Facile fabrication of ion-imprinted Fe3O4/carboxymethyl cellulose magnetic biosorbent: removal and recovery properties for trivalent La ions

Long Liu,Sheng Chang,Yan Wang,Hexiang Zhao,Shuteng Wang,Chengfeng Zheng,Yingying Ding,Shixue Ren,Jiguo Zhang,Yuan-Ru Guo

An Fe3O4/carboxymethyl cellulose (Fe3O4/CMC) magnetic biosorbent was prepared using the ion-imprinting technology, where La(III) was used as the template ion. The morphology and structure of Fe3O4/CMC were characterized by SEM, FTIR and XRD. It is found that nano Fe3O4 with inverse spinel structure can distribute in CMC and endow the composite with good magnetic properties. The adsorption performance such as adsorption capacity, influence of pH and initial concentration were fully explored. The prepared Fe3O4/CMC is revealed to have good adsorption properties with Qmax of 61.5 mg g−1, in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. When handling the multi-ion coexistence solution of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Cd(II), Fe3O4/CMC shows high selective adsorption for La(III). Meanwhile, cycling experiments find that the adsorption capacity is only slightly reduced (less than 5%) after 5-time reuse. Good adsorption properties, high selectivity and easy recovery give the newly-synthesized Fe3O4/CMC biosorbent broad application potential in the treatment of La(III)-containing wastewater.

Continuous Degradation of Formaldehyde by Using NaClO2-SA/CMC-Na Composite Microcapsules

Xinyue Zhang,Qiurong Chen,Yan Luo

Graphical In order to improve the stability and controlled release properties, NaClO 2 is microencapsulated based on emulsion crosslinking method adopting high biocompatibility sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) as shell material. The resulted sample is featured with selectivity and no secondary pollution, and brings about continuous degrading both liquid and gaseous formaldehyde. Sodium chlorite (NaClO 2 ) is a new type of air disinfectant, which can oxidize formaldehyde into carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on account of releasing chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) gas under acidic condition. Unfortunately, NaClO 2 is prone to moisture absorption and decomposition when exposed to air. In this paper, NaClO 2 was microencapsulated based on emulsion crosslinking method for improving its stability and controlled release properties. Due to their high biocompatibility, sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) were selected as the wall material to prepare NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules. The results showed that mean particle size of NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules was about 225 nm, and their encapsulation ratio was up to 73.18%. In addition, the thermal stability and environmental tolerance of NaClO 2 are improved greatly through microencapsulating. It was proved by formaldehyde degradation testing that the efficiency of formaldehyde degradation using resulted samples can continue to increase after seven days in pH 6.5 environment, indicating their good controlled-release performance. Moreover, degradation efficiency on 30 µg/mL formaldehyde solution using the resulted microcapsules is up to 97.08%. Meanwhile, after 20 repetition degradation, NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules can still continuously degrade formaldehyde gas. Therefore, NaClO 2 -SA/CMC-Na composite microcapsules reveal good stability and prolonged action on formaldehyde degradation.

Janus CMC-based hydrogel with multifunctional synergy for hemostasis and wound healing

Xiao Long,Cai Long,Xue Yu,Yilin Dong,Ziqi Liu,Ke Liu,Xinlei Lu,Jialin Yang,Yongquan Qing,Yunli Zhao,Miao Yu

Timely hemostasis, bacterial inhibition, and accelerated tissue regeneration are core demands for clinical wound care. However, integrating robust wet adhesion and surface antifouling performance simultaneously remains a key bottleneck limiting conventional wound dressings. Herein, a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based drug-loaded hydrogel (DLCH) co-embedded with polyhexamethylene biguanide-loaded zeolite (PHMB@Zeo) and gelatin-dopamine-stabilized silver nanoparticles (Gel-DA-AgNPs) was rationally developed as the bottom functional therapeutic layer. Further, an asymmetric Janus drug-loaded hydrogel (JDLH) was fabricated by modifying DLCH surface with a hydrophobic HMDSO-TiO₂ antifouling coating. As the functional core, DLCH exhibits 45 kPa wet adhesion, 1353% stretchability, and sustained PHMB release over 240 h, achieving > 99% antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Benefiting from DLCH's intrinsic superior properties, the resulting JDLH achieves rapid hemostasis at 41.33 ± 7.97 s and 46.33 ± 9.79 s in rat liver and heart non-compressible hemorrhage models, respectively. In vivo assays verify that JDLH accelerates full-thickness skin wound repair, reaching a 99.5% closure ratio on day 15 with boosted collagen deposition and angiogenesis. This work presents a portable Janus dressing with asymmetric adhesion, offering a practical advance for polysaccharide-based wound dressings and a promising candidate for emergency trauma and clinical wound care.

Ruilong Zhang,Zhiping Zhou,Atian Xie,Jiangdong Dai,Jiuyun Cui,Jihui Lang,Maobin Wei,Xiaohui Dai,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

The wide applications of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicines have attracted ever-increasing attention due to their potential adverse effects for ecological environment, therefore, it is urgent and important to efficiently remove antibiotics from water. In this paper, we prepared hierarchical porous carbons from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCHPCs) via halloysite template and KOH-activation method for efficient removal of chloramphenicol. The physicochemical properties of CMCHPCs are analyzed by means of different characterizations. The adsorption properties of CMCHPCs are evaluated by equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic adsorption experiments. In addition, the effects of ionic strength, solution pH, and humic acid on adsorption are studied. The results indicated CMCHPCs exhibit higher maximum monolayer adsorption capacity up to 769.95 mg/g and shows good regenerability and adaptability. Importantly, the adsorption mechanisms of chloramphenicol adsorbed onto the CMCHPCs are also discussed.

Aggregation Behaviors of Dodecyl Sulfate-Based Anionic Surface Active Ionic Liquids in Water

Jingjing Jiao,Bin Dong,Huina Zhang,Yingyuan Zhao,Xiaoqing Wang,Rui Wang,Li Yu

Halogen-free, low-cost alkyl sulfate-based surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([C4mim][C12SO4]), and N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium dodecyl sulfate ([C4MP][C12SO4]) were easily synthesized through ion exchange reaction. The aggregation behaviors of [C4mim][C12SO4] and [C4MP][C12SO4] in aqueous solution were investigated by surface tension, electric conductivity, and static fluorescence quenching. Both [C4mim][C12SO4] and [C4MP][C12SO4] have rather lower cmc, γcmc values and higher pC20, πcmc values than those reported for the traditional ionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and imidazolium-based SAIL, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C12mim]Br), with the same hydrocarbon chain length. The thermodynamic parameters evaluated from electric conductivity measurements show that the micelle formation of [C4mim][C12SO4] and [C4MP][C12SO4] is entropy-driven in the temperature range investigated. Lower average aggregation number indicates that the micelles of two SAILs present much looser structure. It is found that both the nature and the ring type of counterions can affect the aggregation behavior in aqueous solution. 1H NMR results of [C4mim][C12SO4] were used to further verify the mechanism of micelle formation. Hydration ability and steric hindrance of the imidazolium or pyrrolidinium counterion as well as the cooperative hydrophobic interaction of longer alkyl chain of [C12SO4] anion and comparatively shorter alkyl chain of [C4mim] or [C4MP] cation are proposed to play critical roles in the aggregation of [C4mim][C12SO4] and [C4MP][C12SO4].

High-strength and tough composite hydrogels reinforced by the synergistic effect of nano-doping and triple-network structures

Jing-Hui Wang,Ya-Nan Xue,Yan-Qin Wang,Mei-Wen An,Yi-Xian Qin,Wei-Yi Chen

Developing composite hydrogels with superior compressive mechanical performances attracted wide attention in recent years. In this work, a novel designing strategy was proposed to prepare a GOs/Fe 3+ -CMC/PVA triple-network (TN) hydrogel by a simple three-step procedure, including chemical polymerization, metal ionic coordination, and repeated freezing/thawing cyclic. The microstructures, functional groups, and elements distribution of the composite hydrogels were characterized by High resolution scanning electron microscope (HRSEM), Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) and Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, respectively. Furthermore, the compressive mechanical properties of the hydrogels with different mass ratios of GOs/PVA (0.4% ~2.0%), CMC/PVA (0.04~0.20), and freezing/thawing cyclic numbers (0, 5, & 9 times) were evaluated, respectively. The synthetic TN composite hydrogels with optimized compositions exhibited excellent mechanical strength (5.366 ± 0.58 MPa) and toughness (617.4 ± 39 kJ/m 3 ). Besides, the as-prepared composite hydrogels owned rapid recovery and fatigue resistance abilities. More importantly, it has analyzed the specific toughening role of each network during the energy dissipation process. The designing strategy may provide a new idea for developing high-strength and tough TN hydrogels and understanding their toughening mechanisms.

Efficient energy harvesting: High power wearable humidity generators with PAM-LiCl/CMC structure

Furong Cao,Jingchang Sun,Siwen Liu,Huiying Cheng,Zijiang Yang,Liuting Shan,Zhan Wang,Qiuju Feng,Jiming Bian,Junfeng Gao

Moisture electricity generator (MEG) has gained increasing interest due to its tremendous potential applications in generating electricity from sustainable ambient moisture. However, the development of MEG for self-powered electronics is seriously hindered by the low power density of individual MEG devices. Moreover, it is highly desirable to explore the potential of MEG in wearable applications. To significantly enhance the output performance of wearable MEGs, an ionic hydrogel moisture electricity generator (IH-MEG) featuring a PAM-LiCl/CMC structure was fabricated, demonstrating an excellent combination of flexibility and high-power density. The moisture energy is produced from the phase transition of water between its gaseous state and its adsorbed state, which exhibit different enthalpy and entropy. A significant number of ions are generated upon water absorption, and the three-dimensional pore structure facilitates the rapid transport of these ions within the IH-MEG, effectively converting the chemical energy stored in the IH-MEG into electrical energy. Under normal conditions (20°C and 90 % relative humidity), the maximum output power density from an individual IH-MEG can reach as high as 113 μW·cm⁻², with an open-circuit voltage of 1.8 V and a short-circuit current of 1.2 mA, nearly doubling the previously reported values. Moreover, our IH-MEG can collect mechanical energy when pressure is applied to the device. Our achievements provide profound insights into enhancing the output performance of sustainable MEGs through the rational utilization of ion hydrogels via a simple fabrication process.

In Situ SiC Nanowire Bridging Enables Structural Reconstruction of Macropore Defects in CMC

Le Lu,Zhiyuan Ma,Zhaofeng Chen,Lixia Yang,Yue Wang,Yaotong Song,Yingdong Song,Xiguang Gao

SiC f /SiC has shown great potential for high-temperature structural applications such as aero-engine components, but repeated precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) often leave large interconnected macropores due to precursor loss and fiber architecture constraints. These defects promote stress concentration and oxidation, degrading structural reliability. To address this, SiC nanowires (SiCnws) were in situ introduced into difficult-to-fill macropores, forming a three-dimensional bridging network. The observed nanowire morphology was consistent with a catalyst-assisted vapor-liquid-solid-type growth process, and the morphology and distribution of SiCnws were regulated by varying the ferrocene/PCS/xylene ratio. The resulting interconnected network enhanced load transfer and inhibited crack propagation through bridging and deflection. Consequently, porosity decreased from 26.9% to 12.9%, density increased from 2.137 to 2.429 g/cm 3 , and fracture behavior shifted from brittle to pseudo-plastic. This approach offers an effective strategy for repairing structural defects in ceramic matrix composites.

Hofmeister Effect-Regulated Lightweight and High-Strength PVA/CMC Hydrogel for Durable Sensing

Xueyan Wang,Xiaosong Du,Jupeng Guo,Guo Li,Peiyu Jia,Yin Long,Zhiyi Zhang,Huiling Tai,Yadong Jiang

Traditional conductive hydrogels suffer from intrinsic mechanical brittleness (typically <1 MPa) and insufficient fatigue resistance, making them prone to structural failure during dynamic wearable applications and long-term use, which inevitably leads to signal drift. Herein, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used as the matrix; sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) constructed a flexible double-network framework; tannic acid (TA) enabled energy dissipation via dynamic hydrogen bonding; and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) triggered Hofmeister effect-driven crystallization, thereby yielding an ultratough and fatigue-resistant conductive hydrogel. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, the hydrogel achieved integrated mechanical-electrical performance. After the optimized 16 h Na2SO4 treatment, it exhibited an ultralow density of 0.962 g/cm3, a tensile strength of 10.05 MPa (40 × conventional PVA), a toughness of 18.92 MJ/m3, and an ionic conductivity of 3.97 S/m (34.5 × conventional PVA). The fabricated sensor showed excellent fatigue-resistant sensing performance, maintaining >91% signal retention after 5000 stretching cycles at 100% strain, with a rapid response time of 167 ± 9 ms, enabling high-fidelity monitoring of joint motions and physiological pulses. When integrated with machine learning, the system enabled Morse-code communication and achieved a gesture-recognition accuracy exceeding 93%. This study provides a simple and feasible strategy for constructing ultratough, fatigue-resistant conductive hydrogels for next-generation durable bioelectronic devices.

Molecularly engineered CMC-caged PNIPAM for broadband light management in energy-saving window

Yang Liu,Qunfeng Chen,Gengmei Liu,Tao Tao,Haodong Sun,Zhenhui Lin,Lihui Chen,Qingxian Miao,Jianguo Li

Dynamic transparent-opaque transition behavior endows the stimuli-chromic materials with the solar modulation capability. However, these materials commonly involve the high manufacturing cost and complexity, the additional consumption of electric energy for solar modulation, or the weak effectiveness of light management. Herein, we develop a low-cost yet broadband light management sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-caging-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) thermochromic composite (i.e., CMC/PNIPAM), where the nanoscale-skeleton CMC molecules well cage the PNIPAM molecules, which enables the homogeneous dispersion and sufficient distribution of the PNIPAM nanogels in the system. The CMC/PNIPAM features the excellent solar-modulation capability (including optical transmittance modulation of 68.17% and infrared transmittance modulation of 48.50%) and a low phase temperature of 30 °C, as well as the long-term stability of dynamic transparent-opaque transition. Such merits of the broadband light management, low cost, simply fabrication as well as scaling up, make the CMC/PNIPAM function as a promising candidate for the energy-saving buildings and construction.

Preparation and Properties of Highly Electroconductive and Heat-Resistant CMC/Buckypaper/Epoxy Nanocomposites

Ting Zheng,Guanhui Wang,Nuo Xu,Chunrui Lu,Yingjie Qiao,Dongxing Zhang,Xiaodong Wang

Self-assembled buckypapers have been successfully prepared using sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) as a binder. The lowest resistivity that was reached was 0.43 ± 0.03 Ω·m, when the buckypapers were prepared by the same mass of CMC and carboxy-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A heat-resistant electroconductive nanocomposite with epoxy resin as the matrix and CMC/buckypapers as the reinforcement was fabricated by a resin impregnation molding technique. The effects of CMC/buckypaper layers on the conductivity, thermal stability, and mechanical and dynamic mechanical performance of the epoxy resin polymer nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that CMC/buckypapers hold great promise for improving the properties of nanocomposites, and the buckypapers’ performance can be enhanced by using modified CNTs to prepare them. The obtained nanocomposites showed an approximate 71.23% bending strength improvement (125.04 ± 5.62 MPa) and a 30.71% bending modulus improvement (5.83 ± 0.68 GPa), with an increased number of CMC/buckypaper layers. An enhanced degradation temperature and residual mass were also achieved for the nanocomposites when compared with a pure polymer. The nanocomposites with four CMC/buckypaper layers possessed the highest storage modulus (1934 MPa), which was approximately 60% higher than that of a neat polymer (1185 MPa). Therefore, CMC/buckypapers could be effectively used to manufacture heat-resistant electroconductive polymer nanocomposites with improved properties. Keywords:cellulose;buckypapers;nanocomposites;electrical properties;mechanical properties;high-temperature properties
