Novel CaO2-magnetic biochar for synergistic recovery of inorganic and organic phosphorus from water: Mechanisms and potential for agricultural use

Miaoqu Wang,Chuchu Feng,Jiawei Hou,Kuok Ho Daniel Tang,Tao Sun,Ronghua Li

Recovering phosphorus (P) from wastewater can reduce non-point source pollution and alleviate phosphate fertilizer resource shortage. This study prepared a novel CaO 2 -magnetic biochar (CaMC) from wheat straw via a pyrolysis-precipitation integrated method to capture phytic acid (IP6) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) from solution and livestock wastewater, and its agronomic benefits were tested through wheat pot experiments with microbial community analysis. Maximum capture capacities of CaMC were demonstrated to be 294.2 and 133.1 mg g −1 for Pi (2248.30 mg/L→1512.80 mg/L) and IP6. The pseudo-second-order kinetics, intra-particle diffusion model, and Langmuir model depicted the adsorptive capture process best. Pi was captured mainly through electrostatic attraction and precipitation of Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH and Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 , whereas IP6 removal was first oxidized to Pi via Fenton-like reactions and then adsorbed in the same way as Pi. In addition, the P capture capacity of CaMC reached up to 6.46 mg g −1 in the treatment of real livestock wastewater. Percent adsorption was 27.48% for total P, 22.41% for Pi (76.53 mg/L→59.38 mg/L), and 60.87% for organic P by CaMC. In wheat pot experiments, CaMC-P enhanced both total and available P levels in the soil compared to untreated soil and fertilizer controls. The addition of CaMC-P in soil resulted in a 14% increase in plant dry weight relative to the untreated control. Microbial analysis revealed an increased relative abundance of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms ( Mortierella and Pseudomonas ) in soils treated with CaMC-P. These findings conclude that CaMC is an excellent adsorbent for P recovery in wastewater and for enhancing soil fertility.

Remediation of PNP-contaminated groundwater using a modified CaO2/Fe(II) Fenton system: Reactive principles, degradation performance and potential pathways

Hui Xia,Jungang Guo,Yuesuo Yang,Yuanyuan Wang,Zhongchang Wang,Xin Wang,Wenjing Zhang

Calcium peroxide (CP, CaO 2 ), acting as a source of H 2 O 2 , was combined with Fe(II) to provide a novel modified Fenton system. The removal of p- nitrophenol (PNP) in groundwater as a model pollutant was investigated using this system while addressing effect of reagents on water quality, mechanism of reactive oxygen species formation, possible degradation pathways, impact of geochemistry and process parameters on the removal efficiency. The dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, pH, electrical conductivity and H 2 O 2 concentration in groundwater were all increased significantly due to the addition of CaO 2 and Fe(II), especially in the early stage and under acidic conditions. Within 30 min, 96% of an initial 40 mg/L PNP contamination was removed using the optimum conditions, consisting of 250 mg/L CaO 2 , 50 mg/L Fe(II), an initial pH of 2.6, oscillation frequency of 170 rpm and temperature of 298 K. The batch experiments revealed that the initial pH and the Fe(II) and CaO 2 concentrations all decisively affected removal efficiency, while the groundwater dynamics, temperature and illumination conditions had little effect. The presence of hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, ∙OH quenching experiments indicated that the former rather than the latter played a major role in PNP removal. The generation of 1 O 2 in this system was also predicted by classical molecular orbital theory. These findings would provide useful technical support for the remediation of groundwater contamination .

A dual-oxidant advanced oxidation process system containing CaO2 and peroxymonosulfate for organic pollutant degradation: High adaptability and synergistic effect

Zhiran Hou,Wei Wang,Ningning Dong,Pei Chen,Lifa Ge,Fatang Tan,Xinyun Wang,Xueliang Qiao,Po Keung Wong

In this study, a dual-oxidant advanced oxidation process (AOP) system containing calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was developed for the first time to efficiently degrade refractory organic pollutants . It was found that the system with 0.1 g/L CaO 2 and 0.3 g/L PMS could degrade more than 91% of 50 mg/L tetracycline (TC) within 4 min at room temperature, and the degradation process much followed the pseudo second-order kinetic model. The presented AOP system exhibited strong anti-interference capabilities towards coexisting inorganic anions (Cl − , SO 4 2– , NO 3 – , HCO 3 – and HPO 4 2– ) and humic acid (HA), even at high concentrations. Moreover, the system could efficiently work in a wide pH (3−12) range, suitable for natural waterbodies and various organic pollutants. The results of quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests demonstrated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was the dominate reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for organics degradation. A synergistic mechanism of the dual-oxidant system was confirmed by a series of comparative experiments, where CaO 2 continuously provided OH − and H 2 O 2 , and then combined with PMS to produce predominant 1 O 2 and inferior O 2 •– , respectively. Further, the possible pathways of TC degradation were deduced based on analyses of the intermediates.

Synchronous sequestration of inorganic and organic phosphorus from eutrophic surface water and sediments via recoverable La-CaO2@HNTs/SA hydrogel beads

Chongming Wang,Sujie Shan,Zhengyu Yang,Xinpeng Xu,Xingning Huang,Xi Li,Songqi Liu,Boling Li,Yao Xu,Dapeng Li

Mounting evidence indicates that eliminating phosphate (P i ) alone is not enough to lower outbreak risks of undesirable algae, and synchronously sequestrating organic phosphorus species (OPs) dissolved in overlying water and residing in sediments cannot be ignored. However, more efforts were focused on the immobilization of P i than OPs because of insufficient understanding and analytical challenges. Herein, CaO 2 -loaded halloysite nanotubes/lanthanum-crosslinked sodium alginate (La-CaO 2 @HNTs/SA) hydrogel beads were newly developed and employed as a capping material for efficiently sequestrating P i and OPs from eutrophic water and sediment. Batch sorption results showed that the La-CaO 2 @HNTs/SA has a high uptake capacity towards P i (i.e., 44.05 mg-P/g) and Myo -inositol hexakisphosphate (IHP, a representative pollutant of OPs, 36.28 mg-P/g), and good selectivity for P in the presence of NO 3 – , Cl − , and HCO 3 – , profited by synergy of electrostatic attraction, inner-sphere complexation, surface precipitation, and partial degradation. After applying La-CaO 2 @HNTs/SA, P levels in overlying water could rapidly reduce from 0.95 to 0.01 mg-P/L within 120 min. Further thin-layer capping experiments (60 days) indicated that La-CaO 2 @HNTs/SA performed very well in immobilizing P i and OPs in overlying and pore waters and enhancing reductant-soluble P transformation (BD-P; ∼19 % to 11 %) to more stable HCl-extracted P (HCl-P; ∼33 % to 43 %) in sediments under continuous P input, with minor effect on benthic microorganisms. These findings advance the use of eco-friendly La-CaO 2 @HNTs/SA in eutrophication alleviation via simultaneous sequestration of P i and OPs.

CaO2 nanoparticle-loaded injectable hydrogel with sustained oxygen release and ROS-scavenging functions for accelerating frostbite wound healing at high altitude

Qinsheng Hu,Shiying Lang,Yangrui Du,Hexin Zhou,Miao Liu,Qiao Jin,Kaijun Li,Gongyan Liu

Frostbite is common in high-altitude regions, where low oxygen levels and the cold climate aggravate wound hypoxia and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, making frostbite lesions prone to becoming hard-to-heal wounds. Traditional hydrogel dressings remain unsatisfactory under such extreme conditions, as they lack freezing resistance, low-temperature adhesion, sustained oxygen release, and ROS-scavenging activity. Herein, we report a multifunctional hydrogel for the management of high-altitude frostbite wounds, formed from polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated CaO2 nanoparticles (CPO NPs), polyvinyl alcohol, tannic acid (TA), and glycerol through dynamic hydrogen-bonding interactions. The resulting CPO-PTG hydrogel exhibits injectability, rapid gelation, shape adaptability and self-healing, enabling conformal coverage of irregular frostbite wounds. The inclusion of glycerol endows the hydrogel with excellent antifreezing and water-retention properties, while reinforcing multiple covalent and noncovalent interactions between TA within the hydrogel and wound tissues, resulting in strong adhesion even at −20 °C. TA also contributes strong antibacterial activity, helping prevent wound infection. Notably, the hydrogel network regulates oxygen release from CPO NPs to achieve sustained oxygen delivery for 12 days and, together with the ROS-scavenging activity of TA, promotes cell proliferation and tube formation in vitro under hypoxic conditions. In a rat frostbite-induced hypoxic wound model, CPO-PTG hydrogel accelerates wound healing by reducing inflammation and enhancing angiogenesis. Therefore, this multifunctional hydrogel offers a promising strategy for frostbite wound repair, with potential applicability to other hypoxic wounds in high-altitude settings.

Development of montmorillonite-supported nano CaO2 for enhanced dewatering of waste-activated sludge by synergistic effects of filtration aid and peroxidation

Boran Wu,Lianghu Su,Xiaohu Dai,Xiaoli Chai

Nanosized CaO 2 was first synthesized using montmorillonite clay layers as templates for combining the positive effects of filtration aid and peroxidation on the dewatering of waste-activated sludge (WAS). Exchangeable Ca 2+ compensating for negative charges of montmorillonite reacted with the added H 2 O 2 , affording nano CaO 2 on the surface or in the interlayer regions of montmorillonite (montmorillonite-supported nano CaO 2 , MMT-nano CaO 2 ). The catalytic capacity of montmorillonite for generating OH from nano CaO 2 was verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), therefore, the radical oxidation induced by MMT-nano CaO 2 can destruct the floc structure of WAS with the omission of Fe(II), the conventionally used catalyst for Fenton reaction. As a result, the reduction in specific resistance of filtration (SRF) by 62.2% was achieved with the MMT-nano CaO 2 dosage of 100   mg/g dry solid (DS) and the weakly acidic pH of 5. OH led to the reduction of hydrophilic protein in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and the swelling behavior of montmorillonite contributed to the formation of a porous structure as draining medium for water withdrawing. The above factors were the dominant mechanisms for enhancing dewatering performance.

Insight on the generation of reactive oxygen species in the CaO2/Fe(II) Fenton system and the hydroxyl radical advancing strategy

Yunfei Xue,Qian Sui,Mark L. Brusseau,Xiang Zhang,Zhaofu Qiu,Shuguang Lyu

Calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) is a stable hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) carrier, and the CaO 2 /Fe(II) system has been applied for treatment of various pollutants. It is commonly reported in the literature that hydroxyl radical (HO ) and superoxide radical anions (O 2 − ) are the two main reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generated in the CaO 2 /Fe(II) system. However, many of the reported results were deduced from degradation performance rather than specific testing of radical generation. Thus, the specific generation of ROSs and the influence of system conditions on ROSs yield are still unclear. To our knowledge, this is the first study specifically focusing on the generation of HO and O 2 − in the CaO 2 /Fe(II) system. Experimental conditions were optimized to investigate the production of HO and O 2 − . The results showed the influences of CaO 2 , Fe(II), and solution pH on HO and O 2 − generation, and the HO generation efficiency was reported for the first time. In addition, the ROSs generation pathways in the CaO 2 /Fe(II) system were elucidated. A strategy for enhancing HO yield is developed, based on the continuously dosing Fe(II). This proposed strategy has implications for the effective application of in situ chemical oxidation employing CaO 2 /Fe(II) for groundwater remediation.

Ultrasound-Propelled Janus Rod-Shaped Micromotors for Site-Specific Sonodynamic Thrombolysis

Wenxiong Cao,Yuan Liu,Pan Ran,Jie He,Shuang Xie,Jie Weng,Xiaohong Li

Antithrombosis therapy is confronted with short half-lives of thrombolytic agents, limited therapeutic effects, and bleeding complications. Drug delivery systems of thrombolytic agents face challenges in effective penetration into thrombi, which are characterized by well-organized fibrin filled with abundant activated platelets. Herein, Janus rod (JR)-shaped micromotors are constructed by side-by-side electrospinning and cryosection, possessing advantages in controlling the Janus structure and aspect ratio of microrods. Silicon phthalocyanine (Pc) and CaO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are loaded into the separate sides of JRs, and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptides are grafted on the surface to obtain Pc/Ca@r-JRs for the sonodynamic therapy (SDT) of thrombosis without using any thrombolytic agents. Decomposition of CaO2 NPs ejects O2 bubbles from one side of JRs, and ultrasonication of O2 bubbles produces the cavitation effect, both generating mechanical force to drive the thrombus penetration. The integration of ultrasonication-propelled motion and RGD mediation effectively increases the targeting capabilities of r-JRs to activated platelets. In addition to mechanical thrombolysis, ultrasonication of the released Pc produces 1O2 to destruct fibrin networks of clots. In vitro thrombolysis of whole blood clots shows that ultrasonication of Pc/Ca@r-JRs has a significantly higher thrombolysis rate (73.6%) than those without propelled motion or RGD-mediated clot targeting. In a lower limb thrombosis model, intravenous administration of Pc/Ca@r-JRs indicates 3.4-fold higher accumulations at the clot site than those of JRs, and ultrasonication-propelled motion further increases thrombus retention 2.1 times. Treatment with Pc/Ca@r-JRs and ultrasonication fully removes thrombi and significantly prolongs tail bleeding time. Thus, this study has achieved precise and prompt thrombolysis through selective targeting to clots, efficient penetration into dense networks of thrombi, and SDT-executed thrombolysis.

Oxygen Self-Supplied Nanoplatform for Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy Against Enterococcus Faecalis Within Root Canals

Jiawen Chen,Hong Zhang,Tiancong Zhao,Yiyan Yu,Jiazhuo Song,Yuanhang Zhao,Hamed Alshawwa,Xinying Zou,Zhimin Zhang

The successful treatment of persistent and recurrent endodontic infections hinges upon the eradication of residual microorganisms within the root canal system, which urgently needs novel drugs to deliver potent yet gentle antimicrobial effects. Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising tool for root canal infection management. Nevertheless, the hypoxic microenvironment within the root canal system significantly limits the efficacy of this treatment. Herein, a nanohybrid drug, Ce6/CaO 2 /ZIF-8@PEI, is developed using a bottom-up strategy to self-supply oxygen for enhanced aPDT. Polyethylenimine (PEI) provides a positively charged surface, which enables precise targeting of bacteria. CaO 2 reacts with H 2 O to generate O 2 , which alleviates the hypoxia in the root canal and serves as a substrate for Ce6 under 660 nm laser irradiation, leading to the successful eradication of planktonic Enterococcus faecalis ( E. faecalis) and biofilm in vitro and, moreover, the effective elimination of mature E. faecalis biofilm in situ within the root canal system. This smart design offers a viable alternative for mitigating hypoxia within the root canal system to overcome the restricted efficacy of photosensitizers, providing an exciting prospect for the clinical management of persistent endodontic infection. Degradation of BTEX in groundwater by nano-CaO2 particles activated with L-cysteine chelated Fe(III): enhancing or inhibiting hydroxyl radical generation

Sun Xuecheng,Ali Meesam,Cui Changzheng,Lyu Shuguang

The simultaneous oxidation performance of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) by nanoscale calcium peroxide particles (nCaO 2 ) activated with ferric ions (Fe(III)) and the mechanism of the enhancement of BTEX degradation by L-cysteine (L-cys) were investigated. The batch experimental results showed that the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys process was effective in the destruction of BTEX in both ultrapure water and actual groundwater. A proper amount of L-cys could enhance BTEX degradation due to the promotion of Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycles by the participation of L-cys, but an excessive presence of L-cys would cause inhibition. Adding 1.0 mM L-cys to the nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system, the concentration of Fe(II) increased to 1.15 mM instantly. Simultaneously, the yield of HO• produced by the 1.0 mM L-cys-containing system was 0.066 mM at 180 min reaction, higher than that without L-cys (0.049 mM). When excess L-cys (5.0 mM) was added to the system, the amount of Fe(II) increased to 3.73 mM because excessive L-cys caused a large amount of Fe(III) in the system to be reduced. However, the yield of HO• decreased to 0.043 mM since excessive Fe(II) could conversely scavenge HO• to produce Fe(III) again. EPR tests and quenching results indicated that HO• was the dominant reactive species in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. For the removal of BTEX, the optimal molar ratio of nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys was 10.5/20/1 based on calculation by response surface methodology (RSM). Finally, the BTEX destruction pathway was proposed according to the detected intermediates by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). nCaO 2 /Fe(III) system with L-cysteine (L-cys) was applied to remediate mixed contaminants. A suitable amount of L-cys promoted redox cycling (Fe(III) → Fe(II)). The mechanism of enhancing or inhibiting hydroxyl radical generation was investigated. Proposed BTEX destruction pathway in the nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system. nCaO 2 /Fe(III)/L-cys system was recommended for BTEX-contaminated actual groundwater remediation.

A smart O2-generating nanocarrier optimizes drug transportation comprehensively for chemotherapy improving

Xiaojuan Zhang,Chuanchuan He,Yun Sun,Xiaoguang Liu,Yan Chen,Chen Chen,Ruicong Yan,Ting Fan,Tan Yang,Yao Lu,Jun Luo,Xiang Ma,Guangya Xiang

Drug transportation is impeded by various barriers in the hypoxic solid tumor, resulting in compromised anticancer efficacy. Herein, a solid lipid monostearin (MS)-coated CaO 2 /MnO 2 nanocarrier was designed to optimize doxorubicin (DOX) transportation comprehensively for chemotherapy enhancement. The MS shell of nanoparticles could be destroyed selectively by highly-expressed lipase within cancer cells, exposing water-sensitive cores to release DOX and produce O 2 . After the cancer cell death, the core-exposed nanoparticles could be further liberated and continue to react with water in the tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) and thoroughly release O 2 and DOX, which exhibited cytotoxicity to neighboring cells. Small DOX molecules could readily diffuse through ECM, in which the collagen deposition was decreased by O 2 -mediated hypoxia-inducible factor-1 inhibition, leading to synergistically improved drug penetration. Concurrently, DOX-efflux-associated P-glycoprotein was also inhibited by O 2 , prolonging drug retention in cancer cells. Overall, the DOX transporting processes from nanoparticles to deep tumor cells including drug release, penetration, and retention were optimized comprehensively, which significantly boosted antitumor benefits.

Trace-Cu(II)/CaO2 pre-oxidation coupled with coagulation for algal elimination: A triple-mechanism cascade involving functional inactivation driven by Cu(III)

Dingqiang Zhang,Xiaoqun Wu,Tengchao Jiao,Weizhen Zhang,Jiahao He,Yanhua Xie,Yingming Hu,Yao Wei

Trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 /PAC achieves > 95% algal removal in natural waters. • Pre-oxidation degrades algal extracellular matter to aid coagulation. • PAC mitigates matrix interference, indirectly maintaining oxidation. • Intracellular ROS induces functional death without severe lysis. Harmful algal blooms release microcystins and other metabolites that threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. Conventional removal methods often induce cell lysis and are affected by matrix interference in natural waters, limiting their practical applicability. A sequential process coupling trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 pre-oxidation with PAC coagulation was developed for efficient algal removal. The system removed 98.5% of M. aeruginosa from lake water. During the 10-min pre-oxidation stage, trace-Cu(II)/CaO 2 effectively degraded extracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and the dissolved organic matter (DOM) surrounding algal cells, thereby weakening electrostatic repulsion and enhancing coagulation efficiency. The coupled process generated Cu(III), •OH, •O 2 − , and 1 O 2 within the cells, which led to functional cell death without severe membrane rupture. Conventional molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirmed the stability of a representative pentameric cation-channel model, and steered molecular dynamics (SMD) further showed that Cu 2+ and H 2 O 2 could be guided through its pore under an applied axial bias, supporting the physical plausibility of channel-mediated intracellular access. Mechanistically, OH − generated during CaO 2 hydrolysis promoted the Cu(II)/Cu(I)/Cu(III) catalytic cycle and sustained reactive species production, with Cu(III) as the dominant contributor to functional inactivation (68.5%). These findings establish an innovative and practical strategy for the safe and effective removal of algae from contaminated natural waters.
