Stepwise Preparation of Uniform-Size Ultrafine Pt Nanoparticles for High-Performance Catalysis of Methanol Oxidation and Nitrophenol Reduction

Wei Li,Liang Xian,Yamin Zhao,Chufeng Sun

Ultrafine Pt nanoparticles (Pt UPs) were prepared using a stepwise modulation approach, ensuring consistent reaction kinetics throughout each step to achieve uniform size and high dispersion of Pt UPs. The morphology of the Pt nanoparticle was precisely controlled by managing the reaction conditions at each step, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity of the Pt metals. In order to form photoinduced hydrolysis products with different dispersions and particle sizes, two steps were conducted. First, homogeneously dispersed photoinduced hydrolysis products were adsorbed on nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes using ice photochemistry under stabilizer-free conditions. Second, these products were photoinduced by using different wavelengths of light. Subsequent in situ reduction with various reducing agents influenced the composition, particle size, and dispersion degree of the Pt UPs. Furthermore, the subtle charge transfer between the supporter and Pt was adjusted by employing low- and high-temperature nitrogen doping methods, resulting in Pt UPs with electron-deficient and electron-rich charge structures on the surface. This study offers insights into the precise modulation of the Pt nanoscale morphology and reveals the subtle adjustments in charge transfer between the supporter and the metal through nitrogen doping. Additionally, the origin of the catalytic activity of Pt in various reactions was explored.

Phase transfer-based high-efficiency recycling of precious metal electrocatalysts

Qing Zeng,Shaonan Tian,Yu Zhang,Hui Liu,Dong Chen,Xinlong Tian,Chaoquan Hu,Jun Yang

Recycling precious metals with high-efficiency is undoubtedly beneficial to optimize resource utilization for environmental remediation and sustainable development. Herein, we report an efficient route to recycle the palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts using a phase transfer method. This strategy involves acidic dissolution of deactivated precious metal (Pd/Pt) electrocatalysts from their loading substrates, mixing with an ethanolic solution of dodecylamine (DDA), subsequent extraction of metal ions into a non-polar organic phase, and final reduction by sodium borohydride to reproduce high-performance electrocatalysts towards typical electrochemical reactions, e.g. , oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). In specific, the transfer efficiencies are up to 98% and the final recovery rate is over 85% for Pd and Pt electrocatalysts in each cycle. This approach symbolizes a facile and efficient way to recover precious metals, which might be applied to recycling a wide range of metals in various realms after appropriate modifications.

BUB1B promotes cisplatin resistance in gastric cancer via Rad51-mediated DNA damage repair

Zhe Qin,Fangzhou Ye,Jiayi Wang,Jun Jiang,Xiaohong Zhang,Huanqing Li,Li Feng

Background Cisplatin resistance significantly impedes the treatment of gastric cancer (GC). This work examined the possible therapeutic target status and function of BUB1B in controlling cisplatin resistance. Methods Following the identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis was conducted using datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas-stomach adenocarcinoma (TCGA-STAD), GSE51575, and GSE79973. Functional tests assessed the effect of BUB1B overexpression and knockdown on the GC cells. Enrichment analysis and RNA-seq identified pathways linked to BUB1B . Additionally, the function of BUB1B in GC cells resistant to cisplatin in regulating DNA repair was examined, as its relationship with Rad51 inhibitor (B02) in regulating cell cycle, proliferation, and apoptosis. The combined effects of Rad51 suppression and BUB1B overexpression on tumor development in cisplatin-resistant GC cells were further validated in vivo xenograft models. Results Significant overexpression of six critical overlapping genes was seen in GC tissues. The GC cell invasion, migration, and proliferation processes were improved by BUB1B overexpression, whereas BUB1B knockdown prevented these outcomes. Genes involved in DNA repair were downregulated by BUB1B knockdown, according to an RNA-seq study. BUB1B overexpression boosted cell survival via modulating cell cycle proteins, but BUB1B knockdown hampered DNA repair and increased death in cisplatin-resistant GC cells. Overexpression of BUB1B enhanced tumor development in vivo and counteracted the inhibitory effects of B02 on cell growth. Conclusion BUB1B enhances cisplatin resistance in gastric cancer by regulating DNA repair and cell cycle progression, suggesting that targeting BUB1B may be a feasible therapeutic strategy.

Effect of Metal Precursors on the Performance of Pt/SAPO-11 Catalysts for n-Dodecane Hydroisomerization

Lili Geng,Jianjun Gong,Guilong Qiao,Songshou Ye,Jinbao Zheng,Nuowei Zhang,Binghui Chen

Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2, Pt(NH3)4(Ac)2, (NH4)2PtCl4, and H2PtCl6 were used to prepare Pt/SAPO-11 catalysts to investigate the effect of Pt precursors on the hydroisomerization of n-dodecane. The catalyst derived from Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2 displays the best hydroisomerization activity and selectivity among these precursors. The hydroisomerization conversion of n-dodecane is affected by the platinum particle size, platinum dispersion, the location of platinum, and the valence state of platinum. The selectivity of n-dodecane is determined by the number of Brønsted acid sites and Pt crystal planes. These conclusions are verified by combining transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, hydrogen temperature programmed reduction, NH3-temperature programmed desorption, and Py-IR studies. The catalyst prepared with Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2 as the precursor exhibits the smallest platinum particle size and the highest platinum dispersion. Most of the platinum particles are supported on the external surface of SAPO-11 with the Pt(111) crystal face. Such a catalyst also possesses a suitable number of Brønsted acid sites and then displays the best catalytic performance. Obviously, the use of various precursors for the Pt-based catalyst can significantly affect the performance of Pt/SAPO-11 for the hydroisomerization of n-dodecane.

Boron carbon nitride as efficient oxygen reduction reaction support

Fang Liu,Dazhi Gao,Fangqing Wang,Pengcheng Shen,Yang Liu,Shiqing Zhang,Ying Li,Jun Zhang,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang

The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for energy conversion systems such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries . Boron carbon nitrogen (BCN) is a novel functional material with a high specific surface area , excellent corrosion resistance , and outstanding electrochemical stability. These properties make BCN an effective ORR catalyst and a promising support for metal catalysts . This study leveraged the strong interaction between BCN and metals to anchor platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) onto the BCN surface (Pt/BCN), significantly enhancing the durability of traditional Pt/C catalysts in ORR. The half-wave potential of Pt/BCN is 0.927 V, higher than Pt/XC-72R (0.857 V) and commercial Pt/C (0.879 V). Notably, after 10,000 durability test cycles, the mass activity (MA) of Pt/XC-72R and commercial Pt/C decreased by 67 % and 75 %, respectively. Even after 50,000 cycles, Pt/BCN exhibited only a 54 % decrease in MA. Experimental data and density functional theory calculations confirmed increased electron transfer from Pt to the BCN support, indicating a strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) between Pt and BCN. This strong EMSI effectively anchored the Pt NPs, preventing migration and aggregation during the ORR process. Consequently, our research introduces a novel electrocatalyst support material with significant potential for ORR and broader applications.

Manipulating electron redistribution in platinum for enhanced alkaline water splitting kinetics

Wensheng Zhang,Xu Chen,Jinyu Zhao,Lin Niu,Guipeng Wang,Xiaomin Wang

The potential of hydrogen production via water splitting technology makes it urgent to develop low-cost and highly active bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). In this study, a low platinum (Pt) bimetallic phosphide heterostructure (Pt-NiFe-P/NF), derived from three-dimensional NiFe metal–organic framework (NiFe-MOF) nanorods on nickel foam (NF), was developed using a two-step hydrothermal and phosphorization process. The nickel-iron phosphide nanorod array heterostructure boasts a large surface area with numerous active sites, which enhances charge and substance transfer. The integration of metallic Pt with NiFe-P heterostructures subtly adjusts the electronic redistribution between them, thereby improving the kinetics of water splitting. Consequently, the Pt-NiFe-P/NF catalyst demonstrated exceptional HER and OER performance in a 1 M KOH solution, with overpotentials of 97 and 266 mV at 100 mA cm−2, respectively. Remarkably, an electrolyzer utilizing this catalyst requires just a 1.65 V potential to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2, exceeding the capabilities of conventional Pt/C||RuO2 systems, which require 2.10 V and outperforming many advanced electrochemical water splitting catalysts currently in use.

One-pot synthesis of platinum–palladium–cobalt alloyed nanoflowers with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethylene glycol oxidation

Pei Song,Lei Liu,Ai-Jun Wang,Xi Zhang,Si-Yuan Zhou,Jiu-Ju Feng

In this work, three-dimensional trimetallic Pt–Pd–Co alloyed nanoflowers are fabricated by a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy, with the assistance of oleylamine as the solvent, surfactant, and reducing agents, along with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as the co-surfactant and shape-directing agents. Their morphology and crystal structure were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) in details. The respective electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) is estimated to be 32.53   m 2   g −1 , and current density is 132.91   mA   cm −2 for the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG). These values are much higher than those of PtPdCo nanoparticles, PtPd nanoparticles, commercial Pt black, and Pd black under the identical conditions, showing the improved catalytic activity of Pt–Pd–Co nanoflowers. The excellent performances are attributed to the specific structure and synergistic interactions of the trimetallic alloy. The as-prepared nanoflowers can serve as a promising electrocatalyst in fuel cells.

Enhancing the Electrocatalytic Property of Hollow Structured Platinum Nanoparticles for Methanol Oxidation Through A Hybrid Construction

Feng Yan,Liu Hui,Wang Pengfei,Ye Feng,Tan Qiangqiang,Yang Jun

The integration of different components into a hybrid nanosystem for the utilization of the synergistic effects is an effective way to design the electrocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate a hybrid strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic property of hollow structured Pt nanoparticles for methanol oxidation reaction. This strategy begins with the preparation of bimetallic Ag-Pt nanoparticles with a core-shell construction. Element sulfur is then added to transform the core-shell Ag-Pt nanostructures into hybrid nanodimers consisting of Ag 2 S nanocrystals and remaining Pt domains with intact hollow interiors (Ag 2 S-hPt). Finally, Au is deposited at the surface of the Ag 2 S domain in each hetero-dimer, resulting in the formation of ternary Ag 2 S-Au-hPt nanocomposites with solid-state interfaces. The ternary nanocomposites exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic property toward methanol oxidation due to the strong electronic coupling between Pt and other domains in the hybrid particles. The concept might be used toward the design and synthesis of other hetero-nanostructures with technological importance.

Enhanced separation of Pd(II) and Pt(IV) from hydrochloric acid aqueous solution using 2-((2-methoxyethyl)thio)-1H-benzimidazole

Feng Shao-Ping,Huang Kun

Abstract Separation of palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) by solvent extraction is difficult because of their extremely similar physicochemical properties. Development of new extractants with a high extraction efficiency and excellent separation selectivity is the primary focus for enhancing the separation of Pd and Pt by solvent extraction. In this study, a new extractant, 2-((2-methoxyethyl)thio)-1H-benzimidazole (MOBI), which contains N, S, and O atoms, was synthesized and used to separate Pd(II) and Pt(IV) from a hydrochloric acid aqueous solution. The experimental results revealed that Pd(II) and Pt(IV) were effectively separated under the optimal conditions: MOBI concentration of 0.005 mol·L −1 , HCl concentration of 0.2 mol·L −1 , organic/aqueous (O/A) phase ratio of 1.0, and contact time of 15 min. The separation coefficient between Pd(II) and Pt(IV) was 1246.40, which indicates that MOBI has a higher selectivity for Pd(II) than Pt(IV). In addition, the mechanism of coordination between Pd(II) and MOBI was demonstrated through the slope method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 13 C NMR). The results revealed that MOBI could coordinate with Pd(II) via the N atom in the benzimidazole ring of MOBI molecules to form [Pd(MOBI) 2 Cl 2 ] (O) . Graphic abstract

Influence of Acidity of Mesoporous ZSM-5-Supported Pt on Naphthalene Hydrogenation

Jiaojiao Liu,Huifang Zhang,Ningyue Lu,Xiaoliang Yan,Binbin Fan,Ruifeng Li

A series of mesoporous ZSM-5-x (x = Si/Al molar ratio) supports, possessing various Si/Al ratios, were prepared without using the secondary templates, and the influences of acidity of ZSM-5-x on catalytic performance of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples prepared by the conventional wetness impregnation in naphthalene hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that decreasing Si/Al ratios of mesoporous ZSM-5 supports promotes the dispersion of the supported Pt species, and the catalytic efficiencies of Pt/HZSM-5-x samples for naphthalene hydrogenation depend on the integrated effects of the Pt dispersion, the acidity, and the mesoporous structure of ZSM-5 supports. This work provides the detailed influences of acidity of mesoporous ZSM-5 on catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts in naphthalene hydrogenation.

Adsorption configuration control on Pt-Bi2O3 for the oriented conversion of glycerol to glyceric acid via terminal hydroxyl oxidation

Han-Yue Yang,Bin Sun,Xue Xiao,Xuan Ai,Rui-Bin Jiang,Pei Chen,Yu Chen

Glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production, can be efficiently converted into valuable chemicals through electrocatalytic reaction. In this study, platinum (Pt) nanocrystals decorated on bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) nanosheets (PtBi DONS) with an optimal Pt:Bi ratio of 1:1 were successfully synthesized using a galvanic replacement method. Pt 1 Bi 1 DONS exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic performance for glycerol electrooxidation, achieving an excellent catalytic activity (current of 0.82 A mg Pt –1 at 0.67 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and an exceptional selectivity of 96.6% for C 3 products, particularly glyceric acid. The superior performance stems from two key factors: (1) electron transfer from Bi 2 O 3 to Pt creates electron-rich Pt sites that suppress C–C bond cleavage and (2) Bi 2 O 3 facilitates favorable glycerol adsorption configurations through multiple hydroxyl group interactions. Mechanistic studies using operando spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the synergistic effect between Pt and Bi 2 O 3 promotes rapid charge transfer and stable intermediate formation. Moreover, PtBi DONS showed excellent versatility in oxidizing other polyols compared with monoalcohols.

Defect-Driven hydrogen Evolution: Enhanced hydrogen spillover on Pt-MoS2 interface via sulfur vacancies

Juan Du,Tianfeng Cai,Qiao Han,Hongda Wu,Qing Zhao,Lufan Zheng,Shuo Liu,Zhanxu Yang

The hydrogen spillover is considered a powerful strategy for improving the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the decoupling of hydrogen adsorption and desorption. However, the hydrogen spillover rate strongly depends on the metal-support interfaces, and the Fermi levels (E f ) difference between metal and support hinders the occurrence of hydrogen spillover. Here, we prepared platinum (Pt) doped on molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) with sulfur vacancies (Sv) catalyst (Pt/Sv-MoS 2 ) and investigated the internal relationship between metal-support interfaces and hydrogen spillover mechanism. The experimental and theoretical results show that sulfur (S) vacancies reduce the work function (ΔΦ) at the metal-support interface, thus accelerating the migration rate of hydrogen from Pt to Sv-MoS 2 . Meanwhile, the introduction of S vacancies promotes the high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) and weakens the electron supply from Pt to MoS 2 , facilitating active hydrogen (*H) adsorption step and thus increasing the hydrogen coverage on the Pt sites. Consequently, the prepared Pt/Sv-MoS 2 catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced HER activity, achieving an overpotential of 26 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and a Tafel slope of only 28 mV·dec −1 , which is superior to commercial 20 % Pt/C.
