Highly efficient As(III) removal via alkali-stable nanofiltration for sustainable water purification

Xianyu Kang,Xiangfang Liu,Qingchun Ge

Conventional polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes (PA-M 0 ) exhibit poor As(III) removal efficiency primarily due to the neutral molecular form (H 3 AsO 3 ) of As(III) under typical conditions. Although alkaline environments can convert As(III) into an anionic species to enhance separation, most NF membranes lack chemical stability at high pH. Herein, we develop a series of alkali-resistant NF membranes (PA-M T , T = 1–24 h, representing the reaction time) through H₂SO₄/EtOH-induced physical swelling and chemical reconstruction of PA-M 0 , enabling efficient As(III) removal in alkaline media. The optimized membrane, PA-M 6 h , improves As(III) rejection substantially from 19.9 % to 90.2 % as feed pH increases from 7 to 10, while maintaining a high water flux of 17.7 LMH/bar, This performance considerably surpasses that of PA-M 0 and previously reported NF systems (typically 10 – 60 % rejection). Furthermore, PA-M 6 h exhibits exceptional antifouling properties, sustaining 91.5 % As(III) rejection and a stable flux of 13.7 LMH/bar over extended cycles in the presence of humic acid foulants — more than doubling the removal efficiency of PA-M 0 (5.9 LMH/bar). This study advances molecular-scale interfacial engineering in membrane design, promoting the development of environmentally sustainable separation technologies and providing a scalable solution for arsenic-safe water purification.

Calcium Sulfite Solids Activated by Iron for Enhancing As(III) Oxidation in Water

Minjuan Cai,Sen Quan,Jinjun Li,Feng Wu,Gilles Mailhot

Desulfurized gypsum (DG) as a soil modifier imparts it with bulk solid sulfite. The Fe(III)–sulfite process in the liquid phase has shown great potential for the rapid removal of As(III), but the performance and mechanism of this process using DG as a sulfite source in aqueous solution remains unclear. In this work, employing solid CaSO3as a source of SO32−, we have studied the effects of different conditions (e.g., pH, Fe dosage, sulfite dosage) on As(III) oxidation in the Fe(III)–CaSO3system. The results show that 72.1% of As(III) was removed from solution by centrifugal treatment for 60 min at near-neutral pH. Quenching experiments have indicated that oxidation efficiencies of As(III) are due at 67.5% to HO•, 17.5% to SO5•−and 15% to SO4•−. This finding may have promising implications in developing a new cost-effective technology for the treatment of arsenic-containing water using DG.Keywords:desulfurized gypsum;Fe(III);CaSO3;As(III);resource utilization

Rapid As(III) oxidation mediated by activated carbons: Reactive species vs. direct oxidation

Changyin Zhu,Chenyan Xue,Mingquan Huang,Fengxiao Zhu,Guodong Fang,Dixiang Wang,Shaochong Liu,Ning Chen,Song Wu,Dongmei Zhou

Activated carbon (AC) is widely used in pollutant removal , due to its adsorption capacity, conductivity and catalytic performance. However, few studies focus on the redox activity of AC and its role in pollutant transformation. In this study, we found that AC could efficiently mediate the oxidation of As(III) and the process of As(III) oxidation was pH and oxygen concentration dependent. In general, the presence of O 2 promoted As(III) oxidation at pH 3.0–9.5. Acidic and alkaline conditions favored As(III) oxidation regardless of whether there was oxygen, but the mechanisms involved were quite different when there was oxygen. At pH 3.0, reactive species (H 2 O 2 and ·OH) were generated and accounted for As(III) oxidation; at pH 9.5, As(III) was directly oxidized by O 2 (electron transfer from As(III) to O 2 mediated by carbon matrix) under aerobic conditions . Pre-oxidation and cyclic experiments results indicated the ability of AC to oxidize As(III) at pH 9.5 was sustainable and recyclable. This study provided a new insight in pollutant oxidation by AC in the environment.

SH/Mn-surface-functionalized MOF Multifunctional Adsorbent for As(III) Efficient Removal from Wastewater

Zang Shuyan,Zong Sitong,Wei Lan,Liu Lihong,Zhang Renhao,Kou Wei

Arsenic (As) contamination poses severe environmental risks, especially for developing countries. In this paper, an innovative binary (Mn and -SH) multifunctional adsorbent, ZIF-67-SH@Mn, was successfully synthesized as a prospective absorbent to efficiently remove As(III) from wastewater. The structure of ZIF-67-SH@Mn was characterized before and after the adsorption of As(III) using SEM–EDS, FTIR, BET, pH pzc and XRD. SEM–EDS confirmed the successful introduction of Mn and S, BET analysis revealed a high specific surface area of 197.21 m 2 /g, and FTIR demonstrated the key role of -SH groups in As(III) coordination. These findings indicate that Mn oxidation and -SH bonding synergistically enhance As(III) removal. The leaching experiment showed that the release amounts of Mn 2 ⁺ and Co 2 ⁺ from the adsorbent within 48 h complies with national standards. Batch adsorption experiments determined the optimal conditions: initial concentration 1 mg/L, temperature 298 K, pH 5, reaction time 4 h, and using an ultra-low adsorbent dosage ZIF-67-SH@Mn only 0.2 g/L, achieving As(III) removal efficiency of 70.33% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 21.84 mg/g. The adsorbent achieved 79.36% As(III) removal efficiency in river (RW) and wine water (WW), with RW ≥ WW ≥ DI performance regardless of initial concentration. The adsorption of As(III) by ZIF-67-SH@Mn followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, indicating a chemisorption-dominated and monolayer adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis revealed a spontaneous and endothermic process. The intraparticle diffusion model indicated that particle internal diffusion not only determines the adsorption process but also plays an important role in surface adsorption in the rate-determining step. The adsorption mechanism of ZIF-67-SH@Mn for As(III) involved electrostatic adsorption, multifunctional group interactions (including -NH, -OH, -SH), and oxidation. ZIF-67-SH@Mn exhibits excellent As(III) removal efficiency and is a highly efficient, low-cost adsorbent with good application prospects in wastewater remediation.

Multilayered TNAs/SnO2/PPy/β-PbO2 anode achieving boosted electrocatalytic oxidation of As(III)

Wenlan Ji,Yuanjie Xiong,Yuan Wang,Tian C. Zhang,Shaojun Yuan

Dealing with arsenic pollution has been of great concern owing to inherent toxicity of As(III) to environments and human health. Herein, a novel multilayered SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 structure on TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 ) was synthesized by a multi-step electrodeposition process as an efficient electrocatalyst for As(III) oxidation in aqueous solution. Such TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 electrode exhibited a higher charge transfer, tolerable stability, and high oxygen evolution potential (OEP). The intriguing structure with a SnO 2 , PPy , and β -PbO 2 active layers provided a larger electrochemical active area for electrocatalytic As(III) oxidation. The as-synthesized TNAs/SnO 2 /PPy/ β -PbO 2 anode achieved drastically enhanced As(Ⅲ) conversion efficiency of 90.72% compared to that of TNAs/ β -PbO 2 at circa 45.4%. The active species involved in the electrocatalytic oxidation process included superoxide radical (•O 2 − ), sulfuric acid root radicals (•SO 4 − ), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). This work offers a new strategy to construct a high-efficiency electrode to meet the requirements of favorable electrocatalytic oxidation properties, good stability, and high electrocatalytic activity for As(III) transformation to As(V).

3D printing of TiO2 nano particles containing macrostructures for As(III) removal in water

Dingyi Wang,Tingting Zhi,Lihong Liu,Li Yan,Wei Yan,Yinyin Tang,Bin He,Ligang Hu,Chuanyong Jing,Guibin Jiang

Nanomaterials play a crucial role in various areas due to their extraordinary chemical and physical properties. Loading microscopic nanomaterials onto macrostructures is inevitable for their implementation from laboratory experiments to practical applications. Nevertheless, the geometries of conventional supporting structures are usually limited and nanomaterials are easy to be inhomogeneously distributed, aggregated, and lost. Therefore, controllably configuring nanomaterials into sophisticated three-dimensional macroscopic structures without sacrificing their inherent properties remains challenging. Here we utilize the advantages of 3D printing technology to realize this purpose. As a proof-of-concept, the application of 3D stereolithography printed macrostructures containing TiO 2 nano particles (TiO 2 NPs) for direct adsorption removal of As(III) in water was demonstrated. The morphology and distribution of TiO 2 NPs mounted on printed macrostructures were initially characterized. Then batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the 3D printing process, TiO 2 NPs doped concentration and TiO 2 NP size as well as adsorption kinetics and isotherms. We also demonstrated that 3D printed adsorption structures could be easily reused over 10 times and were effective for raw arsenic-polluted groundwater samples. Our findings show that 3D printing provides a promising route to design and fabricate customized macrostructures endowed with specific properties of nanomaterials.

A temperature-resistant ultrasensitive fluorescence aptasensor for the As(III) detection in aquatic products

Xinpei Li,Shiquan Qian,Xu Yan,Min Li,Jing Li,Min Yuan,Fei Xu

Background An aptamer-imprinted polymer was synthesized as an As(III) aptasensor for the first time by stabilizing the recognition conformation of the aptamer. Chlorophyll-modified carbon quantum dots were doped into the polymer with fluorescence enhancement to As(III), thereby developing an efficient “turn-on” aptasensor. Results The interactions between the aptamer and functional monomer with As(III) were analyzed using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that both were hydrogen bonds, but there was a significant difference in their binding energies. Therefore, this aptasensor exhibited a two-stage linear response to As(III) over a broad range of 0.9 nM–500 nM, with an LOD of 0.89 nM. And the detection time is only 10 min. Compared to the traditional aptamer biosensor without imprinting, the proposed aptasensor's limited spatial domain effectively minimized interference from environmental temperature fluctuations, thereby ensuring the detection stability within the range of 20 °C–60 °C. Furthermore, its specificity for the target detection was significantly improved in comparison to the traditional imprinted polymer without aptamer. Enzymatic hydrolysis was employed as the pretreatment method for the aquatic samples. By integrating with aptasensor, a practical method with an excellent accuracy ranging from 86.34 % to 105.59 % for As(III) detection in aquatic products was also developed. Significance This study contributes to the development of synergistic recognition and detection technologies based on multiple molecular recognition elements.

Oxidative removal of As(III) by polyacrylonitrile@Ag-Ag2O/schwertmannite nanofiber under visible light

Jing Han,Hai-Tao Ren,Ting-Ting Li,Bing-Chiuan Shiu,Yong-Gui Li,Jia-Horng Lin,Ching-Wen Lou

Visible light response PAN@Ag-Ag2O/Sch (PAN@AS, schwertmannite and polyacrylonitrile abbreviated as Sch and PAN) nanofibers with different mass ratios were synthesized by electrospinning technology and pH-induced precipitation reaction. X-Ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the formation of Ag-Ag2O/Sch heterojunction and Ag-Ag2O nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of Sch. The prepared nanofibers have high oxidative removal performance for As(III) under visible light. In the PAN@AS0.10 system, the total As removal percent can reach 90.96% after 120 min irradiation at pH 4.0. The scavenger experiments confirmed that the main active substances of the PAN@AS0.10 system were h+ and •OH. The high oxidation and removal performance of the PAN@AS0.10 composite for As(III) was attributed to the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and high adsorption capacity of Sch for As under acidic conditions. This research provides a new material for the oxidation and removal of pollutants in water [such as As(III)] and also provides a research basis for the preparation of recyclable photocatalysts.

Novel activation of sulfite by perovskite CaCu3Ti4O12 for As(III) oxidation: Kinetics and mechanism

Qing Shao,Haike Yang,Yingxi Luo,Pan Yang,Liying Long,Yiqun Chen,Zizheng Liu,Feng Wu,Pengchao Xie,Jun Ma

A new activation technology for sulfite (S(IV)) using a perovskite CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) catalyst has been proposed to remediate the As(III) polluted water. When 0.05 g·L −1 CCTO and 0.4 mmol·L −1 S(IV) were mixed, 90.6% of As(III) could be removed in 30 min at an initial pH of 8.0. Dissolved oxygen played an indispensable role in the reaction. CCTO can interact with S(IV) via a heterogeneous catalytic route on its surface. Electrochemical characterization indicated that the electron transfer process between the surface Cu/ Ti atoms and S(IV) ions evoked the activation of S(IV), leading to the generation of SO 4 •− , which played a dominant role in the oxidation of As(III). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have disclosed the spontaneous adsorption of sulfite on CCTO surface. A kinetics study determined the steady-state concentration of SO 4 •− to be 4.29 × 10 −14   mol·L −1 , which reacts with As(III) with a second-order reaction rate constant of 3.83 × 10 10   L·mol −1 ·s −1 . Furthermore, the CCTO catalyst was highly reusable, the structure of which did not significantly alter during the reaction. Therefore, the CCTO/S(IV) system is a promising and efficient advanced oxidation technique for the purification of As(III) in water.

Deep remediation of As(III) in water by La-Ce bimetal oxide modified carbon framework

Yuanfeng Wei,Jing Zhao,Weijian Yang,Zhiyuan Qiu,Yufen Xia,Zhimin Wang,Yuxin Li,Chengbin Liu

Arsenic contamination of groundwater harms the health of millions of people, especially As(III), which is extremely toxic and difficult to remediate. Herein, we fabricated a reliable La-Ce binary oxide-anchored carbon framework foam (La-Ce/CFF) adsorbent for As(III) deep removal. Its open 3D macroporous structure ensures fast adsorption kinetic. The incorporation of an appropriate amount of La could enhance the affinity of La-Ce/CFF for As(III). The adsorption capacity of La-Ce 10 /CFF reached 40.01 mg/g. It could purify the As(III) concentrations to drinking standard level (< 10 μg/L) over the pH ranges 3–10. It also possessed excellent anti-interference ability to the interfering ions. In addition, it worked reliably in the simulated As(III)-contaminated groundwater and river water. La-Ce 10 /CFF could easily apply in fixed-bed, and La-Ce 10 /CFF (1 g) packed column could purify 4580 BV (36.0 L) of As(III)-contaminated groundwater. When further considering the excellent reusability of La-Ce 10 /CFF, it is a promising and reliable adsorbent for As(III) deep remediation.

Metal-Free Electro-Activated Sulfite Process for As(III) Oxidation in Water Using Graphite Electrodes

Tao Luo,Ying Peng,Long Chen,Jinjun Li,Feng Wu,Danna Zhou

Transition-metal-activated sulfite [S(IV)] processes for water decontamination have recently received intense attention in the field of decontamination by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the drawback with respect to the secondary metal sludge contamination involved in various AOPs has been argued often. In this work, we developed a novel electro-sulfite (ES) process using stable and low-cost graphite electrodes to address that concern. Arsenite [As(III)] was used as the target compound for removal by the ES process because of its wide presence and high toxicity. Parameters, including cell voltage, S(IV) concentration, solution pH, and water matrix, and the mechanisms for reactions on anode and cathode were investigated in electrolytic cells containing one or two compartments, respectively. The results show that the ES process using 1 mM S(IV) and 2 V cell voltage oxidizes 5 μM As(III) at a rate of 0.127 min–1, which is 15-fold higher than mere electrolysis without S(IV) addition (0.008 min–1) at pH 7. Further studies using radical scavengers and electron spin resonance assays demonstrated that oxysulfur radicals (i.e., SO5•– and SO4•–) and HO• are responsible for As(III) oxidation in the ES process. However, HO2• produced via the oxygen reduction reaction in the EO process plays a major role in As(III) oxidation, which explains the lower reaction rate in the absence of S(IV). The effectiveness of the ES process was moreover evidenced by 60–82% As(III) oxidation in field water within 40 min. Overall, this work realizes the metal-free activation of S(IV) and significantly leverages the S(IV)-based water treatment technologies.
