Due to the rapid development of alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water splitting, it is becoming increasingly urgent to develop non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium. Herein, Co 2 P/CoP hybrid is synthesized from cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CoCH) precursor, and further evaluated for the electrocatalytic HOR and HER in alkaline electrolytes. Specifically, benefiting from the reasonable hybrid structure that integrate suitable hydrogen adsorption energy of CoP and excellent conductivity of Co 2 P, Co 2 P/CoP hybrid exhibits excellent catalytic activities. The Co 2 P/CoP@NF hybrid has impressive HER activity, with a current density of −10 mA cm −2 at the overpotentials of −61 mV and the Tafel slope of 55.1 mV dec −1 , which can compete with recently reported transition metal phosphides and cobalt-based catalysts. In addition, the exchange current density of Co 2 P/CoP@NF hybrid is ~ 0.82 mA cm −2 for HOR, which is close to commercial Pt/C catalyst (~1.14 mA cm −2 ).

Rational design of efficient, low-cost and eco-friendly catalysts for hydrogen generation from solid-state hydrogen storage material ammonia borane (AB) is identified as an ideal approach for solving the problems of energy crisis and environmental pollution. Herein, we construct a robust and low-cost composite catalyst with the combination of non-noble metal cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P), carbon dots (CDs) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), in which CDs serve as the bridge and conductive mediator to link Co 2 P and HNTs for facilitating electron transfer. Attributing to the synergistic effects among Co 2 P, CDs and HNTs, the high conductivity of CDs and the dispersion/supporting of HNTs, the as-prepared Co 2 P-CDs/ m HNTs composite catalyst displays a considerably high hydrogen evolution rate with TOF of 178.02 mol H2 mol co2P −1 min −1 , which is much higher than Co 2 P/HNTs, Co 2 P/CDs and other non-noble metals-based catalysts. This work provides a new insight and bridging strategy for the design of low-cost composite catalysts with excellent performance toward AB hydrolysis.

Hyperbranched Co2P nanocrystals with three-dimensional structure have successfully been synthesized by a facile one-step wet-chemical method. The hyperbranched Co2P are consisted of a large number of nanofilaments. The crystal splitting should be responsible for the formation of this structure. Catalytic performances measurements toward hydrogen evolution reaction for the obtained hyperbranched Co2P nanocrystals demonstrate a small overpotential of 100 mV at current density of 10 mA cm−2, with a Tafel slope of 67 mV dec−1 in 1 M KOH. Durability tests show that slight catalytic activity fading occurs after 2000 CV cycles or 22 h chronoamperometric testing. In addition, the hyperbranched Co2P also perform well in 0.5 M H2SO4 with a low overpotential of 107 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 69 mV dec−1. This facile method provides a strategy for the preparation of low-cost metal phosphide electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution in both alkaline and acidic media.

Core/shell nanoparticles (NPs) of Au@Co2P, each comprising a Au core with a Co2P shell, were prepared, and shown to efficiently catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In particular, Au@Co2P has a small overpotential of 321 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH aqueous solution at room temperature, which is about 95 mV less than pure Co2P. More importantly, the Tafel slope of Au@Co2P, at 57 mV dec−1, is 44 mV dec−1 lower than that of Co2P. Hence, Au@Co2P outperforms Co2P drastically in practical production when a high current density is required.

Highly efficient and robust non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent stability are essential for practical large-scale application of hydrogen energy. Here, we design a hybrid nanostructure of Co 2 P nanoparticles encapsulated uniformly within N, P co-doped carbon layers that are then integrated into conductive carbon cloth (N-Co 2 P/NPC). As expected, the developed electrode exhibits very low overpotentials of 68 and 230 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the electronic structure of Co 2 P can be tailored effectively via the N-doping effect, with the d-band center shifting to a negative position compared with that at the Fermi level, leading to optimized adsorption interaction with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) intermediates. Furthermore, a stable solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 17.9% is achieved with a solar-driven water splitting electrolyzer.

The creation of electrocatalysts composed of nonprecious
metals,
which must be efficient, durable, and economical, constitutes a major
scientific hurdle for achieving practical overall water splitting
(OWS). In this study, a layered Ni 2 P–Fe 2 P–Co 2 P nanoarray electrocatalyst was fabricated
on nickel foam (NF) using NiFeCoOH via electrodeposition followed
by a low-temperature phosphidation strategy. The electrocatalyst features
abundant in-plane heterojunctions formed via cation exchange, which
effectively tune its morphology and enhance charge-transfer efficiency
and active-site exposure. At the same time, the heterojunctions promote
the adsorption/desorption of reaction intermediates, thereby synergistically
enhancing the catalytic activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction
(HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In an alkaline electrolyte,
the catalyst requires low overpotentials of only 43 mV for HER and
259 mV for OER to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm –2 and demonstrates excellent durability. When employed for overall
water splitting, it achieves 10 mA cm –2 at a low
cell voltage of 1.43 V.

Interfacial electronic coupling and dynamic surface restructuring are key to enhancing the performance of Co 2 P bifunctional electrocatalysts; however, the role of heterointerfaces in regulating anode restructuring remains unclear. Here, a flower-like Co 2 P/Ni x Te y /NF nanoarray rich in heterointerfaces was constructed by coupling Co 2 P with hydrothermally grown Ni x Te y /NF. This structure exposes abundant active sites, accelerates charge transfer, and promotes anodic reconstruction toward Ni/CoOOH active species, which contributes to the enhanced activity. In 1.0 M KOH, Co 2 P/Ni x Te y /NF electrode requires overpotential of only 66/108 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. A two-electrode electrolyzer assembled with Co 2 P/Ni x Te y /NF achieves 10 mA cm −2 at 1.52 V and sustains 100 mA cm −2 for over 1000 h. In-situ Raman spectroscopy directly reveals potential-driven surface reconstruction to Ni/CoOOH, while Laviron analysis indicates accelerated electron-transfer kinetics for the metal-center oxidation, providing guidance for designing dynamically evolving non-precious electrocatalysts.

Hydrogen has emerged as a promising clean energy source, driving extensive research into efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work reports the synthesis of a self-supported Co₂P/nitrogen-doped coal-based carbon fiber catalyst (Co₂P/N-C-CFs(S-ZIF-67)) with cobalt (Co) vacancies via pyrolysis of a nanoscale metal-organic framework (NMOF) precursor. Compared to conventional ZIF-67, NMOF of S-ZIF-67 (40 nm) derives smaller Co2P (7.3 nm), simultaneously generating hierarchical porosity with increased specific surface area. More importantly, the pyrolysis of S-ZIF-67 generates Co vacancies that optimize the electronic structure and increase the active site density of catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that these Co vacancies lower the d-band center and promote electron transfer within the catalyst. Furthermore, the N-C-CFs as supporter provides both structural flexibility and tunable hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*). Consequently, Co₂P/N-C-CFs(ZIF-67) exhibits exceptional HER performance in 0.5 M H₂SO₄, requiring only 66 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm⁻² current density, and demonstrates remarkable stability for 120 h at 20 mA cm⁻². Notably, it surpasses both Co₂P/N-C-CFs(ZIF-67) and commercial 20% Pt/C under high current densities. This study establishes an effective strategy for designing advanced HER catalysts through precise control of NMOF size and vacancy engineering.

A novel method to prepare hollow Co 2 P nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable shell thicknesses is proposed. In this method, high magnetic field was employed to tune the shell thickness. The mechanism of shell-tuning by magnetic field was discussed. The formation of Co 2 P hollow NPs involves two main processes: the dissolution of CoO on the surface of Co NPs, and the Kirkendall effect process. Magnetic field can reduce the particle size and tune the shell thickness by accelerating the dissolution process and slowing down the Kirkendall effect process. The effects of shell thickness on the stability of the hollow NPs were investigated. During the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process in alkaline medium , the Co 2 P hollow NPs with shell thicker than 3.90 nm have good structure stability and perform a good catalytic performance. Nevertheless, when shell thickness is reduced to 3.32 nm, there is a great change in the hollow structure. It will fracture into small NPs and lead to significant degradation of activity. This work develops a reasonable method to synthesize small-sized transition metal phosphides hollow particles with adjustable shell thickness, and provides a reference for balancing the activity and stability of hollow particles, which is significant to prepare hollow nanoparticles with good catalytic performance.

The rational design of low-cost, efficient, and stable heterojunction catalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution is attracting increasing attention towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a sequential spatial restriction-pyrolysis route is developed to confine Mott-Schottky-type Co-Co 2 P heterojunctions embedded in the one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotube-modified three-dimensional (3D) N,P dual-doped carbon matrix (Co-Co 2 P@CNT//CM). The synergistic effect between the abundant Mott-Schottky heterointerfaces and the 1D/3D dual carbon confinement system enables fully exposed active sites and facilitated charge transfer dynamics, thus triggering favorable electronic structures of Co-Co 2 P@CNT//CM. As a result, Co-Co 2 P@CNT//CM heterojunctions exhibit excellent pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with overpotentials of 142, 205, and 262 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS), respectively. The theoretical results demonstrated that the Mott-Schottky effect can induce an oriented interfacial charge exchange between Co and Co 2 P. This can lower the reactive kinetic barrier and endow Co-Co 2 P@CNT//CM with ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy, which efficiently drives the production of H 2 from electrolytic water.

Optimizing hydrogen adsorption and enhancing water absorption are essential for the design of effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Herein, a well-defined core–shell-structured P-CoNiMoO@Co 2 P-Ni 2 P catalyst was synthesized on nickel foam via high-temperature phosphidation of heterostructured precursor CoMoO 4 ·xH 2 O/NiMoO 4 ·xH 2 O with hydrogen (H 2 ) assistance. This catalyst exhibits good HER performance, requiring only 24 mV of overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and long-term stability, maintaining a current density of 100 mA cm −2 for over 100 h. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the molybdenum site is highly favorable for water adsorption in phosphorus-doped cobalt nickel molybdate (P-CoNiMoO), while the trigonal Ni 3 site is optimal for hydrogen adsorption. These findings indicate that the cooperative interactions and functional division between the core and shell substantially enhance HER performance. In addition, P-CoNiMoO@Co 2 P-Ni 2 P demonstrates high oxygen evolution reaction performance, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 243 mV. When functioning as a bifunctional electrocatalyst, it requires only 1.49 V to drive overall water splitting at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with a durability of over 200 h at current densities of 100 and 300 mA cm −2 . This study provides significant insights into the development of HER catalysts with potential applications in other fields.

Developing low-cost and robust bifunctional transition metal phosphide (TMPs)-based catalysts with controlled structures and compositions is very important for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, we report a new hollow leaf-like Co 2 P/N-doped porous carbon (Co 2 P-NC) composite, using the Co-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaf (Co-ZIF-L) coated with polydopamine (PDA) layer as precursor and phytic acid as etchant and phosphorus source. Due to the etching and coordination reaction between phytic acid and leaf-like Co-ZIF-L, the hollow structure is formed after an one-set pyrolysis process. Within this as-prepared TMP/carbon composite, Co 2 P nanoparticles are encapsulated and dispersed in two-dimensional (2D) hollow leaf-like N-doped porous carbon. Benefiting from structural and componential advantages, the Co 2 P-NC exhibits high catalytic activity and durability for both HER and OER as well as OWS in the alkaline medium. Unlike the traditional gas–solid reaction method for preparing TMPs, the present synthetic strategy is more safe and simple, which is very feasible for designing hollow TMPs/porous carbon composites.
