The interplay between ZnS shelling reaction and cation exchange affected the genuine nanostructure of the multinary Cu–In–S-based nanocrystals (NCs), which arose from the dosage and injection speed of Zn precursors as well as the surface of the seed NCs. The effects of Zn precursors on the growth of Cu–In–Zn–S NCs have been previously reported. However, effective control of cation exchange based on the surface of seed NCs is still lacking. Herein, a seed-mediated growth method was developed to eliminate the instability of free ligands and ions on the seed NCs. The clean surface of seed NCs was critical for balancing the internal cation exchange and epitaxial shelling reaction of NCs. Importantly, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the Cu–In–Zn–S NCs has been improved without peak shift through this method. In this dynamic balanced process, the as-obtained Cu–In–Zn–S NCs were confirmed to be gradient alloyed structures rather than core-shell structures. Furthermore, this method can be used to synthesize green- and red-emission Cu-In-Zn-S NCs as well. This seed-mediated strategy through simple redispersion may pave a way toward the controllable synthesis of NCs with gradient alloyed structures.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is an effective approach to capture CO 2 and convert it into value-added chemicals and fuels, thereby reducing excess CO 2 emissions. Recent reports have shown that copper-based catalysts exhibit excellent performance in converting CO 2 into multi-carbon compounds and hydrocarbons. However, the selectivity to the coupling products is poor. Therefore, tuning CO 2 -reduction selectivity toward C 2+ products over Cu-based catalyst is one of the most important issues in CO 2 RR. Herein, we prepare a nanosheet catalyst with interfaces of Cu 0 /Cu + . The catalyst achieves Faraday efficiency (FE) of C 2+ over 50% in a wide potential window between − 1.2 V to − 1.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). Moreover, the catalyst exhibits maximum FE of 44.5% and 58.9% towards C 2 H 4 and C 2+ , with a partial current density of 10.5 mA cm −2 at − 1.4 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the interface of Cu 0 /Cu + facilitates C C coupling to form C 2+ products, while inhibits CO 2 conversion to C 1 products.

Precisely controlling active-site architecture is key for non-noble metal oxide catalysts in volatile organic compounds elimination. Herein, we demonstrate that lattice-doped Cu, rather than surface-loaded Cu, plays a decisive role in regulating the coordination environment and defect chemistry of MnO 2 , thereby fundamentally enhancing its toluene oxidation performance. Combined theoretical and experimental studies reveal that lattice-doped Cu creates a favorable coordination environment by significantly reducing oxygen vacancy formation energy and increasing electron density near the Fermi level. As a result, the Cu-Mn catalyst achieves 90 % toluene conversion at 218 °C, outperforming surface-loaded Cu/Mn (229 °C) and pristine MnO 2 (250 °C). The enhanced activity originates from the coupled increase of Mn 3 + species and oxygen vacancies, which synergistically improves reducibility and oxygen activation. In-situ DRIFTS further demonstrates that lattice-doped Cu facilitates aromatic ring opening and accelerates deep oxidation pathways. In addition, the Cu-Mn catalyst exhibits excellent hydrothermal stability under humid conditions, underscoring its practical potential. This work establishes a clear structure-activity-mechanism relationship and highlights lattice Cu doping as a general strategy for designing efficient non-noble metal oxide catalysts for VOC abatement.

Syngas (CO + H 2 ) is the incredibly important feedstock for producing synthetic fuels and various value-added chemicals. CO 2 electrochemical reduction to syngas is an environmental-friendly and sustainable approach, but still challenging to produce tunable syngas with a wide ratio of CO/H 2 . Herein, by modulating the structure and phase, we have successfully obtained a series of copper-indium (Cu-In) catalysts, which are efficient for producing syngas with tunable CO/H 2 ratios. A series of CuIn bimetallic catalysts with different structures from hollow sphere to two-layer hollow sphere and different phases from CuO to Cu 2 O are developed. We find that the CO and H 2 are the only gaseous products, in which the CO/H 2 ratios can be readily tuned from 1.2 ± 0.1 to 9.0 ± 1.5 by simply controlling the thermal annealing temperature. It also exhibits high durability during a 10-h test. The unique performance is attributed to the modulated In enrichment on the Cu surfaces during the CO 2 reduction reaction, which causes the differences in binding energies for key reaction intermediates, thus resulting in the tunable composition of syngas. The present work emphasizes a simple yet efficient phase and structure modulating strategy for designing potential electrocatalysts for producing syngas with widely tunable CO/H 2 ratios.

CuInSe2 quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most important Cd-free fluorescent probes; they usually exhibited low fluorescence intensity, suggesting that a considerable amount of absorbed photon energy was lost as heat. In this study we aimed to improve the fluorescence intensity of CuInSe2 QDs and investigate their photoacoustic (PA) signal resulting from the heat dissipation, which was previously rarely reported. Cu–In–Zn–Se/ZnSe QDs were synthesized by adopting two strategies of Zn doping and ZnSe shell growth. It was found that there was an upper limit for Zn concentration beyond which the fluorescence intensity began to decrease. In addition, a blue shift of the emission peak of Cu–In–Zn–Se/ZnSe QDs was observed at high concentrations of ZnSe precursor due to the diffusion of excessive Zn. To prepare the dual-modal fluorescence and PA imaging probe, poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (PMAO) modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) was coated on the QDs, which led to a slight reduction in fluorescence. Cellular labeling on HeLa cells was performed to demonstrate the utility of these probes for fluorescence imaging. We further studied the in vitro PA imaging capabilities of the Cu–In–Zn–Se/ZnSe/PMAO-g-PEG nanoparticles, which showed a distinct PA signal beyond 1.0 mg ml−1. The current work demonstrated that a moderate amount of Zn doping is necessary for enhancing fluorescence and there is a limit beyond which the fluorescence will be diminished. We also demonstrated the proof of concept that Cu–In–Zn–Se/ZnSe QDs are able to serve as a potential PA imaging contrast agent.

A non-hydrazine solution process has been considered as a promising way for the deposition of Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2(CIGSSe) thin films. However, from our previous work, the presence of a fine-grained layer in the absorber layer was shown to be an obstacle to further improve the solar cell efficiency. Here, an improved fabrication route is proposed to solve this problem. A mixture of Cu2S, In2Se3, Ga and Se was simultaneously dissolved in 1,2-ethanedithiol and 1,2-ethylenediamine, forming a homogeneous precursor solution to deposit CIGSSe nanocrystal films. By optimizing the selenization method by using rapid thermal processing (RTP) combined with an improved graphite box, large grains throughout the whole absorber layer were successfully obtained. Based on such a high-quality CIGSSe absorber layer, an encouraging power conversion efficiency of 11.8% has been achieved with a Jsc of 28.25 mA cm−2, a Voc of 596 mV and a FF of 69.79% and without an antireflection coating.

It is promising to develop next-generation indoor and outdoor flexible electroluminescent light sources, as thin as wallpaper, by converting electric energy into light directly based on semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). This work reports a sunlike full-spectrum electroluminescent white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated by spin-coating the mixture of yellow-green, red, and blue QDs at once, adopting the device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK(PTAA)/Mixed QDs/ZnO:Mg (AP-ZnO)/Al(Ag). The yellow-green and red QDs are prepared by coating three-layer ZnS shells on the CuInS2 cores, which are synthesized using sulfur powder and dodecanethiol (DDT) as sulfur source, respectively. The blue QDs are prepared by coating three-layer ZnS shells on ZnCuGaS2 cores. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the yellow-green, red, and blue QDs is 82%, 89%, and 83%, respectively. The WLED emits warm white light with a color temperature of 3000 K, chromaticity CIE (0.4228, 0.4287), and color rendering index (CRI) Ra 92.4. The electroluminescence spectrum of the device, whose similarity to the solar spectrum reaches 91.7% in the wavelength region of 450–700 nm, is rich in the red component and poor in the blue component, showing great potential for future healthy lighting applications.

Cu and Co serve as interconnect metals in back-end-of-line (BEOL) integrated circuit fabrication. Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) achieves planarization through chemical oxidation and dissolution by slurry components, which inevitably causes excessive corrosion and surface defects. Consequently, a critical aspect of metal CMP slurry engineering involves suppressing surface defects from both electrochemical and triboelectrochemical effects. Selecting effective corrosion inhibitors is crucial for optimizing both material removal rate and surface quality. In this work, typical azole inhibitor 1, 2, 4-triazaole (TAZ) was systematically evaluated for both the Cu and Co polishing slurries. Corrosion kinetics and thermodynamic parameters were determined by analyzing temperature-dependent corrosion current density variations. Electrochemical results demonstrate that TAZ significantly elevates apparent corrosion activation energies from 13.84 to 20.98 kJ·mol⁻¹ for Co and 13.51–44.78 kJ·mol⁻¹ for Cu, while achieving superior inhibition efficiency for Cu ( η = 80.97 % at 2 mM) compared to Co ( η = 30.68 % at 10 mM). KPFM and DFT calculations confirm substantially increased work function on Cu surfaces even at low TAZ concentrations. Moreover, triboelectrochemical measurements reveal divergent friction-driven mechanisms where mechanical action enhances cathodic processes on Co, shown by positive OCP shifts, but promoting anodic dissolution on Cu through negative OCP shifts. TAZ effectively mitigates tribocorrosion by forming lubricating adsorption layers that reduce coefficients of friction by over 40 % and suppress material loss. These insights provide a fundamental basis for the rational screening and selection of inhibitors optimized for dynamic CMP conditions.

I–III–VI quantum dots (QDs), as a new class of light-emitting materials, have aroused a great of attention for an impressive variety of applications. A facile one-pot approach was employed to synthesize highly luminescent Cu–In–Zn–S/ZnS (CIZS/ZnS) core/shell QDs. It was found that the CIZS/ZnS QDs prepared using sodium sulfide as sulfur source exhibited the strongest emission due to its highest chemical reactivity as compared to thiourea and thioacetamide. The combination of GSH content and pH value played a crucial role in the growth of ZnS shell, which was responsible for the bright emission of QDs. The surface defects of QDs could be effective passivated by GSH, which exhibited a significant improvement of emission intensity. The optimum pH value of 7 was also established due to the fact that the deprotonized sulfhydryl group of GSH molecule strongly coordinated with Zn 2+ at neutral pH value. Moreover, the particle size and composition of the CIZS/ZnS QDs can be well adjusted by tuning the n Zn / n CuInZn ratios. The maximum quantum yield (QY) of CIZS/ZnS QDs increased from 5.95% to 26.12%, accompanying by the improvement of the radiative decay rate from 1.90 × 10 5 to 5.64 × 10 5 s −1 . Furthermore, a blue LED-pumped white light-emitting diode (WLED) device was realized by combining yellow-orange CIZS/ZnS QDs with green Lu 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphor, achieving a luminous efficacy (LE) of 66.9 lm/W, and color rendering index (CRI) of 87.2, which demonstrated their great application potential in solid-state lighting field.

Non-cadimum photoluminescent I−III−VI semiconductor nanocrystals have attracted increasing attention due to their low toxicity, extraordinary optical and electronic properties. Herein, water-soluble quaternary Cu-In-Zn-S quantum dots (CIZS QDs) with tunable emission from 535 nm to 645 nm were successfully synthesized via ecofriendly one-pot aqueous method. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the emissions are about 68 nm–88 nm, which are rather narrow among Cu-based semiconductors and preferred to facilitate improving color purity. The photoluminescence of water-soluble QDs was enhanced by ZnS coating with the absolute quantum yield (QY) up to 30.8%. Further, a novel fluorescent sensor for Cu 2+ detection was developed based on the alteration of intrinsic optical properties of the CIZS/ZnS QDs after cation exchange at room temperature within 10 min, presenting a linear range of 0.020–20 μM and a detection limit down to 6.7 nM. Mechanism studies revealed that the QDs served as the template for cation exchange, through UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra in combination with the chemical composition and time-resolved photoluminescence decay analysis. Ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the QDs towards Cu 2+ and the sensor showed comparable accuracy to ICP-AES method as well as good performance in real sample detection, manifesting the reliability of the current strategy for sensing Cu 2+ mildly and rapidly.

Group I–III–VI ternary chalcogenides have attracted extensive attention as important functional semiconductors. Among them, Cu–In–S compounds have seen strong research interest due to their potential applications in high-efficiency solar cells. However, the controllable synthesis of Cu–In–S nanostructures with different phases is always difficult. In this research, zinc-blende CuInS2, wurtzite CuInS2, and spinel CuIn5S8 could be selectively synthesized using spinel In3–xS4 as the precursor by a simple solvothermal method. X-ray powder diffraction was used to determine the phase and crystal structure, and transmission electron microscopy was employed to characterize the morphologies of the as-prepared samples. Experiments showed that the acidity–basicity of the reaction system and the coordination and reducibility of the capping ligands were crucial to the final phases of the products. The UV–vis–NIR spectra of the three phases all exhibited a broad-band absorption over the entire visible light and extending into the near-infrared region, and the zinc-blende, wurtzite, and spinel Cu–In–S nanocrystals showed band gaps of 1.55, 1.54, and 1.51 eV, respectively, which indicates their potential applications in thin-film solar cells.

HOF/HOF-based Z-scheme heterojunctions were successfully synthesized. • Z-scheme heterojunctions and Cu single atoms boost charge separation. • TCPP(M)-HOF/PFC-1 exhibits the highest H 2 evolution rate of 42.7 mmol g −1 h −1 . Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have exhibited extraordinarily broad application prospects in the field of photocatalysis owing to their unique structural merits. Nevertheless, pristine HOF materials generally suffer from the bottleneck of low separation efficiency for photogenerated charge carriers, which severely restricts their practical industrial applications in photocatalysis. To address this issue, herein we have successfully constructed a series of Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalysts based on the two-dimensional HOF/HOF system (denoted as TCPP (H or M)-HOF/PFC-1, where M = Cu, Zn, Ni), with the targeted composite heterostructure fabricated from TCPP(Cu)-HOF and PFC-1 HOF as the core product. Among them, the porphyrin-based TCPP(Cu)-HOF effectively broadens the spectral response range of light absorption for the composite; the precise construction of the Z -scheme heterojunction greatly enhances the separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated charges; meanwhile, the single-atom Cu sites (Cu-SA) can significantly shorten the charge migration pathway and accelerate the directional and rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, ultimately enabling the efficient conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. Furthermore, the excellent energy level matching between TCPP(Cu)-HOF and PFC-1 HOF in the composite, coupled with the synergistic regulation of single-atom active sites, further facilitates the efficient directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Experimental test data confirm that the optimized TCPP(Cu)-HOF/PFC-1 heterojunction photocatalyst delivers a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of up to 42.7 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This work fully demonstrates the outstanding advantages of HOF/HOF Z -scheme heterostructures in precisely tailoring photogenerated charge carrier dynamics, providing a novel and feasible research strategy for efficiently boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and designing high-performance heterojunction catalysts for solar energy conversion. Here, we present a Z -scheme heterojunction photocatalyst based on two-dimensional HOF/HOF composites, specifically TCPP(M)-HOF/PFC-1 (M = Cu, Zn, Ni), with TCPP(Cu)-HOF and PFC-1 HOF as the representative system. Owing to the favorable energy level alignment between the two HOF components and the introduction of single-atom Cu sites, the directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers is significantly enhanced.
