Sn-Doped Cs3Cu2I5 Microcrystals with High Photoluminescence and Hydrochromic Stability for Anti-Counterfeiting and Encryption Applications

Gaolei Dong,Weichen Li,Lu Zhang,Weixiong Cai,Bobo Yang,Rongrong Hu,Qianqian Zhou,Shiliang Mei,Jun Zou

Cu-based perovskites have excellent optical properties, environmental friendliness, and broad optical applications. However, their development is hindered by complex preparation methods and poor hydrochromic stability. In this work, a solvent-evaporation-based crystallization strategy combined with Sn doping for the preparation of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 microcrystals (MCs) is reported. This strategy enhances the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and hydrochromic reliability. In addition, first-principles calculations reveal the effect of Sn doping on the lattice structure and exciton–phonon coupling of the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs. The results show that Sn doping reduces the lattice spacing as a result of the substitution radius difference between Cu + and Sn 2+ ions, which causes stronger exciton–phonon coupling and enhances the PLQY. Moreover, the Sn-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs show excellent reliability on heating and under hydrochromic cycles and long-term luminescence conditions. Based on their hydrochromic and temperature-responsive properties, the Sn-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 MCs are applied as encryptable printing materials for information encryption and decryption and as a fluorescence-based temperature sensor, combined with Machine-Learning to guide the manufacturing of fluorescent thermometers. The findings provide insights into the commercial value of copper-based perovskites and demonstrate their potential anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence temperature sensing applications.

Multi-Energy X-Ray Linear-Array Detector Enabled by the Side-Illuminated Metal Halide Scintillator

Peng Ran,Qingrui Yao,Juan Hui,Yirong Su,Lurong Yang,Cuifang Kuang,Xu Liu,Yang (Michael) Yang

Conventional scintillator-based X-ray imaging typically captures the full spectral of X-ray photons without distinguishing their energy. However, the absence of X-ray spectral information often results in insufficient image contrast, particularly for substances possessing similar atomic numbers and densities. In this study, an innovative multi-energy X-ray linear-array detector is presented that leverages side-illuminated X-ray scintillation using the emerging metal halide Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 . The negligible self-absorption characteristic not only improves the scintillation output but is also beneficial for improving the energy resolution for the side-illuminated scintillation scenarios. By exploiting Beer's law, which governs the absorption of X-ray photons with different energies, the incident X-ray spectral can be reconstructed by analyzing the distribution of scintillation intensity when the scintillator is illuminated from the side. The relative error between the reconstructed and measured X-ray spectral is < 5.63%. This method offers an additional energy-resolving capability for X-ray linear-array detectors commonly used in computed tomography (CT) imaging setups, surpassing the capabilities of conventional energy-integration approaches, all without requiring extra hardware components. A proof-of-concept multi-energy CT imaging system featuring eight energy channels is successfully implemented. This study presents a simple and efficient strategy for achieving multi-energy X-ray detection and CT imaging based on emerging metal halides.

Improvement of Cs3Cu2I5 Single-Crystal Growth Process by YCl3 Additives: Cu+ Oxidation Inhibition and Precursor Colloid Stabilization

Wang Zhou,Tianyun Du,Chunqian Xu,Xiuxun Han

Cs3Cu2I5single crystals are regarded as promising next-generation scintillators due to their large Stokes shift and low self-absorption characteristics. However, the cost-effective solution growth method faces critical challenges: the instability of colloidal precursors in solutions and the severe oxidation of Cu+during crystal growth. This study innovatively introduces yttrium chloride (YCl3) as a dual-functional additive to address both issues simultaneously. The hydrolysis of YCl3creates a controlled acidic environment, effectively suppressing the oxidation of Cu+; meanwhile, it enhances the stability of colloidal precursors by significantly increasing their surface charge and narrowing the particle size distribution. These synergistic effects enable the rapid growth (approximately 100 h) of near-centimeter-sized Cs3Cu2I5single crystals with high crystallinity, without the need for inert gas protection. The optimized crystals exhibit exceptional performance: a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 93.22% ± 0.47%, a scintillation decay time of 210.04 ns, and a light yield of ~738.14 pe/MeV. This YCl3-mediated growth strategy establishes an efficient approach for the solution-based synthesis of high-quality Cs3Cu2I5single crystals, holding great significance for advancing high-sensitivity, environment-stable radiation detection applications such as medical diagnostics and nuclear safety monitoring.

mPEG-NH2-directed phase engineering of biphasic Cs3Cu2I5/CsCu2I3 copper halides for single-matrix white-light emission

Jingran Zhang,LiYan Zheng,Guifu Zuo,Yuchen Yue,Qian Zhang,Mengnan Zhang

Lead-free copper halides have emerged as promising self-trapped exciton (STE) emitters for broadband white-light generation, yet the direct construction of compositionally regulated single-matrix white emitters remains challenging. This study presents an mPEG-NH 2 -directed phase-engineering strategy for the one-step in situ construction of biphasic Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /CsCu 2 I 3 copper halides. By introducing methoxy polyethylene glycol amine into the ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) process, the local coordination environment and supersaturation-driven nucleation behavior of Cs + , Cu + , and I − species are regulated, enabling the coexistence of blue-emitting Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and yellow-emitting CsCu 2 I 3 within one crystallization system. The amino and ether oxygen sites of mPEG-NH 2 further promote interfacial coupling with the copper halide matrix, reducing non-radiative STE deactivation and improving radiative recombination. The optimized CCI:3P sample exhibits broadband white-light emission with Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.3236, 0.3347), a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 42.8%, and a prolonged exciton lifetime. A UV-pumped WLED based on CCI:3P emits white light with a correlated color temperature of 6052 K. In addition, the biphasic material exhibits distinct water- and heat-induced luminescence changes, demonstrating stimulus-dependent optical contrast. This work provides a polymer-directed strategy for designing lead-free copper halide emitters with integrated white-light emission and responsive optical functionality.

Facile low-temperature solid-state synthesis of efficient blue-emitting Cs3Cu2I5 powder phosphors for solid-state lighting

Xiaoyong Huang,Qi Sun,Balaji Devakumar

The discovery of new environmentally friendly luminescent materials with high photoluminescence quantum yield and long-term stability is critical for future solid-state lighting and displays applications. Although lead halide perovskite materials with excellent optical properties have been extensively investigated in recent years because they hold tremendous promise in optoelectronic devices, the toxicity of lead and poor air-stability still hinder their commercial applications. Moreover, while substantial work has been done on three-dimensional (3D) perovskite halides, the zero-dimensional (0D) halide emitters with bright luminescence remain elusive. Herein we report a facile solid-state reaction method to prepare an efficient lead-free all-inorganic halide material with 0D structure, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 , with photoluminescence quantum yield up to 80%. Under ultraviolet excitation at 313 nm, the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 powder phosphors show a strong blue photoluminescence emission with peak at 445 nm and CIE color coordinates of (0.1486, 0.0873). Notably, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 exhibits good color stability at high temperatures and outstanding stability towards air exposure exceeding one month (30 days). These findings not only open up a door for the development of promising highly emissive low-dimensional halide materials for lighting and displays, but also offer a new scalable approach for the potential mass production of halide emitters.

Green anti-solvent assisted crystallization strategy for air-stable uniform Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite films with highly efficient blue photoluminescence

Fanju Zeng,Yuanyang Guo,Wei Hu,Yongqian Tan,Xiaomei Zhang,Jie Yang,Qiqi Lin,Yao Peng,Xiaosheng Tang,Zhengzheng Liu,Zhiqiang Yao,Juan Du

Metal halide perovskites have aroused extensive attention due to their excellent photoelectric properties . But the toxicity and instability of lead-based perovskite restrict their development severely. Recently, lead-free Cu-based perovskites have emerged as promising environmental friendly photoelectric materials on account of their low toxicity and equally excellent properties. Here, we report the highly uniform lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films with the long-term air-stability prepared by using methyl acetate as anti-solvent during the fabrication. The crystal structure, surface morphology , bandgap, and optical property of the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films are investigated. Even though the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films prepared with or without anti-solvent demonstrate the same crystal structure of the orthorhombic phase, by the anti-solvent approach, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films exhibit an enhanced photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQY) from ~62% to ~76.0% and have a relatively smaller surface roughness ~17.5 nm. Most importantly, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films exhibited long-term air-stability, and the PLQY could still reach 76.3% after storing for several months under an ambient atmosphere. All the results demonstrate the quality and the PLQY of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 perovskite films could be effectively improved by the anti-solvent assisted crystallization strategy, showing potential applications in the fabrication of photoelectric devices based on lead-free perovskites.

In-situ growth of Cs3Cu2I5 scintillators with an anodic aluminum oxide matrix for high-resolution X-ray imaging

Lin Li,Yilong Ren,Jincong Pang,Tao Lin,Jie Sun,Ruiguang Peng,Kai Gao

A Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5  perovskite scintillator film with ordered array structure is fabricated  via  AAO-templated  in-situ  growth. • The AAO template guides photon propagation and reduces optical crosstalk, achieving 15.5 lp mm -1  at MTF 0.2. • The Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 -AAO composite scintillator shows an ultralow detection limit of 92 nGy s -1  and excellent stability. • This work offers a scalable, eco-friendly strategy for high-performance pixelated scintillators in X-ray imaging. Scintillators are essential for X-ray imaging as they convert high-energy radiation into detectable visible light, thereby directly determining the spatial resolution and sensitivity of the imaging system. Among these, pixelated scintillator films based on the optical waveguide effect are considered an ideal structure for achieving high-resolution imaging. However, their efficient and high-precision fabrication remains challenging. To address these challenges, this study introduces a strategy for the in-situ growth of lead-free perovskite scintillator Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 within an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template via a vacuum-assisted infiltration method, resulting in the successful fabrication of a Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 -AAO composite scintillator film featuring a well-ordered array structure. The ordered nanoporous structure of AAO guides photon propagation, minimizing lateral scattering and significantly enhancing light extraction and spatial confinement. X-ray imaging experiments demonstrate that the fabricated scintillator film achieves a spatial resolution of 15.5 lp mm −1 at a modulation transfer function (MTF) of 0.2. Moreover, the material exhibits a low detection limit of 92 nGy s −1 and maintains excellent stability under continuous X-ray irradiation, highlighting its outstanding overall scintillation performance. By integrating material design with structural engineering, this work provides a scalable and effective strategy for designing environmentally friendly and high-performance scintillators for next-generation X-ray imaging applications. Co-Firing Slow Solidification Process for Growing Indium-Doped Cs3Cu2I5 Single Crystals With Record-Breaking X-Ray Detection Performance

Rui Liu,Zhiyong Liu,Chengxu Lin,Chenyu Li,Tielin Shi,Xingyue Liu,Guanglan Liao

Perovskite single crystals have shown great potential in both direct and indirect X-ray detection. In direct detection, high leakage current and response drift caused by low resistivity and severe ion migration will lead to low device sensitivity and stability. In indirect detection, the reabsorption behavior and afterglow phenomenon caused by edge transitions in the scintillator will seriously damage its scintillation performance, thereby limiting the high-quality imaging of the detector at low doses. Herein, we demonstrate a brand-new co-firing slow solidification process to prepare large-sized In-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals for direct and indirect detection. The regular-shaped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 : In wafer used for indirect detection achieves a light yield of 74 368 Ph MeV −1 , which is the highest related to indium-doped Cu-based perovskites. The controlled cooling Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 : In single crystals, achieve a detection limit of 29.98 nGy s −1 and a spatial resolution of 15.1 lp mm −1 . We further fabricate a direct X-ray detector with a vertical structure of Au/Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 : In single crystal/Cu. The resistivity of the detector prepared by controlled cooling is 1.43 × 10 11 Ω × m, which is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the detector obtained by natural cooling (2.55 × 10 8 Ω × m). Meanwhile, under an electric field of 100 V mm −1 , the sensitivity of the controlled cooling detector is 4507 μC Gy −1 cm −2 , 188% higher than that of the natural cooling detector (2392 μC Gy −1 cm −2 ). These results prove that our process will provide new insights into high-sensitivity X-ray detection and low-dose X-ray imaging.

Surface defect passivation and charge redistribution synergistically enhance the room-temperature H2S gas sensing performance of Cs3Cu2I5-based sensors

Xianjie Xu,Yanyan Wang,Xiuquan Gu,Xinkai Qi,Hongwei Liu,Lei Zhu,Peng Wang,Sheng Huang

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a highly toxic gas, making its efficient and energy-saving detection at room temperature critical for industrial safety and environmental monitoring. In this work, a Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /TiO 2 composite was fabricated via in situ pyrolytic encapsulation. The composite exhibits high sensitivity (0.29 @1 ppm), rapid response (25 s), and excellent selectivity toward H 2 S at room temperature. Theoretical calculations reveal that incorporating TiO 2 narrows the bandgap from 2.260 eV to 1.296 eV, thereby enhancing carrier mobility. Furthermore, TiO 2 passivation elevates the formation energy of iodine vacancies from 4.11 eV to 6.60 eV, suppressing defect migration and improving chemical stability (decay <6.7 % over 15 days). Calculated adsorption energies confirm significantly stronger adsorption of H 2 S (−4.44 eV) on Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /TiO 2 compared to CO (−2.39 eV), CH 4 (−2.57 eV), SO 2 (−2.74 eV), and H 2 (−1.93 eV), consistent with experimental selectivity. To mitigate humidity interference, dynamic sensor signals were mapped into two-dimensional images using a Gramian Angular Summation Field (GASF) and processed via an AlexNet-based convolutional neural network. This approach achieves 97 % accuracy in interference elimination through time-series feature extraction. This study establishes a new paradigm for regulating electronic states, defects, and band structures in room-temperature gas sensors, advancing the development of intelligent sensing technologies.

Isothermal Near-Room-Temperature Growth of Mechanically Robust Cs3Cu2I5 Single Crystals for Gamma-Ray Detection and X-Ray Imaging

Yanqi Zhang,Leilei Zhang,Yusheng Ma,Haohang Song,Mingkang Yang,Huajie Wang,Linchao Fan,Xuesong Li,Yang Liu,Xutang Tao

Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 is a lead-free, zero-dimensional inorganic perovskite noted for its low toxicity, excellent stability, and outstanding optical properties, making it a promising scintillator. Large Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals are attainable by solution- or melt cooling; however, thermal stress associated with temperature changes often degrades processing yield and crystal quality. Here, we report the growth of large Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single crystals (≈3 cm) using a settled temperature and controlled antisolvent diffusion method. The isothermal near-room-temperature growth condition eliminates thermal stress and improves mechanical robustness. The as-grown crystals are readily machined into wafers with high structural integrity, evidenced by a narrow rocking curve FWHM of 20.6″. Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 single-crystal wafers used for γ-ray detection to multiple sources ( 1 3 7 Cs, 2 4 1 Am, 6 0 Co, and 2 2 Na) exhibit outstanding scintillation performance, including a high light yield of 67 500 ph/MeV and an energy resolution of 4.4% ( 1 3 7 Cs). Furthermore, Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystal wafers were utilized as an x-ray imaging screen, achieving a spatial resolution of 19.3 lp/mm at an MTF of 0.2. The developed technique promotes Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 crystals toward ready-for-use applications.

Pressure-assisted cooling to grow ultra-stable Cs3Cu2l5 and CsCu2l3 single crystals for solid-state lighting and visible light communication

Baiqian Wang,Chen Chen,Xin Yang,Wensi Cai,Shuangyi Zhao,Ru Li,Wen Ma,Jiangzhao Chen,Zhigang Zang

Owing to the excellent optical properties, white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) based on metal halide perovskites have attracted great attention as promising light source for solid-state lighting and wireless visible light communication (VLC). However, the instability and toxicity of classic hybrid lead halides hinder their practical applications. Here, a pressure-assisted cooling method is developed to grow lead-free Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and CsCu 2 I 3 single crystals, which exhibit more excellent stability, larger size and uniform orientations in comparison with pressure-free cooling method. Then, both single crystals are used as the emitters of WLEDs without encapsulation, exhibiting a high Color Rendering Index of 91, a decent Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinate of (0.33, 0.33), a proper Correlated Color Temperature of 5436 K, as well as an excellent 1350-h operating stability at atmosphere. Furthermore, the prepared WLEDs are utilized in wireless VLC, which possesses a −3 dB bandwidth of 10.1 MHz.

Dual-Functional Optoelectronic Devices Composed of Cs3Cu2I5/Graphene/Ge Multi-Heterostructures Enabling Deep-Ultraviolet Synaptic Behavior and Near-Infrared Photodetection

Chao Xie,Deng Ke,Shunzi Li,Yuhang Shan,Can Fu,Xingang Ren,Liangpan Yang,Wenhua Yang,Zhixiang Huang

Multi-functional optoelectronic devices that integrate the capacities of neuromorphic processing and photodetection are of pivotal importance for advancing optoelectronic techniques. Here, we present a dual-functional optoelectronic device based on a multi-heterostructure of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /graphene/Ge, which realizes high-performance deep-ultraviolet (DUV) synaptic behavior and self-driven near-infrared (NIR) photodetection simultaneously. On one hand, the device leverages the photogating effect in the Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /graphene heterostructure to produce persistent photo-conductivity, emulating synaptic behavior upon DUV light stimulation. Electron trapping by introducing B 4 PyMPM as capture sites significantly promotes spatial divorcement of photocarriers, guaranteeing remarkably improved synaptic characteristics. The utilizations in DUV fingerprint recognition with an accuracy of 97.8%, and optoelectronic reservoir computing with recognition accuracy reaching 100% for three 4-bit numbers are demonstrated. On the other hand, the device utilizes the photovoltaic effect in the graphene/Ge heterostructure to generate photoresponse at zero working bias, enabling self-driven photodetection upon NIR light illumination. The wide-bandgap Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 functions as an effective NIR anti-reflection layer to induce a strong light trapping effect, giving rise to boosted photoresponse properties. The excellent photoresponse supports the device in performing single-pixel NIR optical imaging. It is believed that this work is inspiring to the design of high-performance multi-functional optoelectronic devices toward integrated and intelligence applications.
