Preparation and CO2 hydrogenation catalytic properties of alumina microsphere supported Cu-based catalyst by deposition-precipitation method

Chen Zhang,Haiyan Yang,Peng Gao,He Zhu,Liangshu Zhong,Hui Wang,Wei Wei,Yuhan Sun

A series of Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with the total weight percentage of Cu and ZnO from 9.94   wt.% to 44.5   wt.% have been prepared by ammonia deposition −precipitation method and tested for methanol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation. A Cu/Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) precursor can be formed in situ on the surface of microspherical Al 2 O 3 which acts as both support and sole source of Al 3+ cations. With increase of total Cu and ZnO loading, the dispersion of copper and reducibility of CuO decline continuously, while the exposed copper surface area increases gradually. In addition, the formation of LDHs results in a stronger both basicity and acid strength on the catalyst surface. It is found that the CO 2 conversion increases linearly with increase of the Cu and ZnO loading. The methanol selectivity for the catalyst with low total metal loading (9.94   wt.%) is much lower than those for other catalysts, though it increases with increasing loading, which can be mainly assigned to the much smaller Cu particle size (<5   nm) and the higher ratio of isolated CuO phase. Moreover, the Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 catalyst with relatively high total metal loading (44.50   wt.%) still exhibits a considerable stable catalytic performance due to the formation of LDH structure.

Cu–ZnO–ZnAl2O4 spinel nanosheet catalyst for stable and efficient hydrogen production from aqueous-phase reforming of methanol

Dan Liu,Shizhi Tan,Xujia Pan,Fei Mao,Haojie Qian,Zebo Wu,Huibin Yin,Shiyuan Gao,Yongjun Xu

Cu-based catalysts are prone to sintering and deactivation under the high-temperature conditions of methanol aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM). ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel has attracted much attention due to its flexible surface properties and tunable structural composition. Therefore, this study proposes a dual-modification strategy involving the incorporation of ZnO nanosheets and sesbania powder(SP)-derived carbon species on ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel support, thereby promoting the highly dispersed distribution of Cu nanoparticles and preparing a Cu/ZnO–ZnAl 2 O 4 –C catalyst (CZZAC). The H 2 production rate of the CZZAC catalyst is 66.22 μmolH 2 /g cat ./s under 210 °C. Based on the TPSR characterization analysis of the APRM reaction path, the results show that the CZZAC catalyst begins to produce hydrogen at 145 °C and follows the reaction path of the methyl formate intermediate product. This research has prepared a novel spinel nanosheet, demonstrating its effectiveness in preparing highly dispersed Cu catalysts, and providing a practical and economical alternative to noble metal catalysts.

Promoter‑engineered Cu/ZnO catalysts with enhanced metal‑support interaction for highly efficient photo-thermal methanol steam reforming

Xu Ying-Yu,Wang Shuang,Zhu Han-Dong,Wang Shuo,Feng Xiao-Qian,Wang Huan,Zhao Yong-Hua

Photo-thermal synergistic catalysis offers a promising route for low-temperature and efficient hydrogen production, in which the design of catalysts is crucial. In this study, a series of promoter-modified Cu supported on ZnO (M-Cu/ZnO, M = Al, Zr, Co, Ce) were designed and prepared via a controllable hydrothermal synthesis strategy, and their catalytic performance in photo-thermal methanol steam reforming (MSR) for hydrogen production was systematically investigated. By varying the type of promoter, precise modulation of the catalyst's textural properties, metal-support interactions, and distribution of active sites was achieved. Characterization results revealed that the introduction of Al promoters significantly enhanced the dispersion of Cu species on the ZnO surface and strengthened metal-support interactions, thereby effectively suppressing the sintering and deactivation of active components during the reaction. Under photo-thermal MSR conditions of 240 °C, 0.1 MPa, and a space velocity of 17 300 mL·g −1 ·h −1 , the Al-Cu/ZnO catalyst exhibited the optimal catalytic performance, achieving a methanol conversion of 97.08% and an H 2 yield of 99.14 mL·g −1 ·min −1 , with only an 11% decrease in conversion after 10 h of continuous operation, demonstrating excellent stability. This work elucidates the structure–activity relationships in multicomponent Cu/ZnO catalysts for photo-thermal MSR from the perspective of promoter engineering, providing both experimental evidence and design insights for the development of efficient and stable solar-driven hydrogen production catalyst systems.

Bimetallic CuZn-MOFs derived Cu-ZnO/C catalyst for reductive amination of nitroarenes with aromatic aldehydes tandem reaction

Wei She,Jing Wang,Xuewei Li,Jingfang Li,Guijie Mao,Weizuo Li,Guangming Li

Tuning of the metal–metal/oxide interaction is a vital route to enhance the performance of the supported catalysts. In this study, a Cu/Zn bimetallic MOFs was synthesized through a simple solvothermal method by using an adenine rigid biomolecule acted as organic linker. Furthermore, a ZnO/nitrogen-doped carbon composite supported Cu catalyst (named as Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs) derived from the bimetallic CuZn-MOFs was obtained via one-pot pyrolysis method. The developed Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst was tested for hydrogenation-amination tandem reaction. The bimetallic CuZn-MOFs with the uniformly dispersed Cu and Zn centers acted as a self-sacrificing template, which could facilitate the derived catalyst with strengthened Cu-ZnO interaction, high dispersity, and more N species. All of these advantages give the developed Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst with higher performance in hydrogenation-amination tandem reaction compared with traditional Cu/ZnO/NC-IWI (synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation) catalyst. The Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs exhibits good stability for the recycling experiments with a negligible loss in its performance. More importantly, the Cu-ZnO/NC-BMOFs catalyst could convert nitroarenes into the corresponding imines or secondary amines with excellent selectivity (>90.0%). This bimetallic MOFs-derived strategy may provide a way for fabricating NC supported catalysts in other tandem reactions.

Promotional Effects of Cesium Promoter on Higher Alcohol Synthesis from Syngas over Cesium-Promoted Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 Catalysts

Jie Sun,Qiuxia Cai,Yan Wan,Shaolong Wan,Li Wang,Jingdong Lin,Donghai Mei,Yong Wang

The promotional effects of a cesium promoter on higher alcohol (C2+OH) synthesis from syngas over Cs2O-Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts were investigated using a combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation method. In the presence of a cesium promoter, the C2+OH productivity increases from 77.1 to 157.3 g kgcat–1 h–1 at 583 K due to the enhancement of the initial C–C bond formation. A detailed analysis of chain growth probabilities (CGPs) confirms that initial C–C bond formation is the rate-determining step in the temperature range of 543–583 K. Addition of a cesium promoter significantly increases the productivities of 2-methyl-1-propanol, while the CGP values (C3* to 2-methyl-C3*) are almost unaffected. With the assistance of a cesium promoter, the CGPs of the initial C–C bond formation step (C1* to C2*) increase from 0.13 to 0.25 at 583 K. DFT calculations indicate that the initial C–C bond formation during syngas synthesis over the ZnCu(211) model surface is mainly due to the HCO + HCO coupling. In the presence of Cs2O, the stabilities of key intermediates such as HCO and H2CO are enhanced, which facilitates both HCO + HCO and HCO + H2CO coupling steps with lower activation barriers. In addition, Bader charge analysis suggests that the presence of cesium ions could facilitate nucleophilic coupling between HCO and H2CO for the initial C–C bond formation.

Zr-modified Cu-ZnO-Al2O3 catalyst integrated with bio- templated HZSM-5 for Methanol/DME production from CO2 hydrogenation

Abrar Hussain,Ndumiso Vukile Mdlovu,Kuen-Song Lin,Chi-Jung Chang,Amin Hussain

Background The conversion of CO 2 into value-added fuels and chemicals remains one of the major challenges in catalysis and sustainable energy research. Developing efficient catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation to methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting carbon recycling. Methods In this work, a Zr-modified CuO–ZnO–Al₂O₃ (CZZA) catalyst was synthesized via a co-precipitation method for CO 2 hydrogenation. The catalyst systems “CZZA/HZSM-5-L” and “CZZA/com-HZSM-5” represent Zr-modified CZZA physically integrated with loofah-templated and commercial HZSM-5 (Si/Al = 25), respectively. A bio-HZSM-5 catalyst was also prepared using loofah sponge and rice husks as dual biotemplates to promote methanol dehydration into DME. The novelty lies in (i) the dual-biomass templating strategy (silica-rich rice husk vs. low-silica loofah) to achieve macro– meso –micro hierarchies while retaining MFI crystallinity, and (ii) Zr-promotion of the Cu–ZnO–Al₂O₃ matrix to enhance Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ and Cu–Zn interfacial sites, enabling efficient one-pass CO₂ → MeOH → DME conversion at 280 °C and 30 bar. Significant findings Zr incorporation significantly improved the structural and electronic properties of the CZZA catalyst, leading to enhanced surface area, active site dispersion, and CuO–ZnO interfacial synergy. Among all tested catalysts, the CZZA/HZSM-5-L bifunctional catalyst achieved the highest DME yield (13.2 %), DME selectivity (58.6 %), and CO₂ conversion (22.5 %) at 280 °C and 30 bar. An economic evaluation of 5- and 10-ton-per-day (TPD) DME production using refinery waste CO₂ showed payback periods of 2.98 and 2.44 years, respectively. Sensitivity analysis (±20 % variation in H 2 and DME prices) confirmed the payback remained below 4 years, demonstrating the technical and economic viability of the developed Power-to-DME process.

Rational design of all-solid-state TiO2-x/Cu/ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction via ALD-assistance for enhanced photocatalytic activity

Ben Chen,Jin Zhang,Jing Yu,Rui wang,Beibei He,Jun Jin,Huanwen Wang,Yansheng Gong

Poor visible light utilization and charge separation efficiency of TiO 2 restrict its extensive application in the photocatalytic field. Herein, a specific Z-scheme TiO 2-x /Cu/ZnO heterojunction was successfully constructed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique and spray pyrolysis technology. Benefited from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Cu and Z-scheme heterojunction, the visible light absorption capacity was greatly enhanced. Meanwhile, ZnO nanolayer coating, prepared by ALD technique, protects Cu element to hinder its oxidation, thus enhancing the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Therefore, the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance was significant improved, exhibiting a maximum value of 342.0 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 for the optimal B-T-0.1C-10Z (black TiO 2 /0.1Cu/10 nm ZnO) sample without any noble-metal cocatalyst, which is higher than pure TiO 2 (310.7 µmol·g −1 ·h −1 , with 3 wt% Pt) synthesized by spray pyrolysis method under equal conditions. In addition, a possible mechanism for the enhanced performance was briefly discussed based on the experimental results.

Influence of Cu/Al Ratio on the Performance of Carbon-Supported Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Zhong Xie,Jinpei Hei,Lei Cheng,Jing Li,Xiaojie Yin,Sugang Meng

CO2hydrogenation to methanol was conducted using a set of activated carbon-supported Cu/ZnO/Al2O3catalysts (CCZA) prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation approach. The effect of the Cu/Al ratio on the physicochemical properties of the catalysts, as well as their catalytic performance, were investigated. As Cu/Al ratio increased, the metallic Cu surface area displayed a reducing trend from 6.88 to 4.18 m2∙gcat−1, while the CO2adsorption capacity exhibited an increasing trend. Meanwhile, aluminum content will have an important effect on the catalysts’ reducibility and, thus, on their catalytic performance. The CCZA-2.7-de catalyst demonstrated the highest selectivity to methanol at 83.75% due to the excellent distribution and synergistic effect of copper and zinc. Although the CO2conversion of CCZA-2.2-de and CCZA-3.5-de exceeded 10%, the CH3OH selectivity was less than 60%, which may be attributed to the larger particle sizes of ZnO and poor interactions in Cu–Zn. The present study offers a novel approach to increase the number of active sites, optimize the activated carbon-aided Cu/ZnO/Al2O3catalyst’s composition, and finally elucidate the mechanism for CO2hydrogenation to methanol.Keywords:CO2hydrogenation;CuO/ZnO/Al2O3catalyst;methanol synthesis;carbon-supported catalyst;thermocatalysis

Microemulsion solventing-out co-precipitation strategy for fabricating highly active Cu–ZnO/Al2O3 dual site catalysts for reverse water gas shift

Ziheng Zhen,Wenxiang Tang,Wei (Willy) Chu,Tao Zhang,Li Lv,Shengwei Tang

The dispersity and the neighboring degree of different sites play crucial roles in the catalytic performance of dual site catalysts. The solution of precursors was encapsulated into microdroplets by forming a microemulsion. The average diameter of microdroplets was about 45 nm. This guaranteed that the dosage of precursors was at the attogram level and only about a thousand precursor molecules were encapsulated in each microdroplet. An anti-solvent extraction method was applied to extract water from the microdroplets with acetonitrile. The precursors co-precipitated in the microdroplets due to the loss of water. The encapsulated precursors in the microdroplets co-precipitated together in nanoscale space, so the neighboring degree of the two precursors was improved significantly. The prepared catalyst was characterized by ICP-OES, BET, XRD, H2-TPR, TEM and XPS. Compared with the Cu–ZnO/Al2O3 (CZA) catalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method, the CZA catalysts prepared by the proposed strategy had much stronger interaction and a better neighboring degree of the dual active sites. They also showed very good catalytic performance for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. The CO2 conversion of the designed CZA catalysts was about 1–2 times higher than that of the CZA catalysts prepared by the conventional impregnation method at 0.1 MPa, 300–400 °C and a CO2/H2 mole ratio of 1.

Constructing carbon supported copper-based catalysts for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Zhong Xie,Jinpei Hei,Chuan Li,Xiaojie Yin,Fengyi Wu,Lei Cheng,Sugang Meng

An activated carbon-supported Cu/ZnO catalyst (CCZ-AE-ox) was successfully obtained by the ammonia evaporation method for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol, and the surface properties of the catalyst post-calcination and reduction were investigated. Activated carbon facilitated the increased dispersion of the loaded metals, which promote the CO2 space-time yield (STY) of methanol and turnover frequency (TOF) on the active sites. Furthermore, the factors affecting the catalyst in the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol were in-depth investigated. The larger surface area and higher CO2 adsorption capacity are found to make possible the main attributions of the superior activity of the CCZ-AE-ox catalyst.

Enhance CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Cu/ZnO foam monolithic catalysts: the role of excitation of active copper and metal-oxide interface effects

Caiyun Han,Yunfei Gao,Juan Lei,Shuang Wang

The development of efficient monolithic catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol holds great significance in addressing the industrial application of Cu-based catalysts. In this study, a series of monolithic catalysts by coupling MOFs-derived oxides with Cu(OH) 2 transition layers loaded on copper foam (CF) are successfully prepared, in which the content of active Cu can be facilely controlled by tuning Cu(OH) 2 load. And various characterization results prove that the metal-oxide interface effect is successfully applied in monolithic catalysts. This strategy offers the unique advantage of constructing the rich metal-oxide interface over monolithic catalysts; thus, significantly enhances the methanol synthesis activity. Furthermore, utilizing this phenomenon, many yZC x CF (x = 1.25, 2.5) catalysts are synthesized by adjusting the amounts of MOFs-derived oxides, revealing an ideal Cu/Zn ratio may optimize the metal-oxide interface (Cu-ZnO interface) on the catalysts. Notably, the 4ZC 2.5 CF catalyst demonstrates the highest methanol space–time yield (STY) of 183 g·kg cat -1 ·h −1 and 150 h of stability. The “Cu(OH) 2 transition layer control interface” strategy proposed in this study provides the feasibility and key parameters in the large-scale preparation of monolithic catalysts.
