Preparation and Characterization of AgNWs Conductive Hydrogel With High Mechanical Performance, High Electrical Conductivity, and Biocompatibility

Shui Guan,Fengxu Wang,Chuzhou Wen,Hailong Liu,Changkai Sun

Hydrogel scaffolds incorporating conductive fillers have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in neural tissue repair and regenerative medicine. However, most conductive fillers have adverse effects on the mechanical properties of hydrogel networks. In the present study, a novel polyacrylamide/alginate (PAAm/Alg) assembled with conductive silver nanowires (AgNWs) composite hydrogel was developed through photopolymerization and crosslinking methods. The chemical structure, morphology, mechanical properties, conductivity, porosity, swelling rate, adhesive strength, thermal stability, in vitro biodegradation, and biocompatibility of the prepared hydrogel samples were investigated. The PAAm/Alg-AgNWs hydrogels exhibited uniform pore structure distribution, high porosity and water absorption, improved mechanical and conductive properties, good thermal stability, and adequate biodegradability. In particular, the 0.4 wt% AgNWs conductive hydrogel exhibited excellent conductivity of 0.618 S/m and a high Young's modulus of 43.6 kPa, along with good electrical durability and stability over ten cyclic loading. Moreover, the abundant hydrophilic groups in the hydrogel make it have good adhesion properties at different interfaces. Compared with the PAAm/Alg hydrogel, the incorporation of AgNWs enhanced the material's roughness, facilitating cell adhesion, viability, and proliferation. These results showed that the AgNWs assembled into the PAAm/Alg polymers endowed the hydrogel with high electrical conductivity, while excellent mechanical strength and biocompatibility, indicating an attractive conductive substrate for further studies on neural tissue repair and regeneration.

Novel PEI cross-linking strategy for improved conductivity and stability of AgNWs films in flexible electronics

Xin-Yi Luo,Yu-long Guo,Qing-Xin Meng,Ze-Long Bao,Bao-Hui Shao,Di Zhang,Hong-Zhang Geng

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have gained significant attention in the realm of flexible electronic devices due to their exceptional conductivity, stable mechanical properties, and chemical stability. Nonetheless, the inherent robustness and intricate post-processing techniques associated with AgNWs pose challenges to their further development. This study employed a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) crosslinking strategy and incorporated water immersion as a post-treatment step, significantly enhancing the conductivity and stability of flexible electronic devices. Introducing PEI to form a large number of hydrogen bonds with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersant bridged the originally loose PVP molecular chains into a three-dimensional cross-linked network. The IP-AgNWs thin film, prepared via the Meyer stick scraping method, exhibited remarkable electrical properties, achieving a sheet resistance of 3.2 Ω/sq. After exposure to air for one month, the sheet resistance was increased minimally to 4 Ω/sq, indicating commendable durability. When the IP-AgNWs film was employed as a heater, it can reach to a maximum temperature of 94 °C under an applied voltage of 2.5 V, maintaining temperature stability for up to 1 h. Furthermore, IP AgNWs thin films demonstrated excellent electromagnetic shielding performance, achieving a shielding efficiency of up to 43 dB. These findings offer novel insights into the application of AgNWs conductive thin films in the domain of flexible electrodes.

Yanlin Zhang,Xin Guo,Wei Wang,Li Chen,Li Liu,Hao Liu,Yin He

Strain sensors based on silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted much attention due to their wide application of electronic skin, smart textiles, and health monitoring. In this work, we report a flexible strain sensor based on an Ecoflex flexible substrate. AgNWs and Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doped as a conductive material. The excellent ductility and elongation at break in Ecoflex, as well as excellent heat resistance and impact resistance, can increase the test range and increase the sensing range of the sensor. AgNWs-based sensors enhance the sensitivity of the sensor to 118.19 while improving linearity and stability and reducing hysteresis. In addition, strain sensors can be utilized to monitor body movements such as finger flexion, leg movements, and so on. In this work, smart gloves are used to monitor finger movements using flexible strain sensors, which show its great potential for wearable electronics applications.

Oxidation-resistant and Ultrastable AZO-encapsulated AgNWs/CA-SWCNTs films enabling sustained EMI shielding and joule heating

Hao-Kai Lou,Peng-Fei Qian,Ze-Long Bao,Zhi-Liang Liu,Cheng-Yu Liu,Yu-Long Guo,Tian-Li Wang,Chun-Hao Chang,Wen-Hao Geng,Hong-Zhang Geng

Flexible and transparent conductive films are extensively employed in window defogging, wearable physiotherapy devices, transparent electrodes, electromagnetic interference shielding, flexible displays, etc. Though silver nanowires (AgNWs) and low-dimensional carbons (e.g., CNTs) and Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene accelerate field development, persistent challenges such as CNTs dispersion instability and AgNWs oxidation susceptibility limit practical implementation. This study designed a multilayer composite film on PET: a cross-network conductive layer of AgNWs and citric acid-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (CA-SWCNTs), encapsulated by an aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) protective layer via sol-gel method. AgNWs with high aspect ratio (average diameter 74 nm, length 53 μm) were synthesized by polyol method as the conductive backbone. CA-SWCNTs enhanced hydrophilicity and interfacial bonding, forming a stable conductive/thermal network. By suppressing oxidation and reflection, the AZO encapsulation layer increased the transmittance at 550 nm from 81.3 % to 82.1 % while maintaining a low sheet resistance of 5.4 Ω/sq. The composite films delivered an EMI shielding efficiency of 28.9 dB (8.2 GHz), achieved rapid Joule heating to 120 °C within 90 s at 7 V, demonstrated robust stability over 5500 s of cyclic operation, and exhibited environmental endurance with merely 19.9 % sheet resistance increase after 480 h air exposure as well as a 22.1 % increase after 100 cycles of tape peeling tests. This work provides an innovative strategy for multifunctional flexible transparent devices.

A flexible ultra-robust ZnO-AgNWs/PDMS-based hybrid nanogenerator for simultaneous energy harvesting and sensing applications

Wei Chen,Sheng-Zhe Zhao,Guo-Tao Xiang,Ran Lu,Jia-Lei Xu,Raul D. Rodriguez,Evgeniya Sheremet,Yong-Da Hu,Jin-Ju Chen

Developing high-power output, flexible, and wearable electronics is a significant challenge to materials science. We address this issue by creating a hybrid piezo-triboelectric nanogenerator (PTNG) based on a unique combination of porous ZnO, silver nanowires (AgNWs), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Our PTNG utilizes porous ZnO, which exhibits a significantly higher piezoelectric coefficient than its non-porous counterpart due to its increased surface area and enhanced atomic polarization. This unique combination of porous ZnO, AgNWs, and PDMS creates a synergistic effect, enhancing both piezoelectric and triboelectric outputs beyond what each material could achieve alone. For instance, our device generates an open-circuit voltage of 146 V and a short-circuit current of 1.1 µA under a pressure of 12.5 kPa and can track human motion while generating 60 V during regular walking. Deformation tests show excellent performance with prolonged use for up to two months. This robust, flexible, and highly sensitive PTNG opens opportunities for next-generation self-powered wearable sensors and energy harvesting applications in healthcare, fitness, and other emerging technologies, particularly those already using PDMS as a base material.

Cellulose nanofiber/MXene/AgNWs composite nanopaper with mechanical robustness for high-performance humidity sensor and smart actuator

Mimi Han,Wenhao Shen,Xin Tong,Jean-Pierre Corriou

Two-dimensional (2D) MXene provides large surface area for the adsorption and interaction of H 2 O molecules, which is highly desirable for the construction of humidity-sensing materials. However, the drawbacks, involving easy stacking and poor mechanical strength, pose a huge challenge to its practical application. Herein, inspired by nacred “brick-mortar” nanostructure , a nanopaper humidity sensor made of flexible TEMPO-oxidated cellulose nanofibers/MXene/silver nanowires (TOCNFs/MXene/AgNWs) was developed by vacuum-assisted filtration self-assembly strategy. The synergism of 1D TOCNFs, AgNWs “mortar” and 2D MXene “bricks” endows the nanopaper with superb tensile strength (146.3 MPa), modulus (16.9 GPa), and superior bending durability, and the obtained TOCNFs/MXene/AgNWs nanopaper humidity sensor exhibits high response value of 90% at 97% RH with a low MXene addition of 20 wt%. Furthermore, the unique photothermal response property of MXene accelerates the desorption of H 2 O molecules during sensor recovery, realizing the reversible sensing performance. The proposed humidity sensing mechanism lies in the variation of MXene interlayer d-spacing induced by adsorbing ambient H 2 O molecules and the swelling of TOCNFs. Lastly, the sensor demonstrates the possibilities in human respiration monitoring, non-contact sensing, and humidity actuating.

Tailoring SERS sensitivity in AgNWs-ZIF-67 substrates: Effects of MOF thickness and probe-pore size matching

Haoyang Wang,Jun Wang,Huamin Chen,Xinhai Fu,Jiaqi Fu,Yanqi Huang,Yang Zhang

In this study, we develop a filter paper-supported Ag nanowire (AgNWs) substrate coated with a tunable layer of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) metal-organic framework (MOF) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. The thickness of the ZIF-67 layer is precisely controlled by adjusting the soaking time, allowing us to investigate the influence of MOF thickness on SERS performance using probes with different sizes. Sensitivity for large, impenetrable molecules such as thiram and rhodamine 6G (R6G) are primarily governed by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), while smaller, penetrable molecules like 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) exhibit enhanced sensitivity driven by charge transfer (CT) effects due to their ability to penetrate the MOF layer. A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation reveals that the porous structure of ZIF-67 facilitates electric field propagation to the probe, maintaining significant LSPR effects even beyond 200 nm from the AgNWs. Practical applicability is demonstrated using a wiping mode to detect thiram spiked on apple surfaces, with reliable linear detection achieved across a wide range of concentrations. This study underscores the potential of MOF-based hybrid SERS substrates for real-world applications, leveraging the complementary roles of CT and electromagnetic (EM) mechanisms to enhance sensitivity.

Strain sensing, electromagnetic interference shielding, and antimicrobial performance of triple hierarchic fabric coated with AgNWs and polydopamine

Muchao Qu,Ziying Luo,Hongji Chen,Yijing Qin,Dirk W. Schubert,Guanda Yang,Lei Han,Fritjof Nilsson

For wearable smart textile sensors, stability, accuracy and multi-functionality are key objectives. Achieving the optimal application requires delicately balancing the crucial physical properties of strain sensors, presenting a key technological challenge. This study addresses these challenges by presenting several properties and potential applications of a triple hierarchic polymeric knitted fabric. The fabric incorporates an internal conductive network constructed with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and polydopamine (PDA) coating on its outer surface. This innovative textile successfully strikes a balance between strain sensing and electromagnetic interference shielding while concurrently exhibiting biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties. Significantly, acknowledging the susceptibility of measurements from polymer-based strain sensor materials to time drift, we introduce both a modeling approach and a novel calibration technique. This advancement facilitates the generation of stable cyclic sensing signals, even under substantial deformations of up to 80 % at a high stretching speed. Importantly, it provides a practical solution for addressing signal drift observed in flexible sensors when utilized in environments characterized by long-term and large deformations.

Asymmetric multilayered MXene-AgNWs/cellulose nanofiber composite films with antibacterial properties for high-efficiency electromagnetic interference shielding

Fudong Zhang,Penggang Ren,Zhengzheng Guo,Jin Wang,Zhengyan Chen,Ze Zong,Jie Hu,Yanling Jin,Fang Ren

Flexible, lightweight, robust and versatile properties are essential for the next generation of wearable as well as intelligent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In this work, multilayered films containing cellulose nanofiber (CNF) layers, CNF/MXene layers, and CNF/silver nanowires (CNF/AgNWs) layers were fabricated by an efficient and easy-to-use vacuum filtration method. Compared with a uniformly mixed film, the resultant layered composite films that loaded with a low MXene and AgNWs content exhibit superior mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 137 MPa, a strain at break of 5.7%, excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 61.9 dB, and higher EMI SE/t of 20,653 dB cm −1 . This is attributed to the high-performance CNF substrate, the highly efficient layered structures, and extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions. In particular, a high degree of ohmic loss of multiple interfaces and polarization relaxation of local defects, as well as an abundance of terminal groups, favor the loss of electromagnetic waves (EMW) within the material. In addition, the prepared multifunctional layered composite films also show good antibacterial properties. As a result, the obtained new kind of flexible layered structure EMI shielding composite films with excellent EMI shielding performance, and mechanical properties present promising application prospects in the fields of EMI shielding and protection for aerospace, portable, and wearable flexible electronic devices.

Facile Preparation of Dual Functional Wearable Devices Based on Hindered Urea Bond-Integrated Reprocessable Polyurea and AgNWs

Xingyuan Lu,Lun Zhang,Jihai Zhang,Chao Wang,Aimin Zhang

With the advancement of material science and electronic technology, wearable devices have been integrated into daily lives, no longer just a stirring idea in science fiction. In the future, robust multifunctionalized wearable devices with low cost and long-term service life are urgently required. However, preparing multifunctional wearable devices robust enough to resist harsh conditions using a commercially available raw material through a simple process still remains challenging. In this work, reprocessable polyurea (HUBTPU) with a hard segment of hindered urea bonds (HUBs) and a soft segment of polyether is synthesized via a facile one-pot method. The robust dual functional wearable devices were obtained by simply spray-coating silver nanowires (AgNWs) on HUBTPU elastomer substrates. Due to the dynamic combination and decomposition of the HUBs and hydrogen bonds at 130 °C, the robust elastomer demonstrates favorable adhesion to various substrates. Especially, the partially embedded AgNW structure is also achieved by using ethanol as a spray solvent. The adhesion of HUBTPU substrates and embedded structure leads to stronger interfacial adhesion and stability compared to non-adhesive substrates. The as-obtained HUBTPU electrodes are able to be heated to 115 °C by applying a low voltage and sensing the strain deformation caused by human movement, which means that the electrodes are endowed with both electrical heating capability and strain sensing functionality. Therefore, this strategy reveals a potential way to prepare multifunctional wearable devices using other conductive particles and adhesive functional polymer substrates.

Flexible high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding AF/MXene/AgNWs based fabrics with multiple functions and enhanced environmental stability

Shuangshuang Liu,Yinghao Liu,Xiangnan Wang,Bo Wang,Sijie Guo,Xue Bai,Jian Tian,Nannan Wu,Jiurong Liu

The rapid evolution of wireless technologies has intensified electromagnetic (EM) pollution, promoting the application of advanced multifunctional shielding materials. Herein, we developed aramid fiber (AF) based composite fabrics by sequentially loading Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets and silver nanowires (AgNWs) onto fabric substrates. The optimized AF/MXene/AgNWs structure exhibits exceptional electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 63.93–96.75 dB in the X-band, coupled with superior shielding efficiency (SSE/t) of 3995–5183.03 dB cm 2  g −1 at a thickness of 0.34 mm. This performance stems from synergistic conductive networks formed by MXene and AgNWs, enabling multi-scale EM wave attenuation through reflection, ohmic loss, and interfacial polarization. Beyond EMI shielding, the composite demonstrates integrated multifunctionality including infrared stealth capability, rapid electrothermal response, precise photothermal regulation, antibacterial efficacy, and flame retardancy. The encapsulation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) further ensures environmental stability, and the fabrics maintained 94.3 % EMI shielding (48.93 dB) after 30 days of oxidation. The EMI shielding efficiency was maintained at 47.98 dB after salt-spray corrosion for 48 h. With excellent mechanical flexibility, this multifunctional fabric presents significant potential for next-generation wearable electronics, medical thermal therapy systems, and aerospace applications.

Jie Ding,Zi Qiao,Yusheng Zhang,Danrui Wei,Suping Chen,Jiajia Tang,Lu Chen,Dan Wei,Jing Sun,Hongsong Fan

Conductive and self-healing hydrogel sensor is perspective in human-machine interaction applications. However, the design of ideal self-healing hydrogels are always challenging. Herein, by introducing disulfide modified Ag nanowires (AgNWs), we show a novel self-healing hydrogel strain sensor with superior mechanics, conductivity, antibacterial property , and firstly realizing of self-healing with both recovery of mechanics and sensing properties. We demonstrate that the covalent and reversible non-covalent hydrophobic blocks in hydrophobic modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM) achieves the basic self-healing network; dextran with plentiful hydroxyl groups synergistic helps the self-healing by hydrogen bonds ; disulfide on the AgNWs surface forms a NIR-responsive and dynamic Ag-S coordination bridge between HMPAM and AgNWs. The resulted hydrogel sensor exhibits comprehensive electromechanical properties, and precisely monitors human motion and subtle electromyography (EMG) signals. Importantly, we firstly achieved the recovery of sensing properties on human motion detection and EMG signal detection after self-healing. This work provides a promising exploration to manufacture bionic strain sensors for potential applications in wearable electronics.
