RhB (10 mg·L −1 , 10 mL) was effectively removed by the synergistic effect of composites photocatalyst (0.1 g·L −1 ) and PMS (0.1 g·L −1 ) under visible light irradiation for 40 min. Its reaction rate constant exceeded that of Cu + /g-C 3 N 4 , MoO 3 and MoS 2 by a factor of 3.56, 17.30 and 11.73 times, respectively. The crystal structure, band gap and density of states (DOS) of the semiconductors were calculated according to the density functional theory (DFT). Free radical trapping tests and electron spin resonance spectroscopy validated that 1 O 2 , O 2 − and h + are primary reactive species participating in the decomposition of RhB. The ternary composites demonstrated good stability and maintained excellent degradation efficiency even across four reaction cycles. Furthermore, the activation mechanism and the intermediates produced during the decomposition course of RhB by MMCCN/PMS/vis system were analyzed and elucidated. A double S-scheme heterojunctions was responsible for efficient separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. This work presents a novel method in the construction of double S-scheme heterojunctions for PMS activation which is expected to find wide applications in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Interfacial engineering of CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure for enhancing electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia

Fangwei Ma,Xiaoyang Yang,Wei Jiang,Xin Cui,Guangping Lei,Haoyu Qiu,Zeyi Liu,Jiafeng Wan,Yi-Fu Liu

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (e-NO3RR) to ammonia not only can effectively remove nitrate pollutants but also is a green strategy for ammonia synthesis. However, the conversion from NO3− to NH3 involves some undesired by-products and severe competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), limiting its further development. Herein, the rodlike CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2 heterostructure with rich interfaces is easily designed via hydrothermal followed by gas-phase sulfurization method for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction to NH3. Benefiting from the interface effect, the optimal CoMoO4@MoS2/CoS2-5 exhibits an excellent e-NO3RR performance with a high NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.11% and an NH3 yield rate of 0.45 mmol h−1 mgcat−1 at −0.8 V (vs RHE), which is superior to that of CoMoO4 and MoS2/CoS2. The validation experiments suggest that the heterointerface can inhibit the generation of by-products and competing HER, and greatly facilitate the hydrogenation process.

Molybdenum-supported amorphous MoS3 catalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution in solar-water-splitting devices

Bofei Liu,Zhonghua Jin,Lisha Bai,Junhui Liang,Qixing Zhang,Ning Wang,Caichi Liu,Changchun Wei,Ying Zhao,Xiaodan Zhang

We report molybdenum (Mo) metal-supported amorphous molybdenum sulfide (a-MoS3) catalysts with a porous and nanostructure nature, which exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in wired solar-water-splitting devices. Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts were prepared by wet chemically synthesizing a-MoS3 nanoparticles at room-temperature and then loading with Earth-abundant and scalable Mo metals sputtered at low temperature (100 °C). Electrochemical studies and applications in wired photoelectrochemical/photovoltaic (PEC–PV) solar-water-splitting devices reveal that the HER performance of wired PEC–PV solar-water-splitting devices can be efficiently enhanced with the proposed highly conductive Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts by enlarging the electrochemically active areas, accelerating the electron transport to active sites, and improving the charge transfer at the catalysts/electrolyte interfaces. The low-temperature preparation of highly active Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts paves the way to integrating them into various high-performance PV devices to develop highly efficient, scalable, low-cost, and monolithic PEC–PV solar-water-splitting devices.

Metaphosphate-quartz-assisted volatilization roasting: An innovative approach for streamlined production of high-purity MoO3 from low-grade molybdenite concentrates with enhanced molybdenum recovery

Hu Sun,Mengyu You,Zhuoxun Yang,Bingbing Liu,Yanfang Huang,Guihong Han

Existing methods for producing pure MoO 3 from low-grade molybdenite concentrates suffers from complex unit operations, suboptimal metal recovery, excessive reagent/energy consumption, and substantial wastewater generation. This work presents a novel metaphosphate-quartz-assisted volatilization roasting process for the direct preparation of pure MoO 3 from pelletized low-grade molybdenite concentrates. Single-factor experiments demonstrated that the addition of Al(PO 3 ) 3 and quartz significantly increased molybdenum recovery (by over 25 %) while maintaining pellet structural integrity during roasting. The optimal result—97.1 % molybdenum volatilization efficiency—was achieved under the following conditions: a mass ratio of ore: Al(PO 3 ) 3 : quartz = 1: 0.2: 0.2, and temperature-programmed oxidative roasting from 900 °C to 1050 °C for 65 min. Additionally, the crystallized MoO 3 volatile exhibited a high purity of 99.9 % and was further upgraded to 99.99 % purity through a simple water washing. The intensification of molybdenum separation was attributed to two primary mechanisms: (i) Al(PO 3 ) 3 triggered decomposition reactions of molybdates, releasing volatile MoO 3 ; (ii) quartz expansion and interconnected pyrophosphate/phosphate networks maintained a mechanically robust yet porous structure that enabled efficient MoO 3 transfer while reducing vapor contamination caused by dust. In general, the new approach can overcome the negative effects derived from impurities, and offers significant advantages, including much fewer procedures, lower reagent consumption, zero wastewater discharge, and high molybdenum recovery.

Synthesis of yolk–shell spheres based on molybdenum diselenide-encapsulated molybdenum oxide for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xiaohong Xia,Chunming Wang,Lang Liu,Yonglin Du,Weichun Ye

Transition metal dichalcogenides for electrocatalytic water splitting are important in renewable energy research, with studies showing that the edge structure and specific surface area are crucial to their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, the design and construction of yolk–shell nanospheres based on molybdenum diselenide-encapsulated molybdenum oxide are reported. Their structures were characterized using various techniques, which showed that the void space between the interior core and outer shell increased the number of active sites. This yolk–shell structure exhibited enhanced and stable electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The HER current density at −0.5 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode was increased by 95% (to −256 mA cm−2) compared to that of traditional flower-like molybdenum diselenide. The overpotential of this yolk–shell structure, which was required to drive a current density of −10 mA cm−2, was 65 mV lower than that of flower-like molybdenum diselenide (286 mV). Furthermore, long-term potential cycling and potentiostatic measurement of this catalyst showed favorable stability and durability of electrocatalytic activity. This yolk–shell structure plays a key role in energy conversion processes central to several renewable energy technologies.

Synergistic hydrazine-driven regulation and Mo/S co-doping to endow BiOBr with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Zhengjie Su,Binghong Wu,Dong-Hau Kuo,Longyan Chen,Pengkun Zhang,Baoqian Yang,Xinru Wu,Dongfang Lu,Jinguo Lin,Xiaoyun Chen

Herein, we demonstrate a Mo/S co-doped BiOBr-based bimetal bismuth sulfur-oxybromide (Mo/S-BiOBr) catalyst with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHER) via a facile method. Mo/S co-doping adjusts the energy band structure of BiOBr and expands its visible light absorption. Hydrazine regulates the molybdenum with heterovalent states while endowing Mo/S-BiOBr with oxygen vacancy defects to balance the valence-charge deviations from electrical neutrality induced by Mo6+ → Mo4+. These oxygen-vacancy defects act as active sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H–O–H bond to produce protons for hydrogen generation. The heterovalent Mo6+/Mo4+ states act as photogenerated electron hosts to hop fast between Mo6+ and Mo4+, facilitating efficient electron transfer for the PHER. The hybridization between S 3p and O 2p orbitals improves the stability of continuous PHER. The hydrazine-regulated Mo/S-BiOBr-3 with an optimal n(Mo4+)/n(Mo4+ + Mo6+) ratio and abundant oxygen vacancy defects exhibit an excellent PHER activity of 710.5 μmol h−1 at a catalyst weight of 50 mg and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.9% at 420 nm. After six recycles, the H2 yield of Mo/S-BiOBr-3 decreased by only about 3.5%, indicating its good stability and durability. This work provides a practical approach to using bismuth-based oxyhalides in the PHER.

MoS2 Nanosheets Functionalized Multichannel Hollow Mo2N/Carbon Nanofibers as a Robust Bifunctional Catalyst for Water Electrolysis

Dengyu Xie,Guang Yang,Deshuang Yu,Yanan Hao,Silin Han,Yafei Cheng,Feng Hu,Linlin Li,Huaixin Wei,Changchun Ji,Shengjie Peng

Herein, a heterogeneous system composed of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets functionalized multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers containing Mo2N (Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs) was successfully developed for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The obtained Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs manifests superior performance with improved durableness for electrocatalysis. Independently, at 10 mA cm–2, the optimal Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs achieves overpotentials (η10) of 131 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER. The intimate interaction between the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets array and 1D multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers Mo2N (Mo2N/Carbon MCNFs) advances better exposure of dynamic heterointerfaces, improves the conductivity of electron transfer, and enriches active sites with efficient mass transport. When employed to drive the water electrolysis, Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs also demonstrates a modest overall potential of merely 1.63 V to hit 10 mA cm–2. This study will provide a well-designed structure and development for functional materials in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Laser-assisted coupling of nitrogen-doped carbon-coated molybdenum/molybdenum dioxide rods for efficient pH-universal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis

Guang Yang,Yihang Guo,Xiangjie Bo

Herein, a simple and fast laser-assisted coupling method is used for preparation of rod-like carbon-coated Mo/MoO 2 hybrids at room temperature and air environment. Under high energy of laser and reductive atmosphere caused by precursor decomposition, Mo-polydopamine complex-wrapped MoO 3 rods are quickly converted into nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Mo/MoO 2 rods. Carbon-coated Mo/MoO 2 exhibits high surface area, uniform metal dispersion and appealing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance in a wide pH range. Carbon-coated Mo/MoO 2 shows overpotential of 134, 108 and 164 mV to deliver current density of 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline, acidic and neutral solution, respectively. Theoretical calculation demonstrates that combination of Mo and MoO 2 into Mo/MoO 2 composite favors the dissociation of water and adsorption of hydrogen. This study not only provides a high-efficiency strategy for preparation of electrocatalysts but also give guidance for development of hybrid electrocatalysts for HER.

Enhanced Ammonia Synthesis by Mo2+-Rich Graphene-Based Nanocomposite

Shanshan Niu,Lei-Lei Qian,Pan Du,Nan Si,Dawei Jiang,Yan Feng,Bin Huang,Xiaomin Gu,Qiang Zhao,Jiao Ji,Hua Zhu

Graphene coupling molybdenum-based nanocomposite structures were synthesized by changing the pyrolytic temperature to implement the molybdenum-based optimized microstructure. The structural and surface properties tests showed that the presence of the most variable species and a high proportion of divalent molybdenum on the surface of the material could effectively expose catalytic sites to improve reduction ability of N 2 and inhibited hydrogen evolution reaction. Electrochemical investigations indicated that the Mo-700/rGO nanocomposite exhibited a significantly enhanced electrochemical ammonia synthesis performance. In 0.05 M H 2 SO 4 , the Mo-700/rGO electrode achieved a Faradic efficiency of 12.7% at − 0.15 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and an ammonia yield of 3.93 μ g h − 1 cm − 2 at − 0.2 V versus RHE.

Mo propellant boosting the activity of Ni-P for efficient urea-assisted water electrolysis of hydrogen evolution

Linwei Jiang,Yichen Pan,Jiancheng Zhang,Xin Chen,Xinwen Ye,Zhendong Li,Caicai Li,Qingfeng Sun

Replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with thermodynamically favorable urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is an appealing tactic in the energy-saving water splitting system. Herein, by a facile composite electrodeposition method, an electrocatalyst with Mo particles anchored on the Ni-P matrix (Mo/Ni-P) was fabricated and utilized for urea-assisted water electrolysis of hydrogen production. As expected, the urea-involved electrolytic cell with the as-obtained Mo/Ni-P served as both the anode and cathode merely needs a voltage of 1.55 V to sustain a current density of 50 mA cm −2 (0.16 V less than that of the conventional water splitting at 50 mA cm −2 ) and can maintain the stability for 12 h. Additionally, the solar-driven urea-assisted water electrolysis system was constructed under lab conditions and solar-hydrogen-electricity energy conversion processes were also simulated. Moreover, it was demonstrated that tungsten (W) particles can also serve as an accelerant for promotion both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and UOR activity of pristine Ni-P. This work will present a facile method for rational integration of metal particles with Ni-P layer for highly efficient electrocatalysts applied in economic production of H 2 .

One-pot preparation of three-dimensional macroporous phosphomolybdic acid-MoS2-reduced graphene oxide hybrid for electrochemical detection of nitrite

Hui Xu,Guangran Ma,Meijuan Wu,Xia Peng,Lin Wang,Fugang Xu

In this study, a new hybrid PMA-MoS2-rGO composed of phosphomolybdic acid (PMA), MoS2, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was prepared for sensitive electrochemical detection of nitrite. The hybrid was prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal reaction, and PMA was introduced as active species for catalytic oxidation of nitrite and Mo source of MoS2. The structure and component of the product were characterized by SEM, Raman and EDS, and its catalysis toward nitrite oxidation was investigated by several electrochemical methods. The results revealed the hybrid composed of flower-sphere-like MoS2 interwind with rGO sheet while PMA doped in them, forming a three-dimensional porous structure. The MoS2 flower-sphere greatly reduced the aggregation of rGO and increased active surface area of the hybrid. Introducing rGO improved the conductivity and greatly enhanced the catalytic current. PMA played a dominate role in catalytic oxidation of nitrite. Owning to these synergy interactions, the hybrid exhibited greatly enhanced catalysis for nitrite oxidation than MoS2 or PMA-MoS2. The hybrid was used for fabricating a nitrite electrochemical sensor, which showed a linear rang of 0.5 μM to 8000 μM and a LOD of 0.2 μM (S/N=3). The sensor also showed good selectivity and stability with satisfactory recoveries for real sample test. The PMA-MoS2-rGO hybrid with easy preparation, porous structure, high stability and good catalysis holds great potential in environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, and so on.

In situ preparation of molybdenum-dioxide-incorporated carbonized silk fiber and its application in supercapacitors

Ji Yansong,Zhang Xiaoning,Zhu Yong,Norton Michael L.,Shen Lunfu,Tan Wenhui,Zheng Xi,Li Shuo

A previous study found that the capacitive behavior of nanoparticles fed to the silkworm can be delivered to carbonized silk fibers, which can be used to fabricate electrodes for the construction of flexible supercapacitors. However, the tendency of nanoparticles to aggregate decreases the quantity of nanoparticles that enter the silk and therefore reduces the capacitance performance of the prepared carbonized silk. Here, we sprayed ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate (AMT) on the surface of mulberry leaves used for feeding silkworms and investigated the effect of feeding AMT on the growth of silkworms and the properties of spun silk. The precursor incorporated into the silk was converted into scattered MoO2 NPs, which were embedded within the carbonized silk fiber (CSF) via carbothermal reduction. The specific capacitance of CSF obtained from silkworms fed with an aqueous solution of AMT-treated mulberry leaves reached up to 298 F/g at 0.2 g/A, which is much higher than that of the control group (102 F/g). Since AMT is highly water-soluble, and its concentration can be easily modulated, we believe that the proposed strategy is feasible for the large-scale fabrication of CSF with enhanced capacitive performance.
