AMPS-based superabsorbent polymers for internal curing in concrete: Ion effects on absorption-release behavior and performance

Mingwei Wang,Bin Li,Zhendi Wang,Ling Wang

Aimed at overcoming the shortcomings of current single-component internal curing agents, two superabsorbent polymer (SAP) systems (AA-AMPS and AM-AMPS) were synthesized using three monomers: 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AA), and acrylamide (AM). The absorption and release behaviors of these systems and their effects on autogenous shrinkage and compressive strength were systematically evaluated. The pore-forming absorption ratio ( Q pf ), defined as the SAP absorption at the final setting time, was measured using fluorescence impregnation and digital image processing. The influence of SAP chemical composition on internal curing performance was analyzed in terms of ionic crosslinking and repulsion effects. In terms of the 7-day and 28-day compressive strengths, Q pf and the pore-forming effective water-to-cement ratio (i.e., effective water-to-cement ratio at final setting) are identified as the main influencing factors. In the AA-AMPS series, as the content of AMPS ( m AMPS ) increases, the ionic crosslinking effect weakens while the ionic repulsion effect strengthens. This leads to an upward trend in Q pf , resulting in a higher porosity induced by SAP and a subsequent decrease in compressive strength. In the AM-AMPS series, Q pf exhibited a non-linear trend, peaking at 50 % m AMPS . Regarding autogenous shrinkage, Q pf and the water release rate of SAPs were determined to be the main determinants. In the AA-AMPS series, owing to the ionic crosslinking effect of AA, the water release rate of this series of SAPs is relatively faster. The increase in m AMPS weakens the ionic crosslinking effect and enhances the ionic repulsion effect, leading to an increase in Q pf , which results in more water available for reducing autogenous shrinkage and an expansion of cement paste. In the AM-AMPS series, the ionic crosslinking effect of AMPS is weaker, resulting in a slower water release rate for this series of SAPs. As m AMPS increases, the ionic crosslinking effect is enhanced, which improves the water-release capability of SAPs and strengthens their effect on reducing autogenous shrinkage. This study elucidates the mechanism by which the ion effect influences the internal curing performance of AMPS-based SAPs, thereby providing valuable insights into the relationship between their chemical composition and performance.

Visible light-induced crosslinking enables highly permeable and chlorine-resistant polyamide membranes for water purification

Zihui Wang,Langming Bai,Jinlong Wang,Heng Liang,Guibai Li

Nanofiltration (NF) based purification technology plays a growing role in water softening, wastewater reuse, and drinking water production , whose core component is the thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) surface separating layer with high water permeation and significant antifouling and chemical resistance. Strengthening water transport with simultaneously improving chemical tolerance and fouling resistance accords with the demands for sustainable water treatment. In this work, a photo-assisted crosslinked NF membrane with a regulated interlaced stripe surface morphology was fabricated through grafting 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) into the PA network during visible light irradiation. Surface structures and chemical features were characterized, and the NF performance, antifouling and chlorine resistance were systematically evaluated. The optimal membrane with AMPS molecules carrying sulfonyl groups crosslinked in the PA network was rendered electronegative charge, uniformly narrowed pore size, improved hydrophilicity, and higher crosslinking degree. The water permeation was augmented to 30.5 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 for the optimal membrane, four times more advanced than the pristine membrane with a water permeability of 5.9 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 , and the divalent salt retention was improved to 99.7%. In addition, the optimal membrane also exhibited outstanding chlorine tolerance, fouling removal, and antifouling capacity. The flux recovery ratio ( FRR ) of the best membrane outperformed that of the pristine membrane and the flux declined more slowly in the whole fouling cycle testing. This work provides a novel avenue for fabricating high-efficiency TFC membranes with great water permeation and fouling resistance.

Improving the mechanical performance of P(N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide/acrylic acid/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) hydrogel via hydrophobic modified nanosilica

Pan Xu,Yi Zong,Zhijie Shang,Meiling Yao,Pingde Liu,Xinxue Li

Hydrogels with high mechanical strength are essential for its most industrial applications. In this work, the hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles (M-SiO 2 NPs) modified with octadecyltrimethoxysilane were used as physical crosslinker to toughen the mechanical properties of hydrogels. The solution of monomers containing M-SiO 2 NPs, N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide (NHAM), acrylic acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), was polymerized to prepare a P(NHAM/AA/AMPS)-based composite hydrogel without any chemical cross-linker. The composition and microstructure of the hydrogel were carefully studied with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel were investigated through compressive and tensile tests. Dynamic swelling tests were carried out at different pH values (1.0–12.0) and salinity (2000–20,000 mg/L) to study the acid resistance, alkali resistance, and salt resistance of the hydrogel. The obtained results showed that the hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical performance, which was attributed to the unique 3D network formed by the hydrogen bond between M-SiO 2 NPs and polymer as well as the hydrophobic association effect between the hydrophobic chains of M-SiO 2 NPs. Furthermore, the hydrophobic association effect was enhanced when contacting with salt, acid, and alkali solutions, thus endowing the hydrogel with intensified salt resistance and wider acid–base adaptability range.

Synthesis and influence of modified Nano-SiO2 Grafted poly (AM-AA-AMPS) onto Swelling behavior, Degradation and its Viscosity.

Ousseini Seidina Ousseini,Bo Peng,Zhuang Miao,Kai Cheng,Mandella Ali,Jingwei Li,Jixiang He,Seybou Yacouba Zakariyaou

This study presents the synthesis and evaluation of a novel nanocomposite using dispersion polymerization of Acrylamide (AM), Acrylic Acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and N, N’-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) grafted onto the surface of modified nano-SiO 2 (M-NS). The modification, achieved using γ-Methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH570), enhances hydrophobicity and stability. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), laser particle size analysis, and zeta potential measurements were employed to confirm the structural integrity and functionalization of the nanocomposite. Emphasis was placed on examining swelling, viscosity, and dispersion stability under various temperature, salinity, and water conditions to determine its effectiveness under high-temperature and high salinity environments typical of oil reservoirs. The results revealed significant enhancements in swelling behavior and dispersion stability, with high resistance to thermal degradation and salinity-induced aggregation. The nanocomposite demonstrates superior swelling behavior, viscosity retention, and thermal stability under high-temperature (70°C) and high-salinity (up to 20g/L NaCl) conditions, outperforming traditional grafted polymers. Results demonstrated that swelling ratios improve by 45% with 2wt% M-NS, and viscosity degradation is significantly reduced over 20 days of aging. Ionic effects, analyzed show enhanced resistance to divalent ions (Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ), critical for harsh reservoirs environments. These findings suggest superior conformance control, compliance, and thermal stability, which were further improved with the rise of modified nano-SiO 2 positioning this nanocomposite as a promising option for chemical-enhanced oil recovery applications, addressing in permeability heterogeneity and salinity-induced aggregation.

Nano-SiO2/P(AM-AMPS-DMDAAC) composite microspheres with enhanced thermal stability for profile control in low permeability reservoirs

Ming Zhou,Zhihui Meng,Chenyiting Li,Xiao Guo,Ronghua Yue,Yuxiang Liu,Jianhong Zhou

Polymer microspheres are widely used in petroleum, electronics, biomedicine, and other industrial fields. This article aims to overcome the problems of poor thermal stability and insufficient mechanical strength of conventional polymer microspheres in high-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs. A composite nanosphere with controllable size and excellent temperature and salt resistance was synthesized by introducing modified nano-SiO 2 to construct an organic-inorganic composite system. The composite nanosphere is crucial for the effectiveness of profile control, water plugging, and oil displacement under harsh reservoir conditions. In this study, amphoteric SiO 2 /P(AM-AMPS-DMDAAC) composite microsphere with small size and regular shape were successfully prepared by reverse phase microemulsion polymerization. A mixed solution of acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), KH-570 modified nano-SiO 2 , and methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) was used as the aqueous phase, with Span-80 and Tween-80 as composite emulsifiers. The microsphere exhibits excellent comprehensive physicochemical properties, with a controllable median particle size of approximately 30 nm. Its thermal decomposition temperature increases from 201 °C to 241 °C, and has good viscoelasticity and pseudoplastic characteristics. These properties enable it to effectively cope with harsh reservoir conditions such as high temperature and low permeability. Through oil displacement experiments, the microspheres achieved an average plugging rate of 85.9 % in low-permeability cores and increased the oil recovery by 16.79 %. These indicate that the composite microspheres, as an efficient profile control and water plugging agent, have broad application prospects for enhanced oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs.

Covalently bonded AMPS-based copolymerCSH hybrid as a fluid loss additive for oilwell saline cement slurry in UHT environment

Hang Zhang,Miaomiao Hu,Pengpeng Li,Ming Liu,Yongjin Yu,Xiujian Xia,Huiting Liu,Jintang Guo

The organic/inorganic hybrid fluid loss additive PANI C S H was synthesized to adapt for high salinity cementing at ultrahigh temperatures (UHT, 200–240 °C). Unlike common physical blending, the PANI-C-SH was synthesized by grafting calcium silicate hydrate (C S H) from polycarboxylate copolymer PANI [P(AMPS-NNDMA-IA)] via “peptide coupling” and “sol–gel” reactions. When added into the UHT cement slurry, the hybrid PANI C S H exhibited more pronounced saturated saline cement slurry fluid loss control ability (31 mL at 240 °C) than that of PANI copolymer (68 mL). The three-dimensional spatial morphology of PANI C S H hybrid was able to plug and fill in the micro voids of the filter cake and resulted in effective refinements of the micro-pore structure, which compensated the deteriorated fluid loss control capacity caused by the weakened adsorption of copolymer PANI in saturated saline cement slurry.

Sulfonated sodium tannin and AM/AMPS copolymer complex as an anti-temperature viscosity reducer for water-based drilling fluid

Shaocong Pang,Heming Zhu,Jingyuan Ma,Luo Zhao,Chaolan Yang,Yuxiu An

Viscosity reducer is used to reduce the high viscosity of drilling fluid containing bentonite as a continuous phase. However, the viscosity of drilling fluid increases and the rheology of the drilling fluid deteriorates at high temperature, causing problems such as reduction in rate of penetration and bit balling. As a core component, drilling fluids with bad rheology seriously affect the further development of drilling engineering, especially at high temperatures. Therefore, there is an urgent need for viscosity reducer suitable for high temperature. In this study, a high temperature-resistant viscosity reducer for water-based drilling fluid was prepared. The rheological parameters of drilling fluids containing 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 wt% viscosity reducer after aging at different temperatures were evaluated. The results showed that the rheological parameters, such as apparent viscosity, yield point, plastic viscosity, and gel strength decreased within 200℃. Otherwise, filtration volume of 1.8 and 2.2 g/cm3 compound drilling fluids containing 1 wt% viscosity reducer was less than 10 ml. And its resistance to Na+ contamination reached saturation, that is, 36% NaCl solutions. The mechanism of viscosity reduction was also investigated by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction. Viscosity reducer adsorbed on the clay particles and destroyed the network structure formed by the clay particles while releasing free water.

A Novel DMAA/AMPS/VM/IA quadripolymer as a high temperature and salt resistance fluid loss additive for well cementing

Qi Feng,Chengwen Wang,Wenjian Yue,Chengli Wang,Tao Song

Cementing in deep and ultra-deep reservoirs often faces the critical challenge of additive degradation in high-temperature environments. Addressing this, 1-vinylimidazole (VM) was incorporated into the copolymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, itaconic acid, and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid to synthesize a tetrapolymer (PDVI). Using aqueous free radical polymerization optimized by response surface methodology, the resulting PDVI exhibited superior fluid loss reduction in high-temperature and high-salinity conditions. Compared to the control sample PDI, PDVI reduced fluid loss from 64.7 mL to 25 mL at 200°C and from 105.7 mL to 42.5 mL at 240°C, while maintaining filtration below 70 mL in 20% NaCl. Structural characterization via 1 H-NMR and FTIR, combined with TGA and aging tests, confirmed that VM’s rigid five-membered ring significantly enhanced thermal stability; molecular weight retention after aging at 220°C increased from 46.13% to 68.31%. Furthermore, DLS, SEM, and zeta potential analyses indicated that VM’s cationic nature facilitates robust polymer adsorption on cement particles. This mechanism ensures effective particle dispersion and the formation of a dense filter cake even under extreme conditions. These findings provide essential insights for developing high-performance polymeric additives for cementing in complex downhole environments.

Construction of AMPS/ODMA-Modified Silica Composite Gel System and Its Applicability Evaluation in High-Temperature and High-Salinity Reservoirs

Yang Zhao,Penghui Dai,Xingwang Wang,Yuhao Li,Jingchun Wu,Zhihua Guo,Chengke Ren

In high-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs, HPAM is prone to thermal degradation, salt-induced chain shrinkage and shear instability, which weakens its mobility-control ability. In view of the above problems, this paper prepared bifunctional modified nano-SiO 2 (KH570@SiO 2 -AMPS/ODMA, DF-SiO 2 ), and constructed a composite gel system with HPAM. Its performance was evaluated by structural and rheological characterization, aging and shear recovery, and heterogeneous core displacement. At 90 °C and about 20,000 mg/L salinity, the viscosity retention rate exceeded 70% after 90 days of aging, and recovered to 94.6% of the initial value after 72 h of standing following shearing. Core displacement shows that the system can improve the flow distribution of heterogeneous reservoirs, and the recovery of high and low permeability layers is 6.95 and 4.41 percentage points higher than that of HPAM, respectively. DF-SiO 2 constructs a dynamic network through interfacial interaction and hydrophobic association to improve the stability and structural recovery ability of the system, which provides a new idea for the application of high-temperature and high-salinity heterogeneous reservoirs.

Synthetic copolymer (AM/AMPS/DMDAAC/SSS) as rheology modifier and fluid loss additive at HTHP for water-based drilling fluids

Yuming Huang,Dingyu Zhang,Wenlong Zheng

In the petroleum industry, high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) would dramatically worsen rheological properties and increase fluid loss volumes of drilling fluids. Synthetic polymer as an indispensable additive has attracted more and more attention recently. In this article, a new copolymer (named AADS) of 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, acrylamide, dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, and sodium styrene sulfonate was synthesized through aqueous solution polymerization. The chemical structure of the copolymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, its thermal stability was simultaneously analyzed using a differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that the synthetic polymer contained all the designed functional groups, and its structure was consistent to the desired one. Under contamination of sodium chloride, AADS solution maintained relatively high viscosity in high concentration brine, showing a good antisalt capacity. Furthermore, the effect of AADS content and temperature on rheological behavior and fluid loss volume of the water-based drilling fluid (WBDF) containing the synthesized product were investigated according to the American Petroleum Institute standard. Results showed that the rheological and filtration properties of the prepared WBDF were improved with the increase in the AADS concentration before and after the thermal aging test. In addition, in the temperature range of 80–240 °C, a reversible rheological behavior was observed during the heating–cooling process, and the HTHP fluid loss was controlled within 22.5 mL, suggesting that the copolymer AADS was suitable for making WBDF s with high temperature resistance. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of high-performance AMPS-based retarders for ultra-high temperature oil well cement: An investigation into structural design and mechanism

Chunhu Xu,Mai Xu,Hang Zhang,Miaomiao Hu,Jintang Guo,Dawei Xu

Focusing on the development of ultra-high-temperature (>200 °C) retarders for cement slurries used in deep-well cementing operations, this study proposes a novel modification strategy for 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS)-based copolymers. While incorporating rigid groups has been widely applied to enhance the thermal stability of polymers, charged functional groups play a significant role in improving their adsorption properties. The results from this study reveal that the integration of the cationic functional monomer methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) into a typical ternary copolymer with rigid side chains (PAIN) facilitates the synthesis of a new type of heterocyclic zwitterionic quaternary copolymer (PAINM). Macroscopically, compared with PAIN, PAINM demonstrates a maximum weight loss temperature that is 14 °C higher, an extended setting delay of approximately 100 min under ultra-high-temperature conditions, and a stable adsorption capacity that persists for up to 60 h without significant decline. On a microscale, a systematic analysis of the thermal degradation behavior suggests that polymer degradation involves the release of side-chain carboxylic acids, decomposition of amide groups, backbone chain breakage, and formation of unsaturated small molecules. Notably, the structural degradation of PAINM is significantly delayed compared to PAIN. This study verifies the effectiveness of AMPS-based polymer retarders in cement systems at 220 °C and clarifies their structural evolution and degradation mechanisms under high-temperature conditions.

Amino modified polydimethylsiloxane emulsions with excellent thermal stability and hydrophilicity for application in spinning oil of PAN precursors

Qiuxue Zhang,Yunjiao Deng,Zhongyu Fu,Pengfei Deng,Chao Zhou,Huixuan Zhang

Spinning oil was an important adjuvant used in the process of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors. In this article, amino modified polydimethylsiloxane (AMPS) emulsions with excellent properties that could be used as spinning oil were successfully prepared. AMPS was synthesized firstly with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), 3-(dimethoxy(methyl)silyl)propylamine (KH554) and decamethyltetrasiloxane(MD2M). The AMPS emulsion was prepared with AMPS, emulsifiers, acetic acid and water, and the influence of amino content on the properties of AMPS and AMPS emulsions was investigated in detail. The introduction of amino decreased the thermal decomposition temperature and enhanced the thermal stability of AMPS at 500–600 °C. In addition, the particle size and water contact angles of AMPS emulsion were obviously reduced with the increase of amino content, as the interaction between AMPS and PAN was enhanced. When the proportion of KH554 was 7.5%, AMPS emulsion had a proper particle size of 160.3 nm and a small contact angle of 34.5° with PAN film, which could be applied as spinning oil during the processing of PAN precursors. The optimum solid content of AMPS emulsion coating on the PAN precursors was also investigated. The surface of PAN precursors was smooth and the grooves were nearly repaired with the solid content of 1 wt%.
