Carbendazim is widely used as a fungicide in various crops, but its residues might pose a threat to human health and environmental safety. It is significantly expected to develop a simple, sensitive, stable, and on-site method for detecting carbendazim. In this work, the first organic fluorescent sensor for carbendazim was designed and synthesized based on a crown ether-bridging tetra-cyanostilbene macrocycle. This macrocycle exhibited dark-blue fluorescence in THF–H 2 O (5:95) solution, which was transformed into bright-blue fluorescence after sensing carbendazim. High sensing selectivity for carbendazim was observed among 24 kinds of pesticides and ions. The detection limit was as low as 4.22 × 10 –8 M. The sensing mechanism was deduced as two carbendazim molecules being encapsulated in the macrocyclic cavity based on multiple hydrogen bonds, π–π stacking, and hydrophobic action, resulting in stronger rotation restriction of aromatic groups and then higher fluorescence emission. The sensing application on test paper, real samples, and simulated water samples indicated excellent qualitative and quantitative detecting capabilities for sensing carbendazim, implying a good application prospect for simple, sensitive, stable, and on-site detection of carbendazim in daily life.

Due to the excessive use of fungicides, pesticide residues have become a growing concern in recent years. Herein, we demonstrated an easy-prepared and low-cost surface enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) chip composed of 3D silver microspheres (AgMSs) pattern for the quantitative testing of carbendazim in Chinese tea. Compared with the common monolayer SERS substrate, the 3D patterns formed by self-assembly AgMSs with fine nanostructure can offer much more aggregation-induced hotspots and generate strong 3D synergetic effects. Furthermore, when the thickness of the 3D pattern exceeded 6 μm, we replaced the conductive supporting coatings using the glass slides to reduce the cost without any impact on SERS properties. The prepared 3D chips achieved the determination of carbendazim within the linear range of 0.1–10 mg/L and the detection limit of 0.01 mg/L. It is simple and sensitive enough for the detection of most pesticide residues or other harmful organic molecules in our food or environment.

A ratiometric fluorescent sensor was facilely fabricated using innate fluorescence of carbendazim (MBC) and fluorescent UiO-67 to sensitively and selectively detect MBC in food matrixes. The innate fluorescence of MBC provided a signal at 311 nm (F 311 ), and the fluorescent UiO-67 at 408 nm (F 408 ) could recognize MBC through π-π stacking inducing fluorescent quenching relied on photoelectron transfer (PET). The ratio (F 311 /F 408 ) of the fluorescence enhancement of MBC and the quenching of UiO-67 linearly responded to the MBC concentrations of 0–47.6 μmol/L with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.0 × 10 −3 μmol/L. The reverse response signals of the sensor enhanced the sensitivity toward MBC and presented remarkable anti-interference capability in complex matrices. The as-prepared sensor was applied to detect MBC residues in apple, cucumber and cabbage, obtaining satisfactory accuracy and precision with the recovery of 90.82–103.45% and RSDs of lower than 3.03%.

The β-cyclodextrin-acrylamide (CDM-AM) copolymer was prepared from acrylamide and β-CD maleate (CDM) using K 2 S 2 O 8 as initiator. The effects of the CDM-AM copolymer on the solubility and fungicidal activity of natamycin (NM) and carbendazim (MBC) were investigated. The stability constant of NM·CDM-AM and MBC·CDM-AM complexes at 303 K were of 10,725.45 M −1 and 3000.89 M −1 , respectively. The complexes were characterized using phase solubility diagrams, NMR spectra and FT-IR spectra. The analysis of the biological activities of these two complexes indicated that they possessed enhancing fungicidal activities compared to NM and MBC alone.

In order to achieve rapid and precise quantification detection of carbendazim residues, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with variable selected regression methods were developed. A higher sensitivity and greater density of “hot spots” in three-dimensional (3D) SERS substrates based on silver nanoparticles compound polyacrylonitrile (Ag-NPs @PAN) nanohump arrays were fabricated to capture and amplify the SERS signal of carbendazim. Four Raman spectral variable selection regression models were established and comparatively assessed. The results showed that the bootstrapping soft shrinkage-partial least squares (BOSS-PLS) method achieved the best predictive capacity after variable selection, and the final BOSS-PLS model has the correlation coefficient (RP) of 0.992. Then, this method used to detect the carbendazim residue in apple samples; the recoveries were 86~116%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) is less than 10%. The 3D SERS substrates combined with the BOSS-PLS algorithm can deliver a simple and accurate method for trace detection of carbendazim residues in apples.Keywords:apple;carbendazim;surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS);Ag-NPs @PAN-nanohump arrays;bootstrapping soft shrinkage-partial least squares (BOSS-PLS)

Carbendazim (CBZ), a broad-spectrum benzimidazole fungicide, is widely detected in agricultural environments, raising concerns about its potential toxicity to organisms. However, the specific molecular mechanisms, particularly the genetic regulators and downstream metabolic effectors, that drive this disruption are still poorly defined. Combining targeted genetic analysis in Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) with non-targeted lipidomics, we demonstrate that CBZ induces substantial lipid accumulation and 1 μg/L CBZ performed at the most by evaluating the Oil Red O staining, triglyceride (TG) and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA). Targeted genetic analysis and transcriptional analysis uncovered that this metabolic disruption requires the insulin-like receptor daf-2 and aak-2 , and further CBZ specifically and consistently upregulates the Δ9-desaturases, most prominently fat-6 and fat-7 , identifying them as the key effector enzymes. Moreover, untargeted lipidomic revealed that this was characterized by triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation and a significant enrichment in glycerophospholipid metabolism. Integrated correlation analysis further mapped these key lipid species to two antagonistic transcriptional programs, including a catabolic state linked to atgl-1 and an anabolic state linked to the fat-6 and fat-7 . This study elucidates a novel pathway for fungicide-induced metabolic dysfunction, demonstrating how CBZ hijacks the host metabolic network to drive fat storage through specific desaturase-dependent reprogramming, with potential implications for environmental and human health risk assessment.

Nylon shrinkage effect generates dense SERS hotspots. • Ultrahigh sensitivity, achieving a detection limit of 10 −9 M for the probe molecule R6G. • Excellent uniformity and reproducibility, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.14% across 50 random spots. • Superior long-term stability, retaining 89.23% of the initial SERS signal after 30 days of storage. • Paste-and-peel method for in-situ CBZ detection on fruit. To address the widespread issue of carbendazim (CBZ), a common pesticide residue, on the surfaces of fruits and vegetables, our research team prepared silver nanoparticles using the sodium citrate reduction method and successfully loaded them onto a nylon membrane substrate via vacuum-assisted filtration. Subsequently, the substrate was modified with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as an internal standard signaling molecule, yielding a Nylon-Ag@4MBA flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate. The as-prepared Nylon-Ag@4MBA substrate exhibited excellent uniformity (RSD = 5.14%), a detection limit as low as 10 −9 M for the R6G probe molecule, and a signal retention rate of 89.23% after 30 days of storage. In the detection of actual samples such as apples, the recovery rates of CBZ ranged from 95.05% to 96.90% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 4.07%, demonstrating reliable quantitative capability. No interference was observed from common substances on the fruit peel. This study confirms the potential application of the Nylon-Ag@4MBA substrate for the on-site rapid detection of pesticide residues. Detecting carbendazim (CBZ) poses a significant challenge, which underscores the urgency for reliable monitoring methods. To address this, we have developed a high-performance electrochemical sensor to detect CBZ. This sensor achieves this through the integration of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD, for selective adsorption) and zinc-cobalt layered double hydroxides (ZnCo-LDHs, for efficient catalysis and electron transfer). Comprehensive characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a synergistic effect. The adsorption energy of CBZ by β-CD is 3.4 times higher than that by ZnCo-LDHs, thereby enabling targeted enrichment. ZnCo-LDHs reduces the electrode charge transfer resistance by 2.69 times to enhance electron transfer. This sensor achieves a wide linear response (0.005–1 mg/L), a detection limit of 0.35 μg/L, and a quantitative limit of 1.17 μg/L. It also exhibits a high sensitivity of 111.99 μA·μM⁻¹ ·cm⁻², along with excellent selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. The recovery rates in tap water, river water, and groundwater range from 94.50 % to 105.22 % (RSD≤8.20 %). Comparison with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis confirmed its reliability. This work provides a powerful platform for rapid, on-site pesticide monitoring in aquatic environments, offering a viable strategy to mitigate contamination risks and advance sustainable environmental management.

The overuse of pesticides poses a significant threat to human health, driving the need for accurate and rapid strategies to identify various pesticides. A fluorescent nano-sensor (R-AuNCs@Aptamer) was developed by integrating an amino-modified carbendazim aptamer with red-colored gold nanoclusters (R-AuNCs). We subsequently engineered an aptamer-triggered turn-off-on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platform, employing R-AuNCs@Aptamer in conjunction with tungsten disulfide nanosheets (WS 2 NS). In this setup, the carbendazim aptamer-stabilized red-emitting R-AuNCs (∼655 nm) served as the energy donor, while WS 2 NS acted as a fluorescence quencher. Upon the introduction of carbendazim, alterations in fluorescence intensity were monitored at 655 nm, facilitating the recognition of carbendazim. The resulting fluorescent nano-sensor displayed outstanding selectivity towards carbendazim, exhibiting a broad detection range of 0.1 to 1000 μg/L and remarkable sensitivity with a low limit of detection. It demonstrated reliability and practicality when applied to Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma samples, with recoveries ranging from 90 % to 110 %. By changing the aptamer sequence, this sensor can be customized to detect different pollutants, exhibiting excellent tailorability and broad application potential.

As two commonly used fungicides, carbendazim and tebuconazole are widely found in the environment and in foods. Studies have reported that these fungicides can induce hepatic oxidative stress and other health risks. Nevertheless, the influences of exposure to carbendazim and tebuconazole at their acceptable daily intake (ADI) doses on hepatic oxidative stress, and the residual distributions in mice remain unclear. To fill these gaps, ICR (CD-1) mice were exposed to carbendazim and tebuconazole at their ADI doses by oral administration for 4 weeks in this study. The results showed that tebuconazole accumulated primarily in the epididymal fat of mice (16.84 μg/kg), whereas no significant residues of carbendazim in the tissues were observed. In addition, exposure to ADI doses of tebuconazole significantly reduced liver coefficients and induced hepatic oxidative stress in mice, including elevating the levels of glutathione and malonaldehyde. However, no significant impacts were observed on the hepatic redox homeostasis in mice after exposure to carbendazim at its ADI dose. The results could be helpful for understanding the exposure risks of carbendazim and tebuconazole in terms of low doses and long term. Keywords:carbendazim;tebuconazole;residue;oxidative stress;acceptable daily intake

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing has been extensively studied for hazardous material (e.g., pesticide residue) detection, with investigation on photoactive materials being their main focus of study. Herein, a cascade Z-scheme [email protected] 2 ( [email protected] 2 ) heterostructure was designed to fabricate a PEC aptasensor for carbendazim (CBZ) detection in tomato. The [email protected] 2 heterostructure was prepared by taking advantage of electrostatic adsorption between components. The cascade Z-scheme electron transfer was verified in [email protected] 2 , resulting in a significantly enlarged photocurrent (e.g., 2.7-fold higher of that at CdTe/MoS 2 ) for the efficient separation of electron-hole pair. The PEC aptasensor was developed based on the principle that the specific binding of aptamer to target on the surface of [email protected] 2 increased the steric hindrance for electron transfer, facilitating a “signal-off” detection mode for CBZ. The fabricated aptasensor offered a linear range of 0.523–5230 nM (0.1–100 ng mL −1 ) with a detection limit of 1.74 × 10 -10 M (0.033 ng mL −1 ) for CBZ detection, and it was successfully applied to tomato sample analysis. This work will stimulate exploration of cascade Z-scheme materials for sensing, and provides a high-performance PEC sensing platform for the detection of various species.

To overcome limitations with respect to the low sensitivity of rapid immunoassay methods due to dilution of the extract in extraction solution, ultra-sensitive antibodies are needed. The linker-tethering site between the target and carrier protein , the length of the spacer arm , and the atomic charge of the linker-tethering site between the target and spacer arm in haptens design play a pivotal role in the preparation of ultra-sensitive antibodies. In this study, carbendazim (CBZ), a systemic broad-spectrum fungicidal pesticide, was used as model compound. 2-Aminobenzimidazole was chosen as the common skeletal structure and reacted with different groups, such as alkanes and urine groups, to form haptens H1 (previously reported), H2 (novel), and H3 (novel), respectively. Subsequently, eight monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were generated using these three haptens , which exhibited notable variation in sensitivity. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) value of mAb 4B11 based on hapten H3 against CBZ was 0.04 ng/mL, which was seven times better than that of mAb 5B10 (IC 50 value of 0.28 ng/mL) prepared using hapten H2 and 129 times better than that of mAb 6D5 (IC 50 value of 5.15 ng/mL) prepared using hapten H1. Finally, the optimal antigen–antibody combination was employed to establish a sensitive colloidal gold lateral flow immunoassay (CG-LFA) for CBZ detection in vegetables and fruits with convenient sample pretreatment . The developed CG-LFA shows promising practical utility and prospects for application due to its low limit of detection (0.10–0.18 ng/mL) and high recovery ratios (76.0%–96.1%) in six different samples.
