Flexible copper conductors have been extensively utilized in flexible and wearable electronics. They can be fabricated by using a variety of patterning techniques such as vacuum deposition, photolithography, and various printing techniques. However, vacuum deposition and photolithography are costly and result in material wastage. Moreover, traditional printing inks require posttreatment, which can damage flexible substrates, or grafting polymers, which involve complex processes to adhere to flexible substrates. Therefore, this study proposes a facile method of fabricating flexible metal patterns with high electrical conductivities and remarkable bonding forces on a diverse range of flexible substrates. Catalytic ink was prepared by using a mixture of epoxy resin, copper nanopowder, and nanosilica. The ink was applied to a variety of flexible substrates, including a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film, polyimide film, and filter paper, using screen printing to establish a bridge layer for subsequent electroless deposition (ELD). The catalytic efficiency was significantly improved by treating the cured ink patterns with air plasma. The fabricated flexible metals exhibited excellent adhesion and desirable electrical conductivity. The sheet resistance of the copper layer on the PET substrate decreased to 9.2 mΩ/□ after 150 min of ELD. The resistance of the flexible metal on the PET substrate increased by only 3.125% after 5000 bending cycles. The flexible metals prepared in this study demonstrated good foldability, and the samples with filter paper and PET substrates failed after 40 and 70 folds, respectively. A pressure sensor with a bottom electrode consisting of a copper interdigital electrode on a PET substrate displayed favorable sensing performance.

Lignin is the renewable and abundant source of aromatics on earth, and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing valuable monophenols. In this work, catalytic hydrogenolysis of organosolv poplar lignin (OPL) in ethanol/isopropanol solvent over monometallic and bimetallic nonprecious catalysts was investigated. Ni/C and a series of NiCu/C catalyst with different Cu loadings were prepared and applied for depolymerization of OPL. The highest yield of phenolic monomers was 63.4 wt% achieved over the Ni 10 Cu 5 /C catalyst at 270 °C without external H 2 . The introduction of Cu in catalysts further promoted the hydrogen donor process of ethanol/isopropanol solvent and facilitated the cleavage of lignin linkages, resulting in the decreased molecular weight of bio-oil. The possible lignin dimer type structures, such as diphenylethane (β-1) type, phenylcoumaran (β-5) type, and pinoresinol (β-β) type structures, were proposed and identified by MALDI-TOF MS, giving a better understanding of the NiCu/C catalyzed lignin depolymerization.

Diffusion is one of the most critical factors which affect the performance of porous catalysts in heterogeneous reactions. Hollow spheres with a hierarchical structure could significantly improve the mass transfer in the spherical catalyst. Therefore, preparation of such kind of microspheres is an important work in the field of inorganic synthesis. Herein, we combine microfluidic technology and electroless deposition to prepare hollow Cu and CuOx microspheres with a hierarchically porous structure. These microspheres have a controllable diameter (100–500 μm) and shell thickness (10–60 μm). Numerical simulation and experimental results indicate that the hollow structure is beneficial for the diffusion and utilization of the catalyst in heterogeneous reactions. The Cu and CuOx microspheres were used to catalyze the hydrogenation and Fenton-like reactions in a flow reactor, respectively. The conversion of all reactants can reach more than 95%, and catalysts can maintain their reactivity in long reaction times. Thus, the strategy in the present research should apply in the construction of other porous catalysts with high performance.

In certain metalloenzymes, multimetal centers with appropriate primary/secondary coordination environments allow carbon–carbon coupling reactions to occur efficiently and with high selectivity. This same function is seldom realized in molecular electrocatalysts. Herein we synthesized rod-shaped nanocatalysts with multiple copper centers through the molecular assembly of a triphenylphosphine copper complex (CuPPh). The assembled molecular CuPPh catalyst demonstrated excellent electrochemical CO2 fixation performance in aqueous solution, yielding high-value C2+ hydrocarbons (ethene) and oxygenates (ethanol) as the main products. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and reaction intermediate capture, we established that the excellent catalytic performance originated from the large number of double copper centers in the rod-shaped assemblies. Cu–Cu distances in the absence of CO2 were as long as 7.9 Å, decreasing substantially after binding CO2 molecules indicating dynamic and cooperative function. The double copper centers were shown to promote carbon–carbon coupling via a CO2 transfer-coupling mechanism involving an oxalate (OOC–COO) intermediate, allowing the efficient production of C2+ products. The assembled CuPPh nanorods showed high activity, excellent stability, and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) to C2+ products (65.4%), with performance comparable to state-of-the-art copper oxide-based catalysts. To our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that harnessing metalloenzyme-like properties in molecularly assembled catalysts can greatly improve the selectivity of CO2RR, promoting the rational design of improved CO2 reduction catalysts.

Aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) is an important method for H 2 production, widely used in energy fields like polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, traditional noble metal catalysts , being expensive and vulnerable to CO poisoning, restrict their practical application. Therefore, developing robust non-noble metal catalysts for efficient and sustainable H 2 production with low CO levels in APRM at low temperatures is highly significant. In this study, a novel approach was employed to synthesize carbon-encapsulated Cu catalyst via controlled pyrolysis , leading to Cu@CA-Val catalyst with excellent low-temperature catalytic activity. The optimal Cu@CA-Val-300 catalyst exhibited a high hydrogen production rate of 0.2–27.0 μmolH 2 /g cat /s over a wide temperature of 135–180 °C (base-free), surpassing the most Cu-based and Pt-based catalysts. The Cu@CA-Val-300 catalyst exhibited exceptional hydrothermal stability during continuous operation in a fixed reactor for 200 h. Efficient H 2 production was attributed to good wettability , enabling the diffusion of CH 3 OH and H 2 O molecules into Cu + /Cu 0 sites for activation, with CO being suppressed and transformed through the formate formation.

Water oxidation presents a promising avenue for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production. However, the reliance on alkaline bicarbonate electrolytes as an intermediate has limitations, such as H 2 O 2 decomposition and a narrow pH effectiveness range (7–9), restricting its utility across wider pH ranges. This study unveils a crystal OH mediating pathway that stabilizes SO 4 OH* as a crucial intermediate. Basic copper carbonate (Cu 2 (OH) 2 CO 3 ) tablets, commonly found on cultural relics, exhibit the capability to generate H 2 O 2 in neutral or acidic non-bicarbonate electrolytes. By leveraging this crystal OH mediating strategy, considerable H 2 O 2 production in Na 2 SO 4 electrolytes is achievable. Notably, the H 2 O 2 production rate can reach 64.35 μmol h −1 at 3.4 V vs. RHE in a 50 mL 0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. This research underscores the importance of crystal part in catalyst in catalyzing the 2e − water oxidation reaction, offering valuable insights for future investigations.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction on Cu catalysts can generate high-value multicarbon (C2+) products, making it a significant research area of growing commercial interest. However, the production rate of ethanol remains low owing to the trade-off between the activity and selectivity of Cu catalysts. Here, we develop a defect-rich Cu catalyst with abundant high-index step sites by chemically etching commercially available Cu nanoparticles. This catalyst exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency of ∼50% and a partial current density of ∼416 mA cm–2 for ethanol production. Furthermore, it shows good stability at a high total current density of ∼800 mA cm–2, without obvious decay in ethanol selectivity. Control experiments indicate that the impressive ethanol selectivity is closely associated with the high density of high-index steps present on the defect-rich Cu catalyst. In situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations further verify that the optimal high-index step sites enable balanced adsorption of *CO, *OH, and *H, and facilitate the hydrogenation of *CHCOH to *CHCHOH, thereby improving ethanol selectivity. This work underscores the importance of step density control for steering the reaction pathway and selectivity toward ethanol.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) in acidic electrolytes can effectively overcome the challenge of carbonate formation and poor carbon utilization efficiency of CO2R in alkaline and neutral electrolytes. The corresponding anodic reaction design in an acidic environment therefore becomes important to overcome the valueless products and high energy consumption of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that hinder the overall commercial value of CO2R systems. Herein, we designed an efficient coupling system of electrochemical CO2 reduction and chlorine oxidation in an acidic electrolyte to reduce CO2 loss and improve the sustainability of the reaction system. We modulated the local microenvironment to promote C–C coupling by combining the cation effect with the larger surface area CuO nanoparticle catalyst in an acidic electrolyte. As a result, this coupling system can achieve high C2H4 and Cl2 faradaic efficiencies (FEs) of 63% and 89% at 700 mA cm−2 simultaneously. The system is commercially promising as it stably produces valuable products at both the cathode and anode.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3–) to ammonia (NH3) (NO3RR) coupled with NH3 separation represents a sustainable approach to mitigate nitrate pollution and recycle nitrogen from contaminated water. Nevertheless, this process is deemed impractical for contaminated natural water bodies owing to the limited presence of NO3––N (<50 mg L–1) and electrolytes and the relative abundance of scaling ions (Mg2+ and Ca2+). Furthermore, copper (Cu), as the primary NO3RR catalyst, generally suffers from NO2– accumulation and a prevalence of side hydrogen evolution. Herein, we develop an integrated system comprising sections of NO3– enrichment and NO3RR and NH3 collection, alongside a single-atom Cu-bearing CeO2 catalyst (Cu1/CeO2) for NO3RR. With this system, diluted NO3– is extracted from contaminated water using anion-exchange resins and then released into a concentrated NaCl aqueous solution, providing a solution with ample NO3––N (∼822 mg L–1) and electrolytes (∼1.7 M NaCl) while being free of scaling ions. Within this solution, the Cu1/CeO2 demonstrates an exceptional high and steady NH3–N production rate of 7.8 gNH3–N gCu–1 h–1, an NH3–N selectivity of 90.1%, and a Faradaic efficiency of 91.3%, outperforming the Cu nanoparticles (1.8 gNH3–N gCu–1 h–1, 46.3%, and 53.0%). In situ experiments and theoretical computations reveal a dual-site NO3RR mechanism involving the electron-deficient Cu1 site and adjacent oxygen vacancies, which collaborate to promote NO3– adsorption and lower conversion barrier while inhibiting hydrogen evolution. Finally, we implemented the integrated system along the Yangtze River, achieving nitrate elimination and nitrogen recycling with a competitive energy consumption of 1.36–1.54 kW h molN–1.

Semihydrogenation plays a key role in industrial hydrorefining of light alkenes, with a market above 400 billion by 2027. The high cost of commercial palladium-based catalysts strongly calls for innovation but with great challenges. Herein, copper nanoparticles decorated with a minimized ppm of Pd are developed through a chemical plating process to integrate the catalytic advantages of copper and palladium for achieving maximized catalysis in the semihydrogenation of a fatal impurity of butadiene in alkene feedstocks. The developed Pd–Cu catalyst (i.e., 114 ppm of Pd in Pd0.0033Cu1/TiO2) exhibits an unprecedented catalytic performance superior to commercial Pd/Al2O3, with 100% butene selectivity above 90% of butadiene conversion over 130 h on stream at 90 °C. Further exploration reveals that the atomically dispersed Pd on Cu nanoparticles, obtained at ultralow ppm levels of Pd loading, induces a hidden but critical H2 trap, which concentrates H2 on the Pd site for further H2 dissociation that offers intermediate hydrogen atoms to the tandem butadiene semihydrogenation over the third layer of Cu atoms neighboring Pd through hydrogen spillover. Moreover, a threshold on Pd density was identified at Pd/Cu surficial atomic ratio of 1/138 (i.e., Pd0.0033Cu1/TiO2) for maximizing butadiene semihydrogenation performance, based on an extreme collaboration between Pd for H2 dissociation and Cu for butadiene hydrogenation. This work provides important guidance for developing noble metal-saving catalysts in industrial applications.

While engineering lattice strain has been proven effective in enhancing the electrochemical CO 2 reduction performance of a catalyst, the correlation between strain effect and the intrinsic catalytic mechanism has remained elusive. Herein, a photolithography-inspired method is proposed to regulate Cu(111) lattice strain. By irradiating the photosensitive Cu(Acac) sol–gel, Acac chelate bond undergoes π→π * electronic transition, and the ring-closed Cu(Acac) decompose into the stabilized Cu(Acac) mesh which presents as nanospots embedded onto the surface of the Cu cluster. The photoinduced nanospots serve to exert compressive strain to the Cu(111) lattice in which the lattice distance is reduced by 5.7–11.4%. Herein, the catalyst with 11.4% lattice compression exhibits enhanced C 2 H 4 production capabilities, reaching a maximal Faradaic efficiency of 57.00%, and a high partial current density of 456.01 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that the compressed Cu(111) lattice exhibits reduced surface energies, leading to a significant drop in the C─C coupling reaction free energy from 1.16 eV over the pristine lattice, to 0.57 eV over the 10% compressed lattice. Additionally, the 10% compressed lattice facilitates spontaneous *O splitting immediately after OC─CHO coupling which leads to the generation of C 2 H 4 -favoring *CCH intermediate.

Controllable hydrogenation of carbonyl groups (C=O) is crucial for converting furfural into high-value furfuryl alcohol. Instead of traditional impregnation method, a novel Cu-based catalyst (Cu/SiO2) is prepared using the ammonia evaporation method (AE) for the efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions. At the reaction conditions of 90 °C and 1 MPa H2, the 5Cu/SiO2-AE sample showed optimal performance with higher turnover frequency (36.0 h−1) and furfuryl alcohol selectivity (>99.9%). After five cycles, the catalyst recycled still showed a high reaction activity and selectivity for furfuryl alcohol. Characterization results such as XRD, H2-TPR, FT-IR, and XPS showed that the excellent catalytic performance of 5Cu/SiO2-AE catalyst was attributed to the formation of layered copper silicate and the high dispersion of Cu species. Furthermore, the formation of layered copper silicate resulted in a higher ratio of Cu+/(Cu0+Cu+) at a reduction temperature of 250 °C, which was also responsible for the optimum activity. This work showed the importance of controllable synthesis of layered copper silicate in improving the catalytic performance of copper-containing catalyst.
