Surface bonding of CoP to biomass derived carbon microtube: Site-specific growth and high-efficiency catalysis

Xiaoyun Zhang,Lili Song,Le Tong,Mengyuan Zeng,Yuqiao Wang

The imitation and exploration of natural structures and characteristics are the inspiration source for science and technology progress. Herein, we report a method for preparing CoP anchored carbon microtubes (CoP@BCMT) by continuous hydrothermal, carbonization and phosphorization processes using cattail fibers (CFs) as carbon sources. The surface hydroxyl (–OH) groups acted as the growth sites for CoP fixed and grew in special positions. Co was anchored to BCMT surface through –OH groups and C-O-Co bonds were formed between CoP and BCMT. Surface bonding can ensure the growth of CoP at specific sites. The ultra-thin carbon layer covered CoP was deposited by the deposition of suspended carbon during CFs carbonization. CoP size, dispersibility and adhesion were maintained well due to surface coating and bonding. C-O-Co bonds promoted electron transfer and optimized adsorption energy of hydrogen, which was evaluated by density functional theory calculations. CoP@BCMT exhibited a low overpotential of 49 mV at current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability for 72 h. We modified commercial carbon nanotubes with surface hydroxyl groups and then combined with CoP, which greatly improved the catalytic performance. This work provides us with ideas for learning and using biomass to prepare advanced catalysts.

Electron spin polarization-mediated charge separation in Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructures toward optimized photocatalytic performance

Bin Fang,Zipeng Xing,Weifeng Kong,Zhenzi Li,Wei Zhou

Electron spin polarization plays a vital role on photocatalysis but rarely considered. Herein, a double-layer hollow yolk-shell Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure photocatalyst is prepared via two ion exchanges approach using Co-MOF as a template. It shows ferromagnetic characteristics and obvious photothermal effect due to the special structure. Interestingly, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is enhanced about twice under external magnetic field compared to field-free. The improvement can be ascribed to the enhanced electron spin polarization of the vacancy defects for Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions promoting efficient photogenerated charge separation and prolonging the lifetimes obviously. The special double-layer hollow yolk-shell superstructure is another reason for the optimized photocatalytic performance, which could expose adequate surface active sites for photocatalytic reaction. Moreover, the high stability of this defective Pd/CoP@CoNiP superstructure indicates the potential applications in field of photocatalysis. This strategy may provide new insights for fabricating high-efficient superstructure photocatalysts with electron spin polarization.

Coupled MoO3−x@CoP heterostructure as a pH-universal electrode for hydrogen generation at a high current density

Pengzuo Chen,Kaixun Li,Yutong Ye,Doufeng Wu,Yun Tong

Developing high-performance and low-cost self-supporting electrodes as pH-universal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) and realizing high-quality hydrogen production at a high current density are highly desirable, but are hugely challenging. We created a self-supporting electrode with a coupled hierarchical heterostructure by simple electrodeposition followed by sulfurization. It comprised oxygen-deficient molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) and cobalt phosphide (CoP) on nickel foam (NF), which represented a highly active pH-universal electrocatalyst for the HER at a high current density. Benefiting from a plethora of catalytic active sites, improved interfacial charge transfer, and strong electronic interaction, this type of MoO3−x@CoP/NF electrode delivered a superior catalytic performance. Overpotentials of only 100 mV, 135 mV, and 400 mV were needed to realize a high current density of 1 A cm−2 in alkaline, acid and neutral media, respectively, which were superior to those of most other well-developed materials based on non-noble metals. Our experimental work demonstrates the synergistic advantages of a MoO3−x@CoP heterostructure for improving the intrinsic catalytic performance but also paves a new path for the rational design of advanced electrodes for hydrogen generation in a wide range of pH conditions.

Carbon confined Mo doped CoP for alkali overall water splitting with enhanced catalytic activity and durability

Jiabing Luo,Yongxiao Tuo,Jianchao Zhang,Wenle Li,Shutao Wang,Yanpeng Li,Yuan Pan,Yan Zhou,Jun Zhang

The development of efficient and low-cost overall water splitting electrocatalysts for an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer is desirable for hydrogen production. The control of geometric and electronic structures of electrocatalysts can improve the catalytic efficiency of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and durability in oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Spatially confined growth and heteroatom doping can achieve this prospect of the target electrocatalysts. Herein, we prepared a carbon-shell confined Mo-doped CoP electrocatalyst (Mo-CoP@C) via an anion adsorption coupled pyrolytic phosphorization method. A Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) of Co was used to achieve Mo doping and carbon-shell encapsulation. Mo doping significantly altered the electronic structure of CoP, which produced a local polarized environment for water dissociation during alkali HER process. Meanwhile, carbon-shell confined growth and provided a protective layer for durable OER process. Consequently, Mo-CoP@C exhibits attractive alkali electrocatalytic HER and OER activities with the overpotentials of 122 and 280 mV at 0.01 A cm −2 . Finally, the assembled Mo-CoP@C-CP‖Mo-CoP@C-TFF AEM electrolyzer could operate for 500 h at 0.1 A cm −2 .

In-situ generated NiCo2O4/CoP polyhedron with rich oxygen vacancies interpenetrating by P-doped carbon nanotubes for high performance supercapacitors

Yu Liu,Zhenlin Ma,Xiumei Chen,Yulong Ying,Weidong Shi

Supercapacitor with high storage capacity and small volumes are the development trends of miniaturization and portable energy storage systems. Herein, we design a novel self-supporting P-doped carbon nanotube (P-CNT) intercalating NiCo 2 O 4 /CoP core–shell polyhedron film. P-CNT is an ideal substrate with high electrical conductivity and interconnected porous architecture, which can enable the electrons transport to an external circuit from the electroactive component. NiCo 2 O 4 /CoP core–shell fluffy polyhedrons are derived from metal-organic frameworks with rich oxygen vacancies and abundant characteristics of pseudocapacitance, as well as better wettability. The self-supporting composite film readily achieves an ultra-high gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of 1918.4 F g −1 and 1074.3 F cm −3 at 1 A g −1 . Accordingly, as-assembled hybrid supercapacitors using two binder-free electrodes, i.e., a self-supporting composite film as the positive electrode and P-doped CNT integrating graphene film as the negative electrode, harvest a remarkable gravimetric/volumetric energy density of 68.6 W h kg −1 (41.8 W h L −1 ) at 800 W kg −1 (488 W L −1 ). Our work suggests that the rational-designed NiCo 2 O 4 /CoP@P-CNTs electrode is a competitive candidate for designing next-generation supercapacitors with high volumetric energy density.

Mengjie Pan,Huachen Lin,Lin Sun,Yulong Ying,Hong Jia,Yu Liu

Research into electrode materials that are low-cost, possess high capacity, and exhibit long cycle life is pivotal for the advancement of supercapacitor technology. Herein, a CoP/P-C/MnO 2 @CC composite is synthesized by solution impregnation and high temperature phosphating. The unique combination of nanotubes and MnO 2 nanosheets reduces ion and electron transmission distance and significantly increases active sites. The CoP/P-C/MnO 2 @CC electrode demonstrates a specific capacitance of 742.0 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , a substantial improvement over the counterpart prior to KMnO 4 immersion (459.4 F g −1 ). Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on the CoP/P-C/MnO 2 @CC electrode was assembled, achieving a high energy density of 93.12 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 800 W kg −1 . Meanwhile, the device maintains 77.3 % of its original capacity after 8000 cycles, demonstrating good cycle stability. This study not only presents an attractive electrode material with unique structure, but also provides a referential methodology for developing superior electrodes.

Hierarchical CoP@NiMn-P Nanocomposites Grown on Carbon Cloth for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Bi Wu,Jian Wei Zhao,Li Rong Qin,Yuan Ji Xiang

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are potential candidates for supercapacitors. To improve their performance by adjusting their morphology and composition, hierarchical CoP@NiMn-P nanocomposites were successfully prepared by the hydrothermal method, electrodeposition, and low-temperature phosphorization. NiMn-P nanosheets were coated on CoP nanowires to form a hierarchical structure. Electrochemical analysis results indicated that the specific capacitance reached 2162.2 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 with a high capacitance retention ratio of 83.3% after 5000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g-1. This excellent electrochemical performance was attributed to the large specific surface area and enhanced conductivity. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor, CoP@NiMn-P//AC, was prepared using CoP@NiMn-P as the positive electrode and AC as the negative electrode. A large voltage window of 1.6 V and high energy density of 21.1 Wh kg-1 at 804.3 W kg-1 with a good capacity retention rate were achieved. The results confirm that CoP@NiMn-P has good potential for application in high-performance energy storage devices and provide a reference for the design of phosphide with morphology/composition optimization.

Zhixiang Cui,Jixin Lin,Jiahui Wu,Jiaqi Yu,Junhui Si,Qianting Wang

The development of high-efficiency and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has attracted increasing research attention. Herein, we report a novel nanocomposite of N-doped CoP nanoparticles embedded in porous carbon nanofibers (N–CoP@NPCNFs) synthesized using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)@Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (ZIF-67@PNFs) as the precursor through carbonization, oxidation and phosphidation with N-doping. The fabricated N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 shows outstanding electrocatalytic properties for OER due to a synergistic effect between the carbon nanofibers and the N-doped CoP nanoparticles. It exhibits a low overpotential of only 266 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 70 mV dec −1 and excellent durability for OER in 1.0 M KOH. Therefore, the obtained N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 is promising for application as a high-efficiency and low-cost OER electrocatalyst.

Redirecting surface reconstruction of CoP-Cu heterojunction to promote ammonia synthesis at industrial-level current density

Li Gan,Xiaoxue Zhang,Lei Guo,Muhammad Ajmal,Ru Jia,Xiaolei Guo,Chengxiang Shi,Lun Pan,Faryal Idrees,Xiangwen Zhang,Zhen-Feng Huang,Guidong Yang,Ji-Jun Zou

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − RR) represents a compelling approach for the treatment of wastewater, serving as both a sustainable substitute to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process and a viable alternative to direct electroreduction of N 2 . However, the process involves multiple electron and proton transfer steps and a complex reaction pathway, leading to low Faraday efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we demonstrated a directional surface reconstruction to generate CoP-Cu/Co(OH) 2 heterojunction for synergistic catalysis of NO 3 − RR. Impressively, a high ammonia generation rate of 9.91 mmol h −1 cm −2 and a Faraday efficiency of 99.2 % can be achieved at an industrial-relevant current density of 2 A cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst exhibited exceptional durability, maintaining the activity for 110 h under industrial current density. Such outstanding NO 3 − RR performance can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect among the active sites of Cu, CoP and Co(OH) 2 , as well as the excellent stability of self-supported catalyst. Specifically, Cu and CoP sites synergistically promote the conversion of NO 3 − to NO 2 − and NO 2 − to NH 3 . Meanwhile, the partial reconstructed Co(OH) 2 from CoP enhances water dissociation, thereby supplying active hydrogen (*H) essential for NO 3 − RR. When applied to a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) system, CoP-Cu/Co(OH) 2 can deliver satisfactory ammonia production rate with appreciable economic benefits at industrial-level current densities, highlighting its potential for industrial applications.

Co(OH)2 nanosheets decorated with La-CoP nanorod array for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Yaoxia Yang,Xingwei Guo,Mi Kang,Dangxia Wang,Zhiwang Yang

Developing efficient and inexpensive catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for the commercial viability of electrochemical sustainable energy technologies. In this study, a La-CoP/Co(OH)2 nanoarray supported on nickel foam (NF) was successfully prepared using the secondary hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphating method. The as-prepared La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF material exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of La-CoP/Co(OH)2/NF was 114 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, and the Tafel slope was estimated to be 99 mV dec−1. The decoration of Co(OH)2 nanosheets on La-CoP nanorods with the textured surface not only provides a large surface area and more active sites but also promotes the transfer of electrons between Co(OH)2 and La-CoP, which accelerates the reaction rate and further improve the HER performance of the composite material. Additionally, the fabricated catalyst exhibits good stability and durability in alkaline media. This approach provides a feasible and effective strategy for exploring electrocatalysts with high efficiency and low prices for the electrolysis of water.

Synergistic Promotion of Large-Current Water Splitting through Interfacial Engineering of Hierarchically Structured CoP−FeP Nanosheets with Rich P Vacancies

Luoluo Qi,Zhiyang Huang,Miao Liao,Lei Wang,Lixia Wang,Mingcheng Gao,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Graphical A CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam is constructed through impregnation and phosphorization. It demonstrates excellent hydrogen evolution performance and has practical application prospects in high-current overall water splitting. The catalyst‘s unique hierarchical nanosheet structure, plentiful P vacancies and synergistic effect of CoP and FeP accelerate HER kinetics, resulting in its superior performance. The development of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high performance under large current density is still a challenge. Introducing P vacancies in heterostructure is an appealing strategy to enhance HER kinetics. This study investigates a CoP−FeP heterostructure catalyst with abundant P vacancies (Vp−CoP−FeP/NF) on nickel foam (NF), which was prepared using dipping and phosphating treatment. The optimized Vp−CoP−FeP catalyst exerted prominent HER catalytic capability, requiring an ultra-low overpotential (58 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and displaying robust durability (50 h @ 200 mA cm −2 ) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated superior overall water splitting activity as cathode, demanding only cell voltage of 1.76 V at 200 mA cm −2 , outperforming Pt/C/NF (−) || RuO 2 /NF (+) . The catalyst‘s outstanding performance can be attributed to the hierarchical structure of porous nanosheets, abundant P vacancies, and synergistic effect between CoP and FeP components, which promote water dissociation and H* adsorption and desorption, thereby synergically accelerating HER kinetics and enhancing HER activity. This study demonstrates the potential of HER catalysts with phosphorus-rich vacancies that can work under industrial-scale current density, highlighting the importance of developing durable and efficient catalysts for hydrogen production.

MOF-derived carbon-containing Fe doped porous CoP nanosheets towards hydrogen evolution reaction and hydrodesulfurization

Chen Wen,Ligang Chen,Yating Xie,Jingying Bai,Xin Liang

In order to explore the effect of Fe doped CoP nanosheets on both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrodesulfurization (HDS), FeCoP/C nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal process with Fe doped ZIF-67/C for the growth of FeCo-hydroxides nanosheets , as well as a following low-temperature phosphorization process. The performance evaluation results show that the FeCoP/C nanosheet exhibits an excellent acidic HER performance and an ordinary HDS performance compared to CoP/C and FeP/C catalysts. Experimental characterization and density functional theory results show that the high HER activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the nanosheet structure facilitates the exposure of active sites and the doped Fe atoms make CoP have a suitable hydrogen adsorption energy , while the ordinary HDS activity of the FeCoP/C nanosheet can be attributed to the fact that the doped Fe atoms can inhibit the cleavage of C–S bonds by CoP.
