Improvement of catalyst dispersion is an effective strategy for performance enhancement of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while the heterogeneous structure can also regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst interface. In this paper, Cu 2 S nanorods were synthesized in situ on copper foam (CF) by alkaline etching and sulfidation, Subsequently, FeCoNi LDH nanosheets were electrodeposited on Cu 2 S nanorods to construct FeCoNi LDH/Cu 2 S heterojunctions. The electrochemical results demonstrate that FeCoNi LDH/Cu 2 S/CF exhibits high efficiency as an alkaline OER electrocatalyst with an overpotential of 211 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, FeCoNi LDH/Cu 2 S/CF can operate for 30 h and shows good cycling stability. The XPS results indicate that the electrons are transferred from FeCoNi LDH to Cu 2 S. The formation of the FeCoNi LDH/Cu 2 S heterojunction optimizes the interface at the heterojunction, thereby accelerating the electron transfer and optimizing the electronic structure at the interface. The uniform dispersion of FeCoNi LDH provides a high density of active sites and improves the mass transfer ability, thus enhancing the catalytic performance. This experimental strategy presents a generalized approach to improve the efficient electrochemical reaction of layered double hydroxides.

Supercapacitor is one of well-known energy-storage devices. However, the electrode materials still restrict its performance and reduce its practical value due to low capacitance or high cost. Therefore, it is of vital importance to pursue the cheap electrode materials with high performance for the next generation supercapacitor. Herein, a series of bimetal sulfide MnS/Cu 2 S/C composite materials were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and the subsequent calcination with expired manganese gluconate and copper gluconate as the starting materials. Moreover, the effect of Cu 2 S's content on the microstructure and capacitance of MnS/Cu 2 S/C bimetal sulfides was further investigated. All the composites showed the well-organized morphology of about 3 nm metal sulfide nanoparticles embedded in the carbon microspheres with a diameter of about 6 μm. When the feeding ratio was 2:1, the reversible specific capacitances of 2MnS/Cu 2 S/C (MCS-2) in the three-electrode and two-electrode systems were as high as 1206 F/g and 116 F/g at 1.0 A/g, respectively, higher than those of other samples. The synergistic effect of the bimetal sulfides and the joint contributions of high conductivity and low capacitance of Cu 2 S may be responsible for the desirable high supercapacitance. Additionally, the successful conversion of expired gluconates to the useful electrode materials in this work highlighted the ecological benefits and the positive effect on the environmental protection and the resource conservation.

Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S nanotubes (NT) with rough-surfaces and hollow heterostructure structures have been synthesized by sulfurizing the as-prepared Cu/Cu 2 O nanowires (NWs). The Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S NT electrode exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with low onset overpotential of 48 mV and a Tafel slope of 107 mV dec −1 in acidic solution. Furthermore, the overpotentials are only ~86 and ~214 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . The impressive catalytic performance of Cu/Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S NT toward HER can be attributed to the unique rough-surfaces, hollow structure, and the synergistic effect between multiple atoms and ions.

An electrochemical molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sensor is developed for sensitive detection of bisphenol A (BPA) based on leaf-like Cu 2 S/activated functionalized carbon nanotubes (AFCNTs) nanocomposite as the conductive substrate. The Cu 2 S/AFCNTs composite shows a BET specific surface area of 24.7 m 2 g − 1 , which is approximately eight times higher than that of the pure Cu 2 S (3.3 m 2 g − 1 ). This enlarged surface area contributes to abundant accessible active sites and promotes efficient electron transfer. The electroactive area of the Cu 2 S/AFCNTs-modified electrode is 0.40 cm 2 which is fivefold higher than the bare electrode (0.08 cm 2 ). The MIP film is electropolymerized onto the composite surface with a thickness of 2.91 nm. Mechanistic studies confirm that BPA oxidation is an adsorption-controlled irreversible process involving 2H + /2e − . Under optimized conditions, the sensor displays a broad linear range from 0.9 to 20 µM and a limit of detection of 0.19 µM with high selectivity against common interferents. The sensor also demonstrates good reproducibility (RSD 4.2%) and stability. Practical applicability is validated by determination of BPA in milk samples, with recoveries ranging from 99% to 102.1% (RSD 2.1 ~ 3.7%). This work highlights the synergistic enhancement of Cu 2 S and AFCNTs for constructing high-performance MIP-based electrochemical sensors for food safety monitoring.

Aiming at the poor intrinsic conductivity and huge volume expansion of transition metal sulfides, carbon-coated cuprous sulfide hollow nanoboxes (Cu 2 S@C) with core–shell structure were designed via co-precipitation, facial carbon coating and in-situ sulfurization methods, and exhibited significantly improved electrochemical properties applied as sodium ion battery anode. The uniformly coated carbon shell can enhance the electrolyte infiltration, promote charge transfer efficiency, accelerate electrochemical conversion redox kinetics. The conversion reaction reversibility of restricted Cu 2 S cores show a significant improvement benefitting from accelebrating ion diffusion and spatial limitation. During the sulfidation, robust chemically and electronically bonded connections such as C-S moieties formed between the two phases, creating interconnected channels that facilliate rapid charge transfer kinetics and optimize structural durability. Moreover, the hollow core–shell structure can provide a buffer space for tolerating volume expansion and preventing agglomeration arising from the repeating Na + insertion/desertion process, which can availably enhance cyclic stability. Thanks to the synergistic effect between strong interfacial coupling and hollow core–shell structure, the Cu 2 S@C composite can deliver an improved Na + storage performance. At the high current density of 1.0 A/g, the Cu 2 S@C anode could exhibit a specific capacity of 100.08 mAh/g, which is significant ameliorative than Cu 2 S counterpart (only 11.6 mAh/g).

In clinical tumor therapy, traditional treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy all have their own limitations. With the development of nanotechnology, new therapeutic methods based on nanomaterials such as photothermal therapy (PTT) have also emerged. PTT takes advantage of the poor thermal tolerance of tumor cells and uses the heat generated by photothermal reagents to kill tumor cells. A transition metal sulfide represented as Cu2S is an ideal photothermal reagent because of its easy preparation, high extinction coefficient and photothermal conversion efficiency. Surface modification of nanoparticles (NPs) is also necessary, which not only can reduce toxicity and improve colloidal stability, but also can provide the possibility of further chemotherapeutic drug loading. In this work, we report the fabrication of Tween-20 (Tw20)-modified and doxorubicin (Dox)-loaded Cu2S NPs (Cu2S/Dox@Tw20 NPs), which significantly improves the performance in tumor therapy. Apart from the enhancement of colloidal stability and biocompatibility, the drug loading rate of Dox in Tw20 reaches 11.3%. Because of the loading of Dox, Cu2S/Dox@Tw20 NPs exhibit chemotherapeutic behaviors and the tumor inhibition rate is 76.2%. Further combined with a near-infrared laser, the high temperature directly leads to the apoptosis of a large number of tumor cells, while the release of chemotherapeutic drugs under heat can not only continue to kill residual tumor cells, but also inhibit tumor recurrence. Therefore, with the combination of PTT and chemotherapy, the tumor was completely eliminated. Both hematological analysis and histopathological analysis proved that our experiments are safe.

Cu 2 S compounds are promising thermoelectric (TE) candidate materials with environmentally friendly and earth abundant chemical constituents. A series of phase transitions occur with temperature whereas only the high temperature stabilized cubic structure (α-Cu 2 S) exhibits desirable TE properties. In this work, by alloying Cu sites with Mn, Zn, Ga, and Ge, profound influence on β- to α-Cu 2 S phase transition and thermoelectric transport properties is observed. Both phase transition temperature ( T c ) and the enthalpy of phase change (Δ H ) decreases with doping; remarkably, for Cu 1.95 Mn 0.03 S, T c reduces by ≈156 K. The Seebeck anomaly near the critical point of phase transition also vanishes. The electrical conductivity is remarkably improved for doped samples due to the largely elevated hole concentration. In comparison with pristine Cu 2 S, not only is the peak TE power factor substantially enhanced (by ≈272%), but also the average ZT for 500–823 K is highly improved (by ≈145%) due to the successful stabilization of α-Cu 2 S at lower temperatures. The present work offers a clue to enlarge the temperature regime of high TE properties, which is practically useful for a variety of polymorphous thermoelectric compounds.

Two-dimensional (2D) vertical heterojunctions possess peculiar electronic and optoelectronic properties according to their complementary composition, ultrathin thickness, and unique geometry. However, it is still a challenge to synthesize 2D vertical heterojunctions based on non-layered materials due to strong covalent bonds and abundant surface dangling bonds. Here we developed a partial cation exchange method for the synthesis of 2D vertical Cu2S/CdS heterojunctions. Large-size and single-crystalline CdS nanosheets prepared by a van der Waals epitaxy method served as host lattices for cation exchange reactions. The evolution of the nanosheets in terms of their morphology, composition and crystal structure was elaborately characterized. The as-prepared 2D vertical heterojunctions have two-layer ultra-thin structures and form large-area junctions at their interfaces. Under light irradiation, the photogenerated electron–hole pairs can be quickly separated under the electric field in the junction region, minimizing the possibility of charge recombination. As a result, the device based on 2D vertical Cu2S/CdS heterojunctions exhibits a higher photoelectric conversion capability compared with the device based on single-component 2D CdS or Cu2S Schottky junctions. Our work opens up opportunities to explore 2D vertical heterojunctions based on non-layered materials for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are of central importance for electrocatalytic water oxidation and fuel generation, while it is still an urgent requirement to design and develop efficient OER catalysts with rapid kinetics and low overpotentials. Herein, we report an electrochemical deposition method to fabricate carbon nanotubes/N-doped cuprous sulfide (CNTs/N-Cu 2 S) composites using thiourea and a CuSO 4 solution as the S and Cu sources, respectively. The advantages of this strategy include low cost, simple processing and the absence of templates or surfactants that can otherwise affect the electrochemical properties of the products. The N supplied by the thiourea can be used as a doping agent as a result of the in situ formation of small N-Cu 2 S particles, which can increase larger surface area and create more active sites to enhance OER catalytic activity, compared with that obtained with materials synthesized without adding the thiourea. The synergic interface of CNTs and N-Cu 2 S can improve conductivity and efficient chemical transfer in the composites electrodes by introducing CNTs. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the CNTs/N-Cu 2 S-5cyc composites present an excellent activity with the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low OER overpotential of 280 mV, the Tafel slope of 63 mV dec −1 and a strong electrochemical stability in 1.0 M KOH solution.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN), as an inherently safe, low-cost, and long-cycle-life material, holds a promising future in large-scale energy storage applications. However, there are still issues such as sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics and low energy utilization efficiency, which severely constrain practical applications. Herein, we introduce the displacement reaction of Cu 2 S-Li 2 S to the conversion reaction of SPAN/Li 2 S by incorporating Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and Copper (Cu) to fabricate Cu-SPAN/CNT cathode. Detailed experimental investigations demonstrate the fast and reversible Cu 2 S-Li 2 S displacement reaction, enhancing the SPAN/Li 2 S redox kinetics. Consequently, Cu-SPAN/CNT achieves 1450 mAh g −1 at 1 C with 80.3 % retention after 1000 cycles, while delivering 1207 mAh g −1 at 4 C and maintaining operation under practical conditions (6.75 mg cm −2 sulfur loading, −20 °C). Crucially, it attains 79.8 % energy utilization efficiency at the 100th cycle. In conclusion, this work optimizes the cycling process of SPAN-based batteries, particularly the highly polarized charging processes, providing a simple solution for developing energy storage applications with extended cycle life, accelerated reaction kinetics, and enhanced energy utilization efficiency.

A hierarchical CoS shelled Cu 2 S nanorods material grown directly on copper foam (denoted as Cu 2 S NRs@CoS/CF) was prepared for the first time and used as the bifunctional electrocatalyst for both OER and HER in 1 M KOH solution. Resulting from the substrate-integrated synthesis, the highly open spaces and the synergistic effects between Cu 2 S and CoS active components, the as-obtained core-shell heterostructure and its derivative behaves as a remarkable active bifunctional electrocatalyst towards both water oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction in 1 M KOH solution (pH 13.7), which only need low overpotentials of 275 and 235 mV to deliver the current density of 50 mA cm −2 with Tafel slopes of 54 and 121 mV dec −1 for OER and HER, respectively, rivalling the catalytic efficiency of most published non-noble metal catalysts . Furthermore, the fabrication strategy presented here is facile and economical which might offer some insights for fabricating other novel water splitting catalysts with high activity.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries with similar working principles, cell structures, and material systems. However, attaining long-term stability and high-capacity performance of SIBs at ultrahigh rates remains a significant challenge due to the large ionic radius and slow kinetic behavior of Na + . Herein, a novel robust anode with a dual-biomimetic gradient hierarchical architecture is proposed and provide a simple strategy to fabricate this sulfur-doped mesoporous carbon concave hollow sphere/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (SCMX) anode. In addition, Cu 2 S nanoparticles are in situ embedded into the SCMX architecture by electrochemical induction during the cycling process to act as active sites, which enhances the rate performance and cycling stability. Relying on its hybrid architecture and in situ formed Cu 2 S, this SCMX anode can achieve high ion accessibility, rich active sites, rapid charge transfer, and favorable structure stability, as disclosed by in/ex situ characterizations. As a result, it exhibits high reversible capacity (745.6 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 ), ultrahigh-rate capability (380.5 mAh g −1 at 50.0 A g −1 ), and long cycling stability (98.2% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles at 80.0 A g −1 ). This work is anticipated to accelerate the development of high-performance SIBs and offer distinctive inspiration for the design of electrode structures/systems.
