Herein, an n-type Ag2Se/Ag/CuAgSe thermoelectric (TE) composite film supported by a porous nylon membrane with a record power factor (2231.5 μW m−1 K−2 at 300 K) is obtained via a simple approach. The ultrahigh power factor mainly originates from the optimized carrier transport of the composite material and the interfacial energy filtration effect. HAADF-STEM observations of a focused ion beam (FIB) prepared sample reveal that the Ag and CuAgSe in the composite exist as nanoparticles and most of the Ag nanoparticles and CuAgSe nanoparticles are randomly distributed at the surfaces and grain boundaries of the Ag2Se grains. Bending tests demonstrate superior flexibility of the hybrid film and the power factor decreases by only 10% after bending for 1000 cycles along a rod with a radius of 4 mm. The excellent flexibility is attributed to a synergetic effect of the nanocomposite film with numerous submicron-sized pores and the flexible nylon membrane. A flexible TE module is assembled using the optimum hybrid film, which generates an outstanding power density of 5.42 W m−2 at a temperature difference of 45 K. This work not only demonstrates the tremendous potential of inorganic TE materials for flexible application, but also provides an effective strategy to design high-performance TE composites.

Ag2Se thin film devices have attracted significant interest in energy harvesting technologies for powering microscale systems. In this work, an in situ selenide diffusion strategy is employed to prepare Ag2Se thin films, optimizing the carrier transport by tuning in situ synthesis temperature. The optimized carrier mobility of ∼871.43 cm–2 V–1 s–1 is achieved, leading to a high room-temperature electric conductivity of ∼1235 S cm–1. Correspondingly, a decent Seebeck coefficient (|S| > 120 μV K–1) is obtained due to the optimal carrier concentration of approximately 1 × 1019 cm–3. Consequently, the Ag2Se film synthesized at 423 K exhibits a high power factor of ∼20.54 μW cm–1 K–2 at room temperature. A thermoelectric generator with 5 single legs is assembled by Ag2Se thin films. This device is capable of generating an output voltage of approximately 8.58 mV and a corresponding power of approximately 3.76 nW when subjected to a temperature difference of 40 K. The study presents an effective method for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of Ag2Se thin films.

Flexible thermoelectric power generation is a competitive candidate for powering wearable electronic devices and chip-sensors for the internet-of-things. Nevertheless, the poor thermoelectric performance of n-type flexible thin films limits their application, demonstrating strong demand for improving its properties. In the present work, flexible n-type Ag2Se thin films with an excellent power factor of 21.6 μW cm−1 K−2 at 348 K and the high ZT value ∼0.6 at 348 ∼ 363 K are obtained via rational micro-structural manipulations. The self-assembled thin films which grew on heated organic flexible substrates have a pure Ag2Se phase and are well-crystallized, leading to ultra-high electrical conductivity. Highly (00l)-textured thin films are obtained when the Ag/Se ratio is closed to the ideal stoichiometry, which contributes to a higher Seebeck coefficient than that of the (013)-textured ones, according to the theoretical analysis. Meanwhile, slightly Ag-rich Ag2Se thin films have low lattice thermal conductivity, resulting in moderate total thermal conductivity. Consequently, a flexible generator module with eight pairs of p–n legs is fabricated by using present n-type Ag2Se and self-made p-type Sb2Te3 films. It displays a maximum power of ∼800 nW when applying a temperature difference of 50 K, and an output voltage of 9.8 mV is achieved from the conversion of the human body heat through wearable device testing. The bending test results show an increase of only 5% in device resistance along a rod with a radius higher than 7.0 mm after 1000 cycles, indicating its good flexibility. Therefore, the novel design concept demonstrated in this work can provide an effective way to achieve high thermoelectric performance in flexible thin films and devices.

The development of wearable electronics demands flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials that simultaneously possess high energy-conversion efficiency and robust mechanical compliance. Conventional strategies often rely on passive substrates or suffer from a trade-off between electrical and mechanical properties. In this work, we report a hot-rolling process to fabricate high-performance, free-standing Ag2Se/PVDF composite films, which synergistically optimizes both microstructure and functionality.By systematically tuning the Ag2Se content (80-100 wt%), we demonstrate that hot rolling not only aligns Ag2Se nanowires into a highly oriented, continuous lamellar conductive network along the rolling direction, but also induces the α→β crystal phase transition in PVDF, forming an interpenetrating network structure with Ag 2 Se as the rigid conductive skeleton and PVDF as the flexible toughening phase, thus significantly enhancing interfacial bonding and carrier transport. The optimized composite film with 90 wt% Ag2Se (R-90) exhibits an exceptional room-temperature power factor of 1129.5 μW•m-1 •K-2 and a planar TE device constructed using R-90 legs achieves a high power density of 7.0 W•m-2 under a temperature difference of 35.6 K, at the highest level of free-standing inorganic-organic composite flexible thin films and devices. Moreover, the R-90 film exhibits outstanding mechanical flexibility, retaining 96.3% of its electrical conductivity after 3000 bending cycles (3 mm radius), along with a tensile strain of 1.32% at room temperature (3.3 times that of pure Ag2Se). This study highlights rolling as a potent microstructural-control strategy that concurrently enhances TE and mechanical properties in organic-inorganic composites, paving a promising route toward substrate-free, high-performance flexible TE devices for wearable energy harvesting.

With the emergence of new applications of infrared photodetection technology, it is increasingly urgent to develop nontoxic and environmentally friendly alternative materials for heavy metal semiconductors. Research over the past decade has shown that silver selenide (Ag2Se) quantum dots (QDs) have become effective substitutes for lead- and mercury-based QDs, especially in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Owing to the large electron mobility and wide spectral response characteristic of graphene and the high light absorption efficiency of QDs, the graphene/Ag2Se QDs composite-based photodetectors (PDs) exhibit advantages of high responsivity and wide spectral detection range. However, long-chain ligands on the QDs’ surface limit the transport efficiency of charge carriers, which, in turn, affects the performance of PDs. Herein, in order to overcome this limitation, we propose photoconductive PDs based on graphene/Ag2Se QDs, and a liquid-phase inorganic ligand exchange technique is introduced to replace the original long-chain ligand of QDs with a specific inorganic short-chain molecule in this study. Consequently, the designed graphene/Ag2Se QDs PDs achieve a maximum responsivity of 2.878 × 104 A/W at a 100 mV bias and a photocurrent of 66.60 μA under an 808 nm laser excitation. The ligand exchange strategy significantly improves the performance of Ag2Se QDs, making them a strong candidate for NIR absorption and contributing to the development of novel PDs with small size, lightweight, low power consumption, and economic cost.

Simultaneously achieving high photothermal and thermoelectric conversion efficiencies in flexible thin films remains challenging, limiting the performance of ultra-broadband photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors. This study introduces a two-step approach involving silver pre-deposition and vapor-phase selenization, based on a solid-vapor diffusion mechanism, to fabricate a flexible carbon nanotube (CNT) film modified with Ag 2 Se nanoparticles (CNT@Ag 2 Se), synergistically enhancing its light absorption and thermoelectric properties. By optimizing the selenization time, the carrier transport behavior was effectively modulated, yielding a maximum power factor of 84.35 µW·m −1 ·K −2 at room-temperature after 20 min of treatment. The incorporation of Ag 2 Se nanoparticles also significantly improved light absorption and photothermal conversion, enabling broad-spectrum absorption across 200–2500 nm with a 47% enhancement in photothermal performance. As a result, the CNT@Ag 2 Se film exhibited a doubled voltage output compared to pristine CNT films, along with ultra-broadband detection capability. Laser position-dependent measurements and synchronized infrared thermal imaging confirm that the photovoltage originates from a light-induced temperature gradient driving directional carrier diffusion, illustrating a photothermal-thermoelectric coupling mechanism. Systematic characterization and simulation further reveal the underlying mechanisms for the performance improvement. Furthermore, the film demonstrates excellent flexibility, retaining a stable output under multiple bending cycles and demonstrating outstanding non-contact sensing capabilities.

With the widespread application of Ag + in modern life and industry, the potential hazardous effects of Ag + to environment and humans have attracted great concerns. Thus, effective and rapid strategies for Ag + detection are highly desirable. In this paper, a novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor using CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been constructed for sensitive and selective detection of Ag + , which is based on the formation of Ag 2 Se QDs. CdSe QDs were initially prepared and showed single wavelength emission at 510 nm. When Ag + exists, a rising peak appeared at 650 nm and the emission at 510 nm declined, exhibiting distinct ratiometric fluorescence emission ( I 650 / I 510 ) characteristic with a linear response over the Ag + concentration range of 0.01–4 μM. Significantly, the fluorescence changed from green to red. The detection limit of the constructed sensor is 1.4 nM. Furthermore, the sensing assay can be successfully applied to detect Ag + in real water samples and living cells.

The synthesis of efficient heterojunction nanocomposite with optimized carrier dynamics remains a key challenge in material design. Herein, we report the electrostatic assembly of a CsCu 2 Br 3 /Ag 2 Se heterojunction nanocomposite, in which oppositely charged nanocrystals spontaneously integrate through electrostatic interactions, forming intimate interfacial contact and thereby enhancing carrier transfer. The resulting type-II band alignment induces carrier redistribution at the interface and generates an internal electric field that enables carrier separation without the need for external bias. Density functional theory calculations and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results confirm the type-II alignment, providing insights into interfacial carrier dynamics. The device exhibits a broadband photoresponse from 405 to 1550 nm, with high photocurrent, reduced noise, and rapid response times (37.1 and 28.4 μs for rise and decay, respectively). Furthermore, the device exhibits stable performance, high-frequency modulation (∼7 kHz), and spatially resolved photocurrent mapping, indicating its potential for near-infrared imaging. Overall, the results demonstrate that electrostatic assembly is an effective strategy for engineering type-II heterojunction interfaces for self-powered broadband photodetection Download: Download high-res image (215KB) Download: Download full-size image

Narrow bandgap silver selenide (Ag2Se) is a promising candidate for noninvasive in vivo imaging in the long-wavelength region of the second near-infrared window (NIR-IIc, 1700–2000 nm), yet precise control over its size remains challenging due to ineffective regulation of nucleation and growth, largely constrained by its extremely low solubility product. Here, we reveal a growth bottleneck in the Ag2Se quantum dots (QDs) synthesis arising from rapid monomer depletion during nucleation. The sole use of strongly binding thiol ligands further confines the system to a thermodynamically metastable size regime, hindering the continuous growth required for precise spectral tuning. By employing a dual-ligand strategy combining strongly binding thiol ligands with labile oleate ligands, we modulate monomer supersaturation and the dynamic adsorption–desorption equilibrium on the nanocrystal surface, thereby suppressing nucleation to preserve sufficient monomer for subsequent monomer diffusion-limited growth. This approach yields size-tunable Ag2Se QDs with emission peaks extending into the NIR-IIc window. Furthermore, the synergistic passivation by zinc oleate ligands significantly improves the size dispersity and colloidal stability of large-sized Ag2Se QDs. Our in-depth investigation not only addresses challenges in size control of QDs exhibiting nonclassical growth but also highlights the transformative potential of low-toxicity, NIR-IIc-emissive Ag2Se QDs for optoelectronics and noninvasive deep-tissue imaging.

Ratiometric fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) region holds great promise for the accurate identification of metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs), but faces challenges in biocompatible probe design with simplified composition and broad spectral tunability. Here, a minimalist, self-calibrating ratiometric probe based on homologous Ag 2 Se quantum dots (QDs) is developed. Through rational redesign of tributylphosphine-mediated coordination kinetics, continuous size-dependent emission tuning across 935–1710 nm, with the synthetic mechanism and structure–property relationships systematically elucidated, is achieved. The inherently low-toxicity Ag 2 Se core, combined with poly(amino acid) coating, ensures excellent biosafety, as validated by in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo biochemical assays. Two spectrally distinct QDs (emitting at 1040 and 1305 nm, with full width at half maximum of 176 and 119 nm) enable multiplexed anatomical imaging, allowing both real-time intraoperative detection and postoperative assessment of MLNs, with a diagnostic threshold ratio of ≈0.9. This work presents a scalable strategy for full-NIR-II monochromatic QD synthesis and establishes a minimal-component biocompatible platform for precision ratiometric diagnostics.

Exploring N-type High-entropy materials with both high thermoelectric and mechanical properties is highly desirable for all-high-entropy thermoelectric generators (TEGs) since the thermoelectric and mechanical properties of N-type one are largely behind its P-type counterparts. Herein, a new rock-salt structure N-type high entropy thermoelectric AgBiPbSe 2 S is introduced with a bandgap of ≈0.43 eV. The atomic radii difference of each component results in a large lattice distortion of 0.246, leading to a low thermal conductivity of 0.36 W m −1 K −1 at 823 K. The figure of merit ( ZT ) reaches 0.6 for AgBiPbSe 2 S at 823 K. Moreover, Ag 2 Se precipitates are included in AgBiPbSe 2 S to filter low energy carriers for high Seebeck coefficients and to scatter phonons with nanoscale wavelength for ultralow lattice thermal conductivities. Consequently, a peak ZT of ≈1.18 at 823 K and an average ZT of 0.60 at 400–823 K are obtained for Ag 1.02 BiPbSe 2 S. More importantly, high mechanical properties are also obtained in Ag 1.02 BiPbSe 2 S, of which the Vickers hardness and flexural strength are ≈209 Hv and 32 MPa, respectively, originating from the enhanced lattice friction by chemical short-range disorder (i.e., high entropy effect) and dispersion strengthening caused by Ag 2 Se nanoprecipitates.

In this work, we combine the catalytic growth and ligand control mechanisms to synthesize ultrathin/ultralong ZnSe nanowires (NWs). Ag 2 Se catalyst seeds initiate the NW growth and significantly cause the increase of the NW lengths up to several micrometers. The long-chain amine mixture of oleylamine and 1-dodecylamine acts as reaction medium and ligands (or surfactants) to control the sizes of Ag 2 Se seeds and ZnSe NWs within several nanometers (the mean diameter of NWs: ∼5.5 nm). The microstructure studies by HRTEM reveal the presence of zinc blende (ZB)/wurtzite (W) alternations and a number of stacking faults and twins within individual ZnSe ultrathin NWs. These NWs exhibit optical quantum confinement effect due to the diameters smaller than the theoretical exciton Bohr diameter of bulk ZnSe. Raman spectrum and photoelectronic performance under white light illumination are also presented.
