Transport of microplastics treated with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in saturated porous media

Yantian Ji,Duo Xu,Lan Wu,Bowen Du,Hongyang Chen,Tiecheng Wang,Xianqiang Yin

The performance of discharge plasma in treating organic pollutants and micro-organisms in water is impressive. When discharge plasma is used to treat polluted water containing organic pollutants and microorganisms, the presence of a certain amount of microplastics (MPs) in the water is unavoidable due to the complexity of the components contained in the water and the prevalence of MPs. MPs, as one of the pollutants that are difficult to be degraded by discharge plasma, undergo physical and chemical changes that increase their risk in the environment after treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the fate of MPs after being treated with discharge plasma. In this study, the surface morphology of plastics before and after discharge plasma treatment was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The plastics after discharge plasma treatment were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the changes in oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. The recovery of microplastics (MPs) in saturated porous media under different physicochemical and plasma oxidation conditions was investigated by column experiments. It has been shown that MPs exhibit increased recovery under conditions of increased flow rate and pH. A decrease in recovery was observed at elevated ionic strength and co-existing cation valence. High voltages and low air flow rates increase the oxidation of MPs by increasing the thermal effects of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system, the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the intensity of ultraviolet ray (UV) irradiation. The mobility of MPs is enhanced by a combination of these factors. The advection–dispersion equation (ADE) fits the transport data of MPs well. The interaction energy between quartz sand and MPs was calculated using the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. This study provides a new perspective on the potential risks of discharge plasma in water treatment.

DBD plasma enables phase-dependent pollutant degradation and ecological detoxification in water-sediment systems

Shuang Yang,Tianyu Lu,Yongchun Wang,He Guo

DBD enables simultaneous removal of SMX and BPA in water-sediment systems. • ·OH, 1 O 2 and ·O 2 − dominate plasma oxidation. • Phase distribution controls degradation efficiency. • Plasma transforms sediment structure and enhances pollutant desorption. • LCA/TEA show electricity use and cost limit scale-up feasibility. Emerging contaminants are frequently detected in environmental waters and sediments. However, limited attention has been given to their removal in coupled water-sediment systems. In this study, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was employed as a chemical-free advanced oxidation technology to achieve in-situ generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for simultaneous remediation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (water phase dominant) and bisphenol A (BPA) (sediment-associated) in a water-sediment system. The results show that degradation efficiency is strongly dependent on applied voltage, O 2 flow rate, and sediment-to-water ratio, while initial pollutant concentration is a limiting factor due to ROS availability. ESR and quenching experiments confirmed that ·OH, 1 O 2 , and ·O 2 − are the dominant reactive species, with 1 O 2 and ·OH playing primary roles. LC-MS and DFT analyses revealed multiple oxidative pathways involving hydroxylation, bond cleavage, and ring-opening reactions. Predictive ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. analyses suggested lower toxicity for most identified transformation products, and selected algal and seed-germination bioassays showed reduced toxicity-related effects after treatment. Plasma treatment also altered sediment structure and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which may facilitate pollutant desorption and interfacial mass transfer. Gate-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) identified electricity consumption and capital cost as the main burdens within the assessed boundary. This work demonstrates that DBD plasma enables simultaneous degradation of water- and sediment-associated contaminants through coupled ROS-driven oxidation and sediment matrix restructuring, providing a sustainable strategy for complex environmental remediation. Non-thermal atmospheric plasma synthesis of ammonia in a DBD reactor packed with various catalysts

Qinglong Xie,Shaoyuan Zhuge,Xiaofang Song,Meizhen Lu,Fengwen Yu,Roger Ruan,Yong Nie

Plasma synthesis of ammonia (NH3) is a potential and sustainable pathway for nitrogen fixation. In this study, non-thermal plasma (NTP) synthesis of NH3 was conducted in a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Different catalysts, including alumina (Al2O3), light magnesium oxide (L-MgO), heavy magnesium oxide (H-MgO), Ru/Al2O3 and Ru/L-MgO, were filled in the reactor and compared for NH3 production. Various characterization techniques were used to determine the specific surface area and pore size, surface morphology, and surface acidity of the catalysts. The effects of reaction conditions on NH3 production were examined. Results showed that the optimal N2/H2 volume ratio was 2:1 since a greater quantity of N2 favored the generation of plasma-excited nitrogen species. The synthesized NH3 can be adsorbed by the acid sites on Al2O3, which reduced the NH3 yield. Higher total gas flow rate improved the NH3 production over various catalysts, mainly due to the reduced external diffusion resistance. More plasma-excited nitrogen and hydrogen species for NH3 synthesis were formed at higher discharge power, yet the increasing rate of NH3 yield became slower when the discharge power was higher than 32 W. Additionally, the NH3 desorption from the catalyst was enhanced at higher temperature, which resulted in higher NH3 yield.

Simultaneous enhancement of hydrophobicity and anti-icing properties of aluminum surface through DBD plasma treatment

Haotian Li,Jiawei Kai,Xi Zhu,Jianghong Zhang,Hongtu Cheng,Xinglei Cui,Zhi Fang

Superhydrophobic surface achieved within four minutes of surface modification. • DBD plasma treatment extended the icing time of droplets on aluminum by 7 times. • DFT calculations reveal adsorption grafting of precursor-derived fragments on Al. • Work function reduction correlates with improved hydrophobic/anti-icing properties. Improving the hydrophobicity and anti-icing performance of metal surfaces helps ensure the long-term operational safety of outdoor devices in power systems. This study performed modification on aluminum substrates using Ar/Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. Wettability tests and icing experiments were conducted on the modified substrates, informing that a superhydrophobic/anti-icing coating has been efficiently deposited within four minutes. Specifically, the water contact angle reached 150° while the icing time increased by approximately sevenfold. The mechanism for the functionalized film deposition was explored by investigating discharge characteristics and surface characterizations. The results indicate that treatment time plays a vital role in the morphology and chemical composition of the functional SiO x C y H z film. Furthermore, to reveal the plasma deposition mechanism, first-principles calculations were performed to obtain adsorption configurations and energies of Si-containing species on the Al surface. Among them, the oxygen-containing particles such as (CH 3 ) 3 SiO bind most robustly to the substrate and their grafting significantly reduces the surface energy and work function. Based on theoretical analysis, it has been clarified how Ar/HMDSO plasma deposition enhances the hydrophobicity and anti-icing properties of aluminum. This research is expected to promote the application of low-temperature plasma in the surface modification of metal devices. Activated persulfate by DBD plasma and activated carbon for the degradation of acid orange II

Weigang CHEN,Haixia WU,Jiawei FAN,Zhi FANG,Shaohua LIN

In this study, the effect of activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and activated carbon (HGAC) on the removal of acid orange II (AOII) was investigated. The effects of applied voltage, PDS dosage, HGAC dosage, initial pH value, and inorganic anions on the removal rate of AOII were discussed. The main free radicals degrading azo dyes during the experiment were also studied. Experimental results show that the removal rate of AOII in DBD/HGAC/PDS synergistic system is much higher than that in the single system. With the applied voltage of 16 kV, HGAC dosage of 1 g l−1, PDS and AOII molar ratio of 200:1, initial pH value of 5.4 and concentration of AOII solution of 20 mg l−1, the removal rate of AOII reached 97.6% in DBD/HGAC/PDS process after 28 min of reaction. Acidic and neutral conditions are beneficial for AOII removal. Sulfate and hydroxyl radicals play an important role in the removal of AOII. Inorganic anions are not conducive to the removal of AOII.

Synergistic CO2 hydrogenation with DBD plasma over a Ni-based catalyst prepared at low temperature

Qian Zhang,Yi Chen,Miaomiao Xiao,Xin Zhang,Langlang Wang,Xiang Li,Xin Sun,Kai Li,Ping Ning,Yixing Ma,Xueqian Wang

The integration of non-thermal plasma (NTP) with supported metal catalysts presents a promising strategy for the conversion of carbon dioxide under mild conditions. This study prepared catalysts at relatively low temperatures and employed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to drive CO 2 hydrogenation under low-temperature reaction conditions. The optimization effect of CeO 2 loading on the performance of Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts was systematically investigated. The results indicate that the 15Ni-15Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits the most optimal performance. At a specific energy input (SEI) of 21.65 kJ/L, the CO 2 conversion rate reaches 88.6%, representing a more than fourfold improvement over the 15Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst. The selectivities for CH 4 , C 2 H 6 , and C 3 H 8 are 90.4%, 6.8%, and 2.0%, respectively. Characterization revealed that optimized low-temperature preparation conditions successfully generated highly dispersed metallic Ni 0 active sites. The introduction of CeO 2 further reduced Ni 0 particle size and created abundant oxygen vacancies. The 15Ni-15Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst enhances CO 2 adsorption and activation through oxygen vacancy-enhanced mechanisms, while NTP generates active H atoms from H 2 . Both processes synergistically drive efficient reaction progress. In situ DRIFTS analysis of surface species on 15Ni/ZSM-5 and 15Ni-15Ce/ZSM-5 catalysts under NTP conditions revealed the mechanism of NTP-catalyzed CO 2 methanation. Results indicate that hydrogenation on 15Ni/ZSM-5 primarily follows the CO pathway. After the introduction of CeO 2 , the reaction pathway changes, with the 15Ni-15Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst achieving highly selective hydrogenation mainly through the b-HCOO pathway.

Lin-Song Li,Xue-Jie Zhao,Peng-Wei Chen,Dong Cheng,Bang-Bang Liu,Mei-Xia Zhao

The success of clinical therapies against liver cancer is largely determined the accuracy rate of treatment. Herein, we designed a dual-responsive smart nano-platform (HMCuS@DOX@9R–P201) could realize multimodal synergistic therapy. The nano-platform could precisely recognize the protein marker FOXM1c-DBD on the surface of HepG2 cells. The apoptosis rate of HepG2 cells reached 98.51 % under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, and the tumor inhibition rate of HMCD9P NPs + L treatment group was as high as 88.2 % in mice. Moreover, it could up-regulate the apoptosis-related protein Bak, down-regulate PARP-1, Bcl-2, and Caspase 8, and inhibit the pathway protein FOXM1, thus down-regulating Skp2, up-regulate p27Kip1, and precise induction of multimodal synergistic therapy based on chemotherapy, photothermal therapy (PTT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) to improve anti -HCC efficacy and reduce side effects. Overall, we report a liver cancer-targeted smart nano-platform with promising anti-liver cancer effects and multiple synergistic therapeutic mechanisms.

Sustainable approach for landfill leachate treatment through dielectric barrier discharge/ferrate (DBD/Fe(VI)) enhanced nanofiltration

Bin Liu,Danjing Lu,Tianliang Zhang,Yixun Shen,Zhen Qiu,Xin Mao,Ruoxi Wu

Landfill leachate, with its high concentrations of persistent organic pollutants, salts, heavy metals, and emerging contaminants, presents significant environmental challenges. This study investigated the combination of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and ferrate (Fe(VI)) pretreatment technology in landfill leachate treatment, focusing on its effectiveness in enhancing oxidation performance and mitigating membrane fouling. The results indicated that after DBD/Fe(VI) treatment, TOC and UV 254 removal efficiencies increased by 44 % and 67 %, respectively. Additionally, the DBD/Fe(VI) system excelled in removing fluorescent substances and high molecular weight organic compounds, thereby reducing the formation of the cake layer on the nanofiltration membrane. This system enhanced oxidation performance through the synergistic production of reactive intermediates, with Fe(V)/Fe(IV) and •OH being the main active species, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 also contributing significantly. The degradation pathway of perfluorooctanoic acid was investigated by utilizing it as the representative pollutant. Compared to the raw landfill leachate system, the DBD/Fe(VI) increased membrane flux by 104 %, while reducing reversible and irreversible fouling resistances by 67 % and 75 %, respectively. Furthermore, the advantages and practical application potential of the DBD/Fe(VI) system were evaluated from energy consumption, economic cost, and carbon dioxide emissions. The study offers an innovative method for landfill leachate treatment and fouling mitigation.

Remediation of Residual Antibiotics in Fermentation Residues via Packed-Bed DBD Plasma: Feasibility, Optimization, and Mechanism

Zhongyao Han,Hongchi Chen,Xinye Wang,Kun Yang,Zongyuan Wang

The safe management of antibiotic fermentation residues (AFR) is challenged by persistent bioactive antibiotics. This study employed packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to degrade pleuromutilin (PLM) via two strategies: (ⅰ) actual PLM residue achieved 94% removal in 40 min with reduced antibacterial activity; (ⅱ) γ-Al 2 O 3 model system attained 98.90% removal in 10 min at 19 kV. Radical quenching confirmed reactive oxygen species ( 1 O 2 , O 2 − ) dominated degradation. LC-MS/DFT analyses revealed plasma preferentially attacks electron-rich PLM sites, forming low-toxicity oxygenated products via hydroxylation and ring-opening oxidation. Packed-bed DBD plasma effectively reduces antimicrobial burden in hazardous AFR, offering a promising sustainable management technology.

Activation of persulfate by a water falling film DBD process for the enhancement of enrofloxacin degradation

Shilin Song,Huihui Zhang,Song Han,Sisi Xiao,Yansheng Du,Kun Hu,Huijuan Wang,Chundu Wu

A synergetic system of water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and persulfate (PS) was established and applied to enhance the enrofloxacin (EFA) degradation in this study. The simultaneous existence of electrons, reactive species, heat and UV–visible light in the DBD plasma system were utilized together to activate the PS to form SO 4 − · and other reactive oxygen species (ROS), and then worked in synergy with the DBD plasma to oxidize the EFA. The obtained results verified that there was a significant increase in the degradation percentages of EFA (20 mg L −1 ) in the DBD/PS system, and the trend was more obvious under the condition of larger discharge power input. When 0.8 mM PS was added into the DBD system with 0.8 kW discharge power, the degradation percentage of EFA could reach 99.35% after 60 min treatment, the corresponding synergetic factor (SF) was 7.94. Analysis of the O 3 and the H 2 O 2 concentrations in the DBD plasma system before and after the PS addition explained the activation of the PS by the HO·. The quenching experiments on reactive species suggested that SO4 - ·, HO·, and 1 O 2 were all important reactive species for EFA degradation. The intermediates formed by the EFA degradation were detected and the degradation pathways were speculated. Results of toxicity analysis illustrated that the toxicity of the initial EFA solution decreased after degradation in the synergetic system of DBD/PS.

CH4 and CO2 conversion over boron nitride-supported Ni catalysts with BO defects in DBD plasma

Yuanling Li,Han Yu,Jing Dai,Zhenzong Zhang,Zhichao Zhang,Hongbing Yu,Lina Liu

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) combined with catalysts supplies a potential alternative to enable the CH 4 and CO 2 conversion to work at low temperatures. In this study, different Ni/BN catalysts were synthesized using modified wetness impregnation for CH 4 and CO 2 conversion in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. Among, BN_IPA_Ni exhibited the highest catalytic performance with a CH 4 conversion of 40.5%, a CO 2 conversion of 26.6%, a H 2 yield of 9.3% and a CO yield of 10.5%. The development of B O defects, which played a significant role in the size control of Ni particles to facilitate the dissociation of CH 4 to form H*, is the key for the high catalysis activity and selectivity in this reaction. In addition, the B O defects of BN_IPA_Ni provide an efficient route to eliminate excess CH x species, which further inhibit the nucleation growth of carbon species to inert carbon.
