Electrocatalytic reduction reaction of CO2 (CO2RR) into value-added multicarbon (C2+) products represents a sustainable strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the production of high-value chemicals. Cu-based catalysts are optimal for the CO2RR, facilitating the generation of C2+ products such as ethanol, which have significant industrial applications. However, converting CO2 to C2+ products remains a great challenge, necessitating the simultaneous achievement of high current density, Faradaic efficiency (FE), and operational stability for industrial-scale implementation. Herein, we prepared Cu/Cu2O catalysts with diverse morphologies and the ratio of the Cu+/Cu interface, which was rectified by regulating the interactions between the active interface and the intermediate (*CO). The electrochemical analysis demonstrated that reconstructed Cu/Cu2O nanodendrites with dominant grain boundaries exhibited remarkable performance in generating C2+ products, achieving a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 71.8%, including 49.7% FE of ethanol and a substantial partial current density of 390.0 mA cm–2 within the flow cell. In situ spectroscopy characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the increased ethanol selectivity originated from the rectification of the Cu/Cu2O interface by the *CO intermediate, which accelerated H2O dissociation, reduced the free energy for *CO hydrogenation to *COH, and facilitated asymmetric *CO-*COH coupling to preferentially reduce CO2 to ethanol. This study provides profound insights into the C–C coupling pathways and sheds light on the rational design of ethanol-oriented electrocatalysts, contributing to sustainable chemical synthesis and energy utilization.

Developing low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts for electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia (NRA) is of great importance to alleviate increasingly energy demand and environmental pollution. Cu electrodes have been widely explored towards NRA, while high overpotential is always required and ammonia selectivity is relatively low. Herein, Ce-doping Cu electrode is designed and fabricated via electrochemical deposition strategy and its electrocatalytic NRA in alkaline conditions is investigated. Effect of the Ce content on the performance of the Ce-doped Cu electrodes are studied, showing that the Cu 10 Ce 10 demonstrates the best performance. It achieves a high ammonia yield rate of 0.99 mmol h −1 cm −2 , Faradaic efficiency of 98.43%, nitrate conversion rate of 94% and NH 3 selectivity of 79.33%. It is found that Ce-doping Cu electrode could tune electronic structure of Cu by generating Cu/Cu 2 O interfacial structure as active phase, which reduces the overpotential of nitrate reduction and improves the NH 3 selectivity of Cu electrodes.

Porous Cu/Cu2O catalytic materials with a unique pore structure were successfully synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method using Cu-MOF-74 as the intermediate, followed by induced collapse and oxidation. The structural properties and catalytic performance of the as-prepared Cu/Cu2O materials in the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) combined with in situ thermogravimetry–mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The results show that the specific surface area of the Cu/Cu2O material is 46.6697 m2/g, and the average pore diameter is 9.4608 nm. Owing to the synergistic effect of Cu0/Cu+dual sites on promoting electron transfer during AP thermal decomposition, the Cu/Cu2O catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity. Specifically, at a heating rate of 20 °C/min, the addition of 2 wt% Cu/Cu2O reduces the high-temperature decomposition temperature of AP from 473.1 °C to 321.1 °C (a decrease of 151.0 °C), lowers the thermal decomposition activation energy from 296.63 kJ/mol to 253.21 kJ/mol (a reduction of 43.42 kJ/mol), and increases the heat release by 617.8 J/g compared to pure AP. TG-MS analysis revealed that Cu/Cu2O accelerates the decomposition of AP by adsorbing and activating NH3and HClO4generated in the low-temperature decomposition stage, facilitating the formation of reactive intermediates such as ClOₓ and promoting the oxidation of nitrogen-containing species. This study demonstrates that the porous Cu/Cu2O material synthesized by the one-step solvothermal method is a promising catalyst for enhancing the thermal decomposition performance of AP in solid propellants.

Adipic acid is widely used in fine chemical synthesis, biomedicine and other industrial fields, and is a key monomer for the synthesis of nylon-6,6 and nylon-6. Industrially, it is produced by the efficient catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane. However, the activation of the inert C―H bonds in cyclohexane remains a major challenge in the highly selective synthesis of acid products. Using a composite catalyst of copper on a carbon support produced from wood chip biomass, a green catalytic system was established for the one-pot oxidative synthesis of adipic acid from cyclohexane. Wood chips has two functions during pyrolysis: it acts as a carbon support precursor and an in-situ reducing agent, which reduces Cu 2+ into Cu/Cu 2 O active species to obtain Cu/Cu 2 O@C composite catalysts. The abundant defects in biomass carbon form strong coordination interactions with the copper active components, which effectively regulate the electronic distribution of active sites and improve the catalytic performance. Under optimized conditions (100 °C, 12 h), the Cu/Cu 2 O@C-0.1 catalyst achieves a cyclohexane conversion of 19.36% and an adipic acid selectivity of 73.28%. Mechanistic investigations show that the electronic interaction between the biomass carbon support and the copper species strengthens the adsorption of cyclohexanone, which is critical for promoting the selective formation of adipic acid. This study provides a viable strategy for developing eco-friendly, low-cost and high-efficiency advanced catalytic materials. Cu-based compounds are indispensable materials for pseudocapacitors owing to their excellent electrical conductivity and diverse valence states. Their practical performance remains constrained by nanoparticle agglomeration and limited active sites. Herein, a low-temperature pre-oxidation strategy was employed to introduce coal-based carbon surface with abundant C O and = C–H groups, providing uniform anchoring sites for Cu-based compounds. Through flash Joule heating process, these precursors were transformed into a Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S heterostructure intimately (4.6 s) integrated with the carbon substrate. The lattice defects at the heterostructure promote the adsorption and diffusion of ions, while the coexistence of Cu 0 /Cu + redox pairs enhances reversibility of Faradaic reactions. As a result, the optimized Cu@OMC electrode have good specific capacitance (2041 Fg −1 at 1 A g −1 ) in 6 M KOH. It is assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor, which has a high energy density of 60.01 Wh kg −1 , a power density of 800.00 W kg −1 , and a specific capacity retention rate of 97.29 % after 10,000 cycles. This study provides a simple and efficient strategy for the preparation of carbon-supported metal compound electrode materials.

Natural enzymes are efficient catalysts but face high costs and instability, leading to the development of artificial enzymes like nanozymes. While noble metals commonly demonstrate high peroxidase (POD)-like activity, their expense limits their practical use. In contrast, 3d transition metal oxides, though less active, are more cost-effective due to their natural abundance, with Cu(I) emerging as a promising candidate. However, maximizing POD-like activity in small-sized Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) often requires complex synthetic processes and labor-intensive purification, making mass production challenging. To address these issues, it is crucial to develop POD nanozymes with simplified production methods that would reduce costs and facilitate their real-world applications. Herein, we present a straightforward and scalable method for preparing Cu/Cu2O core/shell NPs densely embedded within a porous carbon-based framework by calcining Cu precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at elevated temperatures in nitrogen. The resulting samples with Cu/Cu2O NPs around 15 nm in size can be obtained at temperatures below 600 °C. Importantly, they can be used directly without purification, significantly reducing production costs compared to natural enzymes. The sample obtained at 300 °C, exhibiting the highest Cu(I) content, displays optimal POD-like activity and was further demonstrated in the detection of glutathione and glucose. This study is anticipated to guide the future development of scalable and cost-effective POD nanozymes for practical applications.

Electrochemical reconstruction of electrocatalysts is critical to their practical performances. However, the relevant influencing factors for the evolution process are still rare, restricting the design of high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, using acidic CO 2 electroreduction reaction (CRR) over Cu 2 O as a model system, we systemically studied how organic additives regulate the reconstruction of high-valent Cu species and the CRR mechanism. Theoretical calculations reveal the relationship between additive physicochemical properties and Cu 2 O. Notably, in situ characterization reveals that DMSO strongly interacts with the catalyst, partially reducing Cu 2 O to form a Co-lattice OD-Cu/Cu 2 O heterostructure with interfacial Cu atoms belong to both Cu 2 O and Cu lattices and exhibits an intermediate valence state. Based on the Co-lattice OD-Cu/Cu 2 O, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of C 2 H 4 was up to 67.5% at −1.5 V vs. RHE in H 2 SO 4 & Li 2 SO 4 electrolyte with a low FE H2 of 16.8%. Moreover, the combination achieves a stability of over 100 h in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzes. Simulations uncover that the DMSO-modified Co-lattice OD-Cu/Cu 2 O optimizes *CO adsorption, lowers C–C coupling barriers and promote the generation of C 2 H 4 . Meanwhile, DMSO spontaneously adsorbs on the catalyst surface and effectively inhibits HER. This work deepens the understanding of electrocatalyst reconstruction behavior and contributes to the development of efficient electrocatalytic systems.

Electrochemical detection of histamine (HA) faces a significant challenge: the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) causes substantial background interference at the high potentials required for HA oxidation. To address this, a novel sensing platform was constructed based on an in-situ prepared NiO/Cu/Cu 2 O heterojunction electrode, where the oxygen vacancy (O v ) density was modulated via electrodeposition to significantly enhance catalytic activity. The unique methodological advance of this platform lies in leveraging the inherent Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ redox couple for indirect HA quantification, thereby completely circumventing OER interference. The fabricated sensor demonstrates exceptional performance, including ultra-high sensitivity (3.51 mA mM −1 cm −2 ), a low detection limit (0.044 nM), and a wide linear range (1 nM to 5 × 10 6 nM). Furthermore, the platform was successfully applied to detect HA in complex matrices (fish samples), yielding results consistent with high-performance liquid chromatography. This work demonstrates the platform's potential as a robust analytical tool for convenient, rapid, and highly sensitive HA detection in real samples.

The introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) into metal oxide micro/nanostructures significantly enhances both catalytic performance and electrical conductivity, thereby boosting their gas-sensing capabilities. However, conventional approaches for engineering oxygen vacancies typically require specialized equipment (e.g., autoclave reactors) and extreme operational conditions (e.g., high temperature and high vacuum), posing substantial challenges for practical applications. Herein, a novel single-step laser-induced technique is developed for fabricating CuOx-based room-temperature acetone sensors under ambient conditions. The technique enables mask-free fabrication of tunable sensing films spanning morphologies from porous networks to nanospheres by precisely modulating the film thickness. Furthermore, oxygen-vacancy self-doping is inherently coupled with the micro/nanostructure growth mechanism, bypassing conventional postsynthesis treatments while preserving process simplicity. The as-prepared CuOx gas sensors with distinct morphologies manifest exceptional room-temperature acetone sensing with a wide response range spanning 0.1–10 ppm. Comparative analysis of nanosphere-based gas sensors conclusively demonstrates that oxygen vacancies constitute a key structural determinant, enabling room-temperature sensing capability in CuOx-based sensors. Moreover, both gas sensors exhibit outstanding selectivity toward acetone against common interferents (NO2, H2, CO2, and CO) and a low detection limit, highlighting their potential for trace acetone gas detection applications.

The development of high-performance, multifunctional catalysts capable of effectively addressing nitroarene hydrogenation remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a novel approach to catalyst design through the controlled carbonization of a copper–furan dicarboxylate metal–organic framework (Cu-FDCA MOF), resulting in two distinct nanocomposites: oxygen-vacancy-rich Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C (synthesized in an argon atmosphere) and conventional CuO (prepared by air calcination). Advanced characterizations, including TEM, XPS, EPR, and BET, reveal that Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C possesses 2.3 times more oxygen vacancies and a surface area 97 times greater (106.21 m 2 /g vs. 1.09 m 2 /g) than CuO, which directly correlates with its superior catalytic performance. In the context of nitroarene hydrogenation, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C demonstrates an exceptionally high rate constant (k app = 25.33 × 10 -2 s -1 ), outperforming CuO by a factor of 40. Furthermore, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C maintains 90 % of its catalytic activity after five reaction cycles and can be fully regenerated upon treatment at 400 °C. Through a combination of experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose a novel water-derived hydrogen transfer mechanism that challenges conventional understanding of the role of NaBH 4 . Notably, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C also exhibits impressive versatility, efficiently degrading organic dye (Congo red/methylene blue/methyl blue) within three minutes. This work establishes MOF-derived oxygen-deficient nanocomposites as promising platforms for both amine synthesis and environmental decontamination.

The effective amplification of the signal is the prerequisite for the ultrasensitive detection of electrochemical immunosensors. To quantitatively detect alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), we prepared a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor. Using a gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as the sensing platform and Cu/Cu2O-rGO@Au as the signal label, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to achieve sensitive detection of AFP. We found that the nanomaterials can undergo electro-oxidation and electro-reduction reactions between Cu(I) and Cu(II) in a buffer solution of pH = 6.0. It is worth mentioning that the incorporation of metals into metal oxide substrates is a new strategy to combine the catalytic activity of metal oxides with the electrical conductivity of metals. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which is rich in oxygen-containing groups, can load more Cu/Cu2O and Au NPs and increase the conductivity. The modification of Au NPs makes them have better biocompatibility and conductivity. Under the best detection conditions, the prepared immunosensor realizes the specific and ultrasensitive detection of AFP. The detection range is 0.01–50 ng mL−1 and the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.589 pg mL−1 (S/N = 3); meanwhile it also has good practical application ability. Therefore, this immunosensor provides an important means for the early screening and detection of AFP.

Ischemic stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide, and an effective and timely treatment of ischemic stroke has been a challenge because of the narrow therapeutic window and the poor affinity with thrombus of the thrombolytic agent. In this study, rPZDCu, a multifunctional nanoparticle (NP) with the effects of thrombolysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and neuroprotection, was synthesized based on an ultrasmall Cu4.6O NP, the thrombolytic agent rt-PA, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is a major component of the neuronal membrane. rPZDCu showed strong thrombus-targeting ability, which was achieved by the platelet cell membrane coating on the NP surface, and a good thrombolytic effect in both the common carotid artery clot model and embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of rats. Furthermore, rPZDCu exhibited a good escape from the phagocytosis of macrophages, effective promotion of the polarization of microglia, and efficient recovery of neurobiological and behavioral functions in the embolic MCAO model of rats. This is a heuristic report of (1) the Cu0/Cu+ NP for the treatments of brain diseases, (2) the integration of DHA and ROS scavengers for central nervous system therapies, and (3) diselenide-based ROS-responsive NPs for ischemic stroke treatments. This study also offers an example of cell membrane-camouflaged stimuli-responsive nanomedicine for brain-targeting drug delivery.
