Metal (Ni2+/Co2+) sulfides modified BiVO4 for effective improvement in photoelectrochemical water splitting

Houde She,Man Jiang,Pengfei Yue,Jingwei Huang,Lei Wang,Jianzhang Li,Gangqiang Zhu,Qizhao Wang

The performance of BiVO 4 for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water decomposition is commonly limited by reaction kinetics. In this work, NiS and CoS nanospheres were respectively loaded on BiVO 4 thin films (NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 composites) to improve its reaction kinetics for PEC water decomposition. Both physical and chemical properties of these composites were characterized by XRD , SEM, TEM, PL and UV-DRS. The photoelectric properties of the samples were verified by testing LSV , i-t, EIS and IPCE. The formation of the composites can effectively prevent the recombination of carriers and consequently accelerate the separation of electrons and holes. NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 can reach photocurrent of 2.1 mA cm −2 and 2.7 mA cm −2 under light respectively, at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which are 1.75 times and 2.25 times that of BiVO 4 (1.2 mA cm −2 ). The hydrogen production of the NiS/BiVO 4 and CoS/BiVO 4 photoanodes was 4.7 and 7.3 times higher than that of BiVO 4 photoanode, respectively.

Epitaxial growth-engineered CoS@CoSe2 heterojunction for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Chuanqi Feng,Chengbao Ge,Rongxiao Ma,Yebang Zhou,Lumin Wang,Dashuai Zhang,Zhong-Zheng Gao,Shaohong Zhang,Kang Wang,Peng Zhang,Zhaohui Huang,Bijiang Geng

Single metal chalcogenide catalysts still face challenges of insufficient catalytic active sites and slow catalytic reaction kinetics for oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Herein, a novel CoS@CoSe 2 heterojunction composite catalyst was constructed through heterojunction interface engineering strategy. The single-crystal CoSe 2 nanorods were successfully epitaxially grown on the surface of amorphous CoS nanoblocks by a two-step hydrothermal cascade in-situ growth technique. Benefiting from the interface coupling and synergistic effect of the CoS@CoSe 2 heterojunction, the designed electrocatalyst exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for OER, attaining a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a low overpotential of only 115 mV, surpassing other reported chalcogenide electrocatalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the work function difference between CoS and CoSe 2 induces directional redistribution of charges at the heterojunction interface, rendering the CoSe 2 surface electron-deficient, thereby significantly optimising OH⁻ adsorption energy. Simultaneously, the heterojunction structure significantly enhances the total density of states around the Fermi level while also improving the d -band center of metallic active sites. These modifications promote more favorable adsorption of reaction intermediates, effectively reduce the energy barrier for the OER, accelerate reaction kinetics, and ultimately improve the overall catalytic performance. This study presents a promising strategy for the rational design and development of high-performance catalytic materials.

Study of the ReS₂-CoO/CoS₂ Heterostructure for Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalysis

Dan-pu Zhao,Zhi-kun Peng,Shuai Wei,Qing-Qing Pang,Qiao-yun Liu,Zhong-yi Liu

Heterogeneous interfaces are an effective strategy to modulate interfacial properties and enhance catalytic functionality. However, their dynamic evolution under reaction conditions remains elusive, hindering rational catalyst design. Herein, we report a ReS2-CoO/CoS2 heterostructure to investigate its structural transformation under electrocatalytic water splitting conditions, as well as to modulate its activity and stability. Electrochemical measurements reveal exceptional bifunctional catalytic activity, with overpotentials of 25 mV for HER (at 10 mA·cm⁻²) and 241 mV for OER (at 50 mA·cm⁻²). The synergistic interfacial interaction substantially enhances the kinetic processes. The integrated interface between CoO and CoS2 on ReS2 not only ensures intimate electronic coupling but also facilitates abundant surface defect formation, as confirmed by FTIR, XPS, and EPR analyses. In-situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrates structural robustness during HER, whereas a significant surface reconstruction occurs during the OER, in which the initial CoO/CoS2 phase transforms into CoO/CoOOH, serving as the new active species. The catalyst achieves efficient overall water splitting performance (1.43 V at 10 mA‧cm⁻2) with sustained performance. These findings offer valuable insights into interfacial engineering strategies for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Hydrogen-bond-engineered solvent microstructure enhances COS removal in MEA-MDEA systems

Bin Zhao,Yujing Liu,Bo Zhou,Peidong Zuo,Liping Chang,Jiawei Zhong,Zhenyi Du,Mengmeng Wu,Zhifeng Qin

Understanding the structure-property-performance relationship of mixed amine solvents is essential for developing high-efficiency Carbonyl sulfur (COS) removal technologies. In this work, the thermophysical properties, intermolecular interactions, and COS capture performance of monoethanolamine (MEA) and N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) binary aqueous systems were systematically investigated. The density ( ρ ) and viscosity ( ν ) of MEA - MDEA mixtures were measured over a temperature range of 293.15–318.15 K with varying MDEA mole fractions. Key thermodynamic parameters, including viscosity deviation (Δ η ), excess molar volume ( V m E ), and excess Gibbs free energy of activation (Δ G *E ), were subsequently calculated. The results reveal that within an MDEA mole fraction range of 0.35–0.60, Δ η reaches a maximum while V m E remains negative, indicating stronger intermolecular attraction and denser molecular packing. Spectroscopic characterizations combined with quantum chemical calculations further confirm the formation of directional O—N–H hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of MDEA and the amino nitrogen of MEA, which stabilize the solvent microstructure. Based on these findings, COS absorption-desorption experiments were conducted. Notably, the mixed amine systems with MDEA mole fractions of 0.3852 and 0.5446 exhibited a significant synergistic effect, maintaining over 95 % COS removal efficiency throughout the 120 min absorption process, along with excellent regeneration performance characterized by higher and more stable desorption rates during the 60 min regeneration phase. This work establishes a clear structure-property-reaction correlation, providing valuable molecular-level insights for the rational design of efficient amine-based absorbents for industrial COS capture.

Efficient degradation of sulfonamides by CoS-activated peracetic acid advanced oxidation system

Yuxuan Chen,Tingyue Gong,Jiayin Yan,Zhijun An,Yiwen Zhang,Hao Zhou,Minghuo Wu

Background Advanced oxidation processes are considered one of the most promising techniques for removing persistent organic pollutants in water. To achieve efficient degradation of sulfonamides (SAs), cobalt sulfide (CoS) was synthesized and used as a catalyst for the activation of peracetic acid (PAA) to build a new advanced oxidation system (CoS/PAA). Results The reaction conditions of catalyst dosage, PAA concentration, initial pH and substrate concentration were systematically investigated using sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a model pollutant. At the optimized conditions (80 mg L −1 CoS and 0.5 mmol L −1 PAA), four SAs (sulfisoxazole, sulfadiazine, sulfadimethoxine and SMX, each at 5 mg L −1 ) could be completely degraded within 2–10 min. This CoS/PAA system could withstand interference from inorganic anions of Cl − and H 2 PO 4 − , and the leaching of cobalt ions in treated water was well below the environmental quality standards of 1 mg L −1 in China. The quenching experiment revealed that organic free radicals (R  O • ) played a key role in the degradation process. Moreover, a removal rate of 95.03% for SAs in complex pond water was achieved. Conclusion The CoS/PAA system showed promising application prospects in the SA-containing wastewater treatment. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Biomimetic mineralization behavior of COS-grafted silk fibroin following hexokinase-mediated phosphorylation

Qian Zhou,Jingjing Yuan,Yalin Wang,Ping Wang,Jiugang Yuan,Chao Deng,Qiang Wang

Silk fibroin (SF) has potential applications in the biomedical field because of its excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In the current study, chitooligosaccharide (COS) was enzymatically grafted onto SF using laccase . Subsequently, COS-grafted SF (SF-g-COS) was treated enzymatically in the presence of hexokinase and Mg-chelated adenosine triphosphate (ATP), so as to introduce phosphate groups onto the fibroin chains and promote the deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) during in situ biomimetic mineralization . The efficacy of phosphorylation and biomimetic mineralization of the SF-g-COS was evaluated by means of HPLC , MALDI-TOF MS, FTIR , XRD and EDS-Mapping. The results indicate that hexokinase has the capability to catalyze the phosphorylation of COS, resulting in an increase in the quantity of phosphorus in the SF-g-COS. Following mineralization of the phosphorylated SF-g-COS, a greater number of mineral phases were detected on its surface, accompanied by a higher content of calcium and phosphorus compared with other specimens. Cell viability tests using NIH/3T3 cells and cellular adhesion potential with MG-63 cells indicated that the fibroin-based biocomposite exhibited acceptable biocompatibility and superior cellular adhesion properties. The present study describes a novel method for preparation of fibroin/HAp biocomposites for bone tissue engineering.

High-performance NiSe2-CoS electrodes for sustainable energy storage in hybrid supercapacitors

Muhammad Sanaullah Shah,Zhang Zhenyu,Shi Jiangwei,Xie Wanguo,Wang Shuiying,Hongying Hou,Zuo Xiaoqing,Muhammad Zia Ullah Shah

Development of high-performance supercapacitors that have better energy storage capacity is necessary in meeting the needs of the future energy storage technologies. NiSe 2 -CoS composite electrode was also produced and incorporated in an asymmetric supercapacitor structure using activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode. The NiSe 2 -CoS||AC device was able to operate steadily over a potential window of 1.5 V with better electrochemical characteristics being shown by the synergistic interaction between NiSe 2 and CoS being observed in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis where minimal internal resistance was observed and therefore efficient electron and ion movement within the electrode material. The NiSe 2 -CoS||AC supercapacitor has been found to be a good candidate to be used in high-performance supercapacitors in the future; this is because of its high capacitance, rate efficiency, and high stability of its operation during discharge-charge cycles, which resulted in a high energy density of 66.3 Wh/kg at a power density of 3665 W/kg. This work demonstrates that NiSe 2 -CoS nanocomposites are strong contenders for use in future high-performance supercapacitor systems, due to their excellent energy storage capability, rate efficiency, and long-term operational reliability.

Hexagonal Single-Crystal CoS Nanosheets: Controllable Synthesis and Tunable Oxygen Evolution Performance

Yue Zhang,Guibo Zheng,Aolin Li,Xukun Zhu,Junjie Jiang,Qi Zhang,Lianwen Deng,Xiaohui Gao,Fangping Ouyang

Cobalt-based sulfides with variable valence states and unique physical and chemical properties have shown great potential as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for electrochemical water-splitting reactions. However, poor morphological characteristics and a small specific surface area limit its further application. Here, hexagonal single-crystal two-dimensional (2D) CoS nanosheets with different thicknesses are successfully prepared by an atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition method. Because of the advantages of the 2D structure, more exposed catalytic active sites, better reactant adsorption ability, accelerated electron transfer, and enhanced electrical conductivities can be achieved from the thinnest 5 nm CoS nanosheets (CoS-5), significantly improving OER performance. The electrochemical tests manifest that CoS-5 show an overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 65.6 mV dec–1 in the OER in an alkaline solution, superior to those for other thicknesses of CoS, bulk CoS, and RuO2. For the mechanistic investigation, the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct) and the highest double-layer capacitance (Cdl) were obtained for CoS-5, demonstrating the faster OER kinetics and the larger active area. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the enhanced density of states around the Fermi level and higher H2O molecule adsorption energy for thinner CoS nanosheets, promoting its intrinsic catalytic activity. Moreover, the two-electrode system with CoS-5 as the anode and Pt/C as the cathode requires only 1.56 V to attain 10 mA cm–2 in the overall water-splitting reaction. We believe that this study will provide a fresh view for thickness-dependent catalytic performance and offers a new material for the study of electronic and energy devices.

Research on Cu x S y /CoS z /graphene supercapacitor electrode materials

Duan Xiaobo,Ding Yanhong,Yu Meng

Multilayer graphene was prepared in this study by microwave burst method. Cu9S5/CoS/graphene and CuS/CoS2/graphene composites were obtained by hydrothermal method to regulate the molecular structure and combination of Cu and Co metal sulfides on graphene substrate. Graphite oxide was doped by hydrothermal method, and then Cu9S5/CoS/graphene composite was prepared by microwave explosion method. Raman, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the self-made graphene. Results showed that the multilayer graphene had a bag-like structure which was beneficial to anchor sulfide. Three graphene-based composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy spectrum analysis and electrochemical properties. Moreover, results showed that CuS/CoS2/graphene had the best electrochemical performance, and its specific capacity reached 324 F/g when the current density was 1 A · g–1, which was much higher than that of the other two samples. Capacity retention rate, interfacial charge transfer resistance and electrolyte diffusion resistance also have advantages.

Engineered hollow cubic structures CoS/NiS heterojunctions enable high-performance magnesium-ion batteries

Runjing Xu,Han Xiao,Yuan Fang,Ya Chen,Pengfei Zhang,Kailin Li,Yuxuan Li,Huinan Yu,Jiayun Zhang,Chaoxin Wu,Xin Gao,Tao Meng,Xiaodong Chen,Lifeng Cui

Rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries (RMBs) demonstrate notable benefits, including higher theoretical energy density, cost-effectiveness, and improved safety characteristics, positioning them as a viable substitute for conventional energy storage solutions. Nevertheless, the ongoing development of high-performance RMBs continues to face inevitable challenges, such as unsatisfactory practical capacity, inadequate cycle durability, swift energy degradation, and a comparatively limited-service life. Herein, CoS/NiS nanomaterials with cubic-shaped morphology were prepared by a two-step metal sulfide template-free solvothermal synthesis method. The material with internal cavity structure effectively mitigates the large expansion of magnesium-ion battery cathode material due to Mg 2+ embedding during the charging and discharging process, and provides a robustness electrode-electrolyte interface, thus greatly improving the cycle life. Besides, the introduction of Ni elements into CoS materials may form heterojunctions thereby lowering the potential barrier of the conversion reaction and improving the reaction kinetics and redox reversibility. In addition, the abundance of highly electronegative S S bonds in the CoS/NiS material, which also provides many electrochemically active sites and smooth transport paths for the embedding of Mg 2+ , leads to the reduction of its polarization and the improvement of its reaction kinetics, which makes the CoS/NiS as a RMBs cathode material with a high specific capacity and a long cycling life. Thus, this research presents a feasible and effective strategy for enhancing the Mg 2+ storage capability of engineered CoS nanomaterials, with potential applicability and adaptability to other electrode materials.

Xijun Wei,Yanhong Li,Huarong Peng,Ming Zhou,Yingqing Ou,Yibin Yang,Yunhuai Zhang,Peng Xiao

In this work, hollow CoS nanobox (noted as HCSN) have been successfully synthesized via annealing and hydrothermal process from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) template. When tested as positive electrode materials in alkaline aqueous electrolyte, it shows high specific capacitance of 720 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , good rate capability (82.1%) and good cycling stability with 86.4% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . To further demonstrate the advantages of our ZIF-67 derived materials, asymmetric energy storage device was assembled (HCSN//NC), where the as-prepared HCSN was employed as the anode and ZIF-67-derived nanoporous carbon (noted as NC) as the cathode. This device achieves high energy density (80 Wh kg −1 at a specific power density of 882 W kg −1 ), good rate capability (53.3 Wh kg −1 even at a specific power density of 7.9 kW kg −1 ) and long-term stability up to 10,000 cycles. More importantly, it could simultaneously light up 12 LEDs in parallel, demonstrating its potential in practical applications.

Anionic TeO32− doped CoS nanomaterials for high-performance magnesium-ion battery cathode materials

Runjing Xu,Han Xiao,Huinan Yu,Jiayun Zhang,Yanru Yang,Pengfei Zhang,Ya Chen,Xin Gao,Xiaodong Chen,Lifeng Cui

Rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries (RMBs) exhibit distinct advantages, such as superior theoretical capacity, economic viability, and enhanced safety features, making them a promising alternative to traditional energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the current research of high-performance RMBs is still fraught with many shortcomings of the unexpected actual capacity, poor cycling stability rapid energy decay, and a relatively short lifespan. Herein, Grape-bunch CoS/Te materials are prepared by one-step metal sulfide template-free anion-doped solvent-thermal synthesis. The as-prepared material displays a well-defined skeletal structure, which maximizes electrolyte-electrode interaction and shortens Mg 2+ migration pathways. Besides, the CoS/Te composites exhibit lattice expansion because of anionic TeO 3 2− doping manifested as widening of the lattice spacing, which significantly reduces the resistance to the interlayer movement of Mg 2+ , thus contributing to improvement of the reaction kinetics of magnesium storage in RMBs. The anion-doped CoS-based composites not only weaken Mg 2+ -cathode electrostatic interactions but also provide numerous active sites, accelerating magnesium storage kinetics. The conversion reaction energy barrier is significantly reduced through Te incorporation in CoS, with reaction kinetics being simultaneously optimized, which contributes to enhanced capacity retention, superior rate performance, and prolonged cycling stability. The electrochemical storage mechanism of converted Mg 2+ was revealed by characterization. Therefore, this study offers a practical and viable approach for elevating the Mg 2+ storage performance of modified CoS nanomaterials, which is expected to be applicable and generalizable to other electrode materials.
