3D printed B4C-based honeycomb ceramic composite and its potential application in three-dimensional armor structure

Jing Xue,Yongzhao Hou,Wei Chu,Zhongya Zhang,Zhichao Dong,Lijuan Zhang,Guangwu Wen

B 4 C ceramic holds enormous application potential in the lightweight armors. In order to simplify the design of armor materials, 3D printed B 4 C-based honeycomb ceramic via DIW technique with high solid content were fabricated using printing ink with B 4 C powder, BYK-2070 dispersant, BAC solvent, PSZ adhesive and DCP cross-linking agent. The role of each constituent and the printing parameters of such honeycomb ceramic were investigated. In addition, epoxy resin was employed to impregnate PSZ-modified B 4 C-based honeycomb ceramic to prepare three-dimensional structure hybrid composites with excellent mechanical strength (172 MPa of flexural strength, 4.95 KJ/m 2 of impact strength) and physiochemical properties (7.52 % of open porosity, 5.5 % of water absorption, 1.35 g/cm −1 of density, and 5.2 GPa of hardness). The exceptional performances of the three-dimensional structure hybrid composite come from the bioinspired structure design, new chemical bonds (such as the formation of B–C, C–N and Si–B bonds) formed in the ceramic material and cross-linking reaction occurred during curing between epoxy resin and PSZ. The findings in this study provide an effective strategy for the fabrication of B 4 C-based composites with controllable structures and mechanical performances and exhibit the potential application in complex armor structures.

Construction and toughening mechanism of B4C@TiB2 core–shell structural units inside the SiC ceramic

Yingjie Shi,Weixing Li,Xiaorong Zhang,Wenjie Yang,Jingbo Mu,Yu Dong,Hongwei Che,Yanming Wang,Yafeng Wang,Zhixiao Zhang

Core–shell structural B 4 C@TiB 2 composite powders were synthesized via the molten salt method using micron-sized B 4 C and TiH 2 powders as raw materials. Furthermore, a SiC composite ceramic with B 4 C@TiB 2 core–shell structural units as the toughening phase was prepared by spark plasma sintering using SiC powder and the obtained B 4 C@TiB 2 composite powder as starting powders. The effects of calcination temperature and raw material ratio on the phase compositions and microstructure of the B 4 C@TiB 2 composite powders were studied, and the synthesis mechanism of the B 4 C@TiB 2 composite powder was explored. The formation mechanism of B 4 C@TiB 2 core–shell toughening units inside the SiC matrix was investigated, and the toughening mechanism of the SiC–B 4 C@TiB 2 composite ceramic was discussed. Results show that the B 4 C@TiB 2 core–shell units in the SiC matrix can induce a complex crack propagation mode and consume abundant crack propagation energy. Therefore, a high fracture toughness of 6.47 ± 0.32 MPa m 1/2 is realized for the SiC–B 4 C@TiB 2 composite ceramics.

Strengthened high-temperature resistance in B4C/SiC/2024Al composite via SiC nanowires pinning grain boundary

Andong Hua,Yishi Su,Yunpeng Cai,Di Zhang,Qiubao Ouyang

Aiming at developing new B 4 C/Al neutron absorbing materials with both high thermal neutron absorption performance and high-temperature strength for neutron shielding applications, B 4 C/SiC/2024Al composites were fabricated by powder metallurgy process. TEM results revealed that SiC nanowires were distributed at Al grain boundaries and bonded tightly with Al matrix . Grain boundary sliding and grain rotation were efficiently restricted and prevented dislocation annihilation at GBs. The thermal stability of composite was improved by adding SiC nanowires and achieved a high-temperature strength of 163.4 ± 1.8 MPa at 573 K, which was increased by 92.2 % compared to the composite without addition of SiC nanowires. By analyzing the strengthening mechanism , dislocation strengthening was the dominant factor in the improvement of high-temperature strength. As for neutron absorption application, B 4 C/SiC/2024Al composite exhibited not only good high-temperature strength but also remarkable neutron absorption performance and matched thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion .

Dynamic mechanical response and damage mechanisms of nacre-inspired 2024Al/B4C composite at elevated temperature

Yang Wang,Qiang Liu,Biao Zhang,Haoqian Zhang,Yicheng Jin,Zhaoxin Zhong,Jian Ye,Yuhan Ren,Feng Ye,Wen Wang

In this study, the nacre-like 2024Al/B 4 C composites with a lamellar-interpenetrated architecture, virtually free of pores and cracks, were fabricated through combining freeze casting with pressure infiltration , and their quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties were investigated over the temperature ranged from 25 to 500 °C. The dynamic compressive strength and strain were greater than quasi-static ones due to strain-rate hardening and adiabatic heating softening mechanisms. Regardless of strain rates, the compressive strength decreased with temperature, while the failure strain increased. This could be explained by four main fracture phenomena including cracking of B 4 C and intermetallic compounds (IMCs), matrix deformation and interfacial debonding. The matrix deformation prevailed actively at high temperatures, with a reduced overall trend towards cracking and interfacial debonding. The interfacial debonding and particle cracking acted as the dominant factors that deteriorated the compressive behavior, whereas the soften matrix induced by elevated test temperatures effectively blocked the crack propagation that favorably worked for the strain. As the temperature was raised, the softened matrix destabilized particle skeleton with the deformation behavior of the composites determined by the alloy matrix. However, recrystallization occurred within the alloy matrix, accompanied by a reduction in dislocation density, which degraded the strength of the composites. The elevated temperatures significantly enhanced the strain rate sensitivity of the composites because of the matrix softening yielding a greater proportionate enhancement of particle stress at high temperature than at low temperature.

Influence of particulate B4C size on microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior in nanostructured Al matrix during heat treatment

Chuandong Wu,Yuehui Lu,Guoqiang Luo,Qiang Shen,Zhanghua Gan,Jing Liu

We reported the influence of particle size (micro-B 4 C and nano-B 4 C) on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties in nanostructured Al matrix during heat treatment. The results indicated the incorporation of nano-B 4 C could significantly inhibit the grain growth of Al during heat treatment. The segregation layer in Al/B 4 C interface increased after heat treatment for all the composites samples. High density of Guinier-Preston (GP) zones and platelet η' could be observed in grain interior of all samples, while some coarse η phases (MgZn 2 ) could be only detected in grain boundaries of AA7075 alloys and the composites with micro-B 4 C. The yield strength of the composites with the incorporation of nano-B 4 C could reach up to 958 ± 28 MPa after heat treatment, which could be ascribed to the Hall-Petch strengthening and dislocation strengthening.

High damage-tolerance bio-inspired B4C/2024Al composites with adjustable mechanical performance by tuning ceramic thickness

Yang Wang,Qiang Liu,Biao Zhang,Haoqian Zhang,Yicheng Jin,Zhaoxin Zhong,Jian Ye,Yuhan Ren,Feng Ye,Wen Wang

Freeze casting is a promising approach for assembling lamellar metal-ceramic composites with an exceptional combination of strength and toughness. Although these mechanical properties can be optimized by regulating the microstructure of porous ceramic structures, the effect of lamellar thickness is rarely mentioned, especially for B 4 C/Al composites. Herein, by controlling the freezing temperature, we used freeze casting to create nacre-like B 4 C scaffolds with identical ceramic content yet different lamellar thicknesses and then infiltrated them with 2024Al alloy. The effects of lamellar thickness on the damage-tolerance behavior and toughening mechanisms are discussed. The refinement of lamellae decreases the probability of observing catastrophic flaws in ceramic layers, increasing strength from 534 ± 14 to 578 ± 15 MPa and increasing crack-initiation toughness (K Ic ) from 9.2 ± 0.6 to 11.4 ± 0.2 MPa m 1/2 . These composites exhibit higher damage tolerance resulting from several toughening mechanisms, such as plastic deformation , crack deflection and blunting, and the uncracked-ligament bridging of ductile metal layers, which is reflected in the stable crack propagation during fracture and rising R-curve behavior. Importantly, coarsening of the structure of composites allows the fracture behaviors transform from single to multiple crack propagation, thus absorbing much more fracture energy, with the valid crack-growth toughness (K Jc ) enhancing markedly from 17.1 ± 2.4 to 29.8 ± 2.3 MPa m 1/2 .

Mechanical property improvement of B4C ceramic hollow microspheres by doping carbon nanotubes at low-temperature

Xiuling Wang,Ruichong Chen,Diyin Ye,Dan Ruan,Jianqi Qi,Zhijun Liao,Tiecheng Lu

Boron carbide (B 4 C) ceramic hollow microspheres are considered to be a potential ignition capsule for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). B 4 C hollow microspheres with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained by pressureless calcination at low temperature with the addition of 2 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Notably, the microstructure of as-prepared microspheres directly reveals the strengthening mechanism is bridge toughening and pullout of CNTs. The density of B 4 C hollow microspheres reached 73.2% T.D. at 1000 °C when the doping amount of CNTs is 2 wt%. The crush load of B 4 C ceramic hollow microspheres (2 wt% CNTs) calcinated at 1000 °C is 25.3 N, while the crush load of the undoped samples under the same conditions is only 8.0 N. The improvement of mechanical properties of B 4 C hollow microspheres reduces the sensitivity of hollow microspheres to hydrodynamic instability in the high-temperature and high-pressure environment during fusion reaction, which can achieve relatively high fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, the B 4 C hollow microspheres with high surface finish and high strength as ICF target pellets can greatly reduce the influence of hydrodynamics instability on implosion and effectively improve the gain of the target.

Thermal oxidation and compressive failure behavior of ZrSi2–B4C modified phenolic resin-based composite

Di Zhu,Minxian Shi,Zhixiong Huang,Yan Qin,Huadong Fu,Zongyi Deng

Phenolic resin-based ablative materials have gained significant attention in the aerospace sector in recent years. In this study, TGA-DSC, FT-IR, XRD and XPS were employed to the thermal stability and phase transformation of the ZrSi 2 –B 4 C modified quartz fiber/boron containing phenolic resin (QF/BPR) composite. The compressive failure behavior of the composite at 600–1200 °C was studied through SEM and high-speed camera techniques. The results indicated that the compression strength of the composite decreased to a minimum at 600 °C and increased at 800–1200 °C. The composite exhibited different failure modes at different temperature: shear fracture at room temperature (RT), debonding of the fiber bundles at 600 °C, fiber buckling and fiber shear fracture at 800 °C, fiber buckling and delamination at 1000–1200 °C. The improvement in thermal stability of composite was primarily attributed to the formation of ZrO 2 , SiO 2 and B 2 O 3 , which covered the fiber and effectively transmitted the load, leading to an enhanced strength of the interface between the fiber and resin.

Effect of graphite content on properties of B4C-W2B5 ceramic composites by in situ reaction of B-Gr-WC

Deng Pan,Shufeng Li,Xin Zhang,Bo Pan,Shengyin Zhou,Yabo Fu,Katsuyoshi Kondoh

Strip-shaped W 2 B 5 reinforced B 4 C ceramic composites were prepared via in situ reaction of boron(B)-graphite(Gr)-WC system by powder metallurgy (P/M). In order to study the effect of the graphite content on the properties of the as-fabricated ceramic composites, the powder mixture of B-Gr-WC with various amounts of Gr powder were blended and consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintering parameters were shown as following: sintering pressure was set as 30 MPa; The three-step sintering temperature was 1100-1550-1700°C and the duration time was set as 5-5-6 minutes, respectively. In situ formed strip-shaped W 2 B 5 particles were dispersed homogeneously in B 4 C matrix, which resulted in a remarkable improvement on the fracture toughness and mechanical properties. Appropriate 5vol% residual Gr in the composite shows positive effect on the mechanical properties which achieved an optimal counter-balance of fracture toughness and hardness, the relative density was 99.8%, the Vickers hardness can reach 30.2 GPa, and the fracture toughness was 11.9 MPa·m 1/2 when the sintering temperature was set at 1700°C.

The Surface Cracking Resistance of Al2O3-Modified SiCf/SiC-B4C Composites after Cyclic Oxidation in Wet Environment

Qingliang Shan,Qinglei Wang,Yudong Xue,Jianbao Hu,Jinshan Yang,Haijun Zhou,Guangxiang Zhu,Shaoming Dong

Aluminum oxide is introduced into SiC f /(SiC + B 4 C) composites to improve the surface cracking resistance after oxidizing at 1100 °C in O 2 /H 2 O (40/60) atmosphere. Research on morphology observation of oxidized composites reveals that Al 2 O 3 can lead to the formation of a dense and smooth oxidation layer, resulting in a relatively shallow oxygen penetration depth. In-depth studies on acoustic emission reveal that composites with Al 2 O 3 can improve the surface cracking resistance after oxidizing at 1100 °C in O 2 /H 2 O (40/60) atmosphere since the retention rates of σ min (first acoustic emission [AE] stress) and σ onset (AE onset stress) are significantly increased compared with virgin composites. Moreover, a small number of cumulative events and steep slope of strength–time curves at the initial stage further confirm the improvement of surface cracking resistance after oxidation.

Fabrication, microstructure characterization and mechanical properties of B4C microparticles and SiC nanowires hybrid reinforced aluminum matrix composites

Andong Hua,Yishi Su,Yunpeng Cai,Xiaozhen Wang,Kan Liu,He Cao,Di Zhang,Qiubao Ouyang

Due to the high modulus, high strength , low density, excellent wear resistance and good neutron absorption, the boron carbide (B 4 C) particle reinforced aluminum (Al) matrix composites have been widely applied in the aerospace, weaponry, transportation and neutron shielding fields. In response to the increasing requirement of better strength -ductility matching of B 4 C/Al composites, introducing a nano-scale reinforcement into the B 4 C/Al composites becomes an attractive research focus. In this work, the SiC nanowires were ball-milled with Al powders, and then the SiC/Al composite powders were mixed with B 4 C microparticles . Thus, the 15vol. % B 4 C/SiC/Al composites with different volume fractions of SiC nanowires were fabricated by hot-pressing sintering and hot extrusion. B 4 C microparticles and SiC nanowires are uniformly dispersed in the B 4 C/SiC/Al composites, while the introduced SiC nanowires effectively decrease the Al matrix grain sizes . B 4 C/SiC/Al composites produce the better strength-ductility matching than that of B 4 C/Al composites, while the 15vol. % B 4 C/SiC/Al composite with 1vol. % SiC nanowires achieved the best strength-ductility matching. It generates the 281.7 ± 2.7 MPa in yield strength, 351.2 ± 0.1 MPa in ultimate tensile strength and 5.9 ± 0.7% in failure elongation, which are increased by 18.2%, 15.1% and 13.5% compared to the B 4 C/Al composites. Uniformly dispersed B 4 C microparticles and SiC nanowires largely block the dislocation motions and improve the dislocation storage capacity, which results in a more significant hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening effect in the B 4 C/SiC/Al composites. Moreover, the B 4 C/Al interfacial transition regions with the added SiC nanowires becomes stronger, which can enhance the load transfer efficiency of the B 4 C/Al interfaces as a result of the existing dislocation hardening zones. In conclusion, it is a good strategy to combine the synergistic strengthening effect of micro-scale and nano-scale reinforcements in the metal matrix composites .

Controlling the structure and mechanical properties of porous B4C ceramics with unidirectionally aligned channels using sintering additives

Yang Wang,Qiang Liu,Biao Zhang,Junjie Ding,Haoqian Zhang,Yicheng Jin,Zhaoxin Zhong,Wen Wang,Feng Ye

To date, surprisingly few studies about the structure-property correlations in porous B 4 C ceramics with unidirectionally aligned channels have been reported. In this study, bimodally lamellar porous B 4 C ceramics aligned along the freezing direction were produced via freeze casting method using Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 as the sintering additive. The porosity, pore size distribution , morphology, and compressive strength could be effectively tailored by the addition of Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 . The volume shrinkage ranged from 1.66 to 2.42%, much lower than the reported values of porous ceramics . A low-melting eutectic liquid was observed to exert significant effects on the sintering and strength of the porous B 4 C ceramics. By varying the contents of the Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 sintering additive, the preforms displayed a rather high porosity of 78.71–82.01%, a low closed porosity of 0.37–0.86% and an excellent compressive strength of 1.76–3.28 MPa. Meanwhile, the wavelength, lamellar thickness, and pore diameter decreased as the Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 content increased. Adding Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 can tailor the structures of porous B 4 C ceramics prepared by freeze casting, which is of great significance for the preforms with low shrinkage, low density, high porosity, and satisfactory mechanical performance.
