As traditional methods for retrieving natural vitamin E suffer from harsh operating conditions and poor process performance, seeking more energy-efficient and sustainable alternative approaches is highly desirable. In this work, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a class of emerging media are particularly proposed for the extraction of vitamin E (modeled by α-tocopherol) from deodorized distillates under mild operating conditions. To select DESs suitable for this task, a rational screening method is presented which covers the thermodynamic evaluation of individual components and component combinations, the assessment of environment, health, and safety (EHS) impacts of components, and the eutectic behavior estimation of component combinations. Based on experimentally reported DESs from the literature, individual components as well as random combinations of potential hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) are successively prescreened by COSMO-RS predicted thermodynamic properties. Five EHS-related properties of HBDs are assessed by VEGA. The formation of eutectics and the corresponding operating window of different HBA–HBD combinations are estimated by COSMO-RS solid–liquid equilibria prediction. Experiments are finally performed with the top-ranked DESs, which well validates the reliability of the screening method and identifies tetrabutylphosphonium chloride–ethanolamine (2:1) as a suitable DES for the α-tocopherol extraction.

A novel method for extracting polyphenols from Moringa oleifera Lam. ( M. oleifera ) using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) has been developed, with extraction conditions optimized via an artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) to maximize efficiency. Traditional extraction methods for polyphenols from M. oleifera leaves, such as ethanol extraction, are often associated with low efficiency, environmental concerns, and high operational costs. Furthermore, the empirical selection of solvents and extraction conditions is time-consuming and lacks precision. In this study, 28 NADES were employed to predict the solubility of polyphenol molecules through a conductor-like screening model for realistic solvents (COSMO-RS) model. Based on the results, eight highly effective NADES combinations were selected and experimentally verified. The betaine-maleic acid (Bet-MA) combination with the ultrasonic-assisted extraction showed the highest extraction rate of M. oleifera leaves polyphenol (MOLP), which was 1.56 times that of ultrasonic-assisted ethanol solvent. Simplex centroid mixture design (SCMD) and two-level factor experiments were conducted to optimize the ratio of betaine, maleic acid, and water and identify the most influential extraction factors on MOLP yield. The ANN-GA model was further applied to refine the extraction conditions and analyze their interactions on MOLP content. Additionally, antioxidant assays demonstrated that MOLP extracted with the Bet-MA solvent displayed significant antioxidant activity. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that COSMO-RS and ANN-GA may serve as powerful tools for solvent selection and extraction process optimization, offering a green and efficient approach for polyphenol extraction from M. oleifera leaves. The findings highlight the potential of NADES-based extraction methods for broader applications in the extraction of various bioactive substances, contributing to the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly extraction technologies.

The industrial production of biobased n-butanol is primarily hindered by the high cost of separation, which results from its low concentration in the fermentation broth and the formation of a water–n-butanol azeotrope. Liquid–liquid extraction is a preferred separation method for azeotrope separation, with efficacy dependent on extractant choice. Thymol/carvacrol (hydrogen-bond donors, HBDs) and C8–C10 fatty acids (hydrogen-bond acceptors, HBAs) were selected based on COSMO-RS predictions and consideration of HDESs’ physicochemical properties. Six HDESs with varying compositions were synthesized. The liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the corresponding water (1) n-butanol (2) and HDES (3) systems were measured at 303.15 K and 101.3 kPa. The effects of HBD structure, HBA chain length, and HBD/HBA ratio were systematically studied. The data were correlated with the NRTL model, and the extraction mechanism was elucidated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. All six HDESs proved effective for separating n-butanol from water, with HDES5 (thymol-capric acid, 1:1) identified as the optimal extractant. Extraction performance is governed by three key factors: thymol outperforms carvacrol as the HBD, longer fatty-acid alkyl chains enhance selectivity, and a higher thymol-to-acid molar ratio strengthens interactions. The NRTL model reliably correlates the experimental data. MD simulations confirm that van der Waals forces dominate the extraction.

During the preparation of n-propyl acetate (NPAC), an azeotropic mixture of NPAC and n-propanol (NPA) will form inevitably, which is difficult to separate by ordinary distillation. In this work, COSMO-RS model was applied to screen appropriate ionic liquids (ILs) to separate the binary azeotrope of NPAC - NPA. 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([DMIM][Ac]), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([OMIM][Ac]), and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([HMIM][Ac]) were selected as entrainers based on solvent capacity and selectivity. The vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data of the binary system (NPA - NPAC) and the ternary system (NPA - NPAC - IL) were measured at atmospheric pressure. The thermodynamic consistency of VLE data was verified by van Ness test and Wisniak's L-W test. The NRTL (non-random two liquids) model was used to correlate the VLE experimental data and obtained good applicability. The experimental results demonstrated that all three ionic liquids can improve the relative volatility of NPAC to NPA, and the separation effect is more obvious with the increase of ionic liquid content. The separation performance order of three ionic liquids follows: [HMIM][Ac] > [OMIM][Ac] > [DMIM][Ac]. Finally, ESP analysis, mutual penetration analysis, and IGMH analysis plus QTAIM topological analysis were used to explore the mechanism of separation. The analysis results indicate that the interaction between ionic liquids and NPA is stronger than that between ionic liquids and NPAC. In addition, the stronger interaction between [DMIM][Ac] and NPA is due to their strong hydrogen bond (HB) interactions.

Carbazole is an irreplaceable basic organic chemical raw material and intermediate in industry. The separation of carbazole from anthracene oil by environmental benign solvents is important but still a challenge in chemical engineering. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a sustainable green separation solvent have been proposed for the separation of carbazole from model anthracene oil. In this research, three quaternary ammonium-based DESs were prepared using ethylene glycol (EG) as hydrogen bond donor and tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC), tetrabutylammonium bromide or choline chloride as hydrogen bond acceptors. To explore their extraction performance of carbazole, the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) model was used to predict the activity coefficient at infinite dilution ( γ ∞ ) of carbazole in DESs, and the result indicated TBAC:EG (1:2) had the stronger extraction ability for carbazole due to the higher capacity at infinite dilution ( C ∞ ) value. Then, the separation performance of these three DESs was evaluated by experiments, and the experimental results were in good agreement with the COSMO-RS prediction results. The TBAC:EG (1:2) was determined as the most promising solvent. Additionally, the extraction conditions of TBAC:EG (1:2) were optimized, and the extraction efficiency, distribution coefficient and selectivity of carbazole could reach up to 85.74%, 30.18 and 66.10%, respectively. Moreover, the TBAC:EG (1:2) could be recycled by using environmentally friendly water as antisolvent. In addition, the separation performance of TBAC:EG (1:2) was also evaluated by real crude anthracene, the carbazole was obtained with purity and yield of 85.32%, 60.27%, respectively. Lastly, the extraction mechanism was elucidated by σ -profiles and interaction energy analysis. Theoretical calculation results showed that the main driving force for the extraction process was the hydrogen bonding ((N–H … Cl) and van der Waals interactions (C–H … O and C–H … π), which corresponding to the blue and green isosurfaces in IGMH analysis. This work presented a novel method for separating carbazole from crude anthracene oil, and will provide an important reference for the separation of other high value-added products from coal tar.

Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and diisopropyl ether (DIPE) are two commonly used extractants in industry, but their efficiency in extracting phenols , especially polyhydroxyphenols, is low. In the work, a highly-efficient extractant was proposed to extract phenolic compounds, including polyhydroxyphenols. The interactions between three extractants, cyclohexanone (CYC), MIBK and DIPE, and phenols were analyzed by the COSMO-RS method and CYC shows stronger interactions with phenols than MIBK and DIPE. The results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) show that strong hydrogen bonds are formed between CYC and phenolic compounds, in agreement with the results of the COSMO-RS method. The effects of concentration, temperature and pH values on the extractant performance were studied. Results showed that the performance of CYC is the best, followed by MIBK and DIPE, whose performance is the worst. As CYC was used as the extractant, the distribution coefficients of the three phenolic compounds, phenol, resorcinol and phloroglucinol, are 96.7, 47.8, 13.0, respectively. These values are 35%, 263%, and 160% larger than those of phenol, resorcinol and phloroglucinol, respectively, corresponding to MIBK. CYC is a highly-efficient extractant for the extraction of phenolic compounds, including polyhydroxyphenol.

Stilbenes are bioactive phytochemicals with notable health benefits, yet their extraction is hindered by hydrophobicity and reliance on toxic solvents. This study introduces a green, sustainable approach for stilbene extraction using hydrophilic natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), with cajaninstilbene acid (CSA) from pigeon pea ( Cajanus cajan ) as the model compound. After screening, the optimal NADES and ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions were identified, achieving a predicted CSA yield of 0.832 mg/g. The method demonstrated excellent reusability and sustainability. Spectroscopic analyses (ATR-FTIR, 1 H NMR, 1 3 C NMR, 2D NOESY), COSMO-RS, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that NADES-4 forms a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular structure involving betaine, glycerol, and water. MD simulations further clarified the thermodynamics and synergistic non-covalent interactions driving CSA solubilization. These findings provide mechanistic insights into NADES-based stilbene extraction and support the development of eco-friendly technologies for plant resource utilization.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs)-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), as an efficient extraction method, was used to extract polyphenols from macadamia green peel (MGP). Based on a prediction results of a conductor-like screening model for realistic solvents, 20 DESs were preliminarily selected from 696 DESs for experimental validation, with choline chloride-1,2-butanediol (1,1, molar ratio) exhibiting the highest extraction efficiency. UAE conditions were optimized through response surface methodology experiments, and a total phenolic yield of 91.09 ± 1.15 mg GAE/g DW was obtained. Furthermore, the DES-based MGP phenolic extract was incorporated into chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol films as a plasticizer, resulting in significant changes in physical properties and an increase in antioxidant activity and ultraviolet-blocking properties. Molecular simulations revealed that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions forces the DES-polyphenol interaction. These findings provide a comprehensive strategy for the efficient extraction and functional utilization of MGP polyphenols.

Preparation of eutectic mixture is considered to be an efficient means to improve physical and chemical properties in many fields. In this work, three pesticide-pesticide eutectic systems of boscalid with diniconazole, uniconazole and 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid were prepared by mechanochemical method. The formation of eutectic mixtures was identified by differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffraction characterizations. From the constructed solid–liquid phase diagrams, it is discovered that these eutectic systems could form a eutectic when the molar fraction of boscalid is 0.500. In addition, all eutectic temperatures are more than 29 K lower than the higher melting points of the constituents in the systems, which eliminates the issue of the poor thermal stability of constituents and enables the treatment of them using melting-based operations. Ideal model and COSMO-RS theory also calculate these solid–liquid phase diagrams relatively accurately, and the calculated activity coefficient values prove that these systems do not deviate significantly from the ideal state. The distinct non-ideality at the eutectic composition of the three systems also suggests that the interactions of the three coformers and the boscalid differ. The formation of eutectic mixtures was further confirmed by other solid state characterizations including mid-infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and etc. The accelerated stability test indicates the good stability of the three eutectic mixtures. Furthermore, the water solubility study suggests the boscalid in the eutectic systems has a higher solubility than raw boscalid. By using COSMO-RS modelling, the most typical homo/hetero-molecular complexes of these pesticides were obtained and analyzed. Based on the trend of affinity characterized by the Gibbs free energy of the generation of molecular complexes, it could be inferred that eutectic point could be viewed as the state for which affinity of hetero-molecular complexes is greatest. The affinity of hetero-molecular complexes also presents the interaction between boscalid and 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid is greater than the other two pesticides at the eutectic point. Furthermore, the calculated solvation free energies document the intermolecular interaction plays an important role in stabilizing the three eutectic systems. These eutectic systems solve the problem that the three coformers are unsuitable for melting-based procedures and improve the solubility, making them potential options for future pesticide formulation development.

In this study, vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-LLME) based on hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) was used to efficiently and sustainably extract five phenolic acids and tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) from Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The VA-LLME technique was employed to investigate the extraction mechanism of HDES with the best extraction performance for the target compounds using a conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). An artificial neural network combined with a genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was developed to optimize the extraction conditions based on single-factor and response surface methodology, while also analyzing the interactive effects on the phenolic acids and TMP in the extracted solution during the extraction phase. The optimized conditions were determined, and the greenness of the procedure was evaluated using an analytical greenness metric, indicating that this technique can serve as a green alternative for the determination of phenolic acids and TMP in SAV.

Fingered citron is a pectin-rich citrus resource, but extraction of fingered citron pectin (FCP) using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) remains limited. This study combined conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) prediction with experimental validation to screen NADES for FCP extraction. Thirty-five NADES systems were evaluated using monosaccharides and pectin fragments as molecular models, and five candidates were selected for ultrasound-assisted extraction. Betaine-maltose (Bet-Mal) achieved the highest yield (11.86%), followed by choline chloride-maltose (ChCl-Mal) (9.57%), both higher than water extraction (4.88%). Structural analyses showed that NADES changed the domain composition, molecular size, methyl esterification, surface charge, conformation, and aggregation behavior of FCPs. L-proline-maltose (LP-Mal), Bet-Mal, and choline chloride-fructose (ChCl-Fru) extracted galacturonic acid-rich pectins with high homogalacturonan proportions, whereas glucose-maltose (Glc-Mal) yielded a highly branched rhamnogalacturonan-I-rich fraction with the highest molecular weight (945.2 kDa), largest particle size, and strongest nanoscale aggregation. ChCl-Mal-extracted pectin showed the highest DPPH scavenging activity, while the water-soluble pectin (WSP) had the strongest superoxide anion scavenging activity. The κ-carrageenan composite gels prepared from pectins extracted with different solvents exhibited distinct textural, rheological, thermal, and microstructural characteristics. The LP-Mal-extracted pectin formed the strongest water-retentive gel, with hardness of 1.54 N and water holding capacity of 92.34%, whereas ChCl-Mal and ChCl-Fru showed higher small-deformation viscoelastic moduli. These results provide insight into the solvent-dependent structure–function relationships of FCP and offer a COSMO-RS-guided NADES extraction strategy for obtaining fingered citron pectins with distinct food-related functionalities.

Screening of co-formers for a specific active pharmaceutical ingredient is challenging during the development of multi-component crystals. Taking minoxidil (MIN) as a model drug, this study aims to examine the predictivity of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), Hansen solubility parameter (HSP), and the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) methods. First, CSD analysis based on a supramolecular approach was employed. Then, HSP and COSMO-RS methods were used to predict the cocrystallization possibility between MIN and 27 co-formers, where 10 candidate cases were reported. Based on the predicted results, eight aromatic carboxylic acids formed new solid forms with MIN experimentally, which met the criteria of Δδt < 7 MPa0.5 and ΔHex < −2.00 kcal mol–1, respectively, and four single crystals of these were successfully obtained. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Hirshfeld surface analysis indicated that the proton transferred from co-formers to MIN, and seven new MIN multi-component crystals showed rapid release in the first 30 min (1.52- to 2.91-fold) with improved solubility. This study confirms the efficiency of the CSD method and demonstrates that the COSMO-RS method performs much better than the HSP method.
