Ultralight and Multifunctional CNT/CNF Aerogels with Excellent EMI Shielding and Photothermal Conversion Properties

Bincheng Huang,Qiang Fu,Yuxiao Wang,Yunchen Du,Xianjie Wang,Peng E

Modern communications infrastructure has given rise to significant levels of electromagnetic wave interference (EMI), leading to increased requirements for the preparation of multifunctional EMI shielding composites. Ti3C2TX aerogels are well-studied materials to achieve this, with the abundant functional groups of hydroxylated nanocellulose able to achieve sufficient electromagnetic wave attenuation. This article reports that samples of NC/35C/25M6 achieved an EMI SE of 30.3 dB and an SSE/t of 2346 dB cm2g−1 using 1.15 g of conductive fillers with a density of only 0.06 g/cm3. In addition, the photothermal conversion properties of this material contribute to efficient energy utilization, demonstrating the multiple functionality of Ti3C2TX aerogels. Therefore, these ultralight, low-cost and multifunctional aerogels meet the requirements of EMI shielding and photothermal conversion, providing a valuable method for the fabrication of EMI shielding composites.

Bioinspired Dynamic Matrix Based on Developable Structure of MXene-Cellulose Nanofibers (CNF) Soft Actuators

Tiantian Dai,Yanting Liu,Dandan Rong,Meng Wang,Zhenkun Qi,Yinling Zhao,Xiandi Wang,Qing Yang,Lei Wei,Mengxiao Chen

Inspired by natural organisms, soft actuators can convert environmental stimuli into mechanical deformation, making them indispensable for applications in a variety of fields such as soft robotics. MXene, displaying exceptional attributes in conductivity, thermal efficiency, good dispersibility etc., has emerged as a preferred material for high-performance thermal actuators. However, single actuators struggle to achieve complex tasks realized by intelligent robotic systems. Herein, a bioinspired dynamic matrix is presented utilizing the developable structure of MXene-cellulose nanofibers (CNF) soft actuators. The inclusion of CNF considerably bolsters the mechanical properties of MXene. The MXene-CNF film possessed a higher working strain range (≈14%) than pure MXene film (≈2%). The designed developable structures complete the actuating movements. The sensing layer integration with the actuating layer led to an extremely low touch detection limit (0.3 kPa) and expedited actuating-feedback due to the interaction between contact charging and electrostatic induction. A responsive dynamic matrix containing 3 × 3 soft actuators, completed with a close-looped sensing-feedback function, is developed similar to the behavior of the mimosa plant. This mimosa-inspired dynamic matrix is capable of identifying the source of touch stimuli and providing immediate feedback. This research broadens the potential for enhancing adaptability and intelligence of soft robotic system.

Flexible Positive Temperature Coefficient Composites (PVAc/EVA/GP-CNF) with Room Temperature Curie Point

Chao Du,Yangyang Zhang,Jiangmin Lin,Guotao Fan,Can Zhou,Yan Yu

Polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PTC) materials with low switching temperature points are crucial for numerous electronic devices, which typically function within the room temperature range (0–40 °C). Ideal polymeric PTC materials for flexible electronic thermal control should possess a room-temperature switching temperature, low room-temperature resistivity, exceptional mechanical flexibility, and adaptive thermal control properties. In this study, a novel PTC material with a room-temperature switching temperature and superb mechanical properties has been designed. A blend of a semi-crystalline polymer EVA with a low melting temperature (Tm) and an amorphous polymer (PVAc) with a low glass transition temperature (Tg) was prepared. Low-cost graphite was chosen as the conductive filler, while CNF was incorporated as a hybrid filler to enhance the material’s heating stability. PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF exhibited the lowest room temperature resistivity, and its PTC strength (1.1) was comparable to that without CNF addition, with a Curie temperature of 29.4 °C. Room temperature Joule heating tests revealed that PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF achieved an equilibrium temperature of approximately 42 °C at 25 V, with a heating power of 3.04 W and a power density of 3.04 W/cm2. The Young’s modulus of PVAc0.4/EVA0.6/GP-3wt.% CNF was 9.24 MPa, and the toughness value was 1.68 MJ/m3, indicating that the elasticity and toughness of the composites were enhanced after mixing the fillers, and the mechanical properties of the composites were improved by blending graphite with CNF.

Preparation and Performance of a Cu@PtCu/CNF Oxygen Reduction Catalyst Membrane by Electrospinning

Xiaoting Deng,Min Lao,Zhenqin Li,Shaofeng Yin,Feng Liu,Zhiyong Xie,Yili Liang

A flexible carbon nanofiber film with high conductivity was prepared by electrospinning, and then Cu was uniformly deposited on the fiber film by pulse electrodeposition to prepare Cu nanocrystal/carbon nanofiber film. Cu@PtCu/carbon nanofiber (Cu@PtCu/CNF) catalytic films were synthesized by in-situ substitution reduction. The Cu@PtCu/CNF catalytic film solves the problem of uneven activity of the catalytic layer and can be directly used as the catalytic layer. The morphology and structure were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical test results show that the Cu@PtCu/CNF catalytic films obtained at the chloroplatinic acid concentration of 0.5 mg·mL–1 (N2) exhibited 2.5 times specific activity when compared with commercial Pt/C catalysts. After 5000 cycles of stability test, the electrochemical surface areas (ECSAs) were still maintained at 80%, and the half-wave potential decreased by 11 mV, which was better than those of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Sandwich structured RGO/CNF/RGO composite films for superior mechanical and thermally conductive properties

Shan Bo,Xiong Yuzhu,Li Yihang,Yang Hang,Chen Yuanfu

It is urgent and significant to develop a thermal interface material (TIM) with both high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical strength for high-performance electronic devices. For the first time, we designed and fabricated a sandwich structured TIM, constructed by a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) core layer sandwiched by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) shell, with copper ions as a crosslinker, via a facile and scalable vacuum filtration process. The continuous rGO layers on the surface of the composite provided a good thermal conductive pathway for the composite films. The thermal conductivity of the sandwiched films with 8.0 wt% rGO reached 29.5 W/mK, which is over eight times than the CNF films, and realized an ultrafast thermal diffusion time at 73 ms. The sandwich structure combined with the cross-linker of copper ions also plays a synergistic role in construct mechanical strength. Compared to the CNF, the tensile strength of the sandwiched films with 8.0 wt% rGO unprecedentedly reached 314 MPa (nearly three times of bare CNF films), and the elongation increased 63%. In addition, the films also shows high water stability and excellent flexibility, which makes it a very promising for advanced flexible or wearable electronics. This work provides a new insight in rational structure design and novel scalable fabrication strategy to develop TIM with outstanding mechanical strength and thermal conductivity.

Yarn-ball-shaped CNF/MWCNT microspheres intercalating Ti3C2Tx MXene for electromagnetic interference shielding films

Kunpeng Qian,Hongmin Wu,Jianhui Fang,Yuhuan Yang,Miao Miao,Shaomei Cao,Liyi Shi,Xin Feng

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with excellent metallic conductivity have proved promising in its application of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. A hierarchical hybrid film with ultrathin thickness composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers embedded with yarn-ball-shaped microspheres of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was designed to improve the absorption of electromagnetic waves (EMWs). The addition of yarn-ball-shaped microspheres is to shield more EMWs via multiple reflections in the inner space and reduce the undesirable emissions into the air. After thermal annealing treatment, the ultrathin film with intercalation of the carbonized yarn-ball-shaped CNF/MWCNT microspheres exhibited enhanced EMWs absorption as an important part of shielding effectiveness (45.1±0.9 dB) as well as excellent mechanical stability (≈0.9 million bending times). Thus, the well-designed structure of multilayered hybrid films with intercalated conductive microspheres can be a good candidate for higher absorption in EMI shielding effectiveness and outstanding mechanical properties.

Sustainable and antibacterial sandwich-like Ag-Pulp/CNF composite paper for oil/water separation

Wenxin Zhu,Wei Huang,Wenhua Zhou,Zhe Qiu,Zheng Wang,Haojun Li,Yonggui Wang,Jian Li,Yanjun Xie

Bio-based membranes for emulsion separation are sustainable, low-cost, renewable, biodegradable, and nontoxic. Herein, an antibacterial sandwich-like composite paper was fabricated by a facile process using Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-coated pulp fibers and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The obtained Ag-Pulp/CNF composite paper was superhydrophilic, allowing a 96 % separation efficiency for various oil-in-water emulsions. This outstanding separation efficiency was maintained over 20 separation cycles. The composite paper also showed satisfactory separation performance for water-in-oil emulsions after modification to render the surface hydrophobic. The CNFs provided the composite a nanoscale pore, which rejected nearly 100 % of bacteria when used to filter bacteria-contaminated emulsions due to a physical barrier effect. Attributed to the intrinsic antibacterial capability of Ag NPs, the composite paper exhibited strong antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli . Thus, the composite paper that was mainly derived from sustainable pulp fibers exhibited potential performance for oil/water separation and water purification.

A superhydrophobic pulp/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) membrane via coating ZnO suspensions for multifunctional applications

Zuozhu Yin,Min Li,Zhiwei Chen,Xiaoxiang Chen,Kaiyuan Liu,Dongpeng Zhou,Mingshan Xue,Junfei Ou,Yu Xie,Sheng Lei,Chan Xie,Yidan Luo

Bio-based membranes for removing organic dye and microorganism-containing complicated oil-water effluents simultaneously are sustainable, low-cost, renewable, biodegradable, and nontoxic. Here, a robust, sustainable and molecular-level superhydrophobic Pulp/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) composite membrane (SPCCM) via crosslinking of nanofibers and coating ZnO suspensions for accomplishing this purpose is proposed. The results show that this designed SPCCM has superior superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 163 ± 2°) and superoleophilicity (oil contact angle: 0 °), which has a great separation efficiency for separating oil-water mixture (92 %) and a high flux (1435 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ). Moreover, SPCCM showed good durability in harsh environment (such as: bending, corrosion solution, temperature, etc). It also showed that the synergistic impact of electrostatic adsorption and ZnO photocatalyst is responsible for the high degradation capacity (Degradation under visible light using 300 w xenon lamp, high degradation efficiency up to 98 %). Furthermore, the SPCCM had a high level of anti-biofouling for microorganisms. Thus, the SPCCM mainly derived from sustainable pulp fibers showed potential performance for oil/water separation and water purification .

Zhixuan Huang,Kaifeng Yu,Doudou Wang,Ye Zhang,Lili Li,Ce Liang

Herein, a facile way was reported for fabrication of the anode nanocomposites with efficient lithium/sodium storage and excellent cycling stability. Iron phytate nanoparticles embedded in TiO 2 (IP/TiO 2 ) was prepared by coaxial electrospinning with the aid of PAN and PVP. N, P-doped Fe 2 P@TiO 2 core-shell carbon nanofibers (Fe 2 P@TiO 2 /CNF) was prepared after heat treatment. When Fe 2 P@TiO 2 /CNF were introduced as a self-supporting anode in lithium/sodium-ion batteries, Fe 2 P core supplied high energy density , and N, P-doped carbon fiber could induce the structural defects, facilitate electron transport and improve electrical conductivity . Moreover, TiO 2 shell inhibited volumetric expansion and pulverization of Fe 2 P core and improved the cycling stability of the anode. The Fe 2 P@TiO 2 /CNF electrode exhibited a large reversible capacity (LIB: 1175.7 and SIB: 519.8 mAh g −1 ), excellent cycling ability and outstanding rate performance. As anode in LIBs for Fe 2 P@TiO 2 /CNF, capacitance and diffusion control played important roles in Li + intercalation and deintercalation, simultaneously. When Fe 2 P@TiO 2 /CNF anode was used in SIBs, capacitive control behavior occupied a major role and displayed outstanding electrochemical performance . This work offers a possibility for designing anode nanocomposite with outstanding capacity and cycling stability in lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Gradient assembled MXene/Fe3O4/CNF soft actuator with synergistic multilevel electromagnetic dissipation for interference shielding

Wenhao Duan,Pengcheng Deng,Genrui Xu,Zhenming Chen,Peng Li,Canhui Lu,Zehang Zhou

Smart materials with multi-responsive soft actuators with desirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance are greatly required for next-generation electronics. Herein, a mesoscale assembly strategy via layer-by-layer vacuum-assisted filtration is proposed to fabricate MXene/Fe 3 O 4 /CNF (MC) composite films with precise asymmetric concentration gradients. Driven by the significant hygroscopic swelling mismatch and superparamagnetism, the MC film exhibits high sensitivity and excellent actuation performance under humidity and external magnetic field stimuli. Programmable 2D-to-3D biomimetic “flower buds” and non-contact precise magnetic navigation are successfully achieved. Furthermore, leveraging the highly conductive surface of MXene, a smart switch is developed to convert environmental humidity fluctuations directly into logical electrical (ON/OFF) signals. The introduction of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and the physical gradient structure effectively optimize the hysteresis loss of electromagnetic waves and the bottom-layer back-reflection-triggered multilevel energy dissipation, achieving an impressive EMI SE of 43.4 dB, governed by a reflection-dominated mechanism uniquely enhanced by internal absorption. Combined with rapid, wide-temperature-range photothermal conversion, this work provides a novel design paradigm for intelligent soft robotics and flexible passive electronics in complex environments.

Design of heat-sealing starch-based bioplastics reinforced with different modified starches and TEMPO-CNF

Di Xie,Jinhong Li,Congcong Zhang,Siwen Yang,An Yang,Shanshan Song,Yongming Song

An increasing interest in utilizing biomass resources to develop bioplastics, aiming to mitigate the environmental and energy issues resulting from the use of petroleum-based plastics. However, bioplastics that suffering from poor interface bonding and hydrophilicity of the feedstock usually exhibit inadequate mechanical properties, water stability and functionality, which hinder their practical applications. Herein, a simple and effective strategy was proposed to develop high-performance starch-based bioplastics with thermoplastic by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxy-oxidized cellulose nanofibers and different modified starch fillers coupled with chemical cross-linking reinforcement. Due to the full utilization of the advantages of each component, outstanding interface bonding and rich chemical cross-linking, all the obtained modified starch-based bioplastics demonstrated excellent mechanical properties (up to 20.52 MPa) and superior water stability. Besides, the starch-based bioplastics could be reused after dissolution-regeneration, and completely biodegradable after disposal. At the same time, the starch-based bioplastics exhibited remarkable heat-sealing properties, which provided more convenient possibility of producing packaging materials for bioplastics used in different fields.

One-step synthesis of ZnO/SnO2-CNF nanocomposites for sensitive NO2 detection under UV illumination

Yan Liu,Xuebin Zhou,Zhihua Ying,Yuan Jiang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) detection is critical for environmental and industrial safety, yet existing sensors often suffer from limited sensitivity and slow response. To address this, we report a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO/SnO 2 heterostructures via a one-step hydrothermal method using cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as a templating agent. Under UV activation, the optimized composite demonstrates a high response value of 45 toward 3 ppm NO 2 , along with rapid response and recovery times of 15 s and 20 s, respectively. The CNF-assisted synthesis significantly enhanced NO 2 sensitivity and selectivity compared to conventional methods, attributed to synergistic effects of increased surface area and interfacial charge transfer. This scalable approach enables high-performance NO 2 sensors for real-time monitoring.
