Graphical The inclusion of carboxylic acid ligands significantly impacts the structural arrangement of the metal core in Cu(I) alkynyl clusters, thereby affecting their fluorescence properties. Furthermore, the incorporation of ferrocene into these clusters has been noted to induce modifications in the electrochemical performance of the Cu(I) alkynyl clusters. Surface ligands play a pivotal role in the functional design of atomically precise Cu(I) nanoclusters. They act as protective agents, ensuring the stability of the Cu(I) clusters, while also influencing their structure and properties. This study delves into the synthesis, structure, and properties of innovative Cu(I) nanoclusters co-stabilized by carboxylic acid and alkynyl ligands. The findings reveal that these surface ligands wield a significant impact on the cluster's structure and can even modulate the luminescent characteristics of the Cu(I) alkynyl clusters. Moreover, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations shed light on how different carboxylic acid ligands affect the UV-visible absorptivity of paired Cu(I) clusters. In addition, ferrocene carboxylic acids were employed as protective ligands to impart electrochemical properties to the Cu(I) clusters. This research presents an effective methodology for synthesizing atomically precise Cu(I) clusters shielded by carboxylic acid ligands.

Ergothioneine (ESH) is one of the most abundant antioxidants in the human body, but its biological functions remain unclear. In this work, we elucidated the detailed mechanism of the deactivation of divalent copper ions Cu(II) by ESH using optical spectroscopy, NMR, and LC-MS. We found that the reduction of Cu(II) ions to Cu(I) by ESH occurs in a bimolecular reaction of CuII(ES−)2complexes, leading to the formation of the disulfide ESSE. Cu(I) ions remain bound in stable complexes with ESH, preventing their reactions with molecular oxygen. Over longer timescales, ESSE decomposes, regenerating reduced ESH and forming the final reaction product, hercynine (EH). The conversion of one ESH molecule to EH causes the reduction of four Cu(II) ions. We determined the rate constants of the bimolecular reaction between CuII(ES−)2complexes to be k3= (8 ± 4) × 104M−1s−1and of ESSE hydrolysis to be k4= (1.7 ± 0.4) × 10−5s−1and also estimated the formation constant K12≈ 1.2 × 1017M−2for the CuII(ES−)2complex. The high efficiency of Cu(II) reduction and the chelation of the resulting Cu(I) ions in a stable complex supports the hypothesis that protecting cells from oxidation by metal ions is likely one of the main functions of ESH.

Chelating Cu from tumors has been verified as an effective and promising strategy for cancer therapy through antiangiogenesis. However, systematic removal Cu by injecting with Cu chelators will result unavoidable side effects, since Cu is indispensable to the body. In this work, a micelle targeting to tumors' newborn vessels based on a polypeptide was developed to co-load DOX and Probe X, which can go through an “OFF-to-ON” procedure to report the Cu + -capture events in vivo in a real-time way by giving near infrared (NIR) fluorescence and photoacoustic signal. By co-delivering antiangiogenesis and chemotherapeutic reagents, the tumor can be significantly suppressed, meanwhile with a low systematic toxicity. Hopefully, this work can offer new insights in designing sophisticated antitumor strategy.

There exists an obvious contradiction between Cu(III) generation and Cu(I) contribution in reductants enhanced Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process because the involved electron transfer pathways were always ignored in previous studies. This study investigated the MXene-mediated electron transfer mechanism in Cu(II)/PMS for the first time. The introduction of MXene significantly promoted atrazine degradation under acidic condition because the in-situ generation of Cu(I) was an excellent activator for PMS. Under alkaline condition, although addition of MXene generated a large amount of Cu(I), the degradation of atrazine was inhibited due to that the conversion of Cu(I) to Cu(III) was interrupted. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) altered the reactive intermediate species from Cu(III) (two-electron transfer) to hydroxyl radical (HO • ) and sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ) (one-electron transfer) under alkaline condition. This work proposed a novel MXene-mediated electron transfer mechanism and improved the understanding of Cu(III)/Cu(I) transformation pathway.

Herein, we report a base promoted dibromination of enamides using CBr4 as a bromine source to provide expedient access to β,β-dibrominated secondary enamides. Preliminary synthetic application study shows that these novel products can be readily transformed to 5-Br oxazoles via Cu(I) catalyzed intramolecular cyclization in good yields.

Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites have attracted much interest in solid-state lighting and displays, but the toxicity and instability of lead halide are obstacles to their industrial applications, which must be overcome. As an alternative, Cu(I)-based hybrid metal halides have emerged as a new type of luminescent material owing to their diversified structure, adjustable luminescence, low toxicity and low cost. Herein, we report three one-dimensional (1D) hybrid Cu(I)-based halides with the general formula ACu2Br4 (A = [(Me)4-Pipz]2+ and [BuDA]2+ and [TMEDA]2+). These 1D hybrid Cu(I) halides display stable broadband blue emission with maximum emission peaks in the range of 445–474 nm and the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of 37.8%. Furthermore, in-depth experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the broadband blue emissions originate from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons. Most importantly, there is no structural degradation and attenuation of emission intensity even after continuously soaking these halides in water for at least two months, demonstrating their ultra-high anti-water stability. Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that a large number of weak hydrogen bonds can protect the inorganic skeleton from degradation due to water. This work provides a new strategy for the design of water-stable Cu(I)-based halides with efficient blue emission and wide potential applications in humid environments.

Magnesium Hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising hydrogen storage material but suffers from a high dehydrogenation temperature and sluggish sorption kinetics, which hinder its practical application. Accordingly, we report the use of a Cu-based metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) derived carbon material as a catalyst for optimizing the MgH 2 hydrogen storage performance. The MgH 2 containing 10 wt% HKUST-1 (denoted as MgH 2 -HKUST-1) exhibits a maximum dehydrogenation temperature of 50 °C, much lower than pure MgH 2 . Additionally, it demonstrates enhanced hydrogenation dynamics: it adsorbs 6.4 wt% H 2 within 240 s when heated to 350 °C, and even at 200 °C, it still captures 5.7 wt% H 2 in 60 min. Moreover, the dehydrogenation activation energy is 85.01 kJ per mole of H 2 , showing a marked reduction compared to pure MgH 2 . Furthermore, the excellent H 2 storage performance perhaps stems from the synergistic interaction of Cu 2+ /Cu + redox reactions, mechanochemical size effects, and in situ carbon scaffolding.

The combustion of thiophene sulfides in fuel leads to the release of sulfur oxides (SO x ), which pose significant threats to both ecological systems and human health. Adsorption desulfurization has gained considerable attention from researchers due to its mild operating conditions, low production costs, and minimal impact on octane number. This study investigates the use of Cu-BTC as a platform for developing a novel adsorbent aimed at efficiently removing thiophenic compounds from fuel. Aluminum atoms were incorporated into the framework of Cu-BTC to create micro/mesoporous Al/Cu-BTC. Subsequently, the π-complexation adsorbent Al/Cu(I)-BTC, featuring Lewis acid sites, was synthesized through the in-situ reduction of Al/Cu-BTC using sodium thiosulfate. The adsorption properties of Al/Cu(I)-BTC for thiophene were assessed through both batch and breakthrough experiments. Al/Cu(I)-BTC-0.10(0.28) demonstrated exceptional adsorption performance. The static and dynamic adsorption capacities of thiophene at 500 and 200 ppm were 18.54 mg S/g and 9.49 mg S/g, respectively. Importantly, the adsorption capacity of Al/Cu(I)-BTC-0.10 (0.28) for thiophene in fuel containing 500 ppm sulfur remained at 15.45 mg S/g after six regeneration cycles. In the competitive adsorption of toluene, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for thiophene in the fuel containing 200 ppm sulfur was 7.84 mg S/g.

Modulating the release of Cu(I) ions from copper-based antifoulants is of notable engineering and scientific importance. However, this approach remains challenging because of a lack of valence-stabilizing protection strategies for Cu(I) sites and the poorly characterized releasing behavior of Cu(I) ions. To address these issues, a novel multivalent antifoulant Cu(I, II)-metal–organic framework (Cu(I, II)-BTC; BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was synthesized via an in situ reduction of Cu(II)-BTC under mild conditions. The framework structure of Cu(I, II)-BTC was examined in detail using X-ray diffraction, N 2 sorption analysis, and transmission electron microscopy–selected-area electron diffraction. For the first time, the release behavior of Cu(I) from Cu(I, II)-BTC submerged in seawater was characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry. The chemical state of the copper sites in the Cu(I, II)-BTC complex was determined before and after submersion in fresh seawater to investigate whether the framework structure facilitated the retention of Cu(I) ions. Further, the bactericidal activity of Cu(I, II)-BTC was evaluated by measuring the intracellular reactive oxygen species levels to reveal the biocidal effect of the released Cu(I) ions. Finally, the antifouling performance of the resulting Cu(I, II)-BTC-based antifouling coating was comprehensively evaluated via laboratory bioassays (using fouling bacteria and barnacle larvae as test organisms) and long-term marine field trials. This study offers viable avenues for designing novel antifoulants and developing an in-depth understanding of the copper-mediated antifouling process.

In recent years, the study of Cu (Ӏ) precursors in high-performance CdTe thin-film solar cell devices has received increasing attention. However, few studies have been reported on nanoscale Cu (I) precursors in large-area CdTe devices (≥1 cm 2 ). Here, three different Cu (Ӏ) nano precursors have been rapidly prepared by solution method (CuCl ethanol solution, CuI acetonitrile solution, and CuSCN aqueous ammonia solution) and their effects on the performance of commercial large-area CdTe thin-film solar cells have been investigated. The results show that the distribution amount and uniformity of the nano precursor particles on the CdTe back surface have a large impact on the device performance. The CuCl nanoparticles are more uniformly distributed and the device performance is more excellent. CuI nanoparticles easily formed clusters at grain boundaries. Denser distribution of CuSCN nanoparticles . The thermal diffusion conditions (temperature, time and precursor concentration) have a significant effect on the device performance, but the most reasonable thermal diffusion conditions tend to be the same for all devices. This suggests that the thermal diffusion conditions are determined by the nature of the CdTe absorber layer itself and are not interfered by different nano precursors.

A designed ligand-accelerated Cu(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction was monitored for the first time by real time infrared analysis technique based on ATR-FTIR principles. Principal components analysis (PCA) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2Dcos) results showed that the consumption of alkyne and azide took place successively followed by the formation of the product 1,2,3-triazole, and a 1:1 complex of two reactants would be formed in the reaction process. The rate-determining step of the CuAAC reaction was also experimentally confirmed for the first time to be the transition of azide−alkyne 1:1 complex to the preproduct 1,2,3-triazole. Our results are in good conformity with the current catalytic mechanism proposed by Sharpless et al. according to DFT calculation results.

The optical properties of doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are strongly affected by the dopant position inside the host lattice. However, controlling the dopant position in Cu(I) doped core/shell semiconductor NCs is still unexplored due to the high ionic mobility of Cu(I) ions at the doping temperature. In this paper, we report the doping of Cu(I) ions into CdS/ZnS core/shell NCs via a cation exchange strategy. During the doping, the exciton emission of CdS NCs is reduced and the dopant emission becomes intensified as the doping level is increased from 0 to 1.1%, and the PL profile of the final product is very similar to that of uncoated CdS:Cu(I) NCs. Such an optical change is very different from that observed in the products synthesized by a conventional method, in which no exciton emission of CdS NCs is observed. During the Cu(I) doping process, the variation of the dopant emission may arise from the doping position change from the outside ZnS shell to the inside CdS core in the CdS/ZnS core/shell NCs. The deduction can be further verified by the optical change by direct heating of a small amount of Cu(I) doped CdS/ZnS NCs in a non-coordinating solvent. This work offers a cation exchange strategy for fabricating Cu(I) doped core/shell NCs with tuned dopant positions, which will open up rich opportunities for tuning the optoelectronic properties of Cu(I) doped semiconductor NCs.
