The graphene oxide-cellulose nanocrystal (GO-CNC) composites were facilely synthesized and used as a novel hydrophilic additive to blend into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) microporous membrane aiming at improving the antifouling performance of the resultant GO-CNC/PVDF membrane in MBR. The physicochemical properties of the GO-CNC composite and its functionalized PVDF membrane were investigated in detail by SEM-EDX, FTIR, XRD, water contact angle, zeta potential, permeability and fouling analysis. Results revealed that the hydrophilic GO-CNC composite functionalized PVDF microfiltration membrane exhibited higher wettability, lower protein and polysaccharides adsorption, and higher permeability compared to CNC/PVDF and previously reported GO/PVDF membranes. During long-term operation in MBR, the GO-CNC/PVDF membrane displayed superior antifouling performances with characteristic of less EPS accumulation, higher flux recovery ratio, lower irreversible fouling level and longer cleaning cycle, due to higher hydrophilicity and porosity as well as more negative zeta potential in comparison with the pristine PVDF and CNC/PVDF membranes. It can be expected that as a novel hydrophilic and antifouling additive, GO-CNC composite functionalized membranes would receive more extensive applications in MBR system for wastewater treatment and water reclamation.

The increasing demand for lithium resources highlights the need for nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high permeability and selectivity for processing salt-lake brines. In this study, an ultrathin Janus NF membrane featuring Li + -selective nanochannels was fabricated via interfacial polymerization for Li + /Mg 2+ separation. Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-COOH) were deposited onto a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate to form an interlayer, and 15-crown-5 (15-C-5) was incorporated into the polyamide (PA) layer, yielding the PVDF/CCNC-15C5-PA membrane. The CNC-COOH interlayer increased membrane hydrophilicity and surface negative charge, and synergistically interacted with 15-C-5 to enhance the interaction with polyethyleneimine, resulting in a thin, defect-free PA layer of approximately 63 nm. Meanwhile, 15-C-5 formed host–guest complexes with Li + , establishing Li + -selective nanochannels that promoted Li + transport. The combined modifications yielded a PVDF/CCNC-15C5-PA membrane with a water permeance of 15.4 L·m -2 ·h -1 ·bar -1 and a Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 17.8. This work presents a dual-functional design strategy that integrates interfacial engineering with molecular recognition for advanced ion-selective separation.

Solar-enabled thermal regulation is important for agricultural protection applications, yet it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve mechanical robustness, environmental stability, and degradability in biodegradable polymers. Here, a novel bioinspired brick-mortar-reinforcement architecture was designed to construct a multifunctional PLA-based film. In this design, the PLA matrix serves as the load-bearing 'bricks', the polydopamine-calcium carbonate stabilized enzymes act as the functional 'mortar', and the hydrophobically modified cellulose nanocrystals (DPC) function as the 'reinforcing bars', collectively forming a hierarchically integrated structure. Benefiting from this multiscale architecture, PCPM7% exhibits significantly enhanced mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 32.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 186.9%. The engineered structure also imparts excellent UV shielding (UPF 2000), improved hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 101.2°), and effective solar-to-thermal conversion, enabling stable heat retention under fluctuating environments. The embedded enzyme system enables stage-dependent biodegradation after service, achieving a mass loss of 78.3% within 180 days. This work provides a comparative design strategy for developing high-performance photothermal agricultural films.

Due to their unique physicochemical properties, carbon nanochips (CNCs) have been used for studies of the direct electrochemical and electrocatalytic properties of oxidoreductase. In this report, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with CNCs, and glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on the modified electrode surface. Chitosan (CS) was employed to fix the GOx/CNCs tightly to the surface of the GCE. Characterization of the modified electrode by SEM, TEM, and FT-IR showed that GOx remained in its native structure when immobilized in CNC film. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and linear sweep voltammetry studies showed that direct electrochemical and bioelectrocatalytic activities of GOx were achieved and that the presence of CNCs enhanced the electrochemical response of GOx. Glucose had a linear current response from 0 to 1.9 mM, with a detection limit of 0.16 mM and an apparent Michaelis–Menten constant of 0.15 mM. The polarization curve of the biofuel cell revealed that the bioanode afforded an open circuit voltage of 0.59 V, maximum power density of 55 μW cm−2, and maximum current density of 434 μA cm−2. These results establish that the direct immobilization of protein onto the CNC surface can be used to achieve direct electron transfer of other redox enzymes. Furthermore, the findings provide a new perspective toward understanding the kinetics and thermodynamics of biological redox processes.

Natural polysaccharide-based film suffers lower strength which will further decrease by adding essential oil to endow antibacterial activity. Herein, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) prepared from Pinus Knraiensis Nut skin (PKNS) was incorporated in gum arabic (GA)/chitosan (CS) composite film. PKNS CNC exhibited needle-like shape and higher stability due to zeta potential of lower than −30 mV. After it was added into GA/CS film, the biocompatibility among them was better and the strength, barrier to moisture and hydrophobicity of GA/CS film were improved. Ocimum gratissimum L. essential oil (OGEO) was blended in GA/CS/CNC film to access obvious antibacterial property against E. coli , Salmonella and S. aureus . Compared to Yanbian cattle beef without package and packed with GA/CS and GA/CS/CNC, that packaged by the antibacterial composite film showed the best quality recognized by the redder color, slowest improved pH value, lowest content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N).

Hypothesis We synthesized composite microspheres from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium alginate (SA), which were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to introduce a high density of active amino sites onto the surface via the Schiff base reaction. We hypothesized that these (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI microspheres would have a high adsorption capacity for aqueous diclofenac sodium (DS). Experiments The PEI-modified composite microspheres were characterized and assessed and optimized for aqueous DS adsorption. In addition, the morphology and synthesis mechanism of the adsorbent were studied. Findings The adsorption process showed a good fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (i.e., the process is driven by a chemical adsorption mechanism) and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (i.e., adsorption follows a single-layer process). Under the optimum experimental conditions (pH: 4.5, adsorption time: 50 min, temperature: 303 K), the maximum adsorption capacity was 418.4104 mg/g, which was relatively high compared to other reported adsorbents. Importantly, after five adsorption–desorption cycles, (SA/CNC/PVA)@PEI showed only a slight loss in adsorption capacity. Compared with other reported adsorbents, the core–shell composite has a good DS adsorptive capacity and high recyclability.

The tunable, controllable dual-optical materials combined vivid structural color with conspicuous fluorescence have received widespread interest for coping the rising challenges of information leakage and counterfeiting. Sodium dodecyl sulfate is beneficial to break up the agglomerates and reduce electric potential of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), forming a homogeneously iridescent film. Thereby, through facile co-assembly strategy that is notably suitable for large-scale industrial production, we develop a novel, rewritable, flexible CNC composite film with outstanding capability for optical information storage and encryption due to its highly homogeneous structure color and controllable time-dependent fluorescence that can be repeatedly activated/quenched. This film can be directly written on and erased repeatedly without damage, and the written content will spontaneously fade over time. Furthermore, the introduction of superhydrophilic photosensitive ionic liquid enables the prepared film to overcome the deformation induced by inhomogeneous swelling during writing. Under the disguise of dazzling iridescent appearance, the reversible photoinduced dimerization and controllable fluorescence stemmed from coumarin-based molecules allow the encoding of a hidden pattern containing ciphertext on the CNC composite film, offering a promising capability of information storage and encryption. This dual-optical film based on renewable bionanomaterials paves the way for the design and improvement of sustainable functional information materials.

The incorporation of porous supporting materials to prepare shape-stable phase change materials (PCMs) is of great interest in recent years. However, extensive reported composite PCMs are shape-stable in the air atmosphere but neglected in the water environment. To develop shape-stable and waterproof PCMs is important for their outdoor applications but challenging. Herein, we report a novel cellulose nanocrystal/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (CNC/PNIPAM) gel-supported hexadecanol (H-anol) PCM with good thermal storage properties and excellent shape stability in both air and water environments. The CNC/PNIPAM hydrogel is prepared through an ultraviolet-induced C═C cross-linking reaction, and its physical structure and mechanical properties are well characterized. H-anol is then directly immerged into the CNC/PNIPAM alcogel by a facile and low-cost solvent-exchange strategy. The mechanism of the solvent-exchange strategy has been established. Because of the temperature-sensitive hydrophilic/hydrophobic transform behavior of the CNC/PNIPAM network, the CNC/PNIPAM/H-anol PCM displays excellent shape stability in a water environment by forming a dense hydrophobic surface, providing it with great potential in all-weather thermal energy storage applications.

Self-powered piezoelectric sensors based on cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) porous materials are light-weight and portable, whereas using unmodified CNCs can hardly obtain enough piezoelectric properties without external strong polarization due to its irreversible deformation caused by low toughness. Here, we bonded rod-like CNCs with a soft polymer, poly ethylene glycol (PEG), and hypothesized that PEG could toughen the material and its dielectric signal could induce the CNC polarization. We further adsorbed graphene (GR) as surface electrodes to prepare a CNC-PEG-GR piezoelectric porous material with density of 0.096 g·cm −3 . The voltage output reached maximum when the frequency matched the dielectric relaxation frequency of PEG. We also increased the length-diameter ratio of porous material pores from 1.1 to 3.3 by adjusting its freeze-drying process, and the voltage output could reach to 0.7 V at a moderate ratio. They could be conveniently integrated into portable self-powered sensors applied to the intelligent wearable electronic devices.

Blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered as one of the most promising ways to produce fully biodegradable and renewable biopolymers. However, these composite biopolymers face challenges such as, poor mechanical performance, inferior water vapor and ultraviolet barrier resistance, and weak antibacterial property due to the incompatibility of hydrophilic TPS with hydrophobic PLA and PBAT. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were uniformly in-situ grown on cellulose nanocrystal to prepare a novel silver nanoparticles loaded-cellulose nanocrystal (Ag-CNC). Then, antimicrobial TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films with enhanced mechanical properties, superior water vapor barrier capacity and highly UV-shielding effect were fabricated by introducing Ag-CNC and oligo (lactic acid) grafting starch (OLA- g -ST, an eco-friendly compatibilizer) into TPS, PLA and PBAT matrix. As expected, the introduction of Ag-CNC significantly improved antibacterial property and UV-shielding effect (283 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Moreover, the incorporation of OLA- g -ST and Ag-CNC into the composites resulted in a notable enhancement of the mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 77.95 % and 63.23 %, respectively) and water vapor barrier capacity (40.8 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Hence, the innovative fully biodegradable composite films displayed remarkable potential in the field of renewable biopolymers as well as multifunctional packages.

Ionic skins are promising for flexible electronics and health monitoring due to their flexibility, potential for safe skin contact, and stimulus responsiveness. However, traditional hydrogel-based ionic skins suffer from poor environmental stability and limited functionality, restricting their long-term reliability. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of human skin, we report a biomimetic ionic skin with an ion-electron dual conductive network reinforced by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The material is fabricated via one-pot polymerization of lipoic acid, incorporating [Bmim]Cl ionic liquid, silver nanowires (AgNWs), and CNC. The resulting ionogel exhibits well-balanced properties: high stretchability (565%), adequate tensile strength (115 kPa), rapid self-healing (90% recovery after 12 h at 60 °C), and strong adhesion to various surfaces (930 J·m–2 on copper). The sensing mechanism relies on synergy between ionic conduction and contact-separation of the AgNW network, enabling high sensitivity (GF = 5.8), fast response (190 ms), broad strain range (0–565%), and excellent cycling stability. The sensor accurately monitors diverse human motions (from facial expressions to joint movements) and enables finger-controlled music software and real-time robotic hand manipulation. This work provides a new strategy for developing highly stable, multifunctional ionic skins.

The nanocellulose-stabilized aroma emulsions have the potential to replace surfactant-stabilized emulsions. However, the stability of aroma emulsions stabilized by nanocellulose still remains a challenging task. Herein, we developed a stable nanocellulose-stabilized aroma emulsion with controllable and antibacterial properties through cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 self-assembly at the oil-water interface. The stability, interfacial behavior, rheological and antibacterial properties of the emulsion were investigated. Our results reveal that the creaming index of the emulsions remained almost unchanged even after being stored for one week. The interfacial tension between the CNC aqueous phase and limonene decreased from 20.5 to 8.5 mN/m, as the addition of NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 (20 mg/mL). Notably, the interface tension (ranging from 3.5 to 11.1 mN/m) and the interfacial coverage rate of the CNC at the oil/water interface (ranging from 68.6 % to 97.5 %) could be tune by adjusting the pH value of the aqueous phase. The storage modulus and viscosity of the emulsions increased as the concentration of NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 increased. The aroma emulsion was highly stable under the conditions of 1.5 wt% CNC, 10 mg/mL NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 , the oil/water ratio of 1/9, and the aqueous phase pH of 3. Moreover, these emulsions exhibited significant resistance to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Overall, this research provides a method to prepare a stable nanocellulose-based aroma emulsion, which could extend the application area of aroma emulsion.
