Mussel-inspired modification of Si-PDA-BNNS-OH@PDA-CNF composite films with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Meng Ma,Dezhong Wang,Yan Liao,Sicheng Huang,Si Chen,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Yulu Zhu,Xu Wang

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) feature a three-dimensional nanofiber network, excellent mechanical properties, and abundant surface hydroxyl groups, facilitating the integration of boron nitride (BN) for fabricating flexible composite films with high thermal conductivity. However, achieving a balance between high thermal conductivity and strong mechanical strength at high BN loadings remains a formidable challenge. A mussel-inspired strategy is employed, in which BNNS-OH and CNF are coated with polydopamine (PDA) to improve their interfacial adhesion and compatibility. The PDA-BNNS-OH is then silanized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to acquire a positive charge, enabling its subsequent electrostatic adsorption onto PDA-CNF and assembly into a robust film. At a high filler loading of 60 wt%, the resultant composite film achieves an outstanding in-plane thermal conductivity of 18.9 W m −1  K −1 , a 1250% improvement relative to the pure CNF film. Remarkably, this marked enhancement is achieved without compromising the film's high electrical insulation capability, as evidenced by a volume resistivity exceeding 10 11  Ω m, while still delivering a substantial tensile strength of 49.5 MPa. These synergistic enhancements are attributed to the optimized interfacial bonding, which effectively reduces thermal resistance and suppresses phonon scattering. This interface design strategy offers a promising pathway for developing advanced thermal management materials.

Synergistic suppression of supercooling and thermal performance enhancement of sodium acetate trihydrate using BNNS/Al₂O₃ composite nucleating agents

Pang Qingyong,Meng Xiangqing,Han Junfeng,Jing Min,Ma Fukun

Sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) possesses a high latent heat of phase transition; however, its high degree of supercooling, low thermal conductivity, and susceptibility to phase separation limit its practical applications. This study proposes an XG-stabilized BNNS/Al 2 O 3 composite nucleation modification strategy that suppresses SAT supercooling through the combined regulation of Al 2 O 3 particles and two-dimensional BNNS, while utilizing BNNS to improve heat transfer performance. Experimental results show that 2 wt% XG effectively suppresses phase separation, 0.5 wt% Al 2 O 3 reduces the supercooling to 5.53 ℃, and BNNS further lowers the supercooling to 0.65 ℃ while increasing the thermal conductivity to 1.543 W·m − 1 ·K − 1 .Furthermore, after 100 thermal cycles, the composite exhibited good thermal energy retention capacity. This composite achieves a good overall balance between supercooling suppression, thermal energy storage density, and thermal conductivity, demonstrating application potential in the fields of low-to-medium-temperature thermal energy storage and thermal management.

Achieving high energy density and efficiency concurrently in BNNS/P(VDF-HFP) composites via synchronous heating and stirring treatment

Dengjie Luo,Wei Wang,Wuwei Feng,Shuo Liu,Bin He,Yuqin Liu

To meet the rising demand for energy storage, it is essential to achieve further improvements in the energy storage density and efficiency of composites based on dielectric polymers. Herein, Boron nitride nano sheets (BNNS) with high breakdown strength and high thermal conductivity was introduced into the matrix of polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene (P (VDF-HFP)). Via synchronous heating and stirring treatment, BNNS were well dispersed in P(VDF-HFP) with increased fluidity due to the rise of temperature. With the incorporation of 7 wt% BNNS, the composite achieved high energy storage density of 21 J/cm 3 at 492 MV/m and high efficiency of 80.2 % concurrently, outperforms most previous polymer-based composite dielectric energy storage materials. This is attributed to the fact that BNNS can induce the formation of P(VDF-HFP) crystalline phase , and the simultaneous heating process improves filler dispersion to extend the breakdown path and disperse electron heat accumulation.

Zhimin Wu,Jinchao Yang,Shuying Wu,Hongjun Zhu,Yue Luo,Liu Tan

BNNS/GO/PVA hybrid aerogel with 3D anisotropic network is fabricated by ice-templating. • HGBP/PW composite achieves 91.17% PW loading and 197.8 J/g melting enthalpy with 121.83% enthalpy efficiency. • Vertical thermal conductivity of HGBP5/PW is enhanced by 360% to 1.15 W/(m·K) vs pure PW. • HGBP5/PW realizes 97.80% photothermal conversion efficiency and 228.9 mV photo-thermal-electric output voltage. • HGBP/PW composite exhibits excellent shape stability and robust cycling durability with negligible leakage. Phase change materials (PCMs) are promising for solar thermal energy storage but suffer from leakage, low light absorption and thermal conductivity. Herein, a shape-stabilized composite PCM (HGBP/PW) was prepared by encapsulating paraffin wax (PW) into a BNNS/GO/PVA hybrid aerogel via ice-templating and vacuum impregnation. The 3D anisotropic network is constructed with GO as framework and photo-thermal absorber, BNNS for thermal conduction, and PVA as mechanical support. HGBP/PW exhibits 91.17% PW loading, a melting enthalpy of 197.8 J/g and 121.83% enthalpy efficiency. Its vertical thermal conductivity reaches 1.15 W/m·K, 360% higher than pure PW. It reduces LED chip temperature by 46.41%, shows 97.8% photo-thermal conversion efficiency and excellent cycling stability. Efficient solar-thermal-electric conversion is also achieved under simulated and natural sunlight, with a maximum output voltage of 228.9 mV and maintaining a reliable 118.2 mV output. This work offers a scalable strategy for multifunctional PCMs toward thermal management and efficient solar energy utilization.

Zhen Hong,Yun Xing,Mingshan Xue,Dan Yang,Xinyu Xia,Jingxiao Guo,Yidan Luo,Zuozhu Yin,Chan Xie

The development of polymer-based dielectric nanocomposites with superior dielectric properties, heat dissipation, and excellent thermal stability remains a significant challenge for advanced electronic and electrical systems. In this work, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) and MgAl layered double hydroxide nanosheets (MgAl LDHNS) were utilized as binary fillers and incorporated into polyetherimide (PEI) to fabricate BNNS-MgAl LDHNS/PEI nanocomposite films by ball milling dispersion and solution casting method. Owing to the exceptional synergistic effect of BNNS with high thermal conductivity and large diameter, combined with MgAl LDHNS with high dielectric constant and small diameter, the dielectric constant and thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite film were enhanced while maintaining low dielectric loss and high breakdown strength. For the BNNS-MgAl LDHNS/PEI nanocomposite films with filler loading of 12 wt%, the dielectric constant (6.47 at 100 Hz) increased by 73%, the in-plane thermal conductivity (6.932 W/m·K) and through-plane thermal conductivity (0.407 W/m·K) increased by 561% and 111%, respectively. And the breakdown strength of the nanocomposite film remains at 82.1 kV/mm. Simultaneously, the thermal stability and mechanical flexibility of the nanocomposite film were maintained. This work presents a promising PEI-based composite material and offers new insights into the role of two-dimensional binary fillers with varying sheet diameters in enhancing the properties of polymer-based composites. Highlights BNNS-MgAl LDHNS/PEI nanocomposite film was prepared. The nanocomposite film has high dielectric and thermal properties. The interfacial polarization synergistic enhanced by the 2D binary fillers. A high thermal conductivity path was formed between 2D binary fillers.

Synergistic enhancement of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties in BNNS/Al2O3/epoxy composites via amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer-assisted interfacial engineering

Xubin Wang,Jiabao Lin,Hongbowen Cui,Wenju Wu,Changhai Zhang,Tiandong Zhang,Chao Yin,Chao Tang,Ling Weng,Qingguo Chi

Epoxy resin is widely used in electronic packaging and electrical insulation due to its excellent electrical insulation, dimensional stability, and processability. However, its application in high-power devices is limited by its intrinsically low thermal conductivity, high brittleness, and severe interfacial defects at high filler loadings. In this study, an amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (AHAA) was first synthesized and introduced into an E51/methyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride epoxy curing system, and the matrix network structure was optimized by adjusting the AHAA content. The results showed that the system modified with 9 wt% AHAA (A9EP) exhibited the best overall mechanical properties and could therefore be used as the matrix for subsequent thermally conductive and electrically insulating composites. Furthermore, BNNS/Al 2 O 3 hybrid fillers were subjected to three-step interfacial grafting using tannic acid (TA), KH560, and AHAA to construct an AHAA-KH560-TA multilevel organic interfacial layer, and were compared with unmodified BNNS/Al 2 O 3 fillers. The multilevel interfacial modification significantly improved the dispersion of the fillers in the A9EP matrix and the interfacial bonding, thereby alleviating stress concentration and electric field distortion caused by high filler loading. The results showed that the tensile strength and flexural strength of FBA20/A9EP were 40.4 MPa and 100.97 MPa, respectively, with the breakdown strength of 92.12 kV/mm and the thermal conductivity of 0.607 W m −1  K −1 . This study indicates that the combination of AHAA-induced matrix regulation and overall TA/KH560/AHAA stepwise interfacial modification provides a feasible strategy for improving the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of epoxy composites.

One-step exfoliation and deprotonation of ANF/BNNS suspension for constructing 3D vertically aligned skeleton in epoxy-based thermal management composites

Han GaoJie,Xue PeiWen,Cai ZhengHao,Feng YueZhan,Liu ChunTai,Shen ChangYu

Two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS) is promising in polymer-based thermal management materials (TMMs) by pre-constructing three-dimensional (3D) thermally conductive skeleton, but it yet suffers from the challenges of high-effective exfoliation and affinitive compatibility with matrix. In this work, we developed a one-step exfoliation and deprotonation approach by the high-effective ball milling technique to prepare aramid nanofiber (ANF)/BNNS suspension. Under the strong collision/shear effect of ball-milling, micron-level hBN sheets were exfoliated into smaller and thinner BNNS with edge functional groups, meanwhile, poly-p-phenylene terephthalamide (PPTA) fibers were split into ANF by dissociating the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. More importantly, both the exfoliation and deprotonation could be accelerated by each other to achieve a 100% yield of ANF/BNNS suspension with strong hydrogen/covalent bonding interactions between them. Subsequently, the prepared ANF/BNNS suspension was used to construct 3D vertically aligned ANF/BNNS skeleton by the unidirectional freezing method. The obtained epoxy-based composite (EP/ANF/BNNS) revealed excellent thermal conductivity of 2.41 Wm −1 K −1 at 14.9 vol% BNNS loading due to the vertically oriented heat conduction paths and low interfacial thermal resistance in the skeleton. Moreover, EP/ANF/BNNS composite showed high thermal stability and extraordinary fire retardancy with dramatically decreased heat release rate (265 W g −1 ) and total heat release (20.6 kJ g −1 ). Therefore, this work demonstrates a high-efficient one-step ball-milling exfoliation and deprotonation technique for preparing ANF/BNNS suspension, which reveals an enormous potential in preparing advanced TMMs by constructing 3D thermally conductive skeletons.

Simultaneous improvement in thermal conductivity and flame retardancy of epoxy resin via constructing 3D BNNS skeleton with assistance of ammonium polyphosphate

Peiwen Xue,Yajie Cheng,Yong Wang,Gaojie Han,Bing Zhou,Chengen He,Chuntai Liu,Yuezhan Feng

Three-dimensional (3D) boron nitride skeleton has a promising prospect in improving the thermal conductivity and flame retardancy of polymer composites, yet the problems of interface thermal resistance and combustion collapse in the skeleton caused by organic adhesives still need to be solved. In this work, macromolecular flame retardancy, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with high polymerization degree, was firstly used to modify and assemble boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) into 3D thermally conductive skeleton, in which APP with rich amino groups can result in the strong grafting modification to reduce the interfacial thermal resistance in BNNS skeleton, meanwhile, the catalytic carbonization of APP can reinforce the 3D skeleton barrier without collapse during combustion. Typically, one-step wet ball-milling with assisted APP was used to exfoliate and modify BNNS, followed by unidirectional freezing to achieve 3D BNNS@APP skeleton with highly oriented structure. As expected, the constructing 3D skeleton with low interfacial thermal resistance can effectively form a heat transfer path in polymer matrix. The obtained epoxy-based composite showed a high thermal conductivity of 3.28 W/mK at 9.28 vol% BNNS@APP. Meanwhile, the producing 3D skeleton barrier during combustion induced the significant improvement in flame retardancy, with heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) decreasing by 68.3% and 52.7%, respectively. This work provides a new adhesive choice in constructing 3D thermal conductive and flame retardant skeleton, which exhibits high potential in thermal management application.

Significantly enhanced breakdown strength and energy density performances of methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate nanocomposites filled with BNNs@PDA-Ag hybrid structures

Junhao Xie,Hongxu Liu,Shulin Sun

Electronic capacitor films based on polymer matrices and inorganic nanofillers capable of storing more energy play a crucial role in advanced modern electrical industries and devices. Herein, a series of nanocomposite films composed of “core–shell–dot” BNNs-PDA@Ag hybrid structures with multiple breakdown strength enhancement mechanisms as fillers and methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate (MG) copolymers as matrices were successfully synthesized. The introduced 2D and wide-bandgap BNNs not only enhanced the breakdown strength by taking advantage of their excellent physical properties, but also further improved their energy storage properties both at ambient and elevated temperatures through the formation of deeper traps at the organic–inorganic interface. In addition, especially under a strong electric field, the Coulomb-blockade effects of Ag nanoparticles immobilized by a PDA shell layer in the heterostructure of BN nanosheets avoided the breakdown. Ultimately, the energy density of 2.0 BNNs@PDA-Ag nanocomposite films was 9.35 J cm−3 at 640 MV m−1 and room temperature with considerable efficiency (86%) under multiple breakdown strength enhancement mechanisms. Even at 90 °C and 120 °C, it still maintained energy densities of 5.46 J cm−3 and 4.32 J cm−3 with efficiencies of 84.79% and 76.81% under 460 MV m−1 and 380 MV m−1, respectively.

Surface modification of BNNS bridged by graphene oxide and Ag nanoparticles: A strategy to get balance between thermal conductivity and mechanical property

Hao Yuan,Ting Li,Yang Wang,Xiaofan Wang,Xuhui Zhang,Bihua Xia,Piming Ma,Tianxi Liu,Mingqing Chen,Weifu Dong

Thermal conductive polymeric composites are becoming more and more important in the rapid development of new generation electronic equipment, which can quickly dissipate the heat generated by the equipment to ensure their stable operation with high reliability. Nowadays, the most effective way to prepare thermal conductive polymeric composites is to incorporate efficient thermal conductive fillers into polymers. However, the large thermal resistance at interfaces and degradation of mechanical properties arising from the large filler content restrict their practical applications. Herein, surface modification of BNNS by polydopamine (PDA) was carried out to improve the interfacial compatibility and interaction between fillers and polymer matrix , a simple doctor blading method was adopted to prepare PVA composite films with an aligned structure. In addition, the decoration of silver nanoparticles on BNNS surface and the addition of small amount of GO can help to promote the continuity and reduce the defect of the filler skeleton. Thus, an increase in thermal conductivity (in-plane: 6.54 W m −1  K −1 , through-plane: 1.03 W m −1  K −1 ) was observed in PVA/BNNS-PDA-Ag (10 wt%)/GO (0.5 wt%) composite film, which also possessed excellent flexibility and a favorable mechanical property of 97.1 ± 5.1 MPa.

Construction and verification of a heat transfer-combustion model for EP/BNNS composite material based on analysis of the char layer dynamic evolution

Junyu Lin,Jie Yu,Xiaotong Tian,Zheng Wang,Dan Meng,Yapeng Wang,Changwei Xu,Feng Zhang

A stratified char structure with porous upper and dense bottom layers was established. • A heat transfer–combustion model considering char layer stratified structure was developed. • Porosity-dependent thermophysical properties were incorporated into heat transfer modeling. • The model accurately predicted temperature, mass loss and heat release behavior. • The proposed model provides a practical tool for thermal engineering design of flame-retardant polymer components. Accurately describing the char layer dynamic evolution is a key step to further understand the flame retardancy mechanism of charring flame-retardant polymer material. Epoxy resin (EP) and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) was used to prepare EP/BNNS composite materials. An in-depth investigation was conducted on char layer dynamic evolution of EP/BNNS composites during burning by macroscopic observation and microscopic characterization such as using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) techniques, where the char layer was obtained from different combustion phases. An interesting phenomenon was observed that a porous upper part and a dense bottom part of the char layer structure was formed gradually in the char layer dynamic evolution process. Accordingly, a stratified structure char layer model with porous in the upper part and dense in the bottom part was developed and porosity was tested for each part. Subsequently, a heat transfer-combustion physical and mathematical model of EP/BNNS composites was established, which considered the proposed stratified structure char layer model. The simulation results showed that the root mean square errors of the temperature field, mass loss rate, and heat release rate were 46.76 °C, 0.23 mg·cm −2 ·s −1 , and 95.48 kW·m −2 , and the simulation results had a high degree of agreement with the experiment results.

High-performance anti-corrosion polybenzoxazine nanocomposite coatings containing functional SiO2-BNNS nano-hybrid fillers based on double-layer structure: Design, preparation and performance

Ai Ping Zhang,Shang Ke Yang,De Li,Hai Lan Lin,Wei Ran Li,Peng Chen,Tong Li,Jun Bian,Dai Qiang Chen

To fabricate high-performance anti-corrosion double-layer structure polybenzoxazine (PBZ) nanocomposite coating, herein, the main-chain benzoxazine (BA-ddm) and diamine benzoxazine (Ph-hda) were first synthesized and then compounded to produce PBZ copolymer matrix (PB5). Simultaneously, NH 2 -BNNS and Epoxy-SiO 2 were obtained through the surface decoration by APTS and GPTS to the surfaces of BNNS and SiO 2 , respectively. Then, a series of nano-hybrid fillers (SiO 2 -BNNS) were prepared by hybridizing NH 2 -BNNS and Epoxy-SiO 2 at various mass ratios, and finally incorporated into the PBZ matrix to investigate the optimal hybridization ratios and the optimal addition contents of the nano-hybrid fillers. The results showed that the addition of SiO 2 -BNNS (with mass ration of 1:2) nano-hybrid filler into PBZ matrix significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of the PBZ nanocomposite coating. When the SiO 2 -BNNS(1:2) content reached 3 wt%, the |Z| 0.01 Hz value of the PBZ nanocomposite coating reached 1.06 × 10 11 Ω·cm 2 . To further improve the comprehensive properties of the PBZ coating, a double-layer structure PBZ nanocomposite coating was fabricated through a layer-by-layer coating and layer-by-layer curing approach. The bottom layer consisted of a 3 % SiO 2 -BNNS(1:2)/PBZ coating, while the top layer was composed of a SiO 2 -BNNS(1:2) nano-hybrid particle layer. The results indicated that when the number of top SiO 2 -BNNS(1:2) layers was 4, the water contact angle (WCA) of the coating increased to 126.9°, the thermal decomposition temperature ( T d ) reached 446.8 °C, and the impedance modulus increased to 1.43 × 10 11 Ω·cm 2 . Compared with the 3 % SiO 2 -BNNS(1:2)/PBZ coating, the double-layer structure PBZ nanocomposite coating exhibited excellent hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance.
