In situ growth of Ni/Cu-BTC nanocatalysts on rGO surfaces: electrochemical sensors for glucose detection

Jiangnan Chen,Zhouchao Wang,Lin Xu,Huifang Wang,Xianghua Gao,Baolong Niu,Wenfeng Li

In the realm of glucose detection, nickel-based and copper-based nanocomposites have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional catalytic performance and high sensitivity. This study realized linear detection across dual concentration ranges in alkaline media by in situ growing Ni/Cu-BTC spherical nanocatalysts on reduced graphene oxide (rGO). From 350 μM to 2.95 mM, with a low detection limit (LOD L ) of 21.7 μM (S/N = 3) and a sensitivity (S L ) of 40 nA mM −1  cm −2 ; from 2.95 mM to 9.45 mM, the high-concentration detection limit (LOD H ) is 1.1 mM (S/N = 3), with an improved sensitivity (S H ) of 165.7 nA mM −1  cm −2 . The response time (t) is under 2 s. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated robust interference resistance, excellent stability (%RSD = 3.57 %), repeatability (%RSD = 2.27 %), and reproducibility (%RSD = 2.34 %). In real-world sample testing, this sensor measured glucose concentrations in plasma from healthy individuals both on an empty stomach and half an hour after eating, with a relative standard deviation range of 0.94 %–2.33 %. These results suggest that the rGO-Ni/Cu-BTC composite is a promising enzyme-free electrochemical sensing material for glucose detection

Green nanozyme, rapid sensing: A DES-synthesized Cu-BTC platform for rapid tetracycline detection in food

Xin Li,Kaigang An,Shuang Zhang,Jing He,Huifeng Liu,Hongdeng Qiu,Yiqun Wan,Jia Chen

Rapid detection of antibiotic residues in food is essential for public health. This study aims to develop a highly sensitive colorimetric sensing platform based on a novel nanozyme. To this end, we used a green, tunable, and safe choline chloride/urea-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) to synthesize a metal organic framework, Cu-BTC (BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate), with many highly dispersed copper active sites. As a result, the prepared Cu-BTC showed strong peroxidase-like activity. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), it efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to the blue product TMBox. Importantly, we found that tetracycline (TC) specifically and significantly inhibits this color reaction. The inhibition occurred because TC can directly reduce the blue TMBox, suppressing color development. Based on this effect, we developed a new colorimetric method for sensitive TC analysis. The method had a wide linear range (0.025-25 μM) and a very low detection limit (0.0024 μM). Moreover, it was successfully applied to accurately detect TC in complex food matrices such as milk and honey. Thus, this work not only provides a green route to synthesize high-performance nanozymes, but also establishes a simple, fast, and sensitive colorimetric platform for on-site detection of antibiotic residues in food.

Effect of Cu-BTC-Modified Carbon Fiber on Interfacial and Mechanical Properties of Polyethylene Matrix Composites

Shuzhen Guo,Shanshan Xu,Yuhao Ma

Carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polyethylene (PE) composites have low density, outstanding corrosion resistance and good processability. These materials are widely promising for household appliances, automobiles and construction industries. Nevertheless, PE is a non-polar inert matrix with extremely low surface energy, leading to poor interfacial wettability and bonding force with CF. Interfacial debonding frequently occurs along with low load transfer efficiency, failing to meet the service requirements of high-performance structural components. In this study, CF was carboxylated with hydrogen peroxide, and Cu-BTC porous materials were in situ grown on the fiber surface to obtain modified CF (CF-Cu-BTC). The CF-Cu-BTC was then incorporated into a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix. The MOF layer improves the interfacial compatibility and bonding force between the fibers and the matrix and enhances the overall mechanical properties and structural stability of the composites. The mechanical performance of CF composites is remarkably superior to that of pure LDPE. Compared with the pristine sample with a tensile strength of 11.04 MPa, the composite exhibits an enhanced tensile strength of 26.63 MPa, an increase of 141.20%. Scanning electron microscopy results confirm that no gaps exist between the CF and LDPE, verifying favorable interfacial compatibility. MOF-modified CF effectively improves the mechanical properties of resin-based composites. This study provides practical guidance for advanced composite applications.

Facile hydrophobic modification of Cu-BTC for enhanced extraction and detection of trace phenolics in water

Luping Feng,Leikeqing Shen,Xueping Dang,Huaixia Chen

Copper 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) holds promise for adsorption applications due to its high specific surface area, yet its aqueous instability severely restricts practical use. To overcome this limitation, a novel hydrophobic modification strategy using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was developed to significantly enhance the structural stability of Cu-BTC in water. Capitalizing on this improved stability, the modified Cu-BTC-IPA was integrated with the conductive polymer 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) through electrodeposition copolymerization, creating a robust Cu-BTC-IPA@PEDOT composite coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). This developed coating enabled the establishment of a highly sensitive direct immersion SPME-GC-FID method for the efficient extraction and detection of six trace phenolic compounds. The resulting coating exhibited extraction capacities 2–8 times higher than the PEDOT and 6–40 times greater than the commercial PDMS coating. Adsorption mechanisms were elucidated through isotherm studies and electrostatic potential mapping. The established method exhibited low detection limits (0.01–0.08 μg L −1 ), a wide linear range (0.05–50 μg L −1 ), and was successfully applied to the analysis of five environmental water samples, yielding satisfactory recoveries ranging from 87.2 % to 117.9 %.

Facile one-pot synthesis of Cu-BTC metal-organic frameworks supported Keggin phosphomolybdic acid for esterification reactions

Qiuyun Zhang,Caiyan Yue,Liufang Ao,Dandan Lei,Dan Ling,Dan Yang,Yutao Zhang

In the present study, phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) supported on Cu-BTC Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared and utilized as a solid acid catalyst. The structure of the synthesized materials was characterized by using powder XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, TG, and NH3-TPD techniques. These results exposed that HPMo was successfully encapsulated in the Cu-BTC cage and the Keggin structure of HPMo was maintained in the composite catalyst. In addition, the catalytic activity and recovery properties of the HPMo/Cu-BTC catalyst for the esterification of oleic acid with methanol into biodiesel were evaluated. These results showed that the HPMo/Cu-BTC catalyst exhibited high conversion (93.7%) and excellent reusability due to its mesoporous structure, excellent acidic activity, high BET surface area, large pore volume, and good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the kinetic studies of the esterification reaction revealed that it follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a low activation energy of 37.5 KJ/mol. More interestingly, it shows potential application for esterification of free fatty acids (FFAs) or pretreatment of low-cost feedstocks contain high FFAs content for the green production of biodiesel.

Photoelectrochemical determination of malathion by using CuO modified with a metal-organic framework of type Cu-BTC

Cao Yu,Wang Luona,Wang Chengyin,Su Dawei,Liu Yunling,Hu Xiaoya

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed for the detection of non-electroactive malathion. It is based on the use of a hierarchical CuO material derived from a Cu-BTC metal-organic framework (where BTC stands for benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). The modified CuO was obtained by calcination of Cu-BTC at a high temperature (300 °C) and possesses a high photocurrent conversion efficiency. Under irradiation with visible light and in the presence of malathion, the formation of the CuO-malathion complex on the CuO gave rise to an increase in steric hindrance. This results in a decrease in photocurrent. This novel PEC detection method has a lower detection limit of 8.6 × 10 −11  mol L −1 and a wide linear range (1.0 × 10 −10 ~ 1.0 × 10 −5  mol L −1 ). Schematic presentation of the Cu-BTC MOF derived photoelectrochemical sensor for non-electroactive malathion detection.

Enhanced Methylene Blue Adsorption by Cu-BTC Metal-Organic Frameworks with Engineered Particle Size Using Surfactant Modulators

Shanli Wang,Lu Zhang,Mingyan Zhang,Licong Xu,Qian Hu,Tao Yang,Kaili Tu,Minghua Wu,Deyou Yu

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring porous structures and large specific surface areas have shown great potential in removing organic pollutants from wastewater via adsorption processes. Although the particle size of MOFs determines the adsorption performance (something known as the size-dependent effect), engineering it into desirable dimensions for enhancing the adsorption performance is a great challenge. Here, we develop a practical and facile approach to regulate the particle size of copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) adsorbents with high tunability by screening the functional modulator of various surfactants adding in hydrothermal synthesis procedure. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the particle size of Cu-BTC was systematically investigated. The results show that the nonionic surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) demonstrated the greatest ability to control the particle size of Cu-BTC among other counterparts (e.g., N, N, N-trimethyl-1-dodecanaminium bromide (DTAB), polyethylene glycol (PEG1000), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)). By increasing the PVP concentration to 0.14 mmol L−1, the average particle size of Cu-BTC could be correspondingly reduced by more than ten times, reaching to a comparative smaller value of 2.4 μm as compared with the reported counterparts. In addition, the PVP allowed a large increase of the surface area of Cu-BTC according to porosity analysis, resulting in a great enhancement of methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The PVP-modulated Cu-BTC showed fast adsorption kinetics for MB removal accompanied with a maximum adsorption capacity of 169.2 mg g−1, which was considerably competitive with most of the analogs reported. Therefore, our study may inspire concepts for engineering the particle size of Cu-BTCs with improved properties for more practical applications.Keywords:Cu-BTC;particle size;adsorption;surfactant;modulator

Electrochemically synthesized polyanine@Cu-BTC MOF as a bifunctional matrix for aptasensing of tetracycline in aquatic products

Fengping Zhan,Yanan Zhao,Xiaohui Dai,Jingbin Zeng,Qingxiang Wang

The development of new method for the rapid and facile screening of antibiotics residues in food is of great importance in food safety. Herein, a nanocompisite of polyaniline@copper-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (PAN@Cu-BTC) with excellent electrochemical activity was directly prepared on the screen-printed electrode surface by a two-step electrochemical synthesis method. Then the tetracycline aptamer (TC-Apt) was assembled onto the electrode surface through the coordination between 5′-PO 4 3- on the aptamer and Cu 2+ on the MOF, achieving a novel electrochemical aptasensor for tetracycline (TC). The PAN@Cu-BTC has two functions in the aptasensors, namely the immobilization matrix of the aptamer probe and the internal signal source for target recognition. The electrochemical sensing assays showed that the capture of TC-Apt to the target on the electrode surface could cause the decrease of the electrochemical signal of PAN@Cu-BTC. Based on this, the TC can be analyzed in a wide range from 10 pM to 1 µM, with a low detection limit of 0.32 pM. The recoveries of the aptasensor for the detection of TC from Ctenopharyngodon idella meat were 90.0 %∼102.0 %, indicating that the constructed aptasensor is applicable for the detection of TC residues in fresh aquatic products.

Porous Cu-BTC Metal–Organic Frameworks Anchored on Dialdehyde Wood Sponge as Material for CO2 Capture and Separation

Xupeng Zhang,Zhiping Xu,Kaiqian Li,Xianghong Li,Shuduan Deng,Ying Liu,Gang Zhu

Wood-based substrates decorated with metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) postcarboxylation have garnered significant attention for CO2 capture. However, the practical applicability of composites synthesized via this method is constrained by modification difficulty, low binding strength, and environmentally unfriendly processes. In this work, we introduce an innovative approach that involves the oxidation of hydroxyl groups on wood cellulose C2 and C3 to aldehyde groups, producing a dialdehyde wood sponge (DWS). Subsequently, Cu-BTC MOFs (HKUST-1) were grown in situ in the 3D framework of the wood sponge through chelation. This strategy enhances the affinity between the MOFs and the wood-derived skeleton, significantly increasing the micropore surface area to 402 m2/g, with the micropores primarily concentrated at 0.71 nm. Benefiting from its high MOF load and abundant microporous structure, HKUST-1/DWS achieved a CO2 capture capacity of 2.34 mmol/g (273 K, 1 bar), remarkably surpassing that of HKUST-1/TWS (carboxylated wood sponge by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinooxy), which exhibited a capacity of 1.59 mmol/g. Additionally, the synthesized solid adsorbent demonstrated high CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity (47.95), indicating the potential for efficient CO2 separation. This method of constructing MOF/wood-based CO2 sorbents enables chemical modification and facilitates efficient and sustainable carbon dioxide capture.

Cathodic electrodeposited Cu-BTC MOFs assembled from Cu(II) and trimesic acid for electrochemical determination of bisphenol A

Hu Peng,Zhu Xiaoming,Luo Xiaohui,Hu Xiaofeng,Ji Liudi

The authors describe a novel electrochemical determination method for bisphenol A (BPA) based on the electrosynthesised Cu-BTC (H 3 BTC: trimesic acid) films. Using H 3 BTC as the ligand, Cu(NO 3 ) 2 as the precursor of copper ions, and triethylamine hydrochloride (Et 3 NHCl) as the probase source, Cu-BTC films were directly deposited on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface via cathodic electrochemical reduction under −1.30 V. Considering the electrocatalytic activity of metal center Cu 2+ , Cu-BTC films were applied to construct the electrochemical determination platform for BPA. Chronocoulometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the signal enhancement mechanism. The determination conditions were optimized. As a result, a sensitive electrochemical method was constructed for BPA. The peak currents, best measured at voltage of 0.496 V vs. SCE (KCl saturated calomel reference electrode), increase linearly in the range from 5.0 to 2000 nM. The value of determination limit is 0.72 nM. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine BPA in spiked urine, spiked waste water samples and plastic products. The results were in good agreement with those obtained for the same samples by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Schematics for the construction of electrochemical determination for bisphenol A.

Multipath charge transfer in Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO2 double p-n heterojunction hollow octahedrons for enhanced photocatalytic amine oxidation

Yaxin Ru,Yajie Chen,Xinyan Yu,Qiuyu Zhang,Yuejia Yin,Guohui Tian

Hollow heterostructured catalysts have been widely investigated and applied in photocatalytic organic reactions. However, achieving hybrid catalysts with optimized hollow structure and controllable components is still a challenge. Herein, Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 ternary heterostructure hollow octahedrons were designed and prepared using a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) as both copper source and template. A thin CeO 2 nanolayer was first formed and covered on the prepared Cu-BTC octahedron surface through a hydrothermal process. In the meanwhile, the Cu-BTC octahedrons were controllably etched in this hydrothermal process, leading to the formation of Cu-BTC@CeO 2 hollow octahedron. The following sulfidation reaction produced Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 double p-n heterojunction hollow octahedrons. Benefiting from the novel hollow octahedron double p-n heterojunctions, excellent visible-near infrared light absorption, and fast charge transfer and separation, the obtained Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 hollow octahedron hybrid catalyst exhibited a significantly higher photocatalytic activity toward the oxidative coupling of amines to imines at room temperature under visible-near infrared light irradiation compared to the control single component catalysts (Cu-BTC, CeO 2 , and CuS) and binary hybrid catalysts (Cu-BTC@CeO 2 , Cu-BTC@CuS, and CuS@CeO 2 ). The enhanced charge transfer at the double p-n heterojunction was discussed. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic oxidation products and reaction mechanism were investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and pyridine adsorption FT-IR spectroscopy. This work presents a promising strategy for the design of multi-component hollow heterostructure catalysts.

MXene@Cu-BTC/PPy Carbon with MWCNTs@MoS2 Hierarchical Composite for Electrochemical Detection of Anthracene and Phenanthrene in Licorice

Yili Li,Jinxin Fang,Xinyi Du,Liqiang Deng,Xiaoya Mo,Haijun Huang,Weiguo Cao

Herbal medicines are particularly vulnerable to contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to their relatively long growth cycles and multistep processing. This contamination may compromise the efficacy and safety of the prepared herbal slices. The current work innovatively synthesized a hierarchical composite of MXene@Cu-BTC/PPy carbon with MWCNTs@MoS2 (MCuP350/MWCNTs@MoS2) through a sequential in situ growth approach. The material was characterized by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The electrochemical sensor was prepared based on the MCuP350/MWCNTs@MoS2 composite, which exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity, displaying good linear responses to both anthracene (ANT) and phenanthrene (PHE). The detection limits of the presented sensor were 0.604 μM (ANT) and 0.240 μM (PHE), respectively. In commonly used herbal medicine of licorice, the effectiveness of the developed sensor for detecting ANT and PHE was validated by the standard addition method, with satisfactory recoveries of 100.36%–104.75% and 97.43%–104.44%, respectively. Additionally, the sensor exhibits high selectivity against the potential interfering substances existing in licorice. These results confirm the feasibility of directly detecting PAHs in licorice via the developed sensor without the need for complex sample pretreatment.
