Oxygen vacancies and Lewis sites activating O3/H2O2 at wide pH range via surface electron transfer over CeOx@SiO2 for nitrobenzene mineralization

Weirui Chen,Jinxin Xie,Xukai Li,Laisheng Li

The low efficiency of peroxone (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) at acidic and neutral pH restrained its application in water purification . To overcome this shortcoming, CeO X @SiO 2 with large surface area, abundant surface oxygen vacancies (V o ), Lewis sites (L sites) and high Ce(III)/Ce(IV) ratio were synthesized to change the traditional electron transfer pathway between O 3 and H 2 O 2 . V o was facile in absorbing H 2 O 2 to form V o -H 2 O 2 and L sites were capable of absorbing O 3 to form L-O 3 . The electron at V o could be donated to V o -H 2 O 2 and generate V o -HO 2 − , which then effectively triggered the decomposition of L-O 3 at CeO X @SiO 2 ’s interface and O 3 in bulk solution. The electron transfer at the solid-liquid interface with the help of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox cycle and V o was pH independent and different from the traditional electron transfer of peroxone reaction. Nitrobenzene (NB) mineralization was promoted to 92.5% in CeO X @SiO 2 -peroxone, but only 63.8% TOC was removed in tradition peroxone process. Moreover, CeO X @SiO 2 -peroxone had a wide pH application range. NB’s degradation in CeO X @SiO 2 -peroxone process followed the co-oxidation mechanism of superoxide free (•O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). The finding of this study could broaden the popularization of peroxone in water treatment and provided a strategy for catalyst design.

Promotion effect of Cr addition on the activity and SO2 tolerance of CeOx catalysts for the NH3-SCR at middle-low temperature

Longyi Xue,Ninghan Wei,Cheng Zhao,Xiaomei Hu,Junge Yun,Zimo Chen,Zhiyi Deng,Zhihang Chen

CeO 2 as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst has attracted wide attention due to its abundant surface acidity and excellent oxygen storage/release capacity. However, its further implication was hindered owing to insufficient catalytic activity and SO 2 resistance. Novel Cr doped CeO x catalysts were synthesized by solid phase method and used for NH 3 -SCR of NO x at middle-low temperature. The effect of Cr addition on the SCR performance and physicochemical properties of CeO 2 catalyst was investigated by activity test and characterizations. Among the tested catalysts, Cr(0.4)-CeO x catalyst exhibited excellent NO x removal efficiency, with >90% NO conversion within 180–300 °C, 100% NO conversion at 220 °C and outstanding SO 2 resistance at 240 °C under 100 or 600 ppm SO 2 . The characterizations results revealed that Cr modified CrCeO x catalyst could effectively increase BET surface area, pore volume, surface acidity and redox capacity. In situ DRIFTS indicated that SCR reactions over Cr(0.4)-CeO x catalyst followed Eley-Rideal mechanism and active –NH 2 was the major intermediate species. After sulfuration, Cr(0.4)-CeO x still exhibited excellent SCR activity due to the increase of Cr 6+ , Ce 3+ and O α concentration and the formation of Cr–O–Ce bond, new Brønsted acid site and more crystallized Cr 2 O 3 .

In-situ construction of CeOx/TiO2 heterostructure for synergistically enhancing anti-corrosion and antibacterial properties of micro-arc oxidation coating on pure titanium

Ansheng Cheng,Xumin Zhang,Huie Hu,Hao Wang,Mao Zhang,Zichun Yang

An in-situ CeO x /TiO 2 heterostructured MAO coating was constructed. • Ce incorporation promoted pore sealing and coating densification. • The optimized coating achieved corrosion current density of 4.29 × 10 -9 A/cm 2 . • Antibacterial rate exceeded 90% via Ce release and ROS generation. • Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox induced charge redistribution and bandgap narrowing. Under marine service environments, titanium is facing dual threats of corrosion and microbial contamination. In this study, a CeO x nanocluster-modified TiO 2 is constructed on pure titanium via Micro-arc Oxidation technology with in-situ cerium salt introduction to control plasma discharge characteristics. It is found that the coating porosity with optimal Ce concentration is just 2.29%, and the thickness increases to 22.25 μm. The electrochemical testing reveals that the coating’s corrosion current density drops to 4.29 × 10 -9 A/cm 2 , and the charge transfer resistance reaches 3.78 × 10 6 Ω∙cm 2 , which still maintains a stable capacitive response after 14 days. This result is attributed to the combined effects of structural densification and electronic regulation at heterogeneous interfaces. Meanwhile, the antibacterial rates of the coating against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus reach 91.25% and 82.56%. According to experimental characterization and calculation of Density Functional Theory, it is confirmed that the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox pair not only drives redistribution of interface electrons, but also effectively reduces activation energy barrier of oxygen radicals, realizing efficient antibacterial activity through synergistic effect of the Ce x+ ion release and accelerated generation of Reactive Oxygen Species. Hence, this study provides a theoretical basis for designing rare-earth-modified multifunctional marine protective coatings. Spatially orthogonal CeOx-Zn sites on diatomite-aerogel-derived hierarchical HZSM-5 enable gated dechlorination and BTX-selective upcycling of PVC/PET mixed plastics

Jie Li,Yuxiang Yang,Guangtong Xu,Xiangxu Du,Anbang Dai,Yangchuan Ke

Spatially orthogonal CeO x –Zn sites were integrated into aerogel-derived hierarchical HZSM-5. • CeO x shifted HCl release and chlorinated-intermediate conversion to lower temperatures. • Zn promoted BTX-selective aromatization of dechlorinated and oxygenated fragments. • Accessibility-weighted bifunctional catalysis enabled cleaner and higher-value PVC/PET upcycling. Catalytic upcycling of chlorine-containing mixed plastics remains limited by the intrinsic conflict between efficient dechlorination and high-selectivity aromatization. Here we report a spatially orthogonal CeO x –Zn/Aero-40 catalyst derived from a diatomite-aerogel-templated hierarchical HZSM-5 support, in which CeO x -rich outer mesopores and Zn-containing MFI channels are integrated into a gated tandem architecture. The hierarchized support decreased the mean particle size from 386 ± 42 nm for Conv-40–274 ± 31 nm for Aero-40 and retained a shortened crystallite length of 289 ± 24 nm after dual-site loading, while exposing 3.01 wt% surface Ce and 1.86 wt% surface Zn on CeO x –Zn/Aero-40. Under the optimized two-stage conditions, CeO x -Zn/Aero-40 affords a BTX yield of 64.0 wt% on the initial dry-polymer feed basis, a BTX selectivity of 90.0% within the quantified liquid aromatics, and a dechlorination efficiency of 98.9%. Product-family analysis showed that aromatics rose to 71% whereas organochlorines fell to 2%; chlorine balance further demonstrated that 88% of chlorine was released as gaseous HCl, with only 3% remaining as oil-phase organochlorine. Taken together, the time-resolved spectroscopic/thermal analyses, probe experiments and kinetic measurements are consistent with a functionally staged mechanism in which Ce-associated sites facilitate low-temperature HCl elimination and chlorine management, whereas Zn-associated acid environments favor downstream cyclization/dehydrogenation-aromatization toward BTX. The DFT calculations support the intrinsic feasibility of these site-specific elementary steps but do not, by themselves, establish dynamic inter-site kinetic coupling. Across ten independent parallel runs, the mean BTX yield was 63.9 wt% of the initial dry polymer feed (RSD 1.0%), while the mean dechlorination efficiency was 98.8% (RSD 0.2%), retained 96.3% Zn after five cycles, and maintained high dechlorination efficiency for model and real feeds. These results establish a hierarchical dual-site zeolite platform for chlorine-tolerant aromatics-oriented upcycling of PVC/PET mixed plastics. Morphological and optical evolution of metallic oxide/Au nanoparticle hybrid thin film: High absorption and reflectance by plasmonic enhancement

Sui Mao,Jiliang Liu,Yuyong Pan,Jihoon Lee,Zhao Yao,Puran Pandey,Sundar Kunwar,Zhijun Zhu,Wenfei Shen,Laurence A. Belfiore,Jianguo Tang

Hybrid metal-oxide (MO)/metal nanostructures (MNSs) have been appealing in widespread optoelectronic devices due to their strong and tunable plasmonic activity encompassing selective scattering and absorption of wavelength depending upon the surface morphology and surrounding dielectric environment. In this paper, the various MO/Au NSs hybrid thin-films are fabricated via the solid-state-dewetting growth of Au NSs and sol-gel deposition of MO top-layers including ZrO x , CeO x , YO x and AlO x . Over 450% enhancements in maximum absorption are observed along with the peak redshift of 168 nm for the series of MO/Au NS films. The overall plasmonic properties undergo three regimes by the systematical control of film morphology: (I) Rapid enhancement, (II) Slow enhancement and (III) Decay. The optical evolution is correspondingly investigated with the assistant of finite-different time-domain (FDTD) calculation. This work may give an aid to the photo-electronic applications, such as photovoltaics , sensing and surface enhanced Raman scattering , based on hybrid MNSs especially on control of their plasmonic properties.

Synergistic Cu/CeO2 carbon nanofiber catalysts for efficient CO2 electroreduction

Xin Zong,Jie Zhang,Jinqiu Zhang,Wen Luo,Andreas Züttel,Yueping Xiong

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 RR) has attracted enormous interest because of the energy crisis and climate change; however, more efficient catalysts are required for practical applications. Herein, we present electrospinning as a facile strategy to synthesize a three-dimensional network of carbon nanofibers embedded with Cu and CeO x nanoparticles (Cu/CeO x @CNFs) as a CO 2 RR catalyst. The Cu–CeO x interface produced using this method offers synergistic geometric and electronic effects which optimize the adsorption strength of reaction intermediates for the electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. In a flow cell configuration, a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and a CO faradaic efficiency of 59.2% can be obtained at −0.60 V vs. RHE.
