Precise Manipulation of Co3+ Spin-State in Co3O4 via Cu doping for efficient CO oxidation

Hui-Juan Wang,Bing-Hao Wang,Xiao-Yuan Hu,Sha Bai,Lang Chen,Shuang-Feng Yin

Cu content tunes site occupancy (octahedral or tetrahedral) for active site design. • Cu-Co 3 O 4 -7% induces higher spin Co 3+ , weakens Co–O, boosts O latt reactivity. • Cu-Co 3 O 4 -7% achieves complete CO conversion at 150 °C via O latt -mediated mechanism. • Linking occupancy, spin, bond length to performance for O latt catalyst design. Metal doping represents an effective strategy for modulating the electronic structure of cobalt spinel oxides and tailoring catalytic performance. However, the precise site occupancy of dopants in Co 3 O 4 lattice, octahedral versus tetrahedral, remains a subject of debate, hindering a mechanistic understanding of the promotional role of metal doping. In this study, by adjusting the doping amount of Cu (Cu-Co 3 O 4 -x%, x represents the amount of doped Cu), site-specific incorporation of Cu into either octahedral or tetrahedral sites of Co 3 O 4 was precisely controlled. The resulting Cu-Co 3 O 4 -7% achieves the highest CO oxidation activity under a high gas hourly space velocity. It is revealed that Cu doped in octahedral sites promotes the transition of Co 3+ from low spin to higher spin states. This spin-state transition weakens the Co 3d−O 2p interaction, facilitates lattice oxygen mobility, optimizes CO adsorption, and collectively enhances CO oxidation. This work provides a targeted approach for regulating the Co 3+ spin state and elucidates its critical role in molecular activation processes.

Co-loaded CNT having adjustable Co2+/Co3+ ratio endows PLLA bone scaffold with ROS-scavenging

Feng Yang,Mengling Jiang,Linfeng Fan,Hao Pan,Pei Feng

Co-loaded CNT with high Co 2+ content of 61.07% exhibited enhanced nanozyme activity. • P2 possessed a safe Co-ion release content far below the threshold of 20 ppm. • P2 exhibited good well-rounded properties and excellent anti-inflammatory activity. Excessive reactive oxygen specie (ROS) is not conducive to bone repair, which is prone to generate during the initial hematoma inflammatory phase following poly( L -lactic acid) (PLLA) bone scaffold implantation and the potential inflammation caused by its acidic degradation products. This study proposed introducing cobalt (Co)-based nanozyme into the PLLA scaffold, and focused on improving the dispersion between nanozyme and the PLLA matrix as well as enhancing the activity of nanozyme itself for efficiently scavenging ROS. The Co was loaded on the surface of carbon nanotube (CNT) for achieving uniform dispersion, and then calcined under different atmospheres for enhancing nanozyme activity via regulating the Co 2+ /Co 3+ ratio and optimizing the electronic structure. It was found that the nanozyme that was calcined in an N 2 atmosphere followed by phosphorylation exhibited a superior ROS-scavenging ability, which was attributed to its high Co 2+ content of 61.07% that facilitating the redox cycling and the optimization of its electronic structure by P doping. As a result, the composite scaffold (P2) at a nanozyme loading of 2 wt% possessed superior intracellular ROS-scavenging ability and downregulation of key inflammatory cytokines compared to the pure PLLA scaffold. It also possessed good cytocompatibility for cell adhesion and proliferation, and exhibited upregulated expression of the pro-angiogenic VEGF factor. Download: Download high-res image (228KB) Download: Download full-size image Co-based nanozyme was engineered by promoting dispersion and optimizing the Co 2+ /Co 3+ ratio for highly efficient SOD and CAT, and was used to endow the PLLA bone scaffold with good ROS-scavenging and cytocompatibility.

La(CO3)(OH) magnetic porous biochar for low concentrations of phosphate advanced removal from wastewater

Zhuolin Qing,Zetong Li,Zifan Zhong,Hang Zhong,Qirui Qin,Zekun Yang,Xin Yang,Junmin Chen

Lanthanum (La)-based hydroxide materials are considered promising candidates for phosphate removal, but their adsorption efficiency is often limited by the hydroxide (OH – ) release and slow mass transfer. In this study, we synthesized lanthanum hydroxyl carbonate supported onto magnetic porous biochar (La-FPBC 0.5 ) for advanced phosphate removal from actual secondary effluent of wastewater. La-FPBC 0.5 significantly enhanced phosphate removal by releasing more carbonate (CO 3 2– ) rather than hydroxy (–OH) during adsorption. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the absolute value of absorb adsorption energy for ion exchange in La-FPBC 0.5 is 4.48 eV, higher than that for ligand exchange (3.11 eV). The adsorption kinetic rate constant of La-FPBC 0.5 reached 1.7 × 10 -3 g/(mg −1 min), which is 1.8 times that of La(CO 3 )(OH). Furthermore, La-FPBC 0.5 removed up to 151.5 mg P/g of phosphate from wastewater, representing a 1.6-fold increase compared to La(CO 3 )(OH), surpassing not only commercial La-based materials but also most reported adsorbents. It maintained over 85 % of its phosphate adsorption capacity in the presence of anions or humic acid and showed effective adsorption across various water sources, including river, campus lake, and tap water, with a capacity exceeding 120 mg P/g. La-FPBC 0.5 also exhibited excellent stability, retaining 95 % of its capacity after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Notably, La-FPBC 0.5 treated approximately 1800 bed volumes of phosphate-containing wastewater to below 0.1 mg/L in a fixed-bed adsorption mode, with the recovered phosphate suitable for plant growth. These results suggest that La-FPBC 0.5 is an ideal candidate for phosphate removal in practical applications.

MOF-Derived Co3O4 Dodecahedrons with Abundant Active Co3+ for CH4 Gas Sensing at Room Temperature

Xueqi Wang,Yu Hong,Guohui Wu,Yujie Hou,Shengnan Zhao,Binbin Dong,Jianchun Fan,Jun Yu

Gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted significant attention in monitoring of methane emission and leakage monitoring due to their high sensitivity, fast response time, simple structure and low cost. However, the high power consumption caused by long-term high-temperature operation of MOS sensors restricts their application in mobile and portable devices. In this study, MOF-derived Co3O4dodecahedrons for low-concentration methane detection at room temperature was prepared using Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template and with various calcination temperatures. Among them, the Co3O4-350 calcined at 350 °C exhibited the optimal CH4sensing performance at room temperature, with a response of Rg/Ra= 1.53 to 2000 ppm CH4. This enhanced gas sensing performance is attributed to the highest Co3+proportions and the largest specific surface area in Co3O4-350 nanomaterials, which provided more active sites for gas adsorption and reaction. To address the challenge of slow response speed and irrecoverability during CH4detection at room temperature, the Co3O4nanomaterials were printed onto a micro-heater plate (MHP) to form a MEMS gas sensor. By introducing a pulse heating mode to the MEMS sensor, the response and recovery time were significantly reduced to 26 s and 21 s, respectively. This enhancement improves both the efficiency and reliability of the MEMS gas sensor for early-stage detection of CH4leaks in various industrial applications.

Ni and Zn co-substituted Co(CO3)0.5OH self-assembled flowers array for asymmetric supercapacitors

Hao Gu,Qin Zhong,Yiqing Zeng,Shule Zhang,Yunfei Bu

The supercapacitive performance of high-rate capacity and long-term cycling stability is still a big challenge for electroactive materials. Herein, Ni and Zn co-substituted Co carbonate hydroxide (NiZn-CoCH) flowers array is self-assembled on nickel foams (NFs) using l -ascorbic acid as a nanostructure inducer. The NiZn-CoCH flowers, consisting of silk-like nanosheets, are deservedly large electrode-electrolyte contact area and suitable ion-diffusion channel. The nanostructure and Ni and Zn co-substitution significantly improve energy storage performance. This electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 2020.8 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 with high-rate capacity (remain 80.2% at 10 A g −1 ) and 5000-cycle stability (almost unchanged after 1500 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device of NiZn-CoCH//activated carbon (AC) achieves a high energy density of 29.6 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 375 W kg −1 and only a 0.5% decrease of the capacitance after 2500 cycles. This facile and novel preparation method, using l -ascorbic acid, may be promising for industrial production of electroactive materials for the high-performance energy storage and conversion devices.

Mechanism insight into double S-scheme heterojunctions and atomic vacancies with tunable band structures for notably enhanced light-driven enrofloxacin decomposition

Xingyu Zhang,Chenliang Zhou,Shaoyuan Shi,Xuequan Jing,Zhi Zheng,Wenjing Yuan

Building narrow band gap semiconductors and fast separation of photogenerated electron-hole (e - -h + ) structures are of great significance for photocatalytic process. In this contribution, the CeO 2-x /C 3-y N 4 /Ce(CO 3 )(OH) double S-scheme heterojunctions with atomic vacancies tunable band gap (2.54 eV) have been designed and fabricated as a boost photocatalyst for enrofloxacin (ENR) photodegradation. Compared with the control samples, the experimental results indicate that the typical sample (CeO 2-x /C 3-y N 4 /Ce(CO 3 )(OH)-2) achieves the highest ENR photodegradation efficiency (93.6 %) in 240 min under a pH of 6, and the possible photodegradation pathways are also proposed. The superior performance is ascribed to the CeO 2-x /C 3-y N 4 /Ce(CO 3 )(OH) double S-scheme heterojunctions for selective recombination of photogenerated electrons with weak-reduction ability in conduction band (CB) of CeO 2-x , C 3-y N 4 and the photogenerated holes with weak-oxidation nature in valance band (VB) of C 3-y N 4 , Ce(CO 3 )(OH), which increase the retention rate of photogenerated electrons in CB of Ce(CO 3 )(OH) and photogenerated holes in VB of CeO 2-x to degrade ENR. This is the first systematic study of CeO 2-x /C 3-y N 4 /Ce(CO 3 )(OH) double S-scheme heterojunctions for ENR photodegradation.

Magnetic Co-Co Prussian blue analogue catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade organic dye

Yiqun Chen,Xiaori Huang,Dedong Sun,Hongchao Ma,Guowen Wang,Chun Ma,Jun Hao

In this study, the Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 composite catalyst was synthesized by co-precipitation method. The morphology and the structure of Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 composites were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, VSM. The results showed that the removal rate of RhB (10 mg/L) reached 99.5% in 40 min in the 0.4-Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 (200 mg/L) + PMS (50 mg/L) system with a pseudo first-order degradation rate constant (k) of 0.121 min −1 , which is nearly 2.16 times of that (0.0561 min −1 ) in the Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2  + PMS system and 18.9 times of that (0.0064 min −1 ) in the Fe 3 O 4  + PMS system. The observed synergistic catalysis between Fe 3 O 4 and Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 in Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 enhanced the degradation of RhB. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiment indicated that SO 4 − and OH played important roles in the degradation process of RhB. A synergistic catalytic mechanism of PMS activation by Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 , which mainly involves the enhanced Co 2+ /Co 3+ cycle by Fe 2+ donated electrons, was proposed. In summary, owing to its easy preparation, excellent catalytic activity, and reusability, the Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 [Co(CN) 6 ] 2 composite catalyst is a good candidate for remediation of contaminated water.

KRE(CO3)2 (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb): new mixed metal carbonates with strong photoluminescence and large birefringence

Yuan Lin,Chun-Li Hu,Zhi Fang,Jin Chen,Wei-Jie Xie,Yan Chen,Jian-Pu Wang,Jiang-Gao Mao

Three new potassium rare earth carbonates, namely KRE(CO3)2 (RE = Eu, Gd, Tb), were synthesized successfully. Their structures feature a novel [RE(CO3)2]− 3D framework with 1D channels along the c axis filled with K+ cations. Among them, KEu(CO3)2 and KTb(CO3)2 emit strong red and green photoluminescence, respectively. The birefringence values of KRE(CO3)2 were measured as 0.149, 0.162 and 0.215 at 546 nm, respectively. Remarkably, KTb(CO3)2 has the largest experimental birefringence among carbonates reported.

Self-sacrificial FeOOH-triggered Co(OH)2 heterointerface enables Co3+ enrichment and boosted high-current oxygen evolution

Liang Luo,Qi Shen,Lixing Wang,Huiluan Qin,Song Lu,Yeqing Wang,Jiadi Ying,Tiancun Liu,Min Guo,Zhixin Yu

Hierarchical Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH is constructed via a facile one-step heterogeneous nucleation strategy. • Self-sacrificial FeOOH nanoneedles protects Co-based active phases under high current. • Efficient Co 2+ →Co 3+ conversion enriches high-valence active sites for accelerated OER kinetics. • The catalyst delivers an low overpotential of 275 mV at 200 mA cm −2 . • The catalyst achieves remarkable operational stability for over 450 h at 1 A cm −2 for OER. Cobalt hydroxide-based catalysts are promising candidates for electrochemical water splitting, yet their practical application in industrial electrolysis is hindered by insufficient activity under high-current conditions. Herein, we rationally construct a hierarchical Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH composite via a one-step heterogeneous nucleation strategy, where FeOOH nanoneedles are uniformly anchored on Co(OH) 2 nanosheets frameworks. The composite achieves an ultra-low overpotential of 275 mV at 200 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with a lower Tafel slope. More notably, it maintains stability with negligible potential fluctuation over 450 h under an industrially relevant current density of 1 A cm −2 . The FeOOH promotes efficient Co 2+ →Co 3+ valence transition, while the hierarchical interfacial interactions enhance charge transfer efficiency and stabilize high-valence Co active species. A unique self-sacrificial mechanism is unveiled that preferential tip dissolution of FeOOH nanoneedles effectively protects the underlying Co-based active sites from over-oxidation and structural collapse, thereby ensuring long-term catalytic stability. Mechanistic studies further suggest that Co(OH) 2 /FeOOH exhibits enhanced lattice-oxygen-participated character relative to CoFe-LDH, which tends to follow the adsorbate evolution mechanism. This work develops a self-sacrificial interface engineering strategy to boost the activity and stability of Co(OH) 2 , and provides a feasible structural design paradigm for developing durable OER electrocatalysts toward industrial-relevant high-current conditions. Piezo-Photothermal Accelerates Co3+/Co2+ cycle to Boost PMS Activation over Co3O4/PTFE for Efficient Antibiotic Degradation

Shihan Wang,Weike Zheng,Haifeng Shi,Yigang Chen

In peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation processes, the relatively slow redox kinetics of metal ions have been a key factor limiting both PMS activation efficiency and photocatalytic performance. In this study, a Co 3 O 4 /PTFE composite with integrated piezoelectric and photothermal properties was successfully constructed, which significantly enhanced the Co 3+ /Co 2+ cycle and thereby promoted PMS activation for efficient tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the dual stimulation of mechanical agitation and visible light irradiation, the Co 3 O 4 /PTFE composite exhibited enhanced photothermal conversion and piezoelectric performance, which significantly promoted the generation of reactive species such as SO 4 •- and •OH. Compared with pristine Co 3 O 4 , CoP-2 demonstrated a superior TC degradation efficiency of up to 83% in the PMS system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the introduction of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) induced interfacial strain, modulated the valence state of cobalt species, and optimized the surface electronic structure, thereby facilitating the formation of active sites and enhancing electron transfer processes. Free radical trapping experiments further identified the dominant reactive species and revealed the underlying synergistic catalytic mechanism. Moreover, CoP-2 maintained excellent stability after multiple degradation cycles. This study provides a novel strategy for the design of multifunctional synergistic catalysts and expands the application potential of piezo-photothermal/PMS systems in environmental purification.

Jahn-Teller distortion lowers the kinetic barrier for Co3+/Co4+ redox: A pathway to ultrafast HMF electrooxidation

Dan Liu,Yudong Li,Jian Li,Chengyu Wang,Jingwei Li,Rong Wang,Xiaohui Yang

Mn incorporation into Co 3 O 4 induces Jahn–Teller distortion and Co 3+ spin-state transition ( t 2 g 6 e g 0  →  t 2 g 5 e g 1 ). • Such electronic modulation weakens Co O bonding and lowers Co 3+  → Co 4+ kinetic barrier. • Mn-Co 3 O 4 achieves ∼100% HMF conversion, 97.8% FDCA yield, and 96.0% Faradaic efficiency at 1.4 V vs. RHE. • DFT reveals that Mn incorporation reduces the PDS free energy from 4.05 eV to 2.11 eV by facilitating α-C–H cleavage. The electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a key transformation for sustainable polymer production, yet its efficiency is hampered by the kinetically demanding cleavage of the α-C–H bonding in the hydroxymethyl group. Herein, we demonstrate that Jahn–Teller distortion serves as an effective strategy to overcome this limitation. By incorporating Mn 3+ ( t 2g 3 e g 1 ) into Co 3 O 4 , we induce a spin-state transition of Co 3+ from low-spin ( t 2g 6 e g 0 ) to intermediate-spin ( t 2g 5 e g 1 ), which weakens Co O bonding and lowers the kinetic barrier for Co 3+  → Co 4+ oxidation. Compared with that of Co 3 O 4 , Mn-Co 3 O 4 achieves a complete HMF conversion with 97.8% of FDCA yield and 96.0% of Faradaic efficiency at 1.4 V vs. RHE, representing a 3.72-fold enhancement in intrinsic activity. Computational and theoretical analysis corroborates that Mn-induced Jahn–Teller electronic modulation not only benefits the adsorption and activation of HMF molecules but also facilitates the cleavage of α-C–H bonding, thereby lowering the reaction barrier. This work establishes Jahn–Teller-distortion-mediated Co 3+ /Co 4+ redox regulation as a focused electronic-structure strategy for promoting high-valence-Co-driven HMF electrooxidation. The Jahn-Teller-driven generation of high-valence Co 4+ species in pristine Co 3 O 4 by the incorporation of Mn 3+ ( t 2g 3 e g 1 ) accelerate the rate-determining initial oxidation of hydroxymethyl groups, markedly enhancing reaction kinetics of HMF to FDCA. A Novel Synthesis Method of Dumbbell-like (Gd1−xTbx)2O(CO3)2·H2O Phosphor for Latent Fingerprint

Lei Huang,Jian Qian,Shijian Sun,Zheng Li,Dechuan Li

A novel method for synthesizing dumbbell-shaped (Gd1−xTbx)2O(CO3)2·H2O (GOC:xTb3+) phosphors using sodium carbonate was investigated. An amount of 1 mmol of stable fluorescent powder can be widely prepared using 3–11 mmol of Na2CO3at a pH value of 8.5–10.5 in the reaction solution. The optimal reaction conditions for the phosphors were determined to be 7 mmol for the amount of sodium carbonate and a pH of 9.5 in the solution. Mapping analysis of the elements confirmed uniform distribution of Gd3+and Tb3+elements in GOC:xTb3+. The analysis of fluorescence intensity shows that an optimal excitation wavelength of 273 nm is observed when the concentration of Tb3+is between 0.005 and 0.3. The highest emission intensity was observed for GOC:0.05Tb3+with a 57.5% maximum quantum efficiency. The chromaticity coordinates show that the color of GOC:Tb3+is stable and suitable for fluorescence recognition. Latent fingerprint visualization reveals distinctive features like whorls, hooks, and bifurcations. Therefore, the sodium carbonate method offers an effective alternative to traditional urea chemical reaction conditions for preparing GOC:Tb3+.
