Hierarchical structure Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels with intelligent electromagnetic wave absorption

Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin,Yongzhen Ma,Luyao Han,Zhixin Cai,Yan Cheng,Qibin Yuan,Wenhuan Huang,Haibo Yang,Renchao Che

Developing intelligent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials with real-time response-ability is of great significance in complex application environments. Herein, highly compressible Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels were assembled through the electrospinning method, achieving EMW absorption through pressure changes. By varying the pressure, the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels shows continuous changes from low frequency to high frequency. The EAB of Fe@CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogels is 14.4 GHz (3.36–17.76 GHz), which covers 90% of the range of S/C/X/Ku bands. The theoretical simulation indicates that the external pressure prompts a reduction in the spacing between the fiber layers in the aerogels and facilitates the formation of a 3D conductive network with enhanced attenuation ability of EMW. The uniform distribution of metal particles and appropriate layer spacing can effectively optimize the impedance matching to achieve the best EMW absorption performance. This work state clearly that the hierarchically assembled elastic aerogels composed of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives and carbon fibers are ideal dynamic EMW absorption materials for intelligent EMW response.

Construction of dandelion–like FeCo/Co@C composites with improved microwave absorption performance

Chen Yuxiao,Jiang Yongle,Gan Fangyu,Zhong Yan,Yao Qingrong,Cheng Lichun,Lu Zhao,Qin Haiqing,Wang Jiang,Huang Yuxuan

Microwave absorption materials can achieve superior performance through the implementation of effective strategies such as morphology and composition design. In this study, a straightforward hydrothermal approach was employed to synthesize FeCo/Co@C composites with a dandelion-like morphology. Subsequently, the investigation focused on systematically examining the influence of carbon content and pyrolysis temperature on the microstructure, phase composition, and microwave absorption performance. The findings indicate that at a glucose of 3 mmol and pyrolysis temperature of 700 ℃, FCC2 exhibit a significant reflection loss (RL) of –51.13 dB, accomplished through the utilization of an exceptionally slim matching thickness measuring only 1.4 mm, additionally, optimal effectiveness across a bandwidth of 5.0 GHz can be attained at 1.5 mm. The remarkable ability of FCC2 samples to absorb microwaves can be credited to the distinctive structure resembling a dandelion and precise matching of magneto-dielectric elements. Consequently, these FeCo/Co@C composites show great potential as lightweight, high-performance microwave absorbers, offering a simple and efficient strategy for designing broadband absorption materials.

Co/C Nanoparticle-Embedded Carbon Aerogels for Lightweight and High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Zhang Chenyuan,Li Jun,Liang Zhenjie,Wang Yingke,Lin Xuecheng,Jin Hongdu,He Dan,Wang Zhifeng,Chen Minrui,Wen Hui-Min,Hu Jun

The development of lightweight, broadband, and high-efficiency electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials requires both strong attenuation and effective impedance matching. To address this challenge, ZIF-67 was introduced into a resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol–gel system and carbonized at 600–800 ° C to construct nanoscale Co/C nanoparticle-embedded carbon aerogels (Co/C-CA). The resulting Co/C-CA composites contain ZIF-67-derived nanoscale Co/C nanoparticles anchored within a hierarchical porous carbon aerogel network, which helps preserve the three-dimensional skeleton and creates magnetic-dielectric interfaces. The optimized Co/C-CA-700 composite exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −60.9 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.34 GHz. The improved absorption is attributed to balanced impedance matching, interfacial polarization, dipole relaxation, magnetic resonance, and conductive loss regulated by carbonization temperature, together with cross-scale coupling between nanoscale Co/C units and the carbon aerogel framework. This work provides a structure-oriented strategy for lightweight and broadband EMW absorption.

Lightweight rigid MWCNT/Co@C/rGO/PMI composite foam achieves broadband electromagnetic wave absorption

Li Xiongbin,Zhou Yuqiao,Tang Xiu-Zhi,Zhang Hong,Li Hengfeng

The aerospace, military stealth, and 5G communication fields have raised new requirements for multifunctional materials. In this study, a rigid MWCNT/Co@C/rGO/PMI composite foam (MCGP) was prepared using a UV light-initiated in-situ copolymerization hot air foaming method. The sandwich structure of MOF-GO-MOF, after calcination, achieved a uniform dispersion of magnetic Co particles and formed rich hetero interfaces. The 0D Co@C, 1D MWCNT, and 2D rGO formed a multi-dimensional filler system, and the magnetic-electrical synergy and isotropy bubble structure jointly optimized the impedance matching, and multiple loss mechanisms enhanced the absorbing performance. The results showed that M20C20/PMI achieved a RL value of -68.26 dB at a frequency of 8.92 GHz and a thickness of 40mm, and the EAB covered the full frequency band of 2—18 GHz. The RCS value of M25C15/PMI reached a minimum of -45.82 dB·m 2 . Notably, by carefully adjusting the proportion of fillers, the five MCGP composite foams prepared in this study all had a minimum RL value of < -55 dB, basically meeting the requirements of each absorption frequency band. In addition, the MCGP composite foams are lightweight (28.30 kg/m 3 ), have high strength (0.50 MPa), heat insulation (0.02856 W/(m·K)), and infrared stealth characteristics, making them promising as a new generation of integrated structural–functional protective materials.

Design of Fe/Co-N doped porous carbon sheets by hard template strategy as an oxygen reduction catalyst for Mg-air batteries

Kun Liu,Yujing Ling,Xianglong Guan,Ke Hu,Angli Zhang,Kaiqi Liu,Haoyi Li,Guangnian Xu,Xu-Cheng Fu

The commercialization of magnesia-air batteries (Mg-air) necessitates the development of highly efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), replacing expensive and unstable precious metal electrocatalysts. A hard template-assisted synthesis of FeCo nanoparticles immobilized on N-doped porous carbon (Fe-Co-C-N) for the ORR is reported. The half-wave potential of Fe-Co-C-N for ORR (E1/2=0.88 V vs. RHE) is elevated by 40 mV compared to that of 20 wt% Pt/C (E1/2=0.84 vs. RHE). The catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance and remarkable stability. The discharge voltage of the Mg-air battery, utilizing Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst (1.29 V), surpasses that of the battery employing 20 wt% Pt/C as the cathode catalyst (1.28 V). The Mg-air battery with Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst exhibited excellent discharge stability and maintained a stable discharge for over 200 hours. The present study offers valuable insights into the structural design and regulatory mechanisms governing the performance of M-N-C catalysts in Mg-air batteries.

Boosting aromatic monomer yield of lignin hydrogenolysis by using Co/C coupled with NaOH catalyst

Ying Xu,Dongling Wang,Bowen Luo,Xiaodong Zhang,Yuanbo Huang,Huanghuang Zhuang,Riyang Shu

An efficient hydrogenolysis for organosolv lignin was proposed by using Co/C coupled with NaOH catalyst in this work. A boosted aromatic monomer yield was achieved, which was superior to the noble metal-based catalysts. The optimal 15%Co/C catalyst coupled with NaOH exhibited the best hydrogenolysis performance, with lignin conversion of 94.5 % and aromatic monomers yield of 43.4 %. Wherein, the product of benzyl alcohols showed the highest yield 23.5 %. The recycling performance of 15%Co/C catalyst was outstanding, with lignin conversion above 92.8 % after three runs and the yield of aromatic monomer slightly dropped to 38 %. The hydrogenolysis reaction pathway was also investigated based on the β-O-4 dimer model compound study. 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenyl ethanol was selected as lignin β-O-4 dimer model compound, and the hydrogenolysis reaction was conducted efficiently at 160 °C under the synergistic catalysis effect of metal sites and base sites. NaOH promoted the initial depolymerization of lignin through protonation, which improved the accessibility of lignin product to Co/C catalyst, and thus enhanced the reactivity of catalytic hydrogenolysis. NaOH also facilitated the etherification of intermediate products with solvents. And the presence of Co metal site stabilized free radicals and inhibited monomer product etherification. This catalytic system provides a potential strategy for the large-scale lignin utilization, with the advantage of high efficiency and handleability.

MOF-derived CNFs@Co/C fibers with adjustable cavity size for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin,Yongzhen Ma,Zhao Meng,Keyuan Cheng,Haibo Yang

Multi-component design for constructing heterogeneous interfaces has emerged as a key strategy to optimize electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. However, precise structural control during heterogeneous interface construction remains a significant challenge. In this study, CNFs@Co/C fibers with tunable cavity size were prepared by coaxial electrospinning and heat treatment. Abundant heterogeneous interfaces between CNFs and metallic Co particles significantly enhance interfacial polarization. The impedance matching of CNFs@Co/C fibers can be effectively tuned by regulating the cavity size. Optimized impedance matching helps more EMWs enter the material and be lost. The results demonstrate that CNFs@Co/C fibers with an appropriate cavity size exhibit outstanding EMW absorption capabilities, attaining a maximum reflection loss of −56.63 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.84 GHz. Furthermore, the radar stealth performance of the samples was assessed through simulations conducted under far-field conditions. The radar cross section (RCS) value of CNFs@Co/C-2 is less than -10 dB m2 over the entire test range, and the maximum RCS attenuation at θ = 0° could reach 24.09 dB m2. This study provides essential guidance for the development and production of lightweight materials featuring a hollow structure for advanced EMW absorption applications.

One-dimensional Co/C composite with ultra-wide bandwidth for boosting electromagnetic wave attenuation performance

Lin Ma,Hao Wu,Daheng Liu,Pengjie Zhang,Wei Sun,Xiaohui Liang,Jiewu Cui,Yu Zhang,Dianqing Yu,Fuchun Liu,En-Hou Han

It remains a challenge to develop electromagnetic wave absorbers with wide effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB). In this work, one-dimensional (1D) cobalt-based metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived composites were exploited on whose surfaces are decorated with nanoparticles. The EAB can reach up to 6.7 GHz with the corresponding matching thickness only 2.2 mm, which is far greater than those of most similar composites. The unique 1D rod microstructures possess a large length-to-diameter ratio and can provide a longer conductive path in a relatively small volume, which can reduce the length of electron transmission paths, and thus improve the overall conductivity. The composites contain a large number of cobalt/carbon heterogeneous interfaces, which can enhance the interface polarization phenomenon. Additionally, the impedance matching can be controlled in balance due to the double-component feature of the composites. The successful preparation of the cobalt-based MOF-derived composites with an ultra-wide EAB can significantly improve the upper limit of EAB of similar composites.

MOF-derived Co@C nanoparticle anchored aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel for superior microwave absorption capacity

Xin Hao

High-efficiency, porous and renewable magnetic microwave absorbing (MA) materials have been enthusiastically pursued due to their suitable impedance matching, light weight, strong multiple scattering and the synergy effect of dielectric and magnetic loss. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) Co@C/ANF aerogel, composed of magnetic MOF derivatives embedded in biomass aramid nanofiber (ANF), was prepared for the first time through a directional-freezing method followed by an annealing process. To evaluate their MA attenuation performance, the electromagnetic parameters of Co@C/ANF composites with different component ratios were measured at 2–18 GHz. Profiting from the preserved porous structure of MOF derivatives, the construction of multiple heterogeneous interfaces and suitable electromagnetic parameters, Co@C/ANF 2 : 1 exhibited a good MA performance of RLmin = −64.3 dB (indicating more than 99.99996% microwaves were absorbed) and EABmax = 6.8 GHz. Considering the admirable overall performance, the Co@C/ANF aerogel is deemed to be a promising candidate for the next-generation of lightweight, reproducible, and high-performance MA materials.

Controllable construction design of Co@C@MWCNTs interpenetrating composite with tunable enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption

Wang Yan,Di Xiaochuang,Lu Zhao

Lightweight absorbers with strong broadband microwave absorption are highly desired in military and civil fields. In this work, a 3D interpenetrating network formed from a Co@C@ MWCNTs composite was synthesized via a combined wet chemical and pyrolysis route. Because of strengthening interfacial polarization, suitable impedance matching and synergistic effects, the Co@C@MWCNTs hierarchical composite exhibited outstanding microwave absorption properties. An optimal reflection loss reached − 55.7 dB at 8.7 GHz and its effective bandwidth ( R L  < − 10 dB) achieved 4 GHz (7.4–11.4 GHz) at an absorber thickness of 3 mm with a low filler content of 10 wt%. Furthermore, an effective bandwidth of 12.4 GHz (4.5–16.9 GHz) was obtained by varying the thickness from 2 to 4.5 mm. The superior microwave absorption performance originated from the enhanced interfacial polarization, multiple reflections, conductive network, synergistic effects and an improved impedance matching between Co–C and MWCNTs. This work provides a strategy to rationally design novel lightweight absorbers with strong microwave absorption.

Rhombic dodecahedron Ce–Co/C composites with porous hollow structure for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Guiyang Xian,Ximing Zhang,Zhaolin Zhu,Yan Wang,Chongmei Wu,Yin Liu,Zhenying Liu,Xianglong Wan,Konghu Tian,Lingbing Kong

The excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted a lot of attention. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) was synthesized hydrothermally using 2-methylimidazole (2-mIm) as the organic ligand, cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O) as the cobalt source and methanol (MeOH) as the organic solvent . The ZIF-67 was etched with cerium nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O), leading to rhombic dodecahedron Ce–Co/C composites with porous hollow structure after thermal annealing. In addition, the effect of the content of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O on EMW absorption performance of the Ce–Co/C composites was studied. Specifically, the sample Ce–Co/C-2 (Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O): (ZIF-67 = 1:2) showed optimal EMW performance. For the Ce–Co/C-2 based composite with a filling ratio of 45 wt%, a RL min reached −64.67 dB at 11.12 GHz with a thickness of 2.21 mm. The promising EMW absorption performance of the porous hollow structure was attributed to its large specific surface area and massive defects, multiple reflection/scattering, improved impedance matching and increased dielectric loss. This work provides a reference improve EMW absorption performance of MOF materials through regulating their microstructures.

Preparation of Co/C Composites Derived from Zn/Co-ZIFs and Their Microwave Absorption Properties

Shi Chonghua,Fu Hang,Nie Jiajin,Yao Shaowei

A composite material of Co/N-doped porous carbon was derived from a zeolite imidazolate framework (Zn/Co-ZIF) precursor, which exhibited a controllable microstructure and high specific surface area. In order to study the microwave absorption properties of the composites, the Zn/Co-ZIFs were heat-treated at 930°C in a N 2 atmosphere to obtain the composites, in which Co nanoparticles were distributed uniformly in N-doped porous carbon (Co/C composites). Through N 2 adsorption and desorption testing, the specific surface area of the Co/C composites was about 333.5 m 2  g −1 , and the Barrett−Joyner−Halenda (BJH) pore size distribution was 5.7131 nm, with the majority of pores at mesoporous scale. The microwave absorption properties of Co/C composites with different content were then analyzed, revealing that the Co/C composite with absorbent content of 15 wt.% had the smallest reflection loss (−46.36 dB) at a thickness of 3.1 mm. Based on these results, the Co/C composites not only have the advantages of high specific surface area and special porous structure, but with the appropriate absorbent content, the Co/C composites show excellent microwave absorption performance.
