Pan Zhang,Changmei Wu,Lan Xie,Bai Xue,Yi Jiang

Considering the current challenges associated with fossil fuel scarcity and ice accumulation on solid surfaces, we propose a sustainable strategy that utilizes solar energy for ice formation, using a superhydrophobic coating possessing photothermal capabilities to tackle the challenges of icing and de-icing. We have successfully integrated the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @FAS/Ag-rGO composites into an epoxy matrix to create a photothermal superhydrophobic coating. The innovative coating boasts outstanding super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.8°, resulting in a 60 μL water droplet experiencing a freezing delay of 1498 s at −20 °C ambient conditions, which is longer than that of pure EP coating. Additionally, the coating exhibits an impressive photothermal effect, raising the surface temperature to 58.8 °C under 1 sun. The coating also demonstrates rapid de-icing capabilities, clearing ice in just 120 s under 40 mW/cm 2 . By leveraging the light-trapping effect, utilizing the plasma resonance of silver, and incorporating a high surface roughness micro-nano hierarchical structure, the coating achieves exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency and anti-icing performance. Moreover, the coating's chemical and mechanical durability enhance its practicality and potential utility across various applications. In conclusion, this innovative superhydrophobic coating with photothermal properties offers a promising solution for various practical applications such as anti-icing and de-icing.

A facile electrochemical machining process to fabricate superhydrophobic surface on iron materials and its applications in anti-icing

Kangnan Fan,Zhuji Jin,Xianglong Zhu,Qiulin Wang,Jing Sun

Iron materials are widely applied in electrical-tower. However, the freezing rain adhering to the electric-tower in winter can raise a huge potential safety hazard to the power facilities. Therefore, how to make ironworks possess anti-icing property has become a difficult problem. In order to resolve the aforementioned issue, a facile, low-cost and environment-friendly electrochemical machining method was developed to fabricate superhydrophobic surface on iron materials to endow anti-icing capacity in the freezing rain. After fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) modification, superhydrophobic surface could be obtained. The morphology of the surface film was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and laser confocal microscope. The chemical composition was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of the applied processing time on wettability was also studied. The results showed that a rough surface, which consisted of many step-like structures, was formed on the surface of iron by the proposed electrochemical method. After FAS modification, the surface showed good superhydrophobicity with the water contact angle of 162° and water sliding angle of 3.33°. The mechanism of the generated rough structures was also discussed. Moreover, the static and dynamic anti-icing tests were conducted. The results showed that the superhydrophobic surface can not only significantly delay the freezing time, but also prevent the cold water from freezing on the iron surface, which could be a good solution to the freezing rain issue.

A superhydrophobic/electrothermal synergistically anti-icing strategy based on graphene composite

Peng Wang,Tao Yao,Ziqiang Li,Weidong Wei,Qing Xie,Wei Duan,Huilong Han

Surface icing tends to cause serious problems such as flash over and the following blackout accident. Although electrothermal system is the most widely used method, how to solve the re-freeze problem as the melted ice tend to stay on the surface is still a challenge. Here, we introduced a superhydrophobic/electrothermal synergistically anti-icing strategy based on graphene composite. The superhydrophobicity together with the high electrothermal efficiency let the graphene surface dry and clean in the simulated “glaze ice” condition. Although ice accretion would be formed on the surface when the DC voltage was off, the ice could be rapidly removed within 70 s after applying the voltage of 50 V. To enhance the durability of superhydrophobic surface, the hierarchical structure was constructed by the tri-scale nature of inorganic fillers (graphene, carbon nanotubes and silica nanoparticles). Then the hierarchical structure was partially embedded into the substrate by a dissolution and resolidification method. The coupling effect of partially-embedded structure and hierarchical structure led to the superior robustness, which could withstand sandpaper abrasion (500 g load, 8.00 m), the attack of various corrosive liquids, and low/high temperature treatment without losing superhydrophobicity. More remarkably, this graphene superhydrophobic composite retained deicing property even after 30 icing/deicing cycles.

Facile one-step fabrication of PHC/PDMS anti-icing coatings with mechanical properties and good durability

Shiquan Hong,Ruitong Wang,Xiaobin Huang,Hong Liu

Undesired ice accumulation on surfaces leads to serious threats to both transportation systems and human life. Although superhydrophobic coatings have demonstrated attractive performance for icephobic applications, their use has been restricted due to their weak mechanical properties and complex preparation processes. In the present study, a facile and efficient strategy for the development of a novel super-repellent icephobic coating was demonstrated. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and cross-linked poly[hexeafluorobisphenol A-co-cyclotriphosphazene] microspheres (PHC) were prepared by a single-step precipitation polymerization without further surface modifications. The facilely fabricated coating demonstrated a high static water contact angle of ∼164° and a low sliding angle of ∼3.7°. More importantly, the coating exhibited exceptional mechanical durability against various damages, due to the synergistic effects of the micro/nanoscale surface structure and the strong and stable interaction between the PHC particles and PDMS. More remarkably, the coating showed good self-cleaning and anti-icing properties in a clammy environment (−15 ℃, relative humidity = 70%). This study offers insights into the preparation of a mechanically robust and cost-effective coating for various practical anti-icing applications.

Fabrication of phase change microcapsules and their applications to anti-icing coating

Yuan Yuan,Huiying Xiang,Guoyong Liu,Ruijin Liao

Phase change materials (PCMs) have been used for energy storage within a wide range of applications. However, they are scarcely used in the field of anti-icing of glass insulators in transmission lines under glaze ice (the icing temperature is 0∼-5 °C). Herein, we prepared phase change microcapsules (MPCMs) and applied them to permanent room temperature vulcanized (PRTV) silicon rubber to prepare anti-icing coating on glass. The n -tetradecane and nucleating agent were used to obtain a requirable phase change temperature. The MPCMs in the coating released latent heat when the temperature dropped from 2.25 to -4.73 °C, which was consistent with the temperature of glaze icing. Furthermore, MPCMs roughened the coating surface and imparted superhydrophobic to the coating. Compared with PRTV coating, the prepared MPCM/PRTV coating extended the freezing time of water droplets from 1381 to 3432 s. Additionally, the MPCMs in the coating could absorb and release energy repeatedly and maintain intactness without cracking during icing/melting cycles, and the anti-icing/deicing performance of the MPCM/PRTV coating demonstrated durability. The heat storage and release of the MPCM/PRTV coating is driven by the temperature difference, thus, we define this coating as having a “temperature switch” effect. The prepared coating shows potential anti-icing applications for glass insulators under glaze ice where the temperature fluctuates within the phase transition temperature range of this coating.

Durable Low-Interfacial Toughness PDMS/SiO2 Coatings with Superior Anti-Icing and Large-Scale Deicing Performance in the Natural Field

Tao Zhu,Yuan Yuan,Xingde Wei,Xujiang Hua,Xu Dai,Huiying Xiang,Linbo Song,Ruijin Liao

Ice accretion on wind turbine blades severely impacts the power generation efficiency, equipment lifespan, and safe operation of wind farms. Low-interfacial toughness materials have demonstrated potential for large-scale deicing under controlled laboratory conditions. However, their anti-icing and deicing performance in complex and harsh natural fields is rarely studied. Herein, low-interfacial toughness PDMS/SiO 2 coatings are prepared on aluminum plates. Field tests for anti-icing, icephobic, and large-scale deicing are conducted in the high-altitude regions of Southwest China. Fortunately, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating exhibits exceptional anti-icing and icephobic properties. The coating effectively delays the freezing of water droplets and natural ice accretion, significantly reducing icing weight and ice adhesion strength. During natural ice-covering processes, the ultra-low ice adhesion of the PDMS/SiO 2 coating aids in efficient ice shedding through wind and gravity and ensures rapid melting post-icing. Additionally, the PDMS/SiO 2 coating excels in large-scale deicing performance. The constant deicing force, governed by low interfacial toughness, provides robust assurance for efficient large-scale deicing of ice layers of varying sizes under gravity. Moreover, the coating demonstrates stable durability, retaining excellent deicing capabilities during icing/deicing cycles, UV radiation, and high-temperature aging tests. This study lays an experimental foundation for the further research and application of low-interfacial toughness materials.

Employing micro pyramidal holes and porous nanostructures for enhancing the durability of lubricant-infused surfaces in anti-icing

Xianhua Tan,Yuzhou Zhang,Xingyue Liu,Shuang Xi,Zhenyu Yan,Zhiyong Liu,Tielin Shi,Guanglan Liao

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have drawn tremendous attentions due to their excellent self-cleaning and anti-icing properties, where durability becomes one of most concerned issues. Here, we demonstrate a robust lubricant-infused surface with enhanced durability by introducing micro pyramidal holes and porous nanostructures . The porous nanostructures serve to retain the lubricant whilst the robust micro pyramidal holes provide protection for the nanostructures. SLIPSs with micro pyramidal holes (P-SLIPSs) are achieved via anisotropic etching and spraying superhydrophobic coatings . The sliding angle of P-SLIPS is as low as 1.5°, enabling liquid droplets including ink, milk and glycerol to slide easily on the surface. The ice adhesion strength of the P-SLIPS is about 11.5 kPa, similar to that of the nanostructured SLIPS without micro pyramidal holes but much lower than that of glass, Al alloy , silicon and superhydrophobic surfaces. After 20 icing/deicing cycles, the ice adhesion strength of the P-SLIPS is significantly lower than that of the nanostructured SLIPS. This is mainly attributed to the introduction of the robust micro pyramidal holes, which can protect the nanostructures from damaging during the icing/deicing process. Our work provides a feasible approach to fabricate robust lubricant-infused surfaces with excellent durability for anti-icing and self-cleaning.

An electroless nickel plating fabric coated with photothermal Chinese ink for powerful passive anti-icing/icephobic and fast active deicing

Songnan Zhang,Fengcai Zhang,Zhibin Zhang,Guolong Li,Hiroshi Fu,Jianying Huang,Yajun Wang,Zhongxiang Lei,Xiaoming Qian,Yuekun Lai

The icing phenomenon has caused much inconvenience to people's life. With the continuous progress of technology, it has been found that hydrophobic materials can be used in the anti-icing field, however icing still occurs on hydrophobic surfaces with long-term using in extremely harsh environments. Therefore, materials with anti-icing/icephobic and deicing functionalities have become an innovative strategy. In this paper, photothermal hydrophobic materials with anti-icing/icephobic and photothermal deicing properties are prepared using the photothermal nickel, Chinese ink and polydimethylhydrosiloxane with low surface energy. Due to the synergistic effect of the photothermal nickel nanoparticles and carbon nanoparticles in Chinese ink, the prepared material has a fast temperature rise rate at 1000 W/m 2 , which can reach the equilibrium temperature of 72 °C within 80 s. The freezing time of water droplets can be delayed to 1018 s at −15 °C, which is 11 times longer than that of nickel-plated materials. The ice on the coating melts rapidly and slides off along the inclined surface under the sunlight, proving that the material has a good photothermal deicing performance. Additionally, the coated surface has excellent wear resistance and UV resistance, which can be used outdoors for a long time. This powerful electroless nickel plating fabric, integrated with anti-icing/icephobic and fast deicing functionality with photothermal and drag reduction effect, provides a new approach to solve the icing problem in outdoor clothing.

A highly transparent and photothermal composite coating for effective anti-/de-icing of glass surfaces

Wei Guo,Cui Liu,Nian Li,Min Xi,Yamin Che,Changlong Jiang,Shudong Zhang,Zhenyang Wang

Anti-/de-icing of glass surfaces is of great importance in present daily life. The long-standing challenge in this field is largely due to the lack of stable multifunctional coatings that can be conveniently and economically constructed on the glass surface, and more importantly, are capable of retaining the original transparency of glass ranging from the visible to the near infrared spectrum. Herein, a direct spraying sol method on the glass surface to prepare a highly transparent and photothermal composite coating is reported. Such multifunctional coating of Cu7S4 nanoparticles/organo-silicone sols has displayed a good photothermal conversion property and hydrophobic property and therefore yields excellent anti-icing and self-melting ice properties. The condensation time of water droplets can be extended to 86 s even at −10 °C, which is 3.42 times delayed relative to ordinary blank glass. And the adhesion strength of ice is largely reduced to 72 KPa, which is as low as ∼1/3 that of ordinary glass. Meanwhile, the subcooling of adhering droplets is reduced to −12 °C under one solar illumination condition and exhibits a rapid de-icing capability. More impressively, the prepared functional coating glass shows an outstanding transmittance of more than 75% in the visible region, while it is over the minimum glass transmittance limit allowed by Safety Standards for Glass (GB9656-2016, China). In addition, the multifunctional photothermal glass coating exhibits good physical/chemical stability, which facilitates the long-term application of the coating in different environments.

Multifunctional electro-thermal superhydrophobic shape memory film with in situ reversible wettability and anti-icing/deicing properties

Yubo Wang,Yongyang Sun,Yiqing Xue,Xin Sui,Fangxin Wang,Wenyan Liang,Qianqian Dong

Shape memory polymer (SMP) surfaces can achieve wettability transition by controlling microstructure have attracted great attention. However, attempts at achieving in situ reversible switching capability remain largely challenging. This paper aims to elaborate on the preparation of a shape memory superhydrophobic surface with switchable wettability and electrothermal performance. The surface microstructure array is regulated by the shape memory effect based on the electrothermal response, and the reversible switching of the wetting state is realized under the action of voltage and external force. Different microstructural morphologies exhibit different solid-liquid contact states, as well as large/small contact angles and low/high adhesion. In addition, the rapid thermal response, excellent thermal conductivity , and satisfactory durability provide the possibility for anti-icing/deicing. The structure can prevent droplet aggregation, greatly delay the nucleation of droplet crystallization, and remove ice by Joule heat. In short, this work successfully realized the in-situ control of surface wettability which also provided a significant application potential in droplet manipulation, droplet writing, anti-icing/deicing, and other fields.

Fabrication of Slippery Surfaces on Aluminum Alloy and Its Anti-Icing Performance in Glaze Ice

Bo Li,Jie Bai,Lei Fan,Xianyin Mao,Zhimin Ding,Hao Mu,Guoyong Liu,Yuan Yuan

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have received growing attention as promising icephobic materials. In this study, SLIPS were prepared on aluminum alloys by combining anodization and infusion of common silicone oil. An SLIPS with low ice-adhesion strength (6 kPa) was obtained by optimizing the anodizing time parameters (10 min). In addition, the frosting process and freezing of water droplets on the as-prepared SLIPS at −10 °C were delayed for 2000 s and 4800 s, respectively. Simultaneously, the as-prepared SLIPS also exhibited excellent anti-icing performance in glaze ice, since the supercooled water drips/ice slipped from the surface. The ice weight of the as-prepared SLIPS was significantly lower than that of the bare aluminum surface and the anti-icing-fluid-coated aluminum surface, which was reduced by 38.2%–63.6% compared with the bare aluminum surface. The ice weight increased with decreased temperature and inclination angle. This work proposes a method suitable for large-area preparation of SLIPS that achieves excellent anti-icing performance and significantly reduces the weight of glaze ice. Keywords:slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces;anti-icing;glaze ice;ice-adhesion strength

Multifunctional slippery photothermal coating

Jun Ma,Jinlong Song

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has shown significant application values in various areas and has been commonly obtained by injecting the water-immiscible lubricant into a low-surface-energy modified micro/nano-structured surface. Constrained by the availability of desirable structured substrates or simple preparation schemes, the exploration of SLIPS with multifunctionality and universality that is facile to fabricate and robust in realistic applications remains challenging. Herein, we propose a one-step, fluoride-free and unconventional protocol based on a one-pot reaction of polysilazane (PSZ), silicone oils and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), which creates not only the favorable micro/nano-scale physical structures and surface chemistry for the excellent slippery property (sliding angle < 3°) and robust lubricant retention, but also the superior photothermal responsiveness for the potential multifunctional applications. It has been demonstrated that the proposed multifunctional slippery photothermal coating (MSPC) displayed outstanding potential in corrosion resistance , droplet manipulation and anti/de-icing. We envision that the proposed strategy could be realized in the real-life applications.
